Albert Woloncewicz passed away on July 29, 2014 at
the age of 90 years. Fr. Marek Bożek presided over his
funeral Mass at St. Stanislaus on August 9th, with
interment following immediately at St. Adalbert’s
Cemetery (Cmentarz Św. Wojciecha) in Collinsville, Illinois.

On Sunday, August 10th 2014, our Annual Parishioners
Meeting took place. At this meeting a majority of the
members elected Ms. Donna Nachefski and Mr. Stanley
Kaminski to the Board of Directors.
At a Board meeting that immediately followed the election these
two new members were sworn in and, in accordance with our
By-laws, new officers were elected. Ms. Janice Merzweiler was
elected as the Chair, Mr. Roman Kaminski as the Treasurer and
Ms. Donna Nachefski as the Board’s Secretary. Fr. Marek Bożek,
as the Pastor, remains the Board’s President ex-offcio. The Board
has also unanimously requested Mr. Bill Bialczak and Mr.
Randolph Mindak to assist them as non-voting Directors Emeritus,
and both those gentlemen agreed. Please, pray for our Board and
entire Parish!
W niedzielę 10 sierpnia 2014 r. odbyło się Doroczne
Zebranie Parafian. Podczas tego zebrania większość
Parafian wybrała Donnę Nachefski i Stanley’a Novak do
Rady Dyrektorów.
Na spotkaniu bezpośrednio po wyborach zaprzysiężeni zostali jej
nowi członkowie. Zgodnie z naszym Statutem, wybrano również
Przewodniczącą Rady Dyrektorów - panią Janice Merzweiler.
Pan Roman Kaminski został Skarbnikiem, a pani Donna
Nachefski Sekretarzem Rady. Ks. Marek Bożek jest na mocy
urzędu Proboszcza Prezydentem Rady. Rada Dyrektorów
poprosiła pana Bill’a Bialczak i pana Randolph’a Mindak o
pomoc w charakterze Dyrektora Emeryta bez prawa głosu, obaj
panowie przystali na tą prośbę. Prosimy o modlitwę w intencji
Rady Dyrektorów i naszej całej Parafii.

