GORCZYCKI G.G. Uwagę zwraca poziom jego wykształcenia: w Pradze studiował nauki wyzwolone i filozofię, a w Wiedniu teologię i tam zapewne zdobył też wiedzę i umiejętności muzyczne. GORCZYCKI zachowanej do dziś w wawelskiej świątyni. Do historii wszedł jednak przede wszystkim jako znakomity muzyk i kompozytor, sprawujący funkcję katedralnego Magister capellae nieprzerwanie od roku 1698 aż do śmierci. W 1702 roku został też powołany do kolegium tzw. angelistów, uświetniających śpiewem figuralnym liturgię sprawowaną w katedrze przy konfesji św. Stanisława. Zachowana do naszych czasów twórczość Gorczyckiego obejmuje 50 kompozycji o autorstwie pewnym i 32 utwory mu przypisywane. Kompozytor wykorzystał tu dwie techniki: cantus firmus i przeimitowania. Kolejne trzy dzieła mają obsadę wokalno-instrumentalną z basso continuo i należą do stylu koncertującego. W koncercie Laetatus sum wykorzystany jest w całości tekst Psalmu 122 (według numeracji hebrajskiej), przynależnego do liturgii nieszporów w określone święta roku kościelnego. Zespół wykonawczy stanowią tu cztery głosy wokalne (canto, alto, tenore, basso) oraz dwoje skrzypiec, dwie trąbki naturalne (w rejestrze clarino) i basso continuo. Technika koncertująca przejawia się w dynamicznej zmienności obsady (od solo do tutti) i rozmaitości stosowanych środków (różne odmiany imitacji, dialogowanie głosów z instrumentami, przemienność melodyki figuracyjnej i deklamacyjnej), przy czym podstawą regulacji przebiegu pozostają wersety psalmu. Użycie trąbek nadaje kompozycji charakterystyczne brzmienie, współgrające z treścią psalmu. G.G. G.G. GORCZYCKI 13 ELŻBIETA ZWOLIŃSKA Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki, arguably the most eminent Polish composer of the late Baroque, is a figure distinguished from others of the period not only by his compositional attributes but also by a relatively large amount of surviving works and a widely recognized biography. A Silesian, he was born in 1665 in Rozbark near Bytom and died on 30th April 1734 in Kraków. Attention is drawn to the high level of his education: he studied liberal arts and philosophy in Prague and theology in Vienna where no doubt he acquired his musical knowledge and skills. He came to Kraków no later than 1690 where he took holy orders and remained for the rest of his life, apart from two years spent in Chełmno as teacher at the Academy and leader of the Chapel at the Archpresbyterial Church. During this period he may also have made a trip to Rome. He held various functions and high offices in the Church and was remembered by the clergy and faithful as a dedicated priest and a paragon of Christian virtues, which sentiments remain etched on the 14 G.G. GORCZYCKI memorial plaque, which survives to this day in the Wawel Chapel. Historically however he is remembered above all as an outstanding musician and composer, who held the post of Magister capellae continuously from 1698 until his death. In 1702 he was also appointed to the College of so-called Angelists whose figural singing added splendour to the liturgy celebrated at the cathedral of the St Stanislaus Confession. Gorczycki’s surviving contribution includes 50 compositions of established authorship and 32 attributed to him. They consist almost exclusively of polyphonic settings of sacred Latin texts, composed in various genres and styles for the needs of Wawel Cathedral’s rich liturgy. The composer’s output comprises vocal works reaching back to the a cappella style of the Renaissance (motets, hymns, masses), vocal-instrumental compositions in the concertante style of the Baroque (vocal concertos) and a group of chorale cantatas (mainly hymns) supported by instrumental accompaniment in the vocal parts. Gorczycki composed primarily for the ensemble he led yet some of his vocal works could have been intended for the earlier mentioned College of Angelists or the Capella Rorantistarum associated with the King Sigismund Chapel. Furthermore the Wawel Kapellmeister’s contributions were appreciated not only within his Kraków milieu, as his works also found their way into the repertoires of other Church ensembles (e.g. the featured Completorium comes from an extant copy held in the archive of the church in Raków Opatowski, while