Thus says the LORD:

and greeted Elizabeth.
Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
when she who is to give birth has borne, and the rest of

his kindred shall return to the children of Israel.
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock
cried out in a loud voice and said,
by the strength of the LORD,
“Blessed are you among women,
in the majestic name of the LORD, his God;
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
and they shall remain, for now his greatness
And how does this happen to me,
shall reach to the ends of the earth;

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me; in holocausts and sin
offerings you took no delight.
Then I said, ‘As is written of me in the scroll, behold, I
come to do your will, O God.’“
First he says, “Sacrifices and offerings, holocausts and sin
offerings, you neither desired nor delighted in.”
These are offered according to the law.
Then he says, “Behold, I come to do your will.”
He takes away the first to establish the second.
By this “will,” we have been consecrated through the
offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Many of our most treasured traditions link the
liturgy of the church with the hearth of the home. The
food on the table at certain feasts and fasts helps to
extend the mystery into everyday life. Tonight, for
example, many families of Italian heritage, especially
those with links to the south of Italy, will settle down to
the “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” or La Vigilia. It is a
command performance for the whole family, as the
saying goes: Natale con I tuui, Pasqua conchi vuoi, or
“Christmas with your family, Easter with whomever
you wish.” Seven different fish, some say one for
each day of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem,
others say one for each sacrament, or one for each
day of creation, are served. Eel and shrimp, lobster
and crab, calamari, pasta with clam sauce, flounder
and hake all abound, but most especially baccala,
dried salted cod. Why? Many say that it is a way to
pay homage to the beasts of the stable who witnessed the holy birth and relinquished their manger to
make way for God. Tonight, if someone asks you to
“pass the shrimp,” you’ll be able to shed a little light
on a menu that is a delicious treasure in our tradition!

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
DECEMBER 20, 2015
herefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall conceive, and
bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel. - Isaiah 7
Fourth Week of Advent
Daily Prayer This Week:
The Fourth Sunday of Advent begins the last week of Advent, which takes us to Christmas on Friday. The reading from
Micah reminds us that of the seemingly unimportant town of
Bethlehem, "from you shall come forth for me one who is to be
ruler in Israel." Luke's gospel offers again the story of Mary's
going to visit her cousin. Elizabeth understands immediately
Mary's situation and praises God saying, "How does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my
ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy."
This may be one of the most difficult weeks to be reflective
throughout each day. This weekend may be quite full for
many of us. Others of us may be alone, apart from the faith
community we will join on Sunday and Friday, perhaps
daily this week. While some of us have had guests staying
with us and a house to clean, others of us will be reviewing
memories and struggling, even a little, with being alone.
If we celebrate the Vigil of Christmas on Christmas Eve,
Matthew's Gospel (though any of the gospels for Christmas
may be used at any of the Christmas liturgies) offers the history of Jesus' family.
Whether this week is full or slow, it is a treasure-filled
opportunity for reflection. Using the same means we've
been using, we can let the richness of this week's readings
and feasts fill the background of each day. Even on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day we can wake up, surrendering
anxiety by letting the anxiety of these days take us to the
scene of our Lord's birth. We can imagine the anxiety that
filled the experience of Mary and Joseph. We can keep in
our consciousness their trust in God. The Christmas music
on the radio or at our church services and liturgies can
bring the faith of these hymns and songs into our hearts.
And, once it is there, these songs of faith will remain in the
background all day long. When we are tempted to worry or
complain, to be hurt or angry, to be frustrated or exhausted, the hymns will draw our hearts to rejoicing and
gratitude.
The first celebration of The Nativity of the Lord is the Mass
at Midnight. The first reading is from Isaiah: “The people who
walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who
dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone.” This powerful
reading deserves a slow contemplation. The Gospel is from
Luke: the journey to Bethlehem, the birth, the angels announce the birth to the shepherds. The second celebration of
The Nativity of the Lord is the Mass at Dawn. The Gospel is
from Luke: the shepherds visit the newborn child. “And Mary
kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.”
Thinking about Stephen the Martyr with a little desire and
focus, can guide our hearts to reflect on the meaning of
Christmas - the gift of self-giving love. We can ask ourselves, what generosity can come from the gratitude I have
in my heart after celebrating the gift of redemption? Who in
my world needs more love? What happens in me when I
think about the people in the world who need my support?
Who is being martyred today? Who is witnessing our
world's rejection?
The third celebration of The Nativity of the Lord is the Mass
during the Day. Here the Gospel is from the beginning of
John's Gospel: “And the Word became flesh and made his
dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the
Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.”
All of us can imagine Jesus, Mary and Joseph going home.
We can imagine their daily lives. We can ask for the grace
to live in God's presence, just as they must have done, and
for the grace to be sensitive to each other and care for
each other as they must have. We can ask that we might
imitate their busy lives, trusting and dependent on God.
Looking on their hidden life together, we can grow in a desire to be more humble, in a peace with greater simplicity,
in a courage to let God take
care of us. Whether we experience the poverty of that
holy stable or the ordinary
simplicity of daily routine, we
can enjoy this week as a special opportunity to be drawn to
a greater closeness with
Jesus.
Luke's Gospel is our guide this week. On the 21st, we repeat
Luke's story of the Visitation. The story continues on the 22nd
with Mary's beautiful response, "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord." On the 23rd is the naming of John by
Zechariah. On the 24th, during the day, is Zechariah's prayer
of praise after being allowed to speak again. The scenes and
canticles, or songs, which are part of the story, are so well
known to us that we can miss hearing them with an open
heart.
December 26th celebrates St. Stephen, the first martyr.
The Sunday that follows Christmas is always the celebration
of the Holy Family. There are wonderful readings from the
Book of Sirach, the First Book of Samuel, and Paul’s letter to
the Colossians or the First Letter of John. The gospel is the
story of the teen aged Jesus teaching in the temple while his
parents could not find him. Jesus goes back home with his
family. “He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and
was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in
her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor
before God and man.”

