Europe on the contemporary Macedonian dramatic stage As part of the topic I decided to speak about the dramatic opus of Goran Stefanovski, mostly for three chief reasons which are elaborated in the paper: 1. The thematic constant of his dramatic worldview is to represent Macedonia (namely, the Balkans and its Slavic population) against the ‘big, white western world’ of Europe and the US. This East-West imagological conditionality and juxtaposition of meanings inside Stefanovski’s dramatic worlds provides the basis for the dramatic conflicts in his plays, including those written during the socialist period of his upbringing (Wild Flesh, Tattooed Souls), when Stefanovski resides in Skopje (Macedonia), and writes in Macedonian, and those written after the break-up of the SFRY (Casabalkan, Euroalien, Hotel Europa), when Stefanovski lives and works in Canterbury (England), and writes in English. 2. The imagological thematic constant which runs through the European East vs. West in Stefanovski’s opus is something his writing shares with the thematic preoccupations of other contemporary Macedonian dramatists (such as Jordan Plevnesh, Venko Andonovski, Dejan Dukovski). With that, the plays of Andonovski and Dukovski evidently reference scenes from Stefanovski’s works. Along those lines, it’s safe to say that Stefanovski is the paradigmatic (emblematic) Macedonian playwrighter. 3. The play-script for Stefanovski’s theatre productions written during the past decade and a half, as integral parts of international theatre projects and productions, have received a wider international acclaim and visibility by the European theatre audiences. His dramatic works allow for the voice(s) of the other, the silenced Europe, to resonate at the center of the European cultural capitals. With that, the interculturality of these theatre projects (performed at all levels of the production), allows for the articulation of the mutual demonization that generates the imagological, ideological and geopolitical difference which exists between Europe and the Balkans. Key words: Macedonian drama, Goran Stefanovski, East–West Europa na scenie współczesnego dramatu macedońskiego W artykule autorka poddała analizie dorobek dramaturgiczny Gorana Stefanovskiego, rozpatrując opus tego twórcy w perspektywie trzech zagadnień: Slavia Meridionalis 12 - Summaries 1. Europe looked with the eyes of the Macedonian writer. Macedonian writer looked at the eyes of Europe In this text the emphasis is put on the topic of the individual and transtemporal identity phenomen of Macedonian writer in European point of view and also of European imagology picture in the eyes of Macedonian writer. In that case, the paper explores the specific forms of irony and humour in the postmodern novel “Hidden camera” by Macedonian writer Lidija Dimkovska, originally published in Macedonia in 2004, and later translated into several languages. This novel deals with the creative image, fictional and imagological conceptions of Macedonian view on European space today and also the European view on Macedonian modern realities. (This novel was translated in year 2007, for example, into Slovak language and in 2010 into Polish). Lidija Dimkovska witness that personal histories in a specific geo‑political (European) space makes an individuals history itself when our personal histories touch, cope with each to other, are crucified on their paths, and go parallel to each other to exchange their content, edges, myths and realities. The eternal questions about identity, love, death, freedom etc. always wait for personal answers, and here is the home for Dimkovska’s writing. Of course, the answers can be very different and filled with even contradictory feelings, but what is important for this writer in writing, is that her whole being writes, with all its possible strength. In proportion with the Slovak hole reception of “Hidden camera”, the contribution points out the need for synthetic reconstruction of the whole scientific research of irony forms and aplications of them in this novel, and also the rehabilitation of metodological problems of common sense. Differentiation was present in Europe in various ways, either by the use of geographical terms, which became the indicators of difference, or how the politicians wanted to see it – split into Western Europe, Eastern Europe or Central and Eastern Europe. They represent the heterogeneity and diverse influences of civilization, that are reflected in its culture. The division into different cultural spaces is mirrored in the literature. Here, from a broad selection of south Slavic literature, for the basis of analysis two works of contemporary Macedonian writer Ermis Lafazanovski were selected: novel Hrapeshko and short story Exotic cantata. They reveal the existence of cultural differences and traditions, represented in the antinomies