Finite element model of craniofacial complex and supporting teeth are obtained on the basis of tomographic data. An orthodontic appliance differs by the localization of the screw relative to the palate. The design with location of the rods and screw of device in the same horizontal plane as well as the design with the location of the screw at the 8 mm closer to the palate relative to the horizontal localization are considered. Deformations at the intact skull and a skull with a cleft palate were derived. The regions of the largest deformations of the skull bone structures are defined for different orthodontic device designs. Effect of the orthodontic device design on displacements of the supporting teeth is analyzed. The results can be used to design devices HYRAX for the orthodontic correction and treatment of the cross-bite patients. Keywords: intact skull, palate cleft, HYRAX device, stress-strain state 1. Introduction Cross-bite is the one of the anomalies of the mutual disposition of transversal dentition requiring active treatment. The most distributed cases of cross-bite are dysplasia of the jaw, chewing function decline or chewing on one side, a violation of the jaws, as well as congenital cleft palate. For the treatment of maxillary defects is used expansion of the upper jaw with large transversal forces. For this purpose, various orthodontic designs [3, 9, 10, 21] were used. The maxillary expansion may be associated with a feeling of pressure to different areas of the maxilla, in particular under the eyes and near nasal cavity 1 2 3 Autor do koresondencji/corresponding author: Sergei Bosiakov, Belarusian State University, 4 Nezavisimosti Avenue, 220030 Minsk, Belarus, tel.: (+375) 172095345, e-mail: bosiakov @bsu.by Anastasiya Vinakurava, Rzeszow University of Technology, e-mail: [email protected] Andrei Dosta, Belarusian State Medical University, e-mail: [email protected] 6 S. Bosiakov, A. Vinakurava, A. Dosta [14, 28]. At the same time, an important element of the orthodontic treatment is to ensure maxillary extension without any side and negative effects [24]. A lot of finite element studies were carried out to assess the influence of the rapid maxillary expansion on the bone structures of the craniofacial complex and the supporting teeth in patients with and without cleft palate. Recent obtained results and the history of the development of this problem are described in [1, 11, 12, 15, 16, 19, 20, 25]. Usually, in the works related to the calculation of the stress-strain state of the maxillary complex, the effect of orthodontic appliance is not modeled. The effect of the actual features of orthodontic device on the maxillary expansion was not investigated. The correct direction of forces and their distribution during maxillary expansion is still relevant. The aim of this study is finite element analysis of the bone deformations at the intact skull and skull with cleft palate after activation of the different designs of orthodontic device HYRAX. 2. Materials and methods Stereolithography (STL) model of the skull was obtained with the use of MIMICS 14.12 (Materialise BV, Belgium) on the basis of 210 tomographic images of the dry cadaveric intact skull of adult man. Step of tomographic slices is 1 mm. A similar approach was used in [5, 8, 11, 15] during development of three-dimensional solid model of the maxillary complex. The first and second premolars of the maxilla and the first permanent molars were removed in a process of generating STL-model. The finite element model is obtained after processing STL-model in 3-matic 6.1 MIMICS. The finite element model contains of 26 445 nodes and 91 731 elements like Solid72. Finite element discretization was performed automatically. Simulation of the periodontal ligament was not carried out, because it has little effect on the stress distribution in the bone structures of the craniofacial complex during maxillary expansion [27]. Maxillary sutures are also not taken into account in the finite element model, because the sutures in skull of an adult human the partially or fully ossified and have a small thickness [1]. Solid models premolars and first molars were obtained on the basis of tomographic data of the human skull in SolidWorks 2010 (SolidWorks Corporation, USA). The SolidWorks graphics primitives were used for modeling orthodontic device HYRAX. Crowns were installed on the first premolars and molars. The rods were attached to plates which can be moved apart in a horizontal plane by rotation of the screw. The length and width of the plates are 10 mm and 4 mm respectively. The radius of the rod cross-section is equal to 1 mm, thickness is 0.2 mm. Finite element models of the orthodontic device, premolars and molars are derived by use Mechanical Model ANSYS Workbench 13. Total number of elements is 13 320 and total number of nodes is 26 375. The maximum size of the element of orthodontic device model is 1 mm. Contacts between the crowns Deformations at the craniofacial complex depending... 