Tradycje lotnicze Gminy Zaleszany Aerial traditions of the Zaleszany Municipality Flugtraditionen in der Gemeinde Zaleszany Propaganda Sp. z o.o. Andrzej Karaś Wójt Gminy Zaleszany Sehr geehrter Leser Dear Reader, Turbia Airport and everything that is connected with it, are undeniably important attributes of the history, present, and, I am convinced, that the future of the Zaleszany Municipality . The decision to build the airport in Turbia for the Air Force was already made in the thirties of the twentieth century in connection with the establishment of the Central Industrial District. The airport was built by the German occupants preparing for an armed invasion on the Soviet Union. After the military defeat the retreating German troops blew up buildings and airport runway. The Soviet Army made only makeshift adaptation of the airport for the needs of bombing the battle positions of German troops. Due to the enormity of the war devastation of the airport it has never revived in its original form with a concrete runway. Today, the Aero Club is hosting the airport , which was planned to be appoint in the spring of 1939. The outbreak of war, however, prevented the implementation of this plan. After the war, after many attempts undertaken, futile due to the lack of resources to build the necessary technical infrastructure, on 19 January 1957, Stalowa Wola Steelworks Aero Club was formed. From this day the history of business Aero Club in Stalowa Wola is dated. The result of over 50 years of activity of Aero Club is currently existing technical infrastructure of the airport and, most of all, a great number of trained adepts - glider pilots, paratroopers, ballooning, hanggliders and model – popularizing Polish aviation throughout the world. Das Ergebnis der über 50-jährigen Arbeit des Aeroklubs sind die aktuell existierende technische Infrastruktur des Flughafens und vor allem die große Anzahl der ausgebildeten Absolventen – Segelflugpiloten, Geographical airport and convenient thermal conditions make the Turbia airport a place to organize many of national and international airplane, glider, balloon and flying models events, which are a great attraction for residents of the municipality and surrounding areas and tourists. We give the reader an outlinethat presents the history of aviation in the village Turbia and the Aero Club in Stalowa Wola and presents profiles of activists and aviation enthusiasts related to the Turbia airport and Aero Club in Stalowa Wola. Tourists and residents of the municipality and the surrounding area are invited to visit the “Air traditions chamber ” at the airport and to participate in events organized at the airport. Wieżę oddano do użytku 7 września 1952 roku. Powołano sekcje modelarską, spadochronową, szybowcową i samolotową. Niemcy, bazując częściowo na zdobytych, przedwojennych planach budowy lotniska zapasowego, zbudowali w Turbi lotnisko dla potrzeb Luftwaffe, posiadające The beginnings of aviation tradition in the Zaleszany municipality – Turbia airport w roku 1944 betonowy pas startowy, stację paliw i komplet stałych zabudowań lotniskowych. W rok później utworzono modelarnię lotniczą, której pierwszym instruktorem był Bolesław In what is now south-eastern Poland extends an area where in the years 1936-1939 the largest economic project of the Second Republic was built - Central Industrial District. The purpose of the CID was to increase the economic potential of Poland, the expansion of heavy industry and defence, as well as reduce unemployment caused by the effects of the Great Depression. The construction of the CID was initiated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Treasury, Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski, who started the business in a difficult period, when the crisis has just ended, unemployment in cities was increasing and in rural areas the situation was still very difficult. One of the most important investments in the CID was the construction of the Southern Works, which is today Stalowa Wola Steelworks. The authorities decided, that construction of an airport in the centre area of the Central Industrial 11 Początki lotniczych tradycji w gminie Zaleszany – lotnisko Turbia | The beginnings of aviation tradition in the Zaleszany municipality - Turbia airport | Anfänge der Flugtraditionen in der Gemeinde Zaleszany – Flughafen Turbia 12 District will be necessary for the proper economic development of these areas, as well as for their defence. The choice fell on the estates of Prince Lubomirski, in particular rural areas of Turbia and there one of the most important pre-war Polish airports was to be located. At the same time in spring of 1939 the Polish Aero Club promised to help the local Organising Committee in establishing the local Aero Club and the allocation of two RWD-8 planes. Unfortunately, the war prevented the implementation of these plans. Germany, basing in part on pre-war plans of secondary airport in 1944 build airport in Turbia for the Luftwaffe with concrete runway, a petrol station and a set of permanent airport buildings. It was supposed to be the aerodrome prepared primarily for the German attack on the Soviet Union. After the withdrawal of German troops the airport was used the Russians, but the war caused severe destruction that have never been fully removed. The first organizational meeting of the Aero Club was held on 18 January 1957, and its first president was Zdzisław Sikorski. Modelling, parachute, glider and airplanes sections were created. 