friend–foe, top–down which show spatial differences in Europe burdened by her stereotypes. As such, the ‘Austro-Hungarian theme’ is a particular mnemonic phenomenon – a theme of a specific historical trauma, as well as a theme of a radical and comprehensive cultural transition or a theme of a complex and dramatic cultural transcoding, crucially important in the construction of identity and alterity policies of modern Bosniak and Bosnian‑Herzegovinian literature and culture as a whole. It is not surprising, then, that in the scope of the ‘Austro-Hungarian theme’ – along with other literary pieces – there appears the first Bosniak novel, Zeleno busenje [‘The Green Sods’] (1898) by Edhem Mulabdić (1862–1954), after whom the theme will later be addressed, especially in Bosniak literature, by a whole range of different authors, representing in various ways the late-19th century traumatic Bosnia’s encounter with Europe. W czasach postosmańskich wykorzystywano go szeroko, a nawet „obsesyjnie”, uważając „okupację austro-węgierską” za przyczynę rozwarstwiania narodowego i społecznego środowisk muzułmańskich. This is connected with the complicated ethnic and religious relations, difficult economic condition of the state and complex, international circumstances in the Balkans. The European Union makes the membership of Macedonia in its structures dependent on the implementation of solutions preventing the renewal of the armed conflict between the Macedonian authorities and Albanian rebels in the year 2001. The reforms implemented on the basis of the Ohrid Framework Agreement (2001) are designed to provide the social and economic stability in the country, mainly through the cooperation between Macedonians and Albanians. The imbalance between the strengthening of the position of the Albanian national minority in the entirety of the state system and the progress in the establishment of the civil society raises the concern of the observers of the social and political life in Macedonia. The division of the society based on the ethnicity criterion is strengthened in Macedonia. The opportunity of the development of cooperation over the ethnic divisions is limited due to a strong role of nationalistic sentiments, insufficient legitimacy of framework agreement by the citizens and pathologies of social and political life (corruption, organized crime). It is likely that ethnic criteria that are the basis for currently implemented system changes in the Republic of Macedonia shall dominate the pursuit to democratize the state as a whole. It will be a threat for the consolidation of the republic, since the particularistic tendencies may outweigh the peaceful cooperation for strengthening the unity of the state. We focus on their attitude, opinions and interpretations of the political events, as well as the reactions to the decisions of the great powers – as an expression of the Macedonian view to the Balkan Wars and the projections about Macedonia. In this context it is interesting to see whether they concern the national question and how they articulate the opinions on reception of the results of the Balkan Wars. The attention of the Macedonians was pointed almost exclusively to the national problem and the Balkan Wars, even after the beginning of the World War I. They were engaged in finding a solution for the Macedonian national question and the realization of the idea for national state. At the same time they were displaying in the Russian public their understanding of the political events and their attitude: warning about the possible partition, demanding a support for foundation of a Macedonian state and protesting against the partition. But, besides the organized intellectuals in emigration, the Macedonian national question remained at the margins of the interests of the great powers of Europe or has been used as a tool for solving other political questions. The appeals of the Macedonian intellectuals were not enough influential and Macedonia entered in World War I with all the consequences: the confirmation of the borders from the separation and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. This very difficult and complicated period lasted up to the foundation of the national state in World War II at the territory of today’s Republic of Macedonia. Środowiska emigrantów prezentowały przed rosyjską opinią publiczną swoje rozumienie zachodzących wydarzeń politycznych, by zapobiec podziałowi terytorium, a jednocześnie poszukiwać wsparcia dla koncepcji utworzenia państwa macedońskiego. The first negative reactions and denials came from the Southern Neighbor, whose denial was directed towards the name, i.e. the identity, while the others referred to the language, identity and even a part of the territory. The most vociferous and at the same time the most successful was the reaction of the Southern Neighbour, who gained support of the