After witnessing clashes with the urban poor and workers on one side and the government militia on
the other side that took place in France in 1832, Zygmunt Krasinski wrote this profoundly pessimistic
play about Poland's future in which he foresaw strife between the nobles and the polish working
classes.
This play enjoyed a great deal of popularity amongst right-wing poles who lived under the
Communist regime imposed on their country at the end of World War II. In today's Poland which

enjoys democratic freedoms due to the courageous struggle over 20 years by Poland's labour
unions, Kraskinski's book has fallen somewhat out of favour.
I think it still should be read for the clear way in which it expresses the view of the Polish nobility on
Poland's problems. The nobles wanted to be independent of Russia but feared the masses more
and thus at the end of the day always collaborated with Poland's occupiers.

W ogóle nie traktuję tego jako szacownej klasyki. Nie-boską odbierałam przede wszystkim
jako apokaliptyczno - katastroficzny horror. Myślę, że mogłaby zadowolić każdego
wielbiciela niesamowitości w literaturze, jeśli tylko da jej szansę. Owszem

romantycznego wielosłowia, szczególnie na początku, ale ewentualne mankamenty
wynagradza sugestywna i narastająca atmosfera mroku, zagrożenia i przeczucia
nadchodzÄ…cego upadku cywilizacji.

A portrayal of the apocalypse, which for the author are all the 19th century revolutions in Europe. He
has put an equality sign between Dante's Inferno and the camps of the revolutionaries, which he
obviously criticizes and detests. He takes the side of the religious aristocracy, which makes this
book an obvious propaganda, which is what I didn't like about it; but overall it shows an interesting
view on the changes in society and therefore it is worth reading.