7 of orthodontic device and teeth, as well as skull and the teeth was assigned via contact elements CONTA173, CONTA174 and TARGE170 (without sliding and penetration). The boundary conditions for the skull correspond to rigid fixing of the foramen magnum nodes [11, 16, 20]. Finite element model of maxillary complex orthodontic appliances and boundary conditions are shown in fig. 1. Displacement of each plate along x-axis is u = 0.4 mm (corresponding to the activation of half-turned screws) [3, 6, 18, 22, 26]. The elastic properties of the tissues of the skull and dental orthodontic device material are indicated in tab. 1. a) b) Fig. 1. At the first design of orthodontic device the screw and rods are disposed in the same horizontal plane (model A). In the second design the screw was located on 8 mm closer to the palate with respect to the above horizontal plane (model B). The rods length for the models A and B changes from 8.15 mm to 12.20 mm and from 11.05 to 16.45 mm, respectively. 8 S. Bosiakov, A. Vinakurava, A. Dosta 3. Results and discussion Deformations of the intact craniofacial complex without cleft palate (fig. 2.) shows that the direction of displacement changes significantly with the movement of screw of orthodontic device to the palate. For model A the deformations has a positive direction along the z-axis. For model B the total deformations (including the z-axis components) directed along the negative direction of this axis. Skull in this case is rotated forward and downward. This fact is consistent with the results of research [17]. a) b) Fig. 2. Total deformations of intact skull (frontal view): a) model A, b) model B The highest and lowest displacements of the maxillary bone structures along the coordinate axes are given in tab. 2. – it can be seen that the design of the device significantly affects the displacements in the bones of the skull. Transversal deformations of the maxilla decreased more than 2 times on the left side of the skull and more than 6 times on the right side for model B in comparison model A. Largest deformations for the maxilla left side are 0.37u (fig. 2a) and 0.12u (fig. 2b), and for right side are 0.55u (fig. 2a) and 0.08u (fig. 2b). Some bone structures on the left side of the skull (the individual regions of the maxilla, zygomatic bone) displace to the right. This fact can be explained by the asymmetry of the craniofacial complex, as well as the asymmetrical fixing of crowns on the supporting teeth and rods on the crowns. For model A, maxilla near the front incisors slightly moves back along the y-axis in the sagittal plane. The greatest displacement in this direction is equal to 0.175u. The maxilla segment near molars and some other bones of the skull, including the zygomatic bone, move forward. In this direction the largest displacement is equal to 0.073u. Maxillary segment near front incisors and nasal cavity slightly move down (along the z-axis), the other bone structures of the skull are moved upwards. For model B, skull bone above the horizontal plane passing through the nasal crest Deformations at the craniofacial complex depending... 9 moves forward; segment of the maxilla, located below of this plane moves backward. The anterior regions of the skull (maxilla, nasal, frontal and zygomatic bones) are moved down in the vertical direction; parietal and occipital region of the skull are rises. Thus, the skull is rotated in the sagittal plane and the center of rotation lies in the region of the nasal cavity. This corresponds to the results of experimental work [2] about determination of the skull center of resistance and the skull center of rotation during the maxillary expansion. Table 2. This caused by that increase in the size of the arc of the upper dentition is achieved in part by inclined rotational tooth movement. Incorrect installation of orthodontic device may be accompanied by dislocation of the supporting teeth and fenestration of cortical bone, root resorption and gingival recession [14]. At the same time, in the finite-element researches of the maxillary expansion the displacements of the supporting teeth are considered simultaneously with the displacements of the maxillary complex [1, 5, 7, 11, 12, 19, 20, 25]. The displacement patterns of the supporting teeth are shown in fig. 3. Figure 3a shows that the movement direction of the maxilla and supporting teeth on the right side is the same. On the right side the first and second premolars are rotated. The centers of rotation of the tooth are located at the apex of the root. The center of rotation of the first and second premolar in a vertical plane parallel to the xz-plane islocated on ≈0.3l and ≈0.27l from the root apex respectively (l is the height of the corresponding tooth). Since displacements in the transverse direction are large enough (from –0,150 mm in apical region till 0.356 mm for the points on the occlusal