Dear Parishioners and Friends,
Tragic events that took place last month in Ferguson, just a few miles
away from our church, reminded us that in 2014, fifty years after the
heyday of the Civil Rights movement, racial tensions in the US are very
much real and literally explosive. Racial quotas in the workplace and
academia continue to be controversial. Prominent corporations are
accused of racist practices. Certain supremacy groups promote the Bible,
God, and the white race. Race and politics interact in ways that carry
both national and international significance. In 1995 the Southern
Baptist Convention made headlines for renouncing racism, condemning
slavery, and apologizing for the church's intolerant past. That laudable
contrition raised a deeper question: Why would Christianity ever be
associated with racial oppression in the first place? How did the faith
whose founder told people to "love one another" ever become linked
with human bondage and social apartheid? As a Polish immigrant, I
continue to be shocked by the stories of segregated schools, restrooms,
drinking fountains, and beaches. I am appalled that the Ku Klux Klan used the Bible and the cross in its rituals.
Does Christianity promote racism? Is it mainly a faith for whites? Certain extremists think so. Some slavery-era
ministers wrote books justifying slavery. George D. Armstrong wrote in The Christian Doctrine of Slavery, "It may be...
that Christian slavery is God's solution of the problem relation of labor and capital about which the wisest statesmen
of Europe confess themselves at fault." Consider another book, Slavery Ordained of God. In it, Fred A. Ross wrote,
"Slavery is ordained of God, ... to continue for the good of the slave, the good of the master, the good of the whole
American family, until another and better destiny may be unfolded." Those words seem quite different from the
biblical injunction to "love your neighbor as yourself."
In first-century Palestine, the Jews and Samaritans were locked in a blood feud. Divided by geography, religion and
race, the two groups spewed venom. Each had its own turf. Jews considered the Samaritans to be racial "half-breeds."
The two groups disputed which followed the Bible better and on whose land proper worship should occur. The
Samaritans were often inhospitable to and hostile toward the Jews. Many Jewish pilgrims deliberately lengthened their
journeys to bypass Samaria. Jews publicly cursed Samaritans in their synagogues, would not allow Samaritan testimony
in Jewish courts, and generally considered Samaritans excluded from eternal life. Once a Jewish lawyer asked Jesus of
Nazareth, "Who is my neighbor?" (Luke 10:29). Jesus, who as Jew surprised people by mixing freely with Samaritans,
told him a now famous story. Robbers attacked a Jewish traveler, beating him and leaving him half-dead. Two Jewish
religious leaders ignored the injured man as they passed by. But a Samaritan felt compassion for the Jewish victim - his
cultural enemy - and bandaged his wounds, transported him to an inn, and provided for his care. Jesus' point? This
"Good Samaritan" was an example of how we should relate to those with whom we differ. The founder of the
Christian faith was no racist. He told people to get along.
Why then is Christianity often associated with racism? The short answer is that some that claim to be followers of
Jesus are not really following Him. They may have the label "Christian," but perhaps they never have accepted the
Gospel that Christ preached, the Gospel of love towards every human person, notwithstanding his or her race, age,
sexuality, or ethnicity. Fortunately, historical examples abound of people of faith opposing racism. John Newton, an
18th-century British slave trader, came to faith, renounced his old ways, became a pastor, and wrote the famous hymn
"Amazing Grace." Moreover, Newton encouraged his friend, William Wilberforce, who faced scorn and ridicule in
leading a long but successful battle in the British Parliament to abolish the slave trade.
Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy lamented that "Everybody thinks of changing humanity, but nobody thinks of changing
himself" (quoted in World Christian magazine, February 1989, p. U8). Changing our neighborhoods, cities, churches,
and other insititutions is very important. But the ultimate solution involves changing our own hearts.