22 September 1957 formally put into operation a hangar at the airport in Turbia. September 1952 in Betrieb genommen. He was the founder of the aviation modelling workshop in Tarnobrzeg. He organized an annual “Festival of the kite.” In 1966, he won the Polish Championship in the class of motor models and cup for the best modeler. In August 1998 at the airport in Turbia Roman Straburzyński modelling competed in the Modelling World Cup. He was sixth on dozens of contestants. Początki lotniczych tradycji w gminie Zaleszany – lotnisko Turbia | The beginnings of aviation tradition in the Zaleszany municipality - Turbia airport | Anfänge der Flugtraditionen in der Gemeinde Zaleszany – Flughafen Turbia 26 Edward Paterek Edward Paterek Urodził się w 1944 r. w Agatówce, czyli we wsi, z której niemal widać lotnisko w Turbi. Edward Paterek Born in 1944 in Agatówka, in the village, from which one can almost see the Turbia Airport. He befriended aviation in 1957, when the newly formed Stalowa Wola Aero Club opened a Modelling Section and there under the supervision of Zbigniew Nowakowski he began to develop his passion for aviation. Then he engaged in parachute sports and remained loyal to this area for longer. After training in ASW he joined, within the military service , the landing troops in Krakow. Military service ended in 1965, he returned home, and regardless of continuing his parachute passion he began pilot training, which he completed with obtaining the I Class pilot permission. Edward Paterek as extremely restless soul, did not stop with existing interests and in 1986 he was trained to pilot a hot air balloon. Another skill was to obtain a permission to fly trike, which resulted in the Aero Club purchasing two ultralight trikes and master Paterek taught to fly next generations of enthusiasts. Apart from his aviation passions, Edward Paterek had his feet firmly on the ground: he graduated from the University of Rzeszów with the title of engineer, and build self-powered gliders and ultralight aircraft. In the years 1999 - 2005 he was president of the Aero Club of Stalowa Wola, and is now its Honorary President. 27 28 Początki lotniczych tradycji w gminie Zaleszany – lotnisko Turbia | The beginnings of aviation tradition in the Zaleszany municipality - Turbia airport | Anfänge der Flugtraditionen in der Gemeinde Zaleszany – Flughafen Turbia 29 Początki lotniczych tradycji w gminie Zaleszany – lotnisko Turbia | The beginnings of aviation tradition in the Zaleszany municipality - Turbia airport | Anfänge der Flugtraditionen in der Gemeinde Zaleszany – Flughafen Turbia 30 Stanisław Kluk Stanisław Kluk To najsłynniejszy z turebskich pilotów, w latach 1957–1977 związany z Aeroklubem Stalowowolskim. 33 Początki lotniczych tradycji w gminie Zaleszany – lotnisko Turbia | The beginnings of aviation tradition in the Zaleszany municipality - Turbia airport | Anfänge der Flugtraditionen in der Gemeinde Zaleszany – Flughafen Turbia 34 From the Zaleszany municipality also come heroic Polish pilots: Sergeant Edward Paterek Born in Obojnia, he became famous as the pilot of the RAF squadrons participating with 302 and 303 in the Battle of Britain. He died in 1941 while flying over the Irish Sea flying as a sea convoy guard. Sec. Michał Latawiec Born in Majdan Zbydniowski, also distinguished as an outstanding pilot during World War II. In September 1939, his plane was shot down near the city of Lviv. He survived the cruel repression by the NKVD, was sent to a camp in Starobielsk, Siberia. In 1941, together with army of Sikorski created in the Soviet Union he went to England, where he could again become a pilot. He flew combat fighters in 305 Mosquito Squadron and during one of the flights over the continent his plane was shot down over France. He was buried in France, but his symbolic grave is in the family tomb in Zaleszany, back at home, where he was destined to never come back to. Hometown honoured him, naming one of the streets Stalowa Wola with his name. Zaleszany Municipality with its Turbia airport boasts many famous people, whomade up the history of the land, who came from Zaleszany, Turbia or Zbydniów, making famous their his homeland at airports across Poland, winning laurels in sports aircraft, gliding, sport or balloon modelling. Jednocześnie samoloty te służyły pilotom Aeroklubu do szkolenia, treningów bu PRL pierwsze szybowce ABC, Żuraw, Komar, Sroka, Salamandra i Mucha 100. Rozpoczęto praktyczne szkolenie