surface) in this plane dislocation of supporting teeth can occur. In the vertical plane (parallel to yz-plane) all supporting teeth, except the first molar on the left side are rotated. The center of rotation lies in the body of 10 S. Bosiakov, A. Vinakurava, A. Dosta the corresponding tooth. Tooth displacements in this plane are small (maximum displacement of apical region of supporting teeth on the right side is equal to ≈0.027 mm). Taking into account the thickness of the periodontal ligament (≈0.23 mm [20]), it can be concluded that the displacements of teeth in the sagittal plane do not occur. Figure 3b shows that the displacements of the supporting teeth for model B are directed mainly downwards, as well as displacement of all maxillary complex. The magnitudes of transversal displacements of teeth approximately coincide with the displacements of the alveolar region of the maxilla. Therefore, we can conclude that the centers of rotation of the abutment teeth and upper jaw halves are located in the nasal cavity. a) b) Fig. 3. Total deformations of supporting teeth in intact skull with orthodontic device (frontal view): a) model A, b) model B Deformations of the maxillary complex with cleft for orthodontic device with two different structures are shown in fig. 4. The highest and lowest displacements along the coordinate axes of the maxillary bone structures of the complex with unilateral cleft palate are given in tab. 3. For the models A (fig. 4a) and B (fig. 4b) of orthodontic appliance the greatest transversal movement on the left side of maxilla are 0.96u and 0.32u, on the right side are 0.94u and 0.25u. These movements are much higher than displacements along the x-axis of the maxilla in the intact skull. Since the cleft palate is on the left side of the skull, the displacements of the maxilla left side are higher than the displacements of the right side for the models A and B patterns of the transversal deformations (along the x-axis) for skull with models A and B are almost identical. At the same time, the magnitude of transversal displacements of the skull with model A is on average at three times higher than the corresponding displacements for skull with model B. Displacements along y-axis for skull with model A have positive values for the anterior incisors region. Displacements of parietal bone have negative values. For model A almost the all maxilla moves slightly back and the parietal bone significantly leans forward. Zygomatic bones have the greatest displacements in the positive direction of the z-axis (up). Region of the maxilla moves slightly down in the vicinity of the cleft. For the model B maxilla evenly moves down. The occipital bone is displaced up. Deformations of the supporting teeth for the skull with a cleft palate (fig. 5.) shows that the dislocation of the supporting teeth is not observed for the models A and B. The centers of rotation of the teeth almost coincide with the centers of rotation of the respective halves of the maxilla for models A and B. 12 a) S. Bosiakov, A. Vinakurava, A. Dosta b) Fig. 5. Conclusions Finite element analysis of the maxillary expansion, based on the application of a load directly from the orthodontic device HYRAX, more accurately simulates the action of orthodontic forces and the behavior of the skull. Such approach allows explaining the clinically observed effects [4, 11, 13, 16, 20, 25]. Computations of the maxilla bone structures deformations showed that the design of orthodontic device HYRAX with the location of the screw in the same horizontal plane with rods and design with the location of the screws near palate are not optimal. In the first case there is substantial upward displacement of the side portions of the upper jaw, the upper jaw halves rotate with rotation center in the horizontal plane as well as a substantial rotational displacement the supporting teeth. The main advantage of the horizontal orthodontic design is significant transversal movement of the maxilla for the intact skull and for the skull with a cleft palate. Transversal deformations of the maxillofacial complex are significantly reduced, if the screw orthodontic appliance is located near the palate. At the same time, deformations of the maxillary complex and supporting teeth repeatedly increase in the sagittal plane, and cause the rotation of the cranium forwardly and downwardly in the plane. The occurrence of undesirable displacements of the craniofacial complex in the sagittal plane indicates the need to predict the optimal location of the device screw relative to the palate. It also seems advisable resizing device plates to prevent rotation of the maxilla in a horizontal plane. Asymmetry of transversal displacements for the intact skull and skull with palate cleft indicates the importance of correct fixing rods device on the crown, both in height and circuit of the crown. Deformations at the craniofacial complex depending... 