Second Homily
Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas,
They are looking for a few good men! Well, actually, they would accept a lot of good men.
Our Holy Ghost Council Knights of Columbus are hosting a special evening of information
about their organization. I hope that you would think about attending to find out about who
they are and what they do! The K of C ‘s live out the sprit of stewardship! They do many
fundraising events and all of their monies at the end of the year are given away—donated to all the causes in
our local communities. They truly live out Christ’s example to care for the poor, the needy, the helpless, the
parishes. I hope to see you “guys” at St. Theresa’s Parish this Monday evening.
Our appreciation and gratitude continues as it knows no bounds like your generosity. Our Parish Family
thanks you for your fantastic response to our “To Teach Who Christ Is” Campaign. Pledges are still coming
in—would you believe? So if you are still thinking about it, or have any questions about it, you can call me!
Pledge cards are still at the doors of the Church for your convenience. Thank you again to all who have
pledged.
If you have any questions regarding processing, payments or you need to change the status of your gift in
any way (address change, payment method, schedule, etc.) please call the Archdiocesan Campaign Office at
312-534-8500. The mailing address for payments to be sent to is: TTWCI, PO Box 7256, Kensington, CT
06037-7256. Please ensure that all payments have your DONOR ID that is listed on your pledge reminders,
and that checks are made payable to “To Teach Who Christ Is.” Thank you for your generosity!
We are grateful to Paul Wood, our interim Music Director, for stepping up to seamlessly guide our Liturgical
music while Marcy Weckler Barr is on sick leave. His talent and commitment is self-evident. It is with sadness, then, that we announce that Paul has accepted a position as Music Director at a Protestant Church—
which has been his life-long dream—effective February 1st. He may still be involved here depending upon
his availability and our needs. We are looking for another talented person who can serve as our interim
Music Director to direct the choir and coordinate our liturgical music program as well as others who can competently play our electronic keyboard. So, if you are musically inclined and want our excellent Music Ministry
to continue, we ask you to step forward and call me as soon as possible for all the “notes” and details.
At all of today’s Masses, you heard the Cardinal’s letter about the “Renew My Church” initiative as our
Archdiocese plans for the future of our Parishes. All parishes are in a “group” in order to facilitate this
planning process. Our “grouping” is St. Theresa, St. Collette, Mission San Jan Diego and of course, us.
As promised last weekend, we have our final Christmas collection total. Because of your magnanimity and
your resulting generous thoughtfulness, our Christmas Collection was $105,535.00 Our budgeted amount
was $134,000.00. We thank you for your goodness and commitment to St. Thomas of Villanova Parish.
Coming soon to your local parish: Lion King, Jr.—Catholic Schools Week—St. Pat / St. Joe’s Night!
Your Pastor,
Rev. Thomas R. Rzepiela

GIFT (Growing In Faith Together)
Ministry is looking for individuals with
developmental disabili es to join our
Wednesday group. You are a very
important part of our Parish Community,
and we welcome you with open arms.
Our ministry encourages and helps
persons with disabili es to become
ac ve par cipants in the Catholic
Church. All Catholics are equal in dignity
in the sight of God. Every human being is
created in the likeness and image of God.
Our mission is to grow in Faith together
with those who have disabili es. The
GIFT ministry at St. Thomas of Villanova
serves adults 18 and older.
GIFT is a program of religious educa on
specifically designed to meet the
spiritual needs of persons with
developmental disabili es. GIFT invites
volunteers to prepare a special place
where they can welcome persons with
developmental disabili es. Through the
experience in one-to-one rela onships,
our friends with special needs discover
a place where they belong and can
enjoy meaningful rela onships which
help them realize their own gi edness
and dignity. Through par cipa on in
our GIFT community of faith, our
friends are be er able to celebrate
sacraments and enter into worshipping
experiences of the whole Church.

Years ago when I was
cleaning out the garage
at my folks place back in
Streator, IL a er my mom
died and my dad had
come here to live with
my family and me, I
threw away several
boxes of paperwork I
found up in the a c
space. None of it had been touched
for years. I know this because I used
to play up there a lot when I was a
kid, and those boxes were there even
then. I never thought much about the
disposal un l I had lunch a while later
with Dad and some of the rela ves
back home. It came up in a
conversa on that I was doing a lot of
clean-up work in the garage. When I
told everyone about the boxes I’d
pitched, one of my aunts became
troubled. Seems she had old le ers-love le ers, even, if I’m recalling this
correctly--in some of the boxes. I
apologized, but troubled in return, I
asked her when she had planned to
go through the boxes herself. Another
aunt answered first: “About forty
years ago…”
This was--and s ll is--funny to me, but
if I’m being honest, it’s also bi ng
because I know I’ve emulated my
aunt’s procras na on countless mes
before--and a er--she spoke those
insigh ul words. One such example is
fresh in my head because my
(decades) lack of meliness was just
pointed out to me a couple of nights
ago. I’d go en together with old work
friends for dinner, and one of the
a endees was a woman I hadn’t seen
in twenty years. Oddly, a few nights
before we all connected, I came upon
a photograph I’d taken of her in the
lab where were both worked some10
me pre-1995. I showed
it to her at the restaurant and she laughed
when I said that none of
us have changed. She
asked where I’d even
found it. I told her it was
in a dresser drawer in
my bedroom. She
laughed again and said I
needed to clean out the drawer more
o en. I didn’t tell her that my 2017
resolu on is spend at least ten
minutes a day de-clu ering my home,
and that this resolu on actually
brought me to the picture.
So far so good on the resolu on by
the way, but the sooner in the day I
get to de-clu ering, the more
engaged I am in the process. In an
infinitely larger context, today’s
Gospel speaks to me of this same
no on of ac ng on things sooner than
later. When Jesus encounters fishermen Simon Peter and his brother
Andrew by the Sea of Galilee, he tells
them to come join him, and we learn
that “At once they le their nets and
followed him.” Jesus walks further
and encounters James and his brother
John in a boat with their father Zebedee, all mending their nets. He calls to
these brothers, too, and “immediately
they le their boat and their father
and followed him.” As disciples in our
own right, Jesus calls us to the work
of the Kingdom as well, and when it
comes to pu ng on Christ--yes, even
more so than cleaning out a dresser
drawer--now beats later. Per the 17th
century English churchman Thomas
Fuller, “What may be done at any
Time will be done at no Time.” Or put
more simply per something I read
once, “One of these days is none of
these days.” Waste no me.