Laetatus sum – from the Benedictine Order in Sandomierz; he was also known in Wieluń and the Spisz region). G.G. GORCZYCKI 15 * * * The four works featured in this recording allow us to become acquainted with Gorczycki’s various compositional genres and styles as well as his masterly use of counterpoint and concertante techniques. An example of polyphony in stile antico is the Advent Missa Rorate scored for: canto, alto, tenore, basso and falls into the category of the so-called Missa brevis (with the omission of Credo). The standard sections of the Ordinary of the Mass are preceded by the introit Rorate caeli and conclude with a setting of the Advent antiphon Ecce Dominus veniet, attributed to Gorczycki, where the composer exploits the two techniques of cantus firmus and imitation. A distinguishing feature of the work is its melodic material drawn not only from the liturgical chorale but above all from four early Polish Advent songs, which Gorczycki skillfully incorporates into the polyphonic texture of the standard order of the Mass. The three remaining works are vocal-instrumental with basso continuo composed in concertante style. Illuxit sol (Motetto de Martyribus) for five voices (canto I & II, alto, tenore, basso), string ensemble (two violins and three violas) and basso continuo belongs to the vocal concerto genre, although due to its text and musical setting it is sometimes also described as a cantata. The work is associated with the Feast Days of the Martyrs, which in the Kraków Cathedral (considering its patron saints) were celebrated with particular 16 G.G. GORCZYCKI pomp and ceremony. In this piece Gorczycki exploits the emotional rhetoric of the extra-liturgical text, preserving its structure and expressive atmosphere in the musical layer. While listening attention is drawn to such elements as the sound and role of the instruments, the elaborate part of the soprano and bass or the method of creating musical tension following the rhetorical question Quis me separabit? (What can separate me?) and denial (non separabit), which accompanies the remembrance of suffering (veniant – let come) that a martyr is prepared to accept for the love of Christ. In concerto Laetatus sum the composer exploits in its entirety the text of Psalm 122 (in Hebrew numbering) associated with the liturgy of vespers during specific Church feasts. The ensemble consists of four vocal parts (canto, alto, tenore, basso), two violins, two natural trumpets (in clarino register) and basso continuo. The work’s concertante technique relies on a dynamic alternation of the ensemble (from solo to tutti) and a variety of applied procedures (various modes of imitation, dialogue between voice and instruments, alternating melodic figuration and declamation), whose narrative process is based throughout on the verses of the psalm. The use of trumpets endows the work with a characteristic sound, which corresponds to the narrative of the psalm. G.G. GORCZYCKI 17 Completorium is an extensive, 7 – movement work to texts of the Compline, the liturgy to the final Church service of the day. The set consists consecutively of four psalms: No. 4, 32, 91 and 134 (Hebrew numbering), the Hymn Te lucis ante terminum, the Responsory In manus tuas, Domine and the Canticle of Simeon Nunc dimittis servum tuum Domine. The work is scored for the same performance forces as Laetatus sum, albeit both trumpets exploited only in the opening and closing movements, and one trumpet – in the middle movement. Similarities to Laetatus can also be seen in the method of setting the psalm texts of the Completorium – as in terms of style and form they are both vocal concertos. On the other hand expressive contrast through changes of tempo and texture is introduced to the set in the hymn and responsary, the two movements containing the main narrative of the evening liturgy – a prayer for God’s protection during the hours of night. In the setting of the first strophe Te lucis ante terminum Gorczycki uses a cantus firmus technique and – probably to give greater depth to the narrative – in the tenor part exploits the melody of another, closely related hymn – Christe qui lux es dies. The concertante style returns in the jubilant closing canticle complemented by a polyphonic finale in the form of a fugue. 