Date translation

Translation of dates in PhpGedView into Polish.

In PHPGedView dates are expressed with full month spelled out (e.g. 17 January 2007), in
several variations, with different date modifiers. In order to translate the dates to Polish, the
program must be aware of declension and use the correct case. The following cases are used in
Polish for in expression of dates: Nominative (Nom), Genitive (Gen), Instrumental (Inst) and
Locative (Loc) - see translation table below.
The modifiers used in GEDCOM and PGV are:
BET xxx AND yyy [between .. .and]
FROM xxx TO yyy

AFT xxx [after]
ABT xxx [about]
EST xxx [estimated]
INT xxx (text) [interpreted]
CAL xxx [calculated]
Notes:
1) The from – to pair implies a known date period (i.e. School attendance from Sep 2002 to
Jan 2007); before, after and between – and pair imply a limiting date range, within
which an event etc. occurred (it could last only one day, but the exact date is not known).
2) EST means estimated (e.g. 21 years before date of marriage)
3) CAL means calculated (e.g. from date of death and age at death)
4) INT means interpreted from the text in brackets (text contains hints/clues)
Translation rules for Polish language:
1) If day precedes month in the date (e.g. 12 September 2006), always use Genitive,
irrespectively of modifiers.
Examples:
12 September 2006 = 12 września 2006
before 12 September 2006 = przed 12 września 2006
etc.
2) If the date begins with the month (i.e. no day is specified, September 2006), use the
following case depending on modifier:
a. Nominative if no modifier is used, or following the EST, INT and CAL modifiers
Examples:
September 2006 = Wrzesień 2006
estimated September 2006 = szacowane na wrzesień 2006
interpreted September 2006 (“early fall 2006”)
= zinterpretowane na wrzesień 2006 (“wczesna jesień 2006”)
calculated September 2006 = obliczone na wrzesień 2006
b. Genitive following the ABT, FROM and TO modifiers
Examples:
About September 2006 = około września 2006
From September 2006 = od września 2006
To September 2006 = do września 2006
c. Instrumental following the BET, AND and BEF modifiers
Examples:
Between September 2006 and October 2006 =
Między wrześniem 2006 i(a) październikiem 2006
Before September 2006 = przed wrześniem 2006
d. Locative following the AFT modifier
Examples:
After September = po wrześniu 2006
3) Capitalization: the names of months are not capitalized, except at the beginning of
sentence (beginning of date)