13 Acknowledgement The research leading to these results has received funding from the People Programme (Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange) of the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007-2013/ under REA grant agreement No. PIRSES-GA-2013-610547. Thanks to its small dimensions, being easy to use and able to cooperate with programs such as Matlab, the recorder proves to be an universal and indispensable tool when examining devices in which the essential communication between elements is based on the CAN bus. The example of such a device is UAV platform. The article also provides a short description of the CAN bus and CANaerospace protocol. Keywords: data recorder, CAN, CANaerospace, UAV 1. Introduction The process of controlling the current UAV platform requires installing several detectors on its board. These detectors are often built as ready, independently working measurement modules in different parts of a flying device due to the character of measuring tasks being performed. The central unit, acting as an autopilot, may collect data from measuring devices using different buses. From a practical point of view, the most comfortable situation takes place when all measurement modules communicate with a central computer using only one bus. The CAN bus makes it possible. The CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial bus, produced by Robert Bosh GmbH in 1980s. Although the bus was firstly designed mostly for motor industry, its use was soon extended. The essential CAN bus properties include [1]: • twisted pair wire, • lack of a separate master unit, • configurable bit rate (up to 1 Mbit/s), • the bus length depending on bit rate, • bus access controlled by hardware, • error detection and signaling, • guaranteed transmission times, • short message-oriented transmission, • high interference tolerance. 1 Autor do korespondencji/corresponding author: Marcin Dereń, Eurotech Sp. z o.o., 3 Wojska Polskiego Street, 39-300 Mielec, Poland, tel.: (17) 7887760, e-mail: [email protected] 18 M. Dereń The CAN bus message consists of an identifier (11 or 29 bit), data length code (DLC) and up to 8 bytes of data. The CAN bus enables easy adding of onboard devices which makes it relatively simple to extend the system with new, previously unpredicted elements. Adding another device to the bus does not involve any hardware changes but only software changes which seem to be relatively easiest to make. The use of the CAN bus for controlling UAV platform requires using a uniform protocol enabling data exchange between onboard units. CANaerospace standard has been developed for controlling airborne applications; the standard was defined in 1997. It is an open standard defining messages which are indispensable for the correct functioning of a flying bus. From a user’s standpoint, CANaerospace is a thin software layer imposed on the CAN bus. The basic advantages of protocol include: • multi – master protocol, • code – assigned messages, • self – identifying message format, • ease of transmission continuity control, • openness to extension and modification (also made by user), • ease of implementation. The CAN bus identifier decides about the message, whilst data bytes contain information on Node-Identifier (Node-ID), Service Code and four bytes of data together with the information about their interpretation. The more precise description of the standard one might see in [5]. 2. Control system based on CAN bus The figure 1. presents a scheme of sample distributed control system based on CAN bus in UAV platform. The main elements of the system are: • central computer – functioning as an autopilot, • Air Data Computer (ADC), • IMU/AHRS system, • GPS navigation system, • implementation mechanisms control module (SM). Fig. 1. A flow chart of sample distributed control system based on CAN bus in UAV platform Each of devices connected to the bus sends it data within determined time intervals. Due to the fact that CAN is a serial bus, a single message characterized by strictly determined structure and destination appears in a given moment. The Aminiature on-board data recorder for unmanned platform 19 messages take turns and get to all the devices attached to the bus. However, they can be received and interpreted only by the relevant destination devices. The solution based on CAN bus enables easier modifying a control system which is understood as either the exchange of complete modules connected to the bus or adding new modules. The only requirement here is maintaining software compatibility and that is accomplished by using the uniform CANaerospace protocol. Eurotech LLC, a company from Mielec producing unmanned platforms (shown in fig. 2.) which use CAN bus, worked out a miniature onboard data recorder presented below in fig. 3. The following conditions were set at the stage of its designing: • onboard supplying, • recording data from onboard bus on SD card, • ease of use – the right