Materiał i metody. Zbadano 183 uczniów (gimnazjum i liceum). Średnia wieku wynosiła 14,71 (SD=1,42). W badaniach zastosowano test d2, refleksomierz oraz aparat krzyżowy. Wyniki. Nieznaczne różnice stwierdzono w zakresie koordynacji wzrokowo-ruchowej. Summary 5684 5 0 20 is c Word count: Tables: Figures: References: y is - for pe Background. There has been a recent increase in the amount of attention put not only to a good physical preparation of sportspeople but also to extending their psychological skills and combining them with motoric capacities. This research aimed to examine whether adolescents attending sport classes differ from their peers from non-sport classes with regards to focusing attention, time of simple and complex reactions as well as visualmotor coordination. Material and methods. The study included 183 middle and high school students. The average age came up to 14.71 (SD=1.42). The study used d2 test, reflex meter and visualmotor coordination testing device. Results. It has been proved that students attending sport classes do not differ with regards to the time of reaction from their peers who are not engaged in professional sport. Moreover, the study showed that the people who obtained higher results concerning perception skills and attention focus also obtained shorter reaction times with regard to visual-motor coordination and committed less mistakes. The shorter simple and complex reaction times were related to a better performance in attention focus test mainly in sport groups. Conclusions. No significant differences with regards to simple and complex reaction, speed of work and attention focus have been observed between students attending sport and non-sport classes. Only slight differences were observed with regards to visual-motor coordination. op This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Background se on ly - dis tr ibu tio np roh ibit Efficient functioning of attention processes, ensuring a quick reaction to stimuli which come from the surrounding environment, is indispensable in everyday life. It seems particularly significant for people engaged in various sport disciplines, especially professionals [1]. Attention is a process which is responsible for screening information coming from the surrounding environment which prevents the cognitive system from being overloaded by extensive amount of data [2]. There are four main functions of attention: 1) focus or selectivity of attention is the ability to highlight the significant information with simultaneous suppressing of the distracting stimuli; 2) sustained attention or vigilance is connected with the ability to maintain attention over a certain period of time; 3) divided attention is related to the ability of performing numerous tasks at the same time; 4) alternating attention is responsible for changing the centre of attention and tasks [3,4]. The effectiveness of these processes depends on the psychophysical condition, the experienced emotions, the level of tiredness and motivation. These factors may not only limit the field of our perception, extend the time necessary to perform a task but also bring about difficulties in focusing attention and increase the number of committed mistakes or omitting of significant information [3,5]. Regardless of the sport discipline, the ability to react quickly to the appearing stimuli is a significant element of every sportsperson’s training. The reaction time to an appearing stimulus may be determined as the time between the occurrence of the stimulus and the moment of starting the reaction by the examined person [6]. There are three categories of reaction times: 1. simple – one stimulus triggers out only one, predetermined motoric reaction; 2. complex – the examined person is expected to react to only one of two or more occurring stimuli. When a stimulus which is incompatible with the instruction comes up, the respondent has to refrain from taking any action. 3. choice – the subject has to perform various reactions depending on the stimulus [7,8]. It has been acknowledged that the reaction time depends on numerous factors related to the stimulus itself (the number of alternative stimuli and their similarity to the main stimulus). The factors influencing the reaction time which depend on the experimental subject include: age, gender (men obtain shorter reaction times), psychical condition (e.g. stress), time of the day (better reaction between 11a.m. and 5 p.m.), tiredness (e.g. demanding training), diet and stimulants, lack of sleep, sport mastery or person’s genetics [8-10]. The reaction time (especially simple) is, in large measure, determined by physiological factors [7], yet numerous research proved that reaction time may be shortened through training [8,11]. This research is aimed to verify whether the