Drodzy Parafianie i Przyjaciele!
Tragiczne wydarzenia zeszłego miesiąca w Ferguson, zaledwie kilka
kilometrów na północ od naszego kościoła, uświadomiły nam że w 2014
roku, pięćdziesiąt lat po przemianach społecznych lat sześćdziesiątych,
napięcia na tle rasowym w Stanach Zjednoczonych są jak najbardziej realne,
a nawet wybuchowe. Co jakiś czas dowiadujemy się o ekstremalnych grupach
religijnych, które przy pomocy Biblii udowadniają wyższość białej rasy. W
1995 roku Południowa Konwencja Baptystyczna pojawiła się na pierwszych
stron gazet, wyrzekając się w końcu swojej rasistowskiej przeszłości, wydając
oświadczenie z oficjalnymi przeprosinami za rolę tego Kościoła w
popieraniu niewolnictwa i rasowej segregacji. Ta godna pochwały deklaracja
sprawia jednak, że rodzi się inne pytanie: jak to możliwe że kościół
chrześcijański znalazł się wogóle po stronie rasizmu i rasowej segregacji? Jak
to możliwe, że religia której Założyciel kazał miłować się nawzajem, stanęła
po stronie właścicieli niewolników, po stronie apartheid’u? Jako emigrant z
kraju, który nigdy nie zaznał plagi niewolnictwa, wciąż drapię się po głowie gdy słucham opowieści o szkołach,
restauracjach, plażach, czy nawet toaletach tylko dla białych. Sam fakt istnienia Ku Klux Klanu, wykorzystywanie Biblii
i krzyża w jego spotkaniach budzi we mnie obrzydzenie i zgorszenie.
Czy chrześijaństwo promuje rasizm? Czy tak naprawdę jest religią dla białych? Niestety, są tacy, którzy tak właśnie to
rozumieją. W czasach niewolnictwa wielu duchownych pisało przemówienia i książki usprawiedliwiające tą nieludzką
instytucję. George D. Armstrong w swojej książce Chrześcijańska Doktryna Niewolnictwa pisał tak: „Całkiem możliwe... że
niewolnictwo to Boża odpowiedź na problem relacji między pracą a kapitałem, z którym to nie mogą poradzić sobie
najbardziej tęgie głowy w Europie.” W innej książce Niewolnictwo Ustanowione Przez Boga autor Fred A. Ross pisał „Bóg
ustanowił niewolnictwo, ... dla dobra niewolnika, dla dobra właściciela, dla dobra Amerykańskiej rodziny, dopóki inne,
lepsze rozwiązanie nie zostanie nam dane.” Jak bardzo różnią się takie słowa od biblijnego nauczania, by „miłować
bliźniego jak siebie samego.”
W Palestynie pierwszego wieku nazej ery Żydzi i Samarytanie byli śmiertelnymi wrogami. Te dwie grupy, podzielone
przez geografię, religię, oraz rasę, nie cierpiały się nawzajem. Dla Żydów Samarytanie byli rasą „skundloną”.
Samarytanie zaś uprzykrzali życie swoim żydowskim sąsiadom jak tylko się dało. Obie grupy interpretowały Biblię na
swoją korzyść, tam właśnie znajdując racje dla swoich argumentów. Żydowscy pielgrzymi często z premedytacją
wybierali o wiele dłuższą drogę do Jerozolimy, taką która omijałaby Samarytańskie osiedla. Żydowskie sądy nie
uznawały samarytańskiego świadectwa za ważne, a większość żydowskich teologów była przekonana, że Samarytanie
nie są w stanie osiągnąć życia wiecznego. Kiedy więc żydowski znawca prawa zapytał Jezusa „kto jest moim
bliźnim” (Łk 10:29) otrzymał zaskakującą odpowiedź. Jezus opowiedział histroię żydowskiego podróżnika, którego
okradziono i pozostawiono okaleczonego w przydrożnym rowie. Dwóch żydowskich duchownych zignorowało go,
przechodząc tuż obok. Nikt inny, lecz właśnie pogardzany Samarytanin okazał współczucie poszkodowanemu,
opatrzył jego rany, zawiózł do do gospody, i zapłacił za opiekę nad nim. Jaki morał chciał nam przekazać Jezus przez
tę opowieść? „Dobry Samarytanin” jest przykładem jak powinniśmy układać nasze relacje z tymi, od których się
różnimy, lub nawet nie zgadzamy. Założyciel religii chrześcijańskiej nie był rasistą. Uczył nas jak żyć razem z innymi.
Dlaczego więc od czasu do czasu chrześcijaństwo jest, czy było postrzegane jako religia promująca rasizm? Odpowiedź
jest prosta: nie wszyscy reklamujący się jako uczniowie Jezusa naprawdę podążają za Jego przykładem. Mimo ich
głośnej i publicznej wiary, niektórzy chrześcijanie nigdy nie zaakceptowali w pełni Dobrej Nowiny głoszonej przez
Chrystusa - Ewangelii miłości wobac każdej osoby, bez względu na jej rasę, płeć, wiek, seksualność, czy pochodzenie
etniczne. Na szczęście, historia pełna jest również przykładów ludzi, którzy pod wpływem wiary walczyli z grzechem
rasizmu. John Newton, brytyjski handlowiec niewolnikami z XVIII wieku, po przyjęciu wiary chrześcijańskiej zmienił
swoje życie - został duchownym, pracował w Brytyjskim Parlamencie nad zniesieniem niewolnictwa, i napisał słowa
słynnej pieśni „Cudowna Boża Łaska Ta” (Amazing Grace).
Rosyjski pisarz Lew Tołstoj powiedział kiedyś, że „Każdy chciałby zmienić ludzkość na lepsze, ale nikt nie chce
zmienić samego siebie”. Zmiana na lepsze naszych dzielnic, miast, kościołów, i innych instytucji jest oczywiście bardzo
ważna. Trwała przemiana na lepsze zawsze musi jednak zacząć się od naszych własnych serc i sumień.