szybowcowe, a pierwsze srebrne odznaki szybowcowe zdobyli: Alfred Bakalan, Stanisław Kluk, Lesław Jarosz i Zbigniew Flasza. W roku następnym rozpoczyna się na samolotach CSS-13 szkolenie samolotowe, a pierwsi przeszkoleni piloci to: Władysław Kółeczko, Aleksander Podraza i Lesław Jarosz. W tym czasie Huta Stalowa Wola kupuje dla ASW szybowiec Bocian, natomiast Elektrownia Stalowa Wola Muchę 100. W pięciolecie istnienia, w roku 1963 ASW organizuje pierwszą imprezę sportową na poziomie ogólnopolskim IV Mistrzostwa Polski w akrobacji samolotowej. Zaczynają się znaczące sukcesy pilotów z lotniska w Turbi. W roku 1964 Stanisław Kluk z pasażerem na szybowcu Bocian ustanawia na trasie trójkąta 100 km rekord świata, uzyskując prędkość 107,8 km/h. Piloci szybowcowi zdobywają złote odznaki i diamenty za przelot 500 km. Stanisław Kluk wygrywa zawody w Czechosłowacji, Memoriał Bittnera, zostaje wicemistrzem Polski. Następne lata to intensywna praca szkoleniowa wszystkich sekcji, a największe osiągnięcia uzyskują szybownicy. W 1971 roku zakupiono czteromiejscowy samolot PZL-104 Wilga 35A, a w 1973 roku ówczesny Związek Radziecki sprzedał Polsce kilkadziesiąt samolotów produkcji czechosłowackiej Let L-200 Morava, użytkowanych na Ukrainie. W kwietniu 2012 roku Aeroklub Polski przekazał aktem notarialnym lotnisko w Turbi Aeroklubowi Stalowa Wola. | The winged municipality: Zaleszany | Die beflügelte Gemeinde: Zaleszany trained pilots are: Władysław Kółeczko, Aleksander Podraza and Lesław Jarosz. During this time Stalowa Wola buys Bocian glider for ASW . In five years of existence, in 1963 ASW organizes the first sporting event on the national level – the IV Polish championship in acrobatics. Significant successes of pilots from Turbia start. In 1964, Stanisław Kluk with a passenger in the Bocian glider sets world record on 100 km triangle routeat a speed of 107.8 km/h. Glider pilots earn gold medals and diamonds for flying 500 km. Stanisław Kluk won competitions in Czechoslovakia, Bittner Memorial, is Polish runner-up. Next year brings intensive trainings in all sections, and the gliders earn the greatest achievement . Stanisław Kluk wins many national as well as international competitions. Henryk Poźniak follows his footsteps: first wins Polish Junior Championships, then wins the senior category. ASW pilots compete in the World Gliding Championships in Yugoslavia, where Stanisław Kluk is the second runner-up. Pozniak starts in Finland, then both in Australia. At the airport in Turbia a construction of the new airport begun, which was opened in 1972. The Aero Club owns more new aircrafts and gliders. There are new Wilga, Jantar. Club airplane, glider and parachute competitions are organized. In 1977, the construction of new hangars and access road began. For lifetime achievement the Aero Club receives that year the prestigious “Cumulus Heaven” award from “Skrzydlata Polska” magazine, and Stanisław Kluk wins individually the “Golden Cumulus”. In 1982, in the Polish championship start four representatives of ASW, including Stanisław Kluk in open class and Henryk Poźniak in the standard class. Other ASW pilots obtain very good results on gliders Tomasz Krok, Robert Krok, Zbigniew Walas on aircrafts Andrzej Kościelniak, Zbigniew Chudy, Jarosław Stan. In May 1987, Stalowa Wola Aero Club organized the XII Polish Gliding Championships in the open class, in the same year it gained an An-2 plane. Aircraft Pilots take part in many contests, achieving considerable success. For lifetime achievements ASW is again honored with “Cumulus Heaven”. Since 1990, the activities of aero clubs, including the one in Stalowa Wola ceased to be subsidized by the central government. Despite many The winged municipality: Zaleszany problems, and perhaps in spite of them, STW Aero Club organizes another Polish Gliding Championship in the open class. Over the years, NAC has trained hundreds of pilots, parachutists, modellers. Lying near the municipality of Stalowa Wola Zaleszany is hosting the only one the airport in the area of Turbia. Since the beginning of functioning of this airport its second major host and the user is the Aero Club of Stalowa Wola. An important element of the functioning of the Aero Club of Stalowa Wola was close cooperation with then the biggest industrial plant in Podkarpacie - Stalowa Wola Steelworks. The most important element of this cooperation were the aircraft used by the Steelworks to fly business trips throughout the country. At the same time these aircrafts were used to train pilots of the Aero Club or perform necessary tasks of Aero Club was not a power, particularly in the early pioneering years, in aircraft sports. This resulted from the fact that it is a very expensive their own. The first machine available at Stalowa Wola Steelworks was a four-seater twin-engine Aero Ae-Let 45S, obtained from medical avia- sport and the only clubs with wealthy patrons could afford to purchase airplanes, gliders, constructing a repair base, hangars