People in the USA love food from all over the world but there are also two great allAmerican successes: the hamburger and Coca-Cola.
In 1937 the McDonald brothers, Dick and Mack, opened a little drive-in restaurant in Pasadena,
California. They served hot dogs and milk shakes. When the war had ended, they had twenty
waiters and all the teenagers in town ate hamburgers there. Three years later they got paper
boxes and bags for the hamburgers. They also put the price down from 30 to 15 cents and cut
the menu down from twenty-five things to only nine.
There were no more waiters – it was self-service so it was cheaper and faster and they had
windows all around the kitchen – so everybody could see it was clean.
Parents started bringing their children to the restaurant and poor families could also eat at a
restaurant for the first time.
Then, in the 1960s the McDonald’s company opened hundreds of its restaurants all over the
States and in 1971 they opened restaurants in Japan, Germany and Australia.
Now the McDonald’s company opens a new restaurant every 8 hours! There are more than
14,000 restaurants in over 70 countries. The largest one is in Beijing in the People’s Republic
of China and the smallest in Ginza, Tokyo.
McDonald’s restaurants serve almost exactly the same food in every country but in Italy
