A number, a date, a milestone: e: in eshis date, sence, a starting point for Qatar. On this the World Football Championship will be held in this country. Many different countriess covet lace in this event, but this time it will take place inary the Middle East. This is also an extraordinary ns to opportunity, as another door finally opens allow different cultures and religious to meet. Qatar is building the “city of sport” in the ties suburbs of Doha, its capital. The facilities will include the largest football stadium in he the world, hotels, a new university and the Al Shaqab Center. The latter will be like nothing else in thee world, with 600 loose boxes of the latestt generation, equipped with computerizedd links to the drinking troughs, in order to monitor the daily amount of liquids given to the horses. This is not the only achievement for Qatar: other events are characterized by the desire that this country has to emerge, a nation which is constantly growing. The Qatari economy is predominantly based on tourism, but also hich are currently on factories and building companies which www.tuttoarabi.com bi TUTTO ARABI 20th QATAR INTERNATIONAL EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL 1 going through an exponential growth. All this is due to the open-mindedness, the education level of the new generations - the university is one of the largest and the best institutions, and so are generally all the schools that you come across travelling through the country – and the strong will of H.H. SHEIKH ABDULLAH BIN KHALIFA AL THANI, who invests considerably on new technologies without forgetting the traditions and respecting the elderly who have represented and still represent the country. Some of his interventions worth mentioning are the renovated Muslim Museum, a new Museum of pearl fishing and the old market, always buzzing with activity and old craftsmen who create rugs, golden jewels and antiquities of all types. It is also thanks to his love for horses that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the International Equestrian Festival, which was held at the Royal Equestrian Centre, a facility entirely devoted to every kind of horse racing. Impeccable as ever was the organization down to the tiniest detail, including the flights, the transfers from the luxury hotels where we stayed to the equestrian centre and the hospitality during the competition days. The first event to be held this year was the ECAHO-affiliated “A” show from February 20th through to 22nd, where a mild and pleasant spring climate entertained us at the VIP tables, together with the frequent passages of the caterers with various foods and delicacies. There were 78 participating horses. Judging the 11 categories were Mr. Al Nakeeb (GB), Mr. M. Trela (PL), Mr. 2 TUTTO ARABI 20th QATAR INTERNATIONAL EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL N. Marei (EGY), Mrs. A. Norden (SE), Mr. M. Ismer (DE), Mrs. A. Stojanowska (PL), Mrs. C. Chazel (FR) and Mr. F. Santoro (IT). Ring master was Mr. Sven Svenson, helped by his wife Lise. The disciplinary commission included Mrs. Barbara Pfistner and Mrs. Gisela Berger. Excellent and clear as always was the voice of Mr. Hosam Akawi, the speaker in Arab and English for the entire show. Mr. Abdul Aziz Al Boenain and Mr. Abdul Aziz Al Subiaei were responsible for organizing the show and the liberty classes, while Mr. Sami Jassim Al Boenain was in charge of the whole festival which included, in addition to the show, also the galloping races, the auction and the gala evening. Gold Medal fillies was “AJ SAWAHI”, Silver “FELICIA RLC” and Bronze “AJ WED”. Among the colts, the Gold medal went to “KHAIL AL SHAQAB”, Silver to “NAWAF AL MOHAMADIA” and Bronze to “SHAMAL AL KHALEDIAH”. Gold medal mares for “DORAR”, Silver “OM EL BERNADETTE” and Bronze “MARYLLA”. Gold champion stallions was “BANDEROS” while the reserve champion and winner of the Silver medal was “MEMPHIS”. “NIJEM IBN ETERNITY” won the Bronze. The third day was entirely devoted to the ridden class and the liberty class. In the morning, the riders got themselves ready to be judged in the two groups, divided into a first class of colts and stallions and a second class of fillies and mares. The judges were Mrs. Anne Norden and Mr. M. Trela. Six male horses competed. The winner in this category was “NUITS DU MONTEIL” ridden by Michelle Grimes. Second place for “R.S. SHAREEF” ridden by Kate Patricia. “IBN NAMA AL SHAQAB” ridden by Sian Jones was third. The winner among the female horses was “DJELFA EL FAUST” ridden by Clare Fitch, while the second place went to “WFA ATLAAL” ridden by Karolyn Rachel. “MAFAKHER” ridden by Kate Patricia was third. In the afternoon, in the glow of a warm sun, we sat down to enjoy the movement of the purebred Arabian horse. All the judges were called to score the movement of the liberty class. Also this competition was divided into 2 parts, male and female horses of different age. There were 17 female competitors. The winner was “DM ANGEL OF MERCEDES” owned by Mish’al Bin Mohammed Al Khayareen, while “UOHOOD AL SHAQAB” owned by Mr. Ahmed Saleh Bubeshait was second and “KHAEMARAH” owned by Mr. Nabeel Ali Bin Ali was third. In the male category, which had 11 competitors, the winner was “MANHATTAN” owned by Mr. Nabeel Ali Bin Ali. He was followed by “MOHEEB AL WAJBA” owned by Mr. Mubarak bin Mohammed Al Khayareen. Third place for “RS SHAREEF” owned by Dr. Hosain Abbara. There were more surprises to come. In the evening, we were all invited to the auction that is held every year at the Al Shaqab stud. 25 horses were offered for sale, including several sons of Marwan Al Shaqab, Gazal Al Shaqab and another great sire like Al Adeed Al Shaqab. Many horses were sold for a total of approximately 1,700,000 Rial. If we consider that roughly 200 horses will be born in the various Al Shaqab Studs around the world in the next twelve months, organizing an auction to increase local breeding is truly a sign of progress also in the way of running and managing a stud farm. This year, after the action and after a guided tour of the new center (an architectural gem) we were invited for dinner in the hydro pool, developed specifically for the best horses, which are looked after like real sport athletes.