adolescents attending sport classes vary from their peers from non-sport classes with regards to chosen psychomotor variables (focusing attention, time of simple and complex reactions as well as visual-motor coordination). is c op y is for pe rso na lu Sprawne działanie procesów uwagi, zapewniające szybkie reagowanie na pojawiające się w otoczeniu bodźce, to funkcje niezbędne w codziennym życiu. Uczniowie klas sportowych i niesportowych a wybrane zmienne psychomotoryczne 124 - ed . Material and methods Sample group The tests involved adolescents from sport and general education classes of middle and secondary sport schools in Bydgoszcz. Data was collected from 183 students, 94 of whom attended general education classes (with extended curriculum in mathematics-physics, linguistics, polytechnics) and 84 – sport classes (women basketball – 12 people, swimming – 60 people, Olympic taekwondo – 24 people). The sample group consisted of 91 girls and 92 boys. The average age of the group was 14.71 years (SD= 1.42). The age span was between 13 and 17 years old. Aparat krzyżowy umożliwia pomiar średnich, minimalnych i maksymalnych czasów reakcji, liczby błędów w tempie swobodnym (ApKS) i wymuszonym (ApKW) oraz liczby trafień w tempie wymuszonym (ApKW_traf). Test d2 pozwala określić poziom koncentracji uwagi i spostrzegawczość [12]. W teście d2 wyróżniono następujące wskaźniki: WZ – szybkość pracy (ogólna liczba wszystkich opracowanych liter), B – suma wszystkich błędów, %B – procent wszystkich błędów (wskaźnik dokładności spostrzegania), WZ-B – ogólna zdolność spostrzegania (szybkość spostrzegania korygowana przez liczbę popełnionych błędów), ZK – zdolność koncentracji (różnica pomiędzy liczbą liter skreślonych prawidłowo i błędnie). Tools The times of simple and complex reactions were measured with a reflex meter which allowed to verify the ability of the testees to react quickly to light stimuli. The reflex meter allows for determining average, minimum and maximum time of simple (RT1) and complex (RT2) reactions as well as the number of committed mistakes (RT_er) [7]. In order to determine the level of visual-motor coordination among the examined students the researchers applied a visual-motor coordination testing device. The device has 2 basic modes: free mode, where the following stimuli occur after a proper reaction is taken and forced mode, where the following stimuli are generated by the device at a specified speed. The visual-motor coordination testing device enables to measure the average, minimum and maximum reaction times, the number of mistakes in the free mode (CD1) and the forced mode (CD2) and the number of hits in the forced mode (CD2_hit). This device allows to verify the speed of psychomotor reaction and the speed of taking decision under time pressure and under tiredness. The observation of the testees while performing the tasks also allows for obtaining information about the attention focusing of the subjects and ways of reacting under time pressure. For estimating attention, the authors used the Polish adaptation of Brickenkamp’s d2 Test of Attention [12] by Dajek [13]. The respondent is expected to find and cross out a letter “d” marked with two dashes from a combination of characters consisting of letters “d” and “p”. The d2 test allows for determining the level of attention focus and perceptiveness [12]. The following indicators were set for the d2 test: TA – the speed of work (the total number of all marked letters), Er – the sum of all mistakes, %Er – the percentage of all mistakes (the indicator of the accuracy of perception), TA-Er – the general perception (the speed of perception corrected by the number of committed mistakes), Con – the ability to focus attention (the difference between the number of properly and improperly marked characters). op y is for pe rso na lu se on ly - dis tr ibu tio np roh ibit Próba osób badanych Testom zostali poddani adolescenci z klas sportowych i ogólnych na poziomie gimnazjum i liceum ze szkoły sportowej w Bydgoszczy. Pupils from sports and non-sports classes and selected psychomotor variables 125 Czas reakcji prostej i złożonej W zakresie reakcji prostej uczniowie klas sportowych reagowali średnio w 270 ms (SD=40 ms), a klas niesportowych w 280 ms (SD=50 ms). Najszybsza reakcja w grupie sportowej wynosiła 110 ms, a w klasach niesportowych 150 ms. Najwolniejsze reakcje proste wynosiły odpowiednio: 790 ms w klasach sportowych i 750 ms w niesportowych. Biorąc pod uwagę reakcję złożoną uczniowie klas sportowych średnio reagowali 350 ms (SD=60 ms), a z klas niesportowych 360 ms (SD=60 ms). Najszybsze reakcje w obydwu grupach wynosiły 180 ms. Najdłuższą reakcję złożoną odnotowano w grupie sportowej i wynosiła 890 ms (Tab. 1) Różnice w zakresie wszystkich zmiennych dotyczących reakcji prostej