CZYTANIE ZE ZROZUMIENIEM (13 p.)
Zadanie 1. (7 p.)
Przeczytaj poniższy tekst. Na podstawie informacji w nim zawartych zdecyduj, które zdania
są zgodne z treścią tekstu (T), a które nie (F).
We complain that the British children do not enjoy reading. But how can we expect
them to do it if we don’t get them to love books first?
First of all, we parents, are responsible for instilling the need for reading in our
children from their earliest days. Parents should not wait until their children learn how to read.
Research shows that colourful pictures in books stimulate the baby’s brain. Children who read
with their parents are more intelligent and have better grades later. Reading develops
children’s horizons by teaching about many topics that normally are not present in
conversation. Moreover, it gives parents an opportunity to spend some quality time with their
children, which makes them feel loved, special and confident.
To motivate children to read, let them see that reading is part of your own life.
Children always try to copy what adults do. Also, let your child choose books in a bookstore
and reward them for doing so. This will help them develop their own taste. While reading,
invent different voices for different characters. You can also talk together about the pictures
and the story or let your child create a new story. Above all, make everything fun and magic.
Unfortunately, no matter how much we try, the love for books might get lost when our
children enter schools, where literature becomes a subject to be studied and seldom enjoyed.
Stories become texts that have to be correctly spelled, punctuated and neatly handwritten.
Words become nouns, verbs, adjectives. What’s more, it is all tested and graded. No magic,
no fun, no motivation.
There are countries, however, where the situation looks much better. In Finland, for
example, happier and more literate. Grandparents are welcomed into primary schools to read
to pupils, and children have regular classes with teacher-librarians who show them the love
for books.
In Britain, teachers need to understand how important reading is to their students. The
government needs to give teachers space in the curriculum to do that. This will be a brave
political decision, but one has to be made if we are serious about turning British children into
well-educated and well-prepared people.
1 Parents should start reading with their children when they know how to read. _____
2 Kids whose parents have read books for them do better at school. _____
3 Parents don’t have to read for themselves to teach their children the love for books. _____
4 Reading with your child mustn’t be a boring activity. _____
5 Children at British schools aren’t encouraged to read for pleasure. ____
6 There are no other countries in Europe which could set an example. _____
7 Politicians must allow changes in British schools. _____

Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my opinion on the views presented in your article about computer
games. I must say that I completely disagree with critical opinion of the author on the value of
computer games. Parents and teachers should stop and think why teenagers play computer
games and how to take advantage of the enormous potential that they bring.
First of all, people should not generalize that all computer games are only about
entertainment. There are, for example, many educational games. When teenagers play them,
they can learn about history, geography and philosophy. And many teenagers would prefer to
play such a game than read a coursebook. What is more, when you play strategy games, you
really have to plan, create and imagine. It all encourages logical thinking, decision-making
and realizing the consequences. Moreover, fast-paced games like role-playing or action
games, improve your reflexes, concentration and hand-eye coordination.
Some people say that computer games can damage a teenager’s psyche. However, this
is not always true. Sometimes games may help players deal with their personal problems. You
can escape from your daily stresses into an imaginary world. Shy teenagers often feel safer in
the unreal context of a computer game and become more willing to explore or express
themselves. Not to mention that winning increases their self-confidence. Games may be cheap
way to help people with phobias. For example, playing a game which contains phobia factors
can help them fight their fears. Of course, computer games themselves will not replace the
help of a specialist, but they can help in therapy.
Last but not least, multiplayer online games encourage cooperation and competition one of the most important components of adult life. If the players want to win the game, they
need to talk, advise each other and plan strategies together. Through this, they can end up
making friends. Is that all so bad?
Games are only dangerous when they become an addiction, but in such a situation the
player is the one to blame not the computer game. Generally, games provide numerous
helpful benefits that are still waiting to be noticed and used.
