Trainer’s profile
Marek Doskocz graduated from Warsaw University with an MA in English and has now taught English as a foreign
language mostly to adult students for over 30 years. As a teacher he has taken special interest in examination classes
and practical phonetics. He used to work as DOS for an established language school in Warsaw and taught ELT
methodology to post-graduate students at Wyższa Szkoła im. Pawła Włodkowica for a year, only to find genuine
language classroom experience to be far more rewarding. He has also cooperated with British ELT publishers (Pearson–
Longman, OUP, CUP, MacMillan) reporting on drafts of coursebooks and freelanced as a presenter at conferences for
TEFL teachers. For well over a decade, Marek acted as an oral English language examiner at the British Council in
Warsaw before taking a new challenge of representing, in Poland, City & Guilds – a leading UK and international
awarding body – from 2006-2011. He is currently teaching adult students at elementary, intermediate and advanced
levels, which he is finding both exciting and informative to his other jobs as a trainer and City & Guilds oral exam
interlocutor.

Accuracy v Fluency.
‘It’s kinda like …whatever’
‘I like to teach communicatively’ has been the motto of many a language teacher in Poland since the early 1990’s. This
methodology places huge stress on developing fluency and it is often not until students prepare to sit a language
exam that their teachers realize they may have gone a step too far by playing down the need for greater accuracy.
The workshop aims to define the meanings of fluency and accuracy in language learning and assess their importance
at different levels of language proficiency. It will then point out how the City & Guilds exams help the teachers focus
on particular aspects of language use so that the students will benefit both in and outside of the examination room.
Ideas for useful classroom activities will be presented.
Motivation in language learning.
Have you ever heard your teachers say to you or a classmate: ‘Your grades are pretty bad this term. I realize the
subject I teach may not appeal to each student equally but nevertheless, you’re going to have to pull yours socks up
or I will refuse to promote you to the next level.’? Well, some of us certainly have.
Truly successful foreign language acquisition hinges on genuine motivation to learn. Regrettably, in many language
classrooms teachers continuously have to struggle to get their students to achieve the expected results. Some learners
will refuse to participate due to lack of interest. Others may be too self-conscious to interact in the classroom while
there will also be those who still haven’t discovered their own way to successful learning and so they keep cramming
rather than deriving pleasure from finding out about the language and its use.
The workshop will attempt to explore different strategies teachers can adopt to motivate their students to learn and
suggest activities which can help inspire students to learn more efficiently.