functioning of the recorder is possible just after inserting the card and connecting power supply, • reading data from the card is carried out by means of an ordinary PC, • data which have been read must be further easily converted to any chosen format (among others, for programs such as Excel, OO Calc, Matlab, Scilab). Fig. 2. UAV MJ – 7 Szogun platform produced by Eurotech LLC from Mielec Fig. 3. Onboard recorder In the case of using a single bus, flight process recording boils down to reading all messages which have appeared on the bus and subsequently saving them to the nonvolatile memory. It is the best when the format of written messages allows to read the collected data easily. Onboard recorder which meets all these expectations is invaluable tool not only for a researcher but also for a user or machine producer. The recorder provides data set which enables analysis of flights, both the ones which have turned out to be successful and those which have been a failure. Moreover, the recorder makes it easier to find the causes of the flight failure. Figure 4. shows a block diagram of the designed recorder. One can distinguish 4 main blocks here: microcontroller block, SD card block, power supply 20 M. Dereń block and CAN driver block. In order to make the diagram clear, only the supply voltage line was shown whilst supplying lines for other modules were neglected. The main element of the recorder module is the ’81 family processor produced by Silabs, chosen mostly because of its inbuilt CAN controller and possibility of recording files on a SD card. CAN driver block ensures galvanic separation from CAN bus. The microcontroller connects with SD card through SPI serial interface. The power supply block provides the correct power supply. What is more, it also ensures reserves of energy, so in case of the power cut-off one may close safely an open file and consequently read it later. The miniaturization of the recorder was possible thanks to its uncomplicated construction including only indispensable elements. Fig. 4. Recorder block diagram Inbuilt detectors were not included within the recorder module as it was assumed that its main task was recording board data and not realizing measuring functions. It results from accepting the general idea of distributed control system, where particular modules are responsible for specific actions, without unnecessary duplication of tasks. Connecting power supply results each time in creating a new file (by recorder). This file contains data taken from the bus. The system monitors a power supply and in the case of a power loss, it closes a file being just created so that the file can be read later. The size of a created file depends on the amount of data appearing in the bus and is limited by the maximum size of a file which is available for FAT files system. The system has been implemented to enhance transferring data from recorder to PC, where the data is read and processed. The speed of saving to SD card limits the number of recorded messages, up to 2000 per second, which is the value completely adequate for the amount of data appearing in the bus. 3. Use of recorder One of the onboard recorder advantages is the ease of its use. After attaching power supply, if only a SD card has been inserted, the process of recording data from the bus is automatically launched. The card should be only formatted before to FAT system. Recorder saves data to the card, creating a new file each time after connecting power supply. All recorded data is saved to files with*.bin extension, which can be easily read on PC. The solution presented in this article is different from others [4] in that using the recorder does not require earlier pre- Aminiature on-board data recorder for unmanned platform 21 paring a file on SD card. Any SD card formatted with the FAT system can be inserted in the recorder which immediately creates a file and starts recording data appearing on the CAN bus. It is worth noticing that a current version of the presented recorder does not allow recording frames to be filtered thus all the communication from the bus is recorded. It might be considered as both an advantage or a disadvantage of the recorder. Initially, the recorder was designed in order to record board data from CAN Aerospace protocol. This intention was abandoned and it was decided to save data on the SD card without any processing. Thanks to it, the recorder has been made more universal and not limited to the one type of a recorded protocol. For easier using of the recorder and viewing collected data, ET company worked out an application which is designed for PC and enables converting saved data to files with extension *.mat for Matlab and *.csv for spreadsheets (MS Excel, OO Calc). The files prepared with the means of this application can be easily analyzed and processed in abovementioned programs. Figure 5. shows a sample Matlab graph, obtained from author’s research [2]. Fig. 5. Example excerpt of data recording converted to Matlab program The recorder presented in this publication is applied in simulation research, but its main use is recording data during a flight. Among others, it has been used in author’s work on fuzzy logic controlling algorytms for UAV platform [2]. It may also serve as UAV monitoring system completion [3] providing all board data which cannot be sent through data line to ground flight control station. 