European ‘democrats’, which de facto turned them into accomplices in the open blackmail that demanded the Republic of Macedonia to change its constitutional name. Namely, the 1992 Lisbon Declaration of the E(uropean) C(ouncil) imposed a demand to the Republic of Macedonia to accept any name that would not contain the word “Macedonia” in order to be recognized by the EU!?! The newly independent state was finally admitted to the UN under a reference “the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” through violation of the provisions of the UN Charter. Twenty years later the country is still enforced to use the offensive reference, and often even to tolerate the FYROM acronym. This article deals precisely with the politics of pressures and blackmail exercised by NATO and EU with regard to the so‑called name dispute. It also centers on national myths that are used in order to “justify” such politics and on the attitude of the European ‘democrats’ towards those national myths. In contrast to the democratic rules preached by NATO and EU across the world, the Republic of Macedonia was and still is blackmailed by an unprincipled demand to select a NEW name in order to please one member-state. As a consequence of that demand, the national myth linked with ancient Macedonians (so-called antiquisation, although the better term is antique-mania) has been revived and upgraded. A number of pseudohistorians with various professional backgrounds, such as journalists, politicians, writers, physicians, and even university professors, has involved in this endeavor. To make things worse, even some historians and archaeologists may be seen in this group, with a mission to defend the right to the name and identity. The societal climate has been politicized to such a degree that not only the neighbours, but even EU has been caught in the vicious circle of competing and mutually exclusive national myths. The Union obviously insists on the philhellenic myth i.e. on the alleged Hellenic roots of the European culture as such. Z pierwszym wystąpił południowy sąsiad negując jej nazwę, pozostali sąsiedzi podważali natomiast jej język, tożsamość i prawo do części terytorium. Various forms of such affiliations existed in the past. They represent older types of collective relationships, such as tribes, the Greek poleis, medieval kingdoms and the like. All of them exhibit the fundamental features of the “structure” of identity. Nowadays, Croatia being at the doorstep of the European Union, the issue of national identity becomes a matter of its internal structure that resists integration, yet seeking to become a part of the “European identity structure”. Croatia’s scepticism towards the EU stems from the questions of whether the European identity exists and which possibilities for preserving all the structural elements of Croatian national identity, including language as the main aspect, exist within the European Union. The territory, language and customs acquire defensive features that are becoming increasingly disintegrating and decreasingly integrating in the multi-ethnic Europe. The perception of Europe in Bulgaria depends mostly on the almost five‑century‑long Ottoman rule of Bulgarian lands which detached Bulgaria from the European civilization. Therefore, for the Bulgarians Europe represents the foreign, more developed part of the world, towards which they strive. Bulgaria only begins to reestablish its place in Europe with the restoration of the Bulgarian state following its Liberation (1878), achieved thanks to the Russian‑Turkish war of 1877–1878. The new Bulgarian state is based on a European template, but in the first decades following its independence, it faces European contradictions. The idea of Europe as a unitary whole is put in doubt as Bulgaria is the battleground where the interests of the Russian liberator and the Western European countries collide. The participation of Bulgaria in the two world wars on the side of the Central Powers and the Tripartite Pact leads to defeats and further detachment from Western Europe. Following World War II, Bulgaria falls into the Soviet sphere of influence, and Europe (understood as Western Europe) is associated with the image of the enemy for nearly half a century. This only changes with the end of the Cold War, when the conception of Europe is equated with the desired membership in the European Union, achieved on 1 January 2007. Key words: Europe, Bulgarian national revival, Ottoman domination, the Soviet “sphere of influence”, Eastern Europe Bułgarskie wyobrażenia Europy w dobie nowożytnej – od Imperium Osmańskiego do Unii Europejskiej Artykuł ukazuje powstawanie obrazu Europy w społeczeństwie bułgarskim w okresie modernizacji trwającej od początku odrodzenia narodowego (1762) do końca XX wieku. The situation of national minorities and ethnic minorities