IN SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY
Lord, bless the men and women of our military as they answer the call to serve our na on and
defend our freedom. Protect and heal them-- body, soul, mind and spirit--especially those in
harm's way. Most of all let them know your love; that you are with them, and that you will
never forsake or abandon them. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

III Niedziela Zwykła – Posłany do grzeszników
ukazujący Jezusa przychodzącego do człowieka pogrążonego w ciemności.
Niestety my sami zbyt
Powstanie Styczniowe –
heroiczny zryw Polaków
Lata poprzedzające wybuch powstania styczniowego to okres
narastającego terroru carskiego zaborcy, czas masowego sprzeciwu ludności i manifestacji o charakterze patriotycznoreligijnym. Podczas jednej z nich, 27 lutego 1861 r.
Zamkowym w Warszawie, w wyniku czego
zginęło sto osób, spowodowały radykalizowanie się nastrojów,
rozwój konspiracji, a także ogłoszenie żałoby narodowej. W
wielu miastach, m.in. w Wilnie, i Kielcach, odbyły się marsze
poparcia i solidarności z mieszkańcami stolicy. Noszono też tzw. biżuterię patriotyczną z symbolami zniewolonego narodu: koroną cierniową, kotwicą, sercem, kajdanami z łańcuchem lub
herbem z polskim Orłem, litewską Pogonią i ukraińskim Michałem Archaniołem. Władze carskie
szykanami i wysokimi grzywnami zmuszały do zdjęcia oznak żałoby. Równocześnie kształtowały
się konspiracyjne obozy polityczne. Przedstawiciele ‘czerwonych’ dążyli do walki i ogłoszenia
powstania. Z kolei ‘biali’ byli przeciwni wybuchowi powstania i skłonni pójść na ugodę z władzą
w zamian za ograniczone reformy.
Kolejne posunięcia władzy rosyjskiej: ogłoszenie stanu wojennego, profanacja świątyń
katolickich i w konsekwencji zamknięcie wielu kościołów, masowe aresztowania i zesłania,
doprowadziły do wzrostu napięcia. Niespodziewany pobór do wojska młodych mężczyzn podejrzanych o konspirację spowodował wybuch powstania w nocy z 22 na 23 stycznia 1863 r.
W Warszawie działał w podziemiu Tymczasowy Rząd Narodowy. Jego pierwsze decyzje
dotyczyły uwłaszczenia chłopów, którym obiecano ziemię za udział w powstaniu. Władza została
podzielona na wojskową i cywilną. Niezwykle sprawnie jak na warunki konspiracyjne działała
łączność z prowincją, aprowizacja, ściąganie podatku narodowego. Tajne państwo polskie było
ewenementem na skalę europejską. Funkcjonowało do czasu, gdy carska policja za pomocą
masowych aresztowań i tortur rozbiła jego struktury.
Na terenie Królestwa Polskiego stacjonowała około 100-tysięczna armia rosyjska. Przeciwstawiono jej nieprzeszkolone i słabo uzbrojone polskie oddziały. Jedyną możliwą formą walki
była więc wojna partyzancka. Początkowo unikano starć w otwartym polu. Kiedy dotarła broń
zakupiona za granicą, a ochotników przeszkolono w leśnych obozach, doszło do wielu bitew o
sporym znaczeniu wojskowym, psychologicznym i propagandowym (m.in. pod Okszą, Słupią,
Węgrowem i Żyrzynem). Największe natężenie walk miało miejsce latem 1863 r. W sumie podczas prawie dwóch lat powstania stoczono około 1200 bitew i potyczek, a w oddziałach
powstańczych służyło około 200 tys. osób.
Powstanie objęło swym zasięgiem ziemie zaboru rosyjskiego. Liczono na szersze
poparcie państw europejskich, jednak ograniczyły się one do złożenia not protestacyjnych.
członków Rządu Narodowego: Romualda Traugu a, Romana Żulińskiego, Józefa Toczyskiego,
Rafała Krajewskiego, Jana Jeziorańskiego. Podczas walk poległo około 30 tys. powstańców, blisko 38 tys. znalazło się na Syberii, wielu wyemigrowało. Powstanie styczniowe było ostatnim
zbrojnym zrywem narodu polskiego walczącego o Ojczyznę, przed odzyskaniem niepodległości
w 1918 roku…
