Należą do nich zarówno powłoki kompensacyjne o grubości ścianki rzędu 0.1 mm jak i jarzma otaczające uzwojenia magnesów o grubości około 1 mm. Wszystkie wyżej wymienione problemy stanowią podstawę projektowania zarówno akceleratorów cząstek elementarnych (magnesów nadprzewodzących) jak i nadprzewodzących linii przesyłu energii bez strat. XLVI Sympozjon „Modelowanie w mechanice” MODELLING THE THERMO-MECHANICAL PHENOMENA IN THE SUPERCONDUCTING PARTICLE ACCELERATORS Modern high-energy physics develops new challenging superconductivity based scientific instruments. Particle accelerators are certainly an excellent example of instruments that are designed to initiate and accelerate high-energy particle beams to the speed close to that of light. The superconducting magnets – basic bricks of particle accelerators – work usually either at the temperature of liquid helium (4.2 K) or at the temperature of superfluid helium (below 2.17 K). In the structures loaded at extremely low temperatures new thermo-mechanical phenomena occur. Some of them like serrated (discontinuous) yielding, plastic strain induced phase transformation or evolution of micro-damage are of fundamental importance for the integrity and life-time of the structural components. Both serrated yielding and strain induced phase transformation are characteristic of low temperature response of ductile materials like stainless steel or copper. In particular, discontinuous yielding has to be described in the framework of thermodynamics of processes that occur in the “frozen” metal lattice. Here, special attention is focused on the phonon mechanisms of heat transport in the investigated temperature range. Another important issue is related to the phase transformation that takes place in liquid helium at the temperature close to 2.17 K. This process leads to replacement of liquid helium by the superfluid helium that has specific quantum features. The phase transformation is of the 2nd order (according to the Ehrenfest classification) and leads to creation of the transformation (lambda) front that moves at variable speed. Analysis of lambda front propagation and of the accompanying heat exchange with the environment is the main subject of modelling. Based on this model unique heat exchangers designed for the temperature range below 4.5 K are constructed. Superconducting magnets contain a number of thin-walled components loaded in cryogenic conditions. The wall thickness stretches from 0.1 mm in the case of corrugated shells (expansion bellows) to 1 mm for collars surrounding the superconducting coils and 10 mm for helium vessels. Modelling the response of thin-walled structures at low temperatures covers stability analysis under quasi-static and cyclic loads, the analysis of phase transformation in the plastically active parts of the structure as well as the evolution of micro-damage fields. Modelling the structural response is coupled with the appropriate choice of chemical composition of the material and deals with description of processes at the mesoscopic and the macroscopic levels. All of the above mentioned problems are integrated in the design process of particle accelerators (superconducting magnets) and superconducting lines of energy transfer without losses.