in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina with particular emphasis on the educational system Autonomous Province of Vojvodina (APV) is an area in the northern part of the Republic of Serbia. On the basis of the Constitution and special statutes in APV the following languages have official status : Serbian, Hungarian, Slovak, Croatian, Romanian and Ruthenian. In addition, this area is the most economically developed throughout the country. Vojvodina is an example of a well-functioning multi‑ethnic communities living in one territory, which in some regions of the Balkans remains an open problem. Therefore government in Belgrade tries to keep the European image of this autonomy to such an extent, that cyclically there appears information about the possibility of obtaining of the total independence of this territory and the separation from the Republic of Serbia. Paradoxically, such speculations can lead to the destabilization in other regions of Serbia. They did not obtain such a level of autonomy and mentioned speculations inspire some minorities into actions in order to get the certain independence (for example Boshniaks from Sandjak in western Serbia). The central authorities are aware of this fact and try to keep the control over all regions of the country that often can lead to ethnic conflicts. Wymuszona zamiana prowadzi faktycznie do przekształcenia narracji historycznych i tożsamości etniczno‑kulturowej. Wprowadzone zmiany toponimów świadczą o systematycznej negacji macedońskiej tożsamości językowej i kulturowej, a w konsekwencji o procesie negowania prawa narodu macedońskiego do własnego państwa narodowego, gdyż główną intencją każdej negacji jest reinterpretacja, przetwarzanie i zmiana rzeczywistości historycznej. The Macedonian language is then declared as an official language in the Macedonian republic and equal amongst the other languages in SFR Yugoslavia. However, the official language in SFR Yugoslavia (the language of international communication, military dealings, one of the core subjects in all elementary schools etc.) was the Serbo‑Croatian language. With the formation of an independent Republic of Macedonia, the Macedonian language became the only official language until the peace deal Ohrid Framework Agreement was signed, when the language of the largest ethnic minority – the Albanian language – gains the status of an official language. The issue of interest of this article is whether the Macedonian language has changed its status and to what extent, what are the terms of legislation for it and the real situation in which it is found in the Republic of Macedonia. The question of the national identity of Slavic people concerns similarities and differences between them, influenced by the specific perception and categorization of reality. After the period of forced transnational integration and constructed linguistic and cultural national communities, the Slavic linguistic views of the world are diversified. Both for Macedonian and Polish people, language is one of the exponents of national identity. Macedonian literary texts translated into Polish enable readers to encounter different cultural phenomena, reflected in artistic visions and symbols. Their perception is quite difficult as it requires profound knowledge and intercultural competence. As examples, we will consider Polish translations of important Macedonian novels, Tvrdoglavi (Polish title: Zawzięci) by Slavko Janevski, Vremeto na kozite (Polish title: Czasy kóz) by Luan Starova, Razgovor so Spinoza: roman‑pajažina by Goce Smilevski (Polish title: Rozmowa ze Spinozą: powieść– pajęczyna) and Skriena kamera (Polish title: Ukryta kamera) by Lidija Dimkovska. It resulted from a diverse place the Communist Yugoslavia had in the Cold War order and its role within the non‑allied countries. As a result semantic relations were different in this discourse. The aim of this article is a reconstruction of the content of one of the most important signs in this language – the sign of Europe basing on the Yugoslav dictator’s (Josip Broz Tito) addresses. Overview and perspectives. Zagadnienia te prezentuje w dwu aspektach, z jednej strony wskazuje najnowsze kierunki badań w tej dziedzinie, z drugiej – analizuje iberyjskie teksty literackie i dziennikarskie poświęcone postawom wobec Słowian. Poza Półwyspem do międzykulturowych spotkań dochodziło m.in. dzięki znacznej ekspansji na Wschód przedstawicieli iberyjskich kół bizne sowych. Nowo powstałe stowarzyszenia, instytucje, ośrodki naukowe i kulturalne, respektując złożoną tożsamość każdego z narodów słowiańskich, Slavia Meridionalis 12 - Summaries prezentują iberyjskim partnerom również obraz Słowian zjednoczonych. Ta właśnie tendencja pozwala przejść w niniejszej analizie od części pierwszej – „Przegląd” do drugiej – „Perspektywy”. Słowa kluczowe: Iberia, Słowianie, Europa, studia iberyjsko‑słowiańskie.
