Subject contents
Lectures: Reasons of deterioration of ship hull technical quality during ship"s life, examples of break-downs
(malfunctions) and their consequences. Systems of inspections and preventive as well as check-up repairs.
Organization of ship repair yard and its specific activity. Systems and technical facilities for docking ships
for repair. Processes of docking of floating units. Selected topics connected with production processes
during repair of hulls. Selected technical problems in shipbuilding: "design for production" of ship hull
structures; horizontal and vertical transport of large, 3-dimensional, heavy hull structures as well as
offshore structures; specific problems of manufacturing of ships for transportation of chemical goods, gas
(LPG, LNG, CNG) as well as offshore units (Floating Production, Storage & Offloading Units -FPSO/FSO; jackup, semi-submersible & Tension Leg Platforms - TLP); welding distortions of thin-plated structures - origin,
prevention and removal techniques; influence of manufacturing processes on strength of ship structures.
Laboratory:
1.Comparison of transport possibility using slidingn and rolling friction;
2. experimental evaluation of welding longitudinal and transverse shrinkages of butt weld;
3.Evaluation of deflectiopn of welede element: plating and stiffener; comparison theory and experiment;
4.Basics of thermal straightening of welded structures; fairing of a model;
5.Evaluation of concentration factor by elasto-optical method for selected T-joint;
6.basics of evaluation of welding residual stresses by Barkhausen method;
7. Usage of SPAWEX Program for selection welding parameters - part I (introduction and examples)
8.Usage of SPAWEX Program for selection welding parameters - part II (welding for selected 3-D block
structure);
9.System of preparation of manufacturing procedure ASTER - part I;
10.System of preparation of manufacturing procedure ASTER - part II
Project: Technical description of a ship. Selection of a shipyard and method of building of a hull. Analyses of
break-down of hull structures into units and blocks. Review of materials used for hull structures and
"design-for-production" analyses. Frame-work technology of manufacturing of a ship hull block: list of
elements, sequence of units assembly, sequence of block assembly, measurements during assembly, block
welding sequence, design of welds, final quality checking of block at the end of manufacturing process,
transportation of block for ship hull assembly. Selection of technical topic, preparation of a report and
presentation to student peer community.
Laboratory: Origin of welding distortion in thin-plated ship structures. Prevention of welding distortion.
Straightening of distorted ship hull elements.