18 G.G. GORCZYCKI * * * The works of Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki are today recognized both as valuable records of early Polish music and above all as compositions of great aesthetic value. They constitute a concert repertoire yet fulfill a somewhat different function than during the composer’s times. Musicians, reaching today for the works of the Wawel Kapellmeister written three centuries ago, search for specific interpretive means of attaining an optimal sound and extracting fully the artistic qualities of his music. A perfect outcome of such research is the performance of works featured in this recording. Translation: Anna Kaspszyk G.G. GORCZYCKI 19 20 G.G. GORCZYCKI G.G. Słowo u podstaw muzyki – to klucz do niniejszego nagrania. G.G. GORCZYCKI 25 ANDRZEJ KOSENDIAK For centuries, concert performances consisted almost exclusively of contemporary music, as was the case in the 18th century, during the times of G.G. Gorczycki. We know what repertoire was performed not only in Wawel Castle but also in many other centres. In order to be ‘up to speed with repertoire’ publications and manuscripts of the latest works were imported while the duties of Kapellmeisters included both the preparation and performance of known musical works and above all the composition of new cantatas, concertos, sonatas and oratorios. Changes taking place in music of the 20th century caused an enormous gulf between what composers were contributing and what was acceptable repertoire to the listening public. For the first time in history, contemporary music became completely alien to contemporary audiences. Progressively works from earlier epochs began to complement concert programmes and 26 G.G. GORCZYCKI were performed according to the time-honoured rule: like works contemporary to their performers. A radical change to this approach did not come until the second half of the 20th century. A renewed interest in the musical past significantly broadened knowledge related to music of bygone epochs and resulted in a striving for ‘historical truth’ and the presentation of given works in the style they were performed in at the time of their conception. Today, following a lengthy period of so-called period performances based on knowledge of earlier eras’ instrumentarium, performance practices and musical styles, it is necessary to resolve many intrinsic factors determining the final format of a given work. I have had many opportunities of performing Gorczycki’s works, which have strengthened my conviction regarding this composer’s exceptional art. The featured recording constitutes, as it were, a sum total of these experiences. Hence the necessity to include stylistically varied works, whose very variety is a characteristic quality of the composer’s entire contribution. Alongside stylistically concertante works, the recording also features Missa Rorate written in an early polyphonic style; early albeit contemporary to the composer, a feature we have tried to convey in our performance. In terms of phrasing our point of reference is the word, sentence, and its melodic accentuation not only in movements with a predominance of syllabic accents and nota contra nota textures (as e.g. in Gloria) but also in imitative movements with G.G. GORCZYCKI 27 melodic melisma (in Kyrie). Such an approach, expanded by marked elaborate rhetoric in Completorium, Laetatus sum and Illuxit sol, is obvious, in my opinion indispensible and no longer requiring justification, nevertheless as mentioned earlier an approach also exploited in the melismatic passages of the Mass and the hymn Te lucis from Completorium. Music founded on word is the key to the featured recording. This guiding principle concerns not only the work’s vocal layer; to a greater extent it also refers to all the instrumental parts, which remain in complete harmony with the narrative and expression of the spoken word, both when colla parte techniques are applied and in passages of imitative dialogue in the vocal parts. Consequently the instruments sing rather than play, and moreover sing by ‘exploiting’ the verbal text used by the composer. And what of the tonal layer, the instrumentarium? Here I have endeavoured