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
DECEMBER 20, 2015
Jubilee Year of Mercy
December 20, 2015
2015 CHRISTMAS SCHEDULE:
Fourth Sunday of Advent
In proclaiming the Jubilee Year of Mercy,
Pope Francis proclaimed his desire that this Holy
Year be “steeped in mercy,” as we disciples “go out
to every man and woman,” bringing the “balm of
mercy” to “believers and those far away, as a sign
that the Kingdom of God is already present in our
midst!” (Misericordiae Vultus, 5). In her visitation of
Elizabeth, Mary beautifully presents just such an
image. Despite the perils of her pregnancy, not to
mention her preoccupations as a young unwed
mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, “goes out” of
herself, hastening far and over dangerous terrain, to
“bring the balm of God’s tender mercy” in assistance
rendered to her older relative. Since baptism and the
Eucharist have made us, in a way, bearers of the
living Christ within as Mary was, such selfless “going
out” of ourselves to be of loving service to others in
mercy should especially mark our Christmas season
this Jubilee Year.

Deacon Charlie’s Corner
Hi! How is everyone doing as we begin this
Fourth Week of Advent? Christmas is just a
few days away and by now
we should be prepared for
Jesus and for Christmas in
general. The special day is
almost here. Are we ready?
In our Gospel from Luke this week,
Mary set out for the house of Zechariah.
(Do you think she was
going for the Expectant
Mother’s Blessing?)
Elizabeth, knowing and
filled with the Holy Spirit,
said to Mary, “Blessed are
you among women, and blessed is the fruit of
your womb.”
Elizabeth knew Mary was favored by the Lord and
was ready to help in any way she could. The baby
in Elizabeth’s womb knew that Our Savior was
with Mary!
Walk with King Jesus and be a blessing,
Deacon Charlie