the FALLS Golf Club at Turtle Creek in

This year’s tournament is again a “Scramble”
format. The winners’ names will be engraved on
the “crystal bowl” traveling trophy. Our tournament
will feature the “World Famous” traveling vodka cart
and “Pickle Hole” along with many other gold venues.
After many years of dedicated service to the tournament,
Chairman Greg Poniewaz, and other long-time
committee members are stepping down. The Board is
accepting resumes from individuals who would be
interested in serving on the Golf Tournament Committee.

Poland’s history is an immense tale and a testament to
the astounding resilience of the Polish people. We
are proud to offer our members and friends a
“History of Poland” Adult Education Program
every other Tuesday. After summer break we will
reconvene on September 16th and 30th at 6:00 p.m.
One of our parishioners, Mr. Stan Piekarski, M.A.
teaches the class, based on Adam Zamoyski’s book
under the same title (“History of Poland”).
Participation in previous classes is not required join us and learn about rich Polish history!

September 26 & 28: “Corpus Christi” Play and Panel
Famous Corpus Christi play by Terrance MacNally will be
performed in St. Louis only twice: on September 26th
(Friday) at 7:00 p.m. and September 28th (Sunday) at
8:00 p.m. Both performances will take place at Moore
Auditorium on Webster’s University campus. Following
Sunday’s performance, a Townhall Diversity Dialogue
will take place, with Fr. Marek as one of the panelists. All
Parishioners interested in promoting acceptance and
diversity in religious context are encouraged to attend.

Terrence McNally's play Corpus Christi has been
captivating audiences and drawing detractors ever since
its debut, 14 years ago. By resetting the familiar tale of
the life of Jesus in the town of his youth, Corpus
Christi, Texas, McNally created a work which
meditates on the life, love, and passion of Christ,
but in a modern and relatable way. It is worth
seeing at least once!

wystawiona w St. Louis 26 września o 7 wieczorem oraz
28 września o 8 wieczorem. Oba przedstawienia będą

"Corpus Christi" Terrence'a McNally od 14 już lat
wywołuje dużo emocji wśród widzów oraz krytyków
teatralnych i religijnych. Autor umieścił
opowieść o Jezusie w swoim rodzinnym
miasteczku "Corpus Christi" w Texasie w latach
pięćdziesiątych ubiegłego wieku. Tę sztukę
warto zobaczyć choć raz!

special outdoor Mass on Saturday, October 4th at 4:00

people make it through tough times with
their best friends by their side. All our
donations will be delivered to Bi-State Pet
Food Pantry serving 150 families and over
500 pets in need every month. A donation box will be
located in back of the church during September with

again The Bach Society of Saint Louis with another
spectacular choral concert, “Voices of the Baltic Coast.”
After decades of suppression under communist rule,
composers of the Baltic States returned to writing sacred
music following their liberation in 1991. Experience this
rarely-heard and enchanting a cappella music of Latvia,
Estonia and Lithuania in the beautiful setting of our

26 października: Halloween na parkingu
On the last Sunday before the Eve of All
Hallows we invite all our young friends, ages
17 and younger, to join us for a joyful “Trunk
or Treat” celebration from 10:15 a.m. until
10:45 a.m. (between the Masses). Please dress in
church appropriate customs to make sure that you
will not get locked in church’s scary dungeon with all the
vampires, demons, and such! Our adult members and
friends are encouraged to come with trunks full of
goodies and treat our youngsters with sweet generosity!

