The aim of the Medical Writing course is to provide professional support to authors and would-be authors of medical papers.
Participants will acquire up-to-date information on the requirements for submitting articles, publication structure and common
problems encountered by authors, plus some of the “tricks of the trade” that professional writers use.
PROGRAM
 The elements of a paper: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion (IMRAD)
 Writing in English: Common problems, what makes text difficult/easy to read, using paragraphs effectively, jargon and
technical terminology
 How to write abstracts and summaries, letters to the Editor, and covering letters
 The editorial process: How a journal treats submitted articles, the peer-review process, why papers are rejected, what
to do if your article is rejected/accepted, and how to respond to reviewers
 Managing bibliographies effectively - reference management software
 Review a manuscript, identify its shortcomings and suggest improvements (Workshop)
 Write an abstract, discuss the covering letter and respond to the referees’ comments (Workshop)
MEDICAL WRITING - MASTER CLASS

Medical Writing Master Classes are run by an experienced professional medical writer and trainer, Dr John Carpenter. Each
participant will be asked to submit an example of their writing (preferably a manuscript in progress) in advance of the workshop
for Dr Carpenter to analyse. This workshop is intended for those with considerable experience of writing manuscripts in English
but who wish to hone and further improve their skills. After the Master Class, all participants will have their own manuscripts
corrected by Dr John Carpenter. Only 15 participant can attend.
WORKSHOPS PROGRAM:
 Structure and ease of reading - illustrated with examples (what makes sentences difficult/easy to read, punctuation for
clarity, using paragraphs)
 Getting to the point – illustrated with examples (length, how to present your results, graphs and tables)
 Jargon, abbreviations and acronyms - illustrated with examples (when and when not to use jargon, why and when to
use abbreviations)
 Grammar, syntax and spelling – illustrated with examples (common problems with tenses, using definite and indefinite
articles, word order and undefined pronouns)

The aim of this course is to provide a refresh of your knowledge of statistics gained during medical training, increase your
understanding what methodology and parameters to use in the analysis of specific research projects and clinical trials, their
strengths and weaknesses, how to critically evaluate the results of the statistical analysis and how to best report on methodology
and outcomes in manuscripts and presentations.
PROGRAM
 Using statistics in medical writing - introduction and basic concepts: types of variables, levels of measurement,
descriptive statistics (mean, median, range, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, box plot, normal and nonnormal distributions, parametric and nonparametric tests), point estimates and confidence intervals (probability,
standard error of the mean), sample size calculations
 Using statistics in medical Writing (case studies and exercises)
 Graphical statistical analytic techniques - introduction and basic concepts: correlation and regression analyses (r, p and
the 95% CI for a correlation), survival in clinical trials, Kaplan-Meier graphs and analyses

ORAL PRESENTATION SKILLS

This individually tailored Oral Presentation Skills workshop is intended for those who need to prepare and deliver oral
presentations. You will receive training in PowerPoint design, how to pace your delivery, voice production, using microphones
and tips on how to make your presentation effective. Before the workshop, you will be expected to prepare a 7 minute
presentation illustrated with PowerPoint slides. During the workshop, you will have a chance to give your presentation and
receive constructive feedback from the workshop leader. The workshop leader will share with you his years of experience in
giving oral presentations and will pass on to you some key ‘tricks of the trade’.
WORKSHOPS PROGRAM:
 Tricks of the trade (making and keeping contact with your audience, how to be heard: voice production & using
microphones, dealing with nerves, pacing and the importance of silence)
 Using PowerPoint slides effectively: software tricks, laser pointers, dealing with questions, and troublesome attendees