DRUGIE CZYTANIE

przychodzi spe³niæ wolê Ojca
EWANGELIA
£k 1,39-45 Maryja jest Matk¹
oczekiwanego Mesjasza
Czytanie z Ksiêgi proroka
Micheasza
To mówi Pan: A ty, Betlejem
Efrata, najmniejsze jesteœ wœród
plemion judzkich. Z ciebie
wyjdzie Ten, który bêdzie w³ada³
w Izraelu, a pochodzenie Jego od
pocz¹tku, od dni wiecznoœci.
Przeto Pan wyda ich a¿ do czasu,
kiedy porodzi, maj¹ca porodziæ.
Wtedy reszta braci Jego powróci
do synów Izraela. I powstanie, i
bêdzie ich pasterzem moc¹ Pana,
przez majestat imienia Pana Boga
swego. Bêd¹ ¿yli bezpiecznie, bo
Jego w³adza rozci¹gnie siê a¿ do
krañców ziemi. A On bêdzie
pokojem.
Oto S³owo Bo¿e.
Czytanie z Listu œwiêtego
Paw³a Aposto³a do
Hebrajczyków
Bracia:
Chrystus przychodz¹c na œwiat
mówi: „Ofiary ani daru nie
chcia³eœ, aleœ Mi utworzy³ cia³o;
ca³opalenia i ofiary za grzech nie
podoba³y siê Tobie. Wtedy
rzek³em: Oto idê. W zwoju ksiêgi
napisano o Mnie, abym spe³nia³
wolê Twoj¹, Bo¿e”.
Wy¿ej powiedzia³: „Ofiar, darów,
ca³opaleñ i ofiar za grzechy nie
chcia³eœ i nie podoba³y siê Tobie”,
choæ sk³ada siê je na podstawie
Prawa. Nastêpnie powiedzia³:
„Oto idê, abym spe³nia³ wolê
Twoj¹”. Usuwa jedn¹ ofiarê, aby
ustanowiæ inn¹. Na mocy tej woli
uœwiêceni jesteœmy przez ofiarê
cia³a Jezusa Chrystusa raz na
zawsze.
Oto S³owo Bo¿e.
S³owa Ewangelii wed³ug
œwiêtego £ukasza
W tym czasie Maryja wybra³a siê
i posz³a z poœpiechem w góry do
pewnego miasta w pokoleniu
Judy. Wesz³a do domu
Zachariasza i pozdrowi³a El¿bietê.
Gdy El¿bieta us³ysza³a
pozdrowienie Maryi, poruszy³o
siê dzieci¹tko w jej ³onie, a Duch
Œwiêty nape³ni³ El¿bietê. Wyda³a
ona okrzyk i powiedzia³a:
„B³ogos³awiona jesteœ miêdzy
niewiastami i b³ogos³awiony jest
owoc Twojego ³ona. A sk¹d¿e mi
to, ¿e Matka mojego Pana
przychodzi do mnie? Oto, skoro
g³os Twego pozdrowienia
zabrzmia³ w moich uszach,
poruszy³o siê z radoœci dzieci¹tko
w ³onie moim. B³ogos³awiona
jesteœ, któraœ uwierzy³a, ¿e spe³ni¹
siê s³owa powiedziane Ci od
Pana”.
Oto s³owo Pañskie.
PSALM RESPONSORYJNY:
Ps 24,1-2,3-4,5-6
Odnów nas, Bo¿e, i daj nam
zbawienie.
Us³ysz, Pasterzu Izraela,
Ty, który zasiadasz nad
cherubinami.
WzbudŸ sw¹ potêgê
i przyjdŸ nam z pomoc¹. Powróæ,
Bo¿e Zastêpów,
wejrzyj z nieba, spójrz i nawiedŸ
tê winoroœl.
I chroñ to, co zasadzi³a Twoja
prawica, latoroœl, któr¹ umocni³eœ
dla siebie. Wyci¹gnij rêkê nad
mê¿em Twojej prawicy,
nad synem cz³owieczym, którego
umocni³eœ w swej s³u¿bie.
Ju¿ wiêcej nie odwrócimy siê od
Ciebie,
daj nam nowe ¿ycie, a bêdziemy
Ciê chwalili.
Odnów nas, Bo¿e, i daj nam
zbawienie.