November 13: Fr. Tony Flannery at St. Stan’s
13 listopada: Spotkanie z Ks. Tony Flannery
On November 13th (Thursday) at 7:00 p.m. we will have
the honor of hosting in our church Fr. Tony Flannery.
Catholic Action Network has invited this famous Roman
Catholic priest from Ireland to speak about his struggle
for reform in the Church, as described in his most recent
book “A Question of Conscience.”
Fr. Flannery is a popular preacher and writer who in
2009 organized the Association of Catholic Priests to
articulate the views of rank-and-file members of the
clergy. Last year he was investigated and silenced by the
Vatican’s Congregation of Doctrine of Faith for leading
Church reform efforts in Ireland.
W czwartek, 13 listopada o godz. 7 wieczorem będziemy
mieli zaszczyt powitać w naszym kościele Ks. Tonny
Flannery. Organizacja Catholic Action Network
zaprosiła tego słynnego księdza rzymsko-katolickiego z
Iralndii, by podzielił się z mieszkańcami St. Louis
historią jego zmagań o reformę Kościoła.
Ks. Flannery jest popularnym kaznodzieją i pisarzem,
który w 2009 r. założył Stowarzyszenie Księży
Katolickich w celu lepszego artykułowania poglądów i
potrzeb duchowieństwa w Irlandii. W poprzednim roku
Watykańska Kongregacja Nauki Wiary zakazała mu
publicznego wypowiadania się w odpowiedzi na jego
krytykę praktyk hierarchii i Watykanu.
November 15 & 16: Ordination and First Mass
With praise and thanksgiving to Almighty God we
joyfully invite all our parishioners and friends for the
Presbyteral Ordination of Deacon Tomasz Pels. This
happy and solemn ceremony of ordaining Tomasz to the
Sacred Order of the Priesthood in Christ's one, holy,
catholic, and apostolic Church will take place on
Saturday, November 15th at 4:00 p.m. Mass.
The following day, on Sunday November 16th,
Father Pels will celebrate his First Mass of
Thanksgiving at 9:00 a.m. Reception in the
Polish Heritage Center will follow. Let us express
our support of Deacon Tomasz’s ministry by our
presence and continued prayers.

Oddając chwałę Bogu za dar powołania do
sakramentalnego kapłaństwa, zapraszamy wszystkich
parafian i przyjaciół na Święcenia Prezbiteratu Tomasza
Pelsa. Ta radosna uroczystość odbędzie się w sobotę 15
listopada o godzinie 4:00 po południu w naszym
kościele. Dzień później, w niedzielę 16 listopada,
Ks. Pels odprawi swoją Mszę Prymicyjną o godzinie
9:00 rano. Po Mszy zapraszamy wszystkich na
przyjęcie w Domu Dziedzictwa Polskiego. Niech
nasze modlitwy i obecność w tych dniach będą znakiem
wsparcia dla Tomka i jego kapłańskiego powołania. W tą
niedzielę nie będzie Mszy Świętej o godzinie 11:00.

