Today marks the anniversary of the tragic death of Professor Bronisław Geremek, who died in a car crash, one year ago.
Geremek was one of the key figures in the anti-communist Solidarity movement, and a member of the Round Table Talks in
1989. He was foreign minister from 1997 to 2000 and European Parliament member since 2004.
Three months before his death, Bronisław Geremek took part in the Tischner Debate devoted to values in the international
political arena, where he said that the rule of respecting human life was of utmost significance and pointed to the superiority
of talks over conflict:
"The principle of peace is one of the defining elements of EU politics,” he said. “Another such element is the recognition of
negotiations over conflicts, which brings dialogue into politics. Such efforts generate prospects for reaching common ground,
as opposed to engaging in conflict.”
Bronisław Geremek was awarded the title of European of the Year in 2005 for his accomplishments in collaborating with other
countries and his efforts in building a modern society. In December 2005, he received the prize of the American National
Democratic Institute, a prestigious distinction awarded for promoting freedom and human rights across the world, which was
given by the head of the institute, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright:
"Bronisław Geremek is a revolutionary scholar and a scholarly revolutionary. He's also a true democrat and a wonderful
friend,” said Albright.
He died in a car accident on 13 July 2008 when driving from Warsaw back to Brussels.
---------Gazeta Wyborcza marks the one-year anniversary of Professor Bronislaw Geremek’s death. The paper mourns the loss of one
of the Third Republic’s founding fathers, lamenting the void which he has left behind. But first an anecdote: when Geremek
was a child, he wanted to become a writer. Speaking to writer Janusz Korczak, a Jewish children’s author who died in Treblinka
during the Second World War, he was told that an author must understand the world, even if it was one of criminality, evil,
and misguided justice. This was the microcosm of the Warsaw ghetto in 1943, so how to get round death, famine, and human
sorrow? Bronisław Geremek did not become a writer, although memory of the Nazi occupation did give him a feeling for
history’s tragedies, and his passion for the subject led him to become a historian.
In another article carried by Gazeta Wyborcza, it is made clear that not all of the good professor’s ideas on Europe were
popular, although everyone was respected. He was interested in politics which stimulated the imagination: “My European
ideal would be what Victor Hugo defined as a United States of Europe, a dream which became true in the form of the
Community.” Bronisław Geremek died on 13 July 2008 in a tragic car accident.

Bronisław Geremek zginął w wypadku samochodowym 13 lipca zeszłego roku. W 2002 r. został wprowadzony w nasze grono
przez swojego kolegę Horsta Fuhrmanna. Był w nim krótko, ale i tak nas wzbogacił: swoim przemówieniem w Görlitz,
rozmowami, jakie z nami prowadził, i po prostu swoją obecnością. Powierzono mi wygłoszenie pożegnania tego wielkiego
