Jose has been named Administrator at Holy Spirit effective January 1, 2016. He will still maintain all aspects of his Spanish ministry here at St. Rose, as well as, from time to time, celebrate other Masses here at St. Rose. In the spirit of reciprocity, Fr. Luke may also be celebrating some Masses at Holy Cross. We are blessed that we can continue to interact with him, even to a lesser degree. His daily attendance here at St. Rose will be sorely missed. GIVING TREE Our annual “Giving Tree” Advent project will begin next weekend, November 21st & 22nd. We invite you to take a tag from the tree and purchase the gift indicated. We ask that all gifts be left unwrapped. Attach the tag to the outside of the package and place the gift near the tree by Sunday, December 6th. The gifts will be distributed to homebound members of the parish, Catholic residents of Belsky House (UCP), homeless people served through CHIPS, and children whose mothers are in prison. All gifts should be new and unused. This project has been successful in the past and we are confident that our generous parishioners will again respond with love and enthusiasm. THANKSGIVING We are in need of canned vegetables and canned yams for Thanksgiving baskets for the needy families of the parish. SHARING THE WORD OF GOD St. Rose of Lima is having an Advent program consisting of prayers and sharing of gospel readings. The purpose of this program is to assist us in our spiritually growth during this Advent season. We experience the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ during this season, and want to bring Jesus into our home, and into the hearts of our family members. The program begins Saturday, November 28th, at 4:00PM, in the Center, and throughout all Saturdays of Advent. All are welcome to attend. CONGRATULATIONS Our Religious Education Program recently received an award from Bishop DiMarzio for being the program in Brooklyn with the highest amount of money donated to the missions. We want to publicly thank the children who attend our program and their parents for their generosity, concern and love toward those in the world who are suffering and are in need of our assistance. VISIT BY AUXILIARY BISHOP - Witlod Mroziewski On Sunday November 29th, newly ordained Auxiliary Bishop Mroziewski will pay a pastoral visit to St. Rose of Lima on behalf of Bishop Di Marzio. We invite you to join us at the 10:45AM Mass, in the lower church. Parishioners who attend the other Masses on that day are encouraged to attend this special Mass. There will be no Polish Mass on that day. A social will follow in the Center. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the “dwelling place of the Holy Spirit,” and has a destiny of life with God in glory. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one’s “birthday to life,” the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Christians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference. Saturday: Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Margaret of Scotland; St. Gertrude St. Elizabeth of Hungary Dedication of the Basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul in Rome; Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary THE FUTURE The future starts today, not tomorrow. -St. Pope John Paul II HOPE If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes. -St. Clement ENCOURAGEMENT This Sunday’s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus’ teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel’s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ’s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. 10:45 rano w dolnym kościele by jako wspólnota parafialna wielu kultur wspólnie uczestniczyć we ofierze Eucharystii w celebrze ks Biskupa. Wówczas ujrzą Syna Człowieczego, przychodzącego w obłokach z wielką mocą i chwałą. Wtedy pośle On aniołów i zbierze swoich wybranych z czterech stron świata, od krańca ziemi aż do szczytu nieba. -Marcos 13:31