POLISH HISTORY: SOVIET INVASION OF 9/17/1939
Though the pre-history of the Polish-Soviet war of
September 1939 stretches back to the early 1920s, when
the first Soviet-Polish war had ended in Polish conquest
of large tracts of territory inhabited by Ukrainians and
Belarusians, the actual foundation for the war did not
come about until only a few weeks before it actually
broke out. In August of 1939, Nazi Germany and the
Soviet Union signed a non-aggression treaty. One week
later, Germany invaded Poland and World War II began.
The first attack of the war took place on September 1,
1939, as German aircraft bombarded the Polish town of
Wielun, killing nearly 1,200. Five minutes later, the
German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on a
transit depot at Westerplatte in the Free City of Danzig
(today’s Gdańsk). Poland expected this Nazi invasion
and had made preparations for it. This was a plan of
holding, falling back,
protecting sources of supply,
strengthening the line of
defense and counter attack.
This persisted for more than
a week, as German troops
puzzlingly failed to penetrate
past the Vistula and Bug
river s. Pol ish troops
retreated to this area and
south to the "Romanian
Bridgehead", from which it
could expect supplies from
its allies to continue the
eastern front against
Germany.
However, on September 17th, early in the morning, the
Soviet Union invaded Poland from the East. This
invasion was a direct result of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact,
signed between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union on
August 23, 1939. A secret protocol of that pact (the
details of which would not become public until 1990) cut
the European continent into two spheres of influence,
split between two totalitarian systems – that of Nazi
Germany and that of Soviet Union. The Soviet
government used the German invasion of Poland as a
pretext to violate the non-aggression treaty it had with
Poland, announced the Polish state as non-existent and
claimed that it entered Polish territory to defend
Ukrainian and Belarusian people “who were trapped in
territory that had been illegally annexed by Poland.”
Now Poland was squeezed from the East and West trapped between two totalitarian behemoths.
Because of the ongoing defense war with Germany, the
eastern border of Poland was poorly armed and only
small contingents defended the border with USSR (total
length of 800 miles). The Soviet army vastly
outnumbered Polish troops. Facing that situation,
commander of the Polish army, Edward Rydz-Śmigły
ordered his army to fall back and limit their activity
against the Soviets to self-defense. Despite this order
some clashes took place when the Red Army entered
Poland, especially in bigger cities like Grodno (in today’s
Belarus).
At the end of September 1939 the division of Poland
was confirmed by the German–Soviet Treaty of Friendship,
Cooperation and Demarcation which included a correction
of the borders first drawn in the secret clause of the
Ribbentop-Molotov Pact. It
was the beginning of a 2year long occupation of
Central Europe by two
totalitarian regimes. As a
result of the Soviet invasion,
called “the fourth partition
of Poland”, the Polish
government emigrated to
Romania. Polish citizens in
Soviet occupied territories
were brutally repressed, the
Eastern borderlands were
gradually de-polonized and
the Polish population of the
USSR-annexed Polish lands
was being Sovietized.
Hundreds of thousands of
Polish citizens were deported to Siberia and other
remote parts of the Soviet Union, many of whom never
to return from the 'inhuman land'. Stalin also wanted to
decapitate Poland of its intelligentsia: over 20 thousand
Polish military officers, professors, doctors, lawyers, and
clergy were killed by the Soviet secret police, the
NKVD, in the forests of Katyń, Kharkiv, Mednoye,
Bykovnia and Ostashkov.
Towards the end of the War, due to decisions taken by
victorious powers in Teheran and Yalta, Poland was
taken over for decades by the Soviet communist regime.
It was not until June 1989 that a free and democratic
Poland was reborn after a bloodless revolution that
marked the end of communism in Poland. Poland's
quest for independence also paved the way to selfdetermination for the other European nations behind
the Iron Curtain who followed suit.
SAINT OF THE MONTH
ŚWIĘTA MIESIĄCA
Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the tiny woman recognized
throughout the world for her work among the poorest of
the poor, was beatified October 19, 2003. Among those
present were hundreds of Missionaries of Charity, the
Order she founded in 1950. Born to Albanian parents in
what is now Skopje, Macedonia (then part of the
Ottoman Empire), Gonxha (Agnes) Bojaxhiu was the
youngest of the three children who survived. For a time,
the family lived comfortably, and her father's
construction business thrived. But life changed overnight
following his unexpected death. During her years in
public school Agnes participated in a Catholic sodality
and showed a strong interest in the foreign missions. At
age 18 she entered the Loretto Sisters of Dublin. It was
1928 when she said goodbye to her mother for the final
time and made her way to a new land and a new life. The
following year she was sent to the Loreto novitiate in
Darjeeling, India. There she chose the name Teresa and
prepared for a life of service. Later she was assigned to a
high school for girls in Calcutta, where she taught history
and geography to the daughters of the
wealthy. But she could not escape the
realities around her—the poverty, the
suffering, the overwhelming numbers of
destitute people. In 1946, while riding a
train to Darjeeling to make a retreat,
Sister Teresa heard what she later
explained as “a call within a call.” The
message was clear. I was to leave the
convent and help the poor while living
among them.” She also heard a call to
give up her life with the Sisters of
Loretto and, instead, to “follow Christ
into the slums to serve him among the
poorest of the poor.”
After receiving permission to leave Loretto, establish a
new religious community and undertake her new work,
she took a nursing course for several months. She
returned to Calcutta, where she lived in the slums and
opened a school for poor children. Dressed in a white
sari and sandals (the ordinary dress of an Indian woman)
she soon began getting to know her neighbors—
especially the poor and sick—and getting to know their
needs through visits. For the next four decades Mother
Teresa worked tirelessly on behalf of the poor. Her love
knew no bounds. Nor did her energy, as she crisscrossed
the globe pleading for support and inviting others to see
the face of Jesus in the poorest of the poor. In 1979 she
was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. On September 5,
1997, God called her home and this date is her feast day.

