Our project intends to establish a European network of sound residencies to facilitate the exchange between sound artists. By means of the creative acts of hearing ourselves and hearing others the project wants to raise awareness of the Sound of Culture. Historically sound art and related experimental musics have developed differently within each of the many cultures that constitute Europe. By facilitating the transnational exchange between sound artists, we want to incite dialogue and thus help reveal the Culture of Sound. The starting point of this project will be the residencies - literally time and space away from one’s usual environment and everyday routines. Its specific aims being to stimulate the transnational mobility of sound artists, to support local communities, to build systems of long-term cooperation, and to facilitate the sharing of resources and research amongst the participating organizations. As concrete actions we plan the following: In the Artists in Residence Exchange Model each partner selects local artists to participate in a residency at the site of one of the partners, receiving residents in return. In the micro-Residency/Workshop model our concern for the next generation of sound artists is answered by the establishment of a series of 1-week micro-residencies, intended for a group of students, combining sound-art creation with training in advanced techniques. Through active involvement of local non-professional communities we aim to gain experience in audience development. The related research will help art organizations to improve their functioning and build up a wider network. Through the shared documenting interactive website and the public presentations, the artists and experimental art in general will gain visibility.