i złożonej były nieistotne statystycznie na poziomie p<0,05 (test U Manna-Whitney’a). Simple and complex reactions time With regards to the simple reaction, students attending sport classes reacted in 270 ms (SD=40 ms) on average and non-sport classes in 280 ms (SD=50 ms). The quickest reaction in the sport group was 110 ms whereas among non-sport classes it came up to 150 ms. The slowest simple reactions equalled respectively 790 ms in sport classes and 750 ms in nonsport classes. As for the complex reaction, sportclass students reacted in 350 ms (SD=60 ms) on average, and non-sport – in 360 ms (SD=60 ms). The quickest reactions in both groups were 180 ms. The longest complex reaction occurred in sport group and it equalled 890 ms (Tab. 1). The differences between all variables concerning simple and complex reaction were statistically insignificant at the level of p<0.05 (Mann-Whitney U test). Z kolei uczniowie klas niesportowych w tempie swobodnym reagowali 1,26 s (SD=0,30 s), a w wymuszonym 0,56 s (SD=0,17 s). Visual-motor coordination The shortest reaction time to a stimulus in the free mode came up to a little above half a second, both among sport and non-sport students. The longest reaction time (27 s) was obtained by a sport-class student. The total reaction time to all provided stimuli was characterised by a large spread. The average result in the sport group equalled 64.80 s (SD= 13.57), and in non-sport group – 61.62 s (SD=12.87) (Tab. 2). The analysis of the results obtained in the forced mode revealed that the weakest students from both class types reacted to only 4 provided stimuli. The best student was from a non-sport class and he reacted properly to 49 stimuli. The average result for students attending sport classes was about 31 stimuli, whereas among non-sport students – about 33. Students from sport classes reacted at a similar average speed to single stimuli (1.33 s; SD=0.28 s). The non-sport students in the free mode reacted at the speed of 1.26 s (SD=0.30 s), and in the forced mode – at 0.56 s (SD=0.17 s). After verifying the differences between the experimental groups with Mann-Whitney U test, it turned out that non-sport class students committed less mistakes (Z=-2.82; p=0.005) and obtained shorter reaction times in the free mode (Z=-2.00; p=0.045). On the other hand, the average work speed on the visual-motor coordination testing device, in the free mode, and the number of correct markings in the forced mode, allow for appraising the group, in general, at the level of 6th sten which corresponds with an average result. rso na lu Odnosząc uzyskane wyniki do norm podanych przez autorów instrukcji do aparatury badawczej [14,15], można stwierdzić, że średnie uczniów, niezależnie od rodzaju klasy, zarówno dla reakcji prostej, jak i złożonej, odpowiadają 9 stenowi i rezultaty te można ocenić jako bardzo dobre. First of all, the worked more slowly, i.e. marked a smaller number of letters (among sport classes TA=453.29, SD= 83.78, and among non-sport classes TA=468.70, SD= 75.57). Second of all, sport-class students obtained a lower result with regards to perceptiveness (TA-Er= 420.95, SD=75.63). Finally, they obtained a lower indicator of the ability to focus attention (Con= 189.13, SD=39.11). They committed more mistakes on average (Er=32.33, SD=29.59), which also made a higher percentage of the whole test (%B=6.86, SD=5.42) (Tab. 3). Due to the fact that standard values exist only for chosen years of middle and secondary schools it was impossible to compare the obtained results. Therefore the analysis was only based on raw results. The significance of the differences between both groups of students was verified with Mann-Whitney U test. At the level of p<0.05, no significant differences between students attending sport and non-sport classes were acknowledged. - This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. - This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. - This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. - This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Litwic-Kamińska K. i wsp. Zgodnie z wcześniejszymi doniesieniami umiarkowa- The results of earlier research indicate that sport activity has a beneficial impact on visual-motor coordination and reaction times at all ages, including adolescence [16-19]. Therefore, it is expectable that students attending sport classes ought to obtain better results performing visual-motor coordination tests and better reaction times. This research has not confirmed the assumptions. Students attending sport classes did not significantly differ from their peers attending non-sport classes. Seeking the causes of such state of affairs has lead to several conclusions which provoke further and deeper analyses of the obtained results. With regards to simple