to retain a balance between historical knowledge and my own sensibilities and those of my collaborators. Naturally we perform on period instruments: two violins, a baroque cello, a chest organ and natural trumpets. Yet the list of instruments Gorczycki had at his disposal did not feature a theorbo, which we have included in the recording to enhance the continuo section. However since the concertante style originated in Italy where the theorbo was commonly applied, the use of this instrument is historically 28 G.G. GORCZYCKI justified and endows the continuo part with clarity and lightness of style. The viol parts in Illuxit sol are performed by viola da gamba and viola. The same applies to the vocal forces; all the recorded works are performed by an ensemble of soloists. So despite the recording’s lack of generally augmented forces in the tutti, a timbral distinction between the solo parts and tutti is ultimately maintained. In my opinion it is not a matter of performance forces; the solo – tutti distribution is an inherent feature of the work’s very structure, texture and formal procedures. Hence while retaining, in my opinion, the most essential elements of Gorczycki’s style, this recording does not represent a historical reconstruction of individual works, or moreover liturgy. The addition after Missa Rorate of the first version of Ecce Dominus veniet attributed to Gorczycki and contained in the 1967 edition of the Mass (Early Polish Music, vol. 65, Kraków, PWM Edition) carries no liturgical connotations. In my opinion however it serves to give musical closure to the Mass, based by Gorczycki on melodies of several church songs, which today are almost obsolete. On the other hand Ecce Dominus veniet (Behold, the Lord shall come, and all his saints with him) continues to be a popular Advent song sung in Polish churches at the end of the Mass. He regularly conducts the Choir and Symphony Orchestra of Wrocław Philharmonic as well as Wrocław Baroque Orchestra. In recent years performances included Handel’s Messiah and both Passions by J.S. Bach (thanks to Andrzej Kosendiak performing these works during the Holy Week has already become a tradition in Wrocław). Andrzej Kosendiak has conceived and manages the recording project of Witold Lutosławski’s complete works (so far three CDs have been released) and a series of CD releases entitled ‘1000 Years of Music in Wrocław’, a project meant to record the city’s musical heritage. His recordings include thitherto unknown music from the collection of Wrocław University Library: Musica da Chiesa (DUX), Strassbourg Library: F.X. Richter’s Missa Pastorale, Dixit, Magnificat (CYPRES) and A. Bononcini’s Stabat Mater (DUX). It has been Andrzej Kosendiak’s idea to create a series of world-class recordings (under the auspices of Paul McCreesh) encompassing the most important oratorio works and featuring Wrocław ensembles and Gabrieli Consort & Players. A few years ago Andrzej Kosendiak put forward the idea of building The National Forum of Music and is now the coordinator of its construction. G.G. GORCZYCKI 57 ILLUXIT SOL Illuxit sol iustitiae et flores apparuerunt in terra nostra. In vita patientia, inconcussa fortitudo intemerata perseverantia. Immobilis constantia, immobilis martyris constantia. Dum igne amoris divini succensus proclamat: Quis? Quis me separabit a charitate Christi? Quis tribulatio angustia an fames, an nuditas persecutio an gladius. Veniant cruces, veniant flagra, veniant ignes, veniant ferae quaecunque, veniant tormenta, veniant alia tormenta. 58 G.G. GORCZYCKI Zajaśniało słońce sprawiedliwości na ziemi i zakwitły kwiaty cnót: cierpliwości, męstwa, nieustraszonej stałości i wiary niewzruszonej męczennika, gdyż w żarliwości swego serca woła: Cóż mnie oderwie od miłości Chrystusowej? Czy głód i męka, czy nędza i prześladowanie? Przyjmę na się krzyże, niech mnie ogarną płomienie, niech mnie rozszarpią dzikie bestie, niech przyjdą najsroższe męki i udręczenia – oczyszczą one duszę moją, a nie oderwą mnie od miłości Chrystusowej. Słodko jest cierpieć i umrzeć dla Chrystusa. Nagroda Jego jest wielka. (Wydawnictwo Dawnej Muzyki Polskiej, t. 14, 1963) The sun of justice has lightened up the earth, and the flowers of virtue have come into