4. Conclusions The recorder described here can be used as a miniature blackbox flight recorder for UAV platform. It is also an invaluable tool in research, not only on UAV platform but also other devices in which communication is conducted via 22 M. Dereń CAN bus. What is more important, the recorder together with PC application designed for it does not impose CANaerospace coding which makes the recorder even more universal tool. Frequently the shell-tube and plate heat exchangers are mainly used in ORC systems. They can be characterized by low ratio of heat flow to heat transfer surface. It influences the size of the heat exchangers, and furthermore, the amount of the material used and the whole installation expense. Interesting alternative for the currently applied heat exchangers might be Rosenblad’s Spiral Heat Exchangers (SHE). What makes this construction so particular is the relatively high ratio of the heat flow to the heat transfer surface. The new design approach dedicated to the Rosenblad’s SHE is presented in this article. The formulated method was applied to the calculations of the Rosenblad’s SHE, which serves as evaporator in the prototype ORC system. The results of the analysis show that the Rosenblad’s SHE is an interesting alternative to other types of the heat exchangers applied presently to the ORC systems. Their application creates a possibility of the reduction of size of the installation, as well as, its expenses. Keywords: spiral heat exchangers, design, ORC, Rosenblad 1. Introduction First spiral heat exchanger was produced in Switzerland by Rosenblad Company in 1932 [7]. Because of many advantages they found wide applications. They are successively applied in paper, petrochemical, food and sugar industries. Important features of spiral heat exchangers are compact design, easy fabrication, high efficiency, small heat losses and low tendency of fouling [2]. Fouling is prevented due to constant change of the direction of the flow, eliminating fluid stagnant zones [10]. In addition, due to geometrical features of this heat exchanger a large heat transfer area is accommodated in relatively small volume [7]. Spiral heat exchangers draw an attention due to its extraordinary construction. Figure 1. pre1 2 Autor do korespondencji/corresponding author: Piotr Kolasiński, Wrocław University of Technology, 27 WybrzeŜe Wyspiańskiego Street, 50-370 Wrocław, Poland, tel.: (71) 3202325, e-mail: [email protected] Zbigniew Rogala, Wrocław University of Technology, e-mail: [email protected] 24 P. Kolasiński, Z. Rogala sents an isometric view of spiral heat exchanger [8]. Its horizontal cross section is shown in fig. 2. They consist of two long plates rolled together in form of double spiral. Constant spacing between the plates is kept. Upper and lower plates are connected to the spiral part. Such a construction creates two, long, spiral, rectangular channels. Fluid can enter the heat exchanger either through central part or from outermost part. It is common for the hot stream to enter the heat exchanger from the center and leave at the periphery. On the contrary, cold fluid enters the heat exchangers from the outermost part, leaving through the center. Such approach allows minimizing heat losses and increasing heat exchanger’s performance. In addition, it means the fluids flow counter-currently. Construction features limits the applicability of spiral heat exchangers. It is not possible to roll the plate thicker than 0.013 mm. It limits the operating pressure to 15 bar [7]. As it was mentioned fluids flow in counter-current. Due to extraordinary geometry of the heat exchanger heat transfer is not purely counter-current flow [1]. Fig. 1. Isometric view of spiral heat exchanger Fig. 2. Cross section of spiral heat exchanger Hot stream exchanges heat with two adjacent cold streams at different temperatures. The result is temperature driving forces are smaller with respect to classic counter-current flow [7]. Due to wide applicability of spiral heat exchangers plenty of methods of calculation were developed. Design approach of single phase heat transfer, comparing achieved results to case study carried by Minton [5] is developed by Picon-Nunez et al. [7]. Numerical validation indicated sufficient convergence. Bes and Roetzel [1] in their work introduced an analytical rating study for the determination of a temperature profile within the plates. They assumed constant overall heat transfer coefficients. Minton [5] introduced empirical correlations