and differential reaction the mean values fall into the range of average or below average. The existing standards provided by the producer of the testing device concern occupational groups and, hence, may not be particularly relevant with regards to younger people. The comparison of the data to the standards presented by Kwiatkowski and his associates [7] returns totally different sten values. It is also noteworthy, that the results obtained in our research reveal a wide spread. The minimal times, according to the standards presented by Kwiatkowski et al. [7], may be interpreted as high, whereas the maximum times, obtained by the tested students, vary significantly from the standards. Based on an interview with a guidance counsellor and an analysis of school documentation, it has been noticed that students from sport classes, on average, achieved lower educational results. Among them, were also students with difficulties in focusing attention diagnosed by Psychological and Pedagogical Counselling Centre. Nevertheless, their high physical fitness enabled them to perform well during sport rivalry. Such observation seems concordant with the research review by Taras [20], who assumes that cognitive benefits from undertaking physical activity may be of short-term character. There is no explicit data which would confirm a long-lasting impact physical activity has on cognitive processes. It may also account for the tested students from sport classes not achieving better results unlike it had been presumed. Another problem in studying groups determined on the basis of belonging to either sport or non-sport classes, is that the very belonging to a sport class is not synonymous to achieving successes in sport and the level of the undertaken physical activity. Among non-sport-class students were individuals who undertook recreational sport activity or practiced in an external club (however, unlike sport-class students, their training sessions took place only several times a week). According to earlier findings, moderate physical activity may be beneficial to cognitive functioning of students [21]. In turn, the high intensity of training sessions among students attending sport classes, may have resulted in overload. These interrelations occurred more often and achieved a higher correlation coefficient among students attending sport classes. On the other hand, a shorter reaction time, smaller number of committed mistakes and higher number of proper reactions were related to a higher work speed in the focusing test (TA). It was especially visible among sport-class students (Tab. 5). Th This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Z kolei krótszy czas reakcji, mniejsza liczba popełnionych błędów i większa liczba prawidłowych reakcji wiązały się z większą szybkością pracy w teście koncentracji (WZ). Szczególnie ujawniło się to u uczniów klas sportowych (Tab. 5). - This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Litwic-Kamińska K. et al. Pupils from sports and non-sports classes and selected psychomotor variables 129 the research, other variables were additionally measured, including the level of tiredness, hunger or the time spent in front of a computer. Students attending sport classes reported a higher level of tiredness and hunger immediately before the test, which may have influenced their results. The experiences reported by students were connected with a demanding everyday schedule. The sportspeople did two training sessions daily (in the morning and afternoon) and had only short breaks between lessons for eating, which, combined with high energetic expenditures, made it impossible to make up for the necessary calories they had burnt during training. It conforms with the findings that the effectiveness of attention depends on the psychophysical condition of a subject [3,5]. Wnioski Conclusions tio np roh ibit ibu dis tr se on ly - 1. Students attending sport classes did not significantly differ from their peers from non-sport classes with regards to simple and complex reaction times (reflex meter test). They were also characterised by similar work speed, ability to focus (d2 test) and slightly differed with respect to visualmotor coordination (visual-motor coordination testing device). 2. The analysis of the mean results obtained by all students reveals a wide spread of reaction times. It seems worthwhile, to verify the marginal cases through further analyses and repeat the analysis of the results excluding them. 3. It seems advisable to perform future tests at a similar time (the same hour during their school day, e.g. only before noon). Such procedure may limit the influence of tiredness and hunger on the results. Additionally, testing all students at similar time will allow for better control over the test procedure itself.