bloom: the patience, fortitude, perseverance, intrepid constancy of the martyr. In the fire of divine love, he cries: What can separate me from Christ’s love? What hunger or tribulation, misery or persecution? Come Cross, come the flames, let wild beast tear me apart, let all torments come unto me – they will purify me, will not separate me for eternity. Sweet it is to suffer and die for Christ, for His reward is great. (English translation by Tomasz Zymer) G.G. GORCZYCKI 59 LAETATUS SUM Laetatus sum in his, quae dicta sunt mihi: In domum Domini ibimus. Stantes erant pedes nostri, in atriis tuis, Jerusalem. Amen. (Psalm 122) 60 G.G. GORCZYCKI Rad to słyszę, że dom Pański nawiedzić mamy I ujźrzem, o Jeruzalem, twe piękne bramy; Jeruzalem, wzór miast zacnych, ozdoba świata, Zgodą mieszczan swych spojona na wieczne lata. Tam ku służbie Pańskiej, jako zakon skazuje, Naród żydowski ze wszytkich krain wstępuje; Tam prawo, tam jest zasadzon pałac sądowy, Tam stolica i on zacny tron Dawidowy. Niechże w tobie, piękne miasto, pokój przebywa, Którego niech twój przyjaciel z tobą używa; Pokój w twardych basztach twoich niechaj się mnoży, A obfitość swe w pałacach gniazdo założy. Prze bracią ze wszech namilszą, prze krewne moje Wiecznie się ja starać muszę o dobre twoje: Prze dom Pański świętobliwy, na twe pożytki Gotówem zdrowie swe ważyć i siły wszytki. (Jan Kochanowski, Psałterz Dawidów, 1579) G.G. GORCZYCKI 61 62 G.G. GORCZYCKI I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord. Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together: Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, Unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the Lord. For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces. For my brethren and companions’ sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee. Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek thy good. (The Authorized King James Version of the Bible, 1611) G.G. GORCZYCKI 63 COMPLETORIUM Cum invocarem exaudivit me Deus iustitiae meae, In tribulatione dilatasti mihi. Multi dicunt: Quis ostendit nobis bona? Signatum est super nos lumen vultus tui, Domine: Dedisti laetitiam in corde meo. A fructu frumenti, vini, et olei sui, multiplicanti sunt. In pace in idipsum dormiam, et requiescam; Quoniam tu, Domine, singulariter in spe constituisti me. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen (Psalm 4) 64 G.G. GORCZYCKI Wzywam Cię, Boże, świadku mojej niewinności, Któryś mię zwykł wywodzić zawżdy z mych trudności; Chciej się teraz nade mną troskliwym zmiłować, I moje smutne prośby łaskawie przyjmować. Radzę tedy, żebyście przed oczyma mieli Pańską bojaźń, a gniewać więcej go nie chcieli; Co noc, to rozbierajcie dnia przeszłego sprawy: Tom przystojnie uczynił, tum Bogu nieprawy. GORCZYCKI 65 66 G.G. GORCZYCKI Na mię pojźrzeć grzesznego: to są osiadłości, To skarby, to pociechy i moje radości. Inszy niechaj spichlerze nawiezione mają, Niechaj wszytkie piwnice winem zastawiają; Ja w nadzieję łaski Twej będę spał bezpiecznie, Bo mię Ty sam, Panie mój, opatrujesz wiecznie. (Jan Kochanowski, Psałterz Dawidów, 1579) Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah. But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him. Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord. There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. (The Authorized King James Version of the Bible, 1611) G.G. GORCZYCKI 67 In Te, Domine, speravi; non confundar in aeternum; in iustitiae tua libera me. Inclina ad me aurem tuam; accelera ut eruas me. Esto mihi in Deum protectorem, et in domum refugii ut salvum me facias; quoniam fortitudo mea et refugium meum es tu; et propter nomen tuum, deduces me et enutries me. In manus tuas, commendo spiritum meum: redemisti me, Domine, Deus veritatis. Gloria Patri... (Psalm 31) 68 G.G. GORCZYCKI W Tobie ufność swą kładę, Boże niezmierzony, A Ty nie daj, abych był kiedy zawstydzony! Prze dobroć swoję racz mię z trudności wybawić, Usłysz mój głos, a chciej mię na swobodzie stawić. Weźmi mię w swą obronę, niezwalczony Panie. A to za twardą skałę i zamek mi stanie. Tyś mój wał, Tyś mój zamek; a prze Imię swoje Prowadź mię i opatruj liche zdrowie moje! (Jan Kochanowski, Psałterz Dawidów, 1579) In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me. For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me. Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength. Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth. (The Authorized King James Version of the Bible, 1611) G.G. GORCZYCKI 69 Qui habitat in adiutorio Altissimi, in protectione Dei caeli commorabitur. Dicet Domino: susceptor meus es tu, et refugium meum; Deus meus, sperabo in eum. Quoniam ipse liberavit me laqueo venantium, et a verbo aspero. Quoaniam tu es, Domine, spes mea: Altissimum possuisti refugium tuum. Ciebie on z łowczych obierzy wyzuje I w zaraźliwym powietrzu ratuje; W cieniu swych skrzydeł zachowa cię wiecznie, Pod Jego pióry ulężesz bezpiecznie. Stateczność Jego tarcz i puklerz mocny, Za którym stojąc na żaden strach nocny, Na żadną trwogę ani dbaj na strzały, Którymi sieje przygoda w dzień biały. Stąd wedla ciebie tysiąc głów polęże, Stąd drugi tysiąc, ciebie nie dosięże Miecz nieuchronny, a ty przedsię swymi Oczyma ujźrzysz pomstę nad grzesznymi. Iżeś rzekł Panu: „Tyś nadzieja moja”, Iż Bóg nawysszy jest ucieczka twoja – Nie dostąpi cię żadna zła przygoda Ani się najdzie w domu twoim szkoda. Aniołom swoim każe cię pilnować, Gdziekolwiek stąpniesz, którzy cię piastować Na ręku będą, abyś idąc drogą Na ostry krzemień nie ugodził nogą. Będziesz po żmijach bezpiecznie gniewliwych He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; G.G. GORCZYCKI 71 no forte offendas ad lapidem pedem tuum. Super aspidem et basiliscum ambulabis, et conculcabis leonem et draconem. Quoniam in me speravit, liberabo eum: protegam eum, quoniam cognovit nomen meum. (Jan Kochanowski, Psałterz Dawidów, 1579) There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation. (The Authorized King James Version of the Bible, 1611) G.G. Amen. 74 G.G. GORCZYCKI Teraz, o wierni Pańscy służebnicy, Którzy trzymacie straż w Jego bożnicy, Teraz, jako to noc milczy, wiecznemu Chwałę oddajcie winną Bogu swemu! Ręce ku jego mieszkaniu ściągajcie, A winną chwałę Jemu oddawajcie, A Pan wam także będzie błogosławił, Ten, który niebo i ziemię postawił. (Jan Kochanowski, Psałterz Dawidów, 1579) Behold, bless ye the Lord, all ye servants of the Lord, which by night stand in the house of the Lord. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord. The Lord that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion. (The Authorized King James Version of the Bible, 1611) Nim kres nadejdzie jasności, Błagamy, Stwórco wszechświata, Byś nas otaczał opieką I chronił w swojej dobroci. O spraw to, Ojcze najlepszy, Przez Syna Twego, Chrystusa, Co z Tobą w Ducha Jedności Króluje w blasku na wieki. Amen. (Liturgia godzin, 1991) To thee, before the close of the day, Creator of the world, we pray That with Thy wonted favour, Thou Wouldst be our Guard and Keeper now. O Father, that we ask be done Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son; Who, with the Holy Ghost and Thee, shall live and reign eternally. Amen. (The Roman Breviary, translation by J.M. Neale, 1818–1866) G.G. GORCZYCKI 75 In manus tuas, Domine, commendo spiritum meum. Redemisti nos, Domine, Deus veritatis, Gloria Patri… Nunc dimittis servum tuum Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace; quia viderunt occuli mei salutare tuum: quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum; lumen ad revelationem gentium, et gloriam plebs tue Israel. Gloria Patri… 76 G.G. GORCZYCKI W ręce Twoje, Panie, powierzam ducha mojego. Ty nas odkupiłeś, Panie, Boże wierny. (Responsorium krótkie, Liturgia godzin, 1991) Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit. You have redeemed us, Lord God of truth. (Short Responsory, The Roman Breviary, 1961) Teraz puszczasz sługę twego, Panie! w pokoju według słowa Twego. Gdyż oczy moje oglądały zbawienie Twoje. Któreś zgotował przed oblicznością wszystkich narodów: Światłość na objawienie poganów i chwałę ludu Twego Izraelskiego. (Łk 2, 29-32, Biblia w przekładzie Jakuba Wujka, 1599) Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation. Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people. A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. (Luke 2:29-20, The Authorized King James Version of the Bible, 1611) G.G.