świecie jako zakonnica pracująca z najuboższymi z
ubogich, została beatyfikowana 19 października 2003
roku. Wśród rzeszy pielgrzymów obecnych na tej
uroczystości były setki Misjonarek Miłosierdzia, zakonu
przez nią założonego w 1950 r. Urodzona w Albańskiej
rodzinie w miejscowości Skoje (dzisiejsza Macedonia,
wówczas część Imperium Otomańskiego) nosiła imię
Gonxha (Agnieszka) Bojazhiu i była najmłodszym z
trojga rodzeństwa. Jej życie było spokojne i dostatnie do
czasu śmierci ojca. W trakcie uczęszczania do szkoły
państwowej Agnieszka należała do sodalicji katolickiej i
bardzo pragnęła wyjechać na misje. W wieku 18 lat
wstąpiła do zgromadzenia irlandzkiego Sióstr
Loretańskich. W 1928 roku pożegnała się ostatecznie z
rodziną i wyjechała do nowicjatu w Darjeeling w
Indiach. Tam właśnie Agnieszka przybrała imię Tersa w
trakcie przygotowywania się do zakonnego życia. Później
przypisano ją do nauczania historii i geografii w szkole
średniej dla dziewcząt z bogatych indyjskich rodzin w
Kalkucie. Teresa nie potrafiła jednak
odgrodzić się od otaczającej jej zewsząd
brutalnej rzeczywistości – skrajnego
ubóstwa i cierpienia ogromnych rzeszy
biedaków. W 1946 roku, podczas jazdy
pociągiem na rekolekcje, siostra Teresa
przeżyła moment, który później nazwała
“powołaniem w powołaniu”. Przesłanie
było bardzo wyraźne – poczuła się ona
wezwana by opuścić swoje zgromadzenie
i “podążyć za Chrystusem do slamsów,
by
tam

najbiedniejszych z biednych.”
Po uzyskaniu pozwolenia na opuszczenie
Sióstr Loretańskich, Teresa założyla
nową wspólnotę i ukończyła kurs pielęgniarski.
Powróciła do Kalkuty, gdzie odtąd żyła w slamsach i tam
otworzyła szkołę dla najuboższych dzieci ulicy. Ubrana
w białe sari i sandały (czyli najprostszy strój typowej
kobiety w Indiach) bardzo szybko nawiązała przyjaźnie
ze swoimi ubogimi i umierającymi sąsiadami. Przez
następne czterdzieści lat Matka Teresa oddała się
całkowicie pracy na rzecz najbiedniejszych i najbardziej
potrzebujących. Jej miłość nie znała żadnych granic ani
nie stawiała żadnych warunków. Nie ustawała też w
podróżowaniu dookoła globu, wzywając wszystkich do
rozpoznania twarzy Chrystusa w ubogich. W 1979 roku
otrzymała Pokojową Nagrodę Nobla. 5 września 1997
roku odeszła do domu Pana i tego dnia obchodzi się jej
wspomnienie liturgiczne.

House” shelter, just a few blocks away from our church.
