Omnivores or Localvores?* By Drake Bennett It’s the ethical eater’s ”Localvore Challenge” time again in the USA. The actual dates of the challenge vary from town to town, but the idea is that, for a single meal, or an entire week, participants will eat only food that was grown within 100 miles of where they live. In recent years, as large companies with globe-straddling supply networks have come to dominate the food market, ”local” has emerged as the new motto for a conscientious consumer and localvores are a constantly growing movement. The arguments for local food are multiple. It tastes better and it supports small-scale economies and communities in the face of globalization. 7.1._____. And at a time of rising concern about climate change, the great distances that most of our food travels are a worrying factor in the greenhouse gases production as well as a symbol of wastefulness. For local-food activists, ”food miles” have become a measure of environmental impact. The activists in Western Europe have pushed to put the term on menus and grocery-store labels. 7.2._____. The Swedish government has announced plans to affix products with ”carbon labels” that announce just how much carbon was emitted in production and distribution. In the US, Bon Appetite Management Company, plans to introduce a similar measure. The typical item of food on an American’s plate travels some fifteen hundred miles to get there. But increasing evidence suggests that actually local food sometimes consumes more energy and produces more greenhouse gases. 7.3._____. A head of lettuce grown in Vermont may have less of an energy impact than one shipped in from Chile. But grow that Vermont lettuce late in the season in a heated greenhouse, and the situation is just the opposite. So while local food may have its benefits, they don’t necessarily include climate change prevention. A new research was launched in order to understand how the complex food production system affects the environment. 7.4._____. The researchers applaud the public interest in food and its environmental impact, but according to them ”local” is not the best way for making ecofriendly food-buying decisions. The key, they argue, is to find a way to label foods providing eco-information. 7.5._____. Even if it turned out that an imported bunch of tomatoes were more environmentally friendly than a local one, they say they’d still go with local. ”There’s the taste,” they say, ”and you’re supporting local farmers.” ADAPTED FROM WWW.BOSTON.COM * omnivores – species that eat both plant and meat foods; localvores – humorous term for those who only eat foods produced locally Rozumienie tekstu czytanego i rozpoznawanie struktur leksykalno-gramatycznych Zadanie 7.