or hiring profes- tion in 1978, out of service and canceled in the mid-80s. In 1971 the four-seater aircraft PZL-104 Wilga 35A was purchased, in 1973 the then sional instructors or mechanics. The strength of ASW (and the likes) were, however, people for whom hovering from the ground and work on Soviet Union has sold Poland dozens of Czechoslovakian Let L-200 Morava aircrafts, used in Ukraine. This outstanding, as at that time, high class airplanes was primarily a passion, elemental, which they devoted themselves completely, not caring about the material side of their hobby. equipment went to medical aviation (several aircrafts are still used today), a few pieces to large industrial plants, including one for SWS. The origins of the aircraft sports at the airport in Turbia date back to 1958, when the NAC receives from the Board of the Aero Club of PRL first ABC, Żuraw, Komar, Sroka, Salamandra and Mucha 100 gliders. Practical glider trainings began, and the first silver badge glider won: Alfred Bakalan, Stanisław Kluk, Lesław Jarosz and Zbigniew Flasza. The next year aircraft training on airplanes CSS-13 starts , and the first In 1983, HSW purchased another Wilga 35A, which flew until 1998, and today is in the Aero Club’s hangar. In 1984, SWS purchased a disposable PZL M-20 Mewa aircraft. Roman Straburzyński to zmarły w 2002 roku w wieku 82 lat modelarz, związany z Tarnobrzegiem i Aeroklubem Stalowa Wola. The first step towards aviation: Modelling Before the young man becomes a pilot and fulfils their dreams, often the first contact with the subject of air is the modelling. This hobby, developed from childhood, for many well-known masters of aviation sports was the first contact with the issues related to the construction of the aircraft, its parameters, mechanics, engine and air frame structure. Pierwsi przez niego wyszkoleni w Turbi piloci balonowi to: Tomasz Walawski, Waldemar Lekan i Katarzyna Walawska. Sekcja balonowa w Aeroklubie Stalowa Wola powstała w 1984 roku dzięki staraniom Witolda Walawskiego, znanego stalowowolskiego lekarza i jednocześnie pilota szybowcowego w miejscowym Aeroklubie. Nasi piloci wielokrotnie startowali w zawodach w Aosta, we Włoszech, w zawodach Grand Prix w Hiszpanii (Sewilla, Madryt, Barcelona). Stalowowolska załoga Waldemar Lekan i Witold Walawski na balonie Huta Stalowa Wola brała udział w uroczystości otwarcia Zimowych Igrzysk w Calgary w 1988 roku. 27 września 2008 roku na placu Piłsudskiego przed Miejskim Domem Kultury odbyła się pierwsza prezentacja balonu, | Balon “Huta Stalowa a następnego dnia podczas imprezy „Piknik Industrialny” – jako nowa wizytówka miasta – wzbudził wielkie zainteresowanie mieszkańców Wola” dał początek sekcji i przybyłych gości. balonowej Aeroklubu | Balloon “Huta Stalowa Wola” gave rise to the Balloon Section of the Balloons over Turbia, colour frenzy Aero Club | Der Ballon „Huta Balloon section in Stalowa Wola Aero Club was founded in 1984 thanks to the efforts of Witold Walawski, well-known doctor from Stalowa Stalowa Wola“ gab Wola and at the same time glider pilot at the local Aero Club. The first balloon pilots trained by him in Turbia are: Tomasz Walawski, Waldemar Lekan and Katarzyna Walawska. Ballooning is a very spectacular field of aviation sports and always meets with great interest of the audience in Stalowa Wola area. Therefore, the Aero Club has often initiated demonstrations balloon flights in Tarnobrzeg, Sandomierz and other towns, because for the pilots it was schon im Mai 1986 das erste Ballontreffen am Flughafen in Turbia organisiert. Our pilots repeatedly competed in competitions in Aosta, Italy, the Grand Prix in Spain (Seville, Madrid, Barcelona). Waldemar Lekan and Witold Walawski in the Stalowa Wola Steelworks balloon participated in the opening ceremony of the Winter Games in Calgary in 1988. Waldemar Lekan competed in six competitions in Naples, winning them four times. Based on the unwavering popularity of balloon shows, Aero Club organizes every year in Stalowa Wola (and at the airport in Turbia) great balloon rally called “Balloon Indian Summer”. For several years in the balloon event participates “Stalowa Wola” balloon funded by the City to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Stalowa Wola, which with beautiful colours and its majestic flight makes the town famous during shows and competitions in the country and around the world. Hot air balloon “Stalowa Wola” with a shell volume of ca 2,600 m3 was made in the Czech Republic. Along with a basket, apparatus, and gas bottles it can carry 4-5 people. On a grey shell background on three sides of the balloon there are city coat of arms, above it the inscription Stalowa Wola and below an inscription Poland. 27 September 2008 at the Pilsudski Square in front of the Municipal House of Culture was the first presentation of the balloon, and the next day during the “Industrial Picnic” event - as the city’s new showcase - aroused great interest of residents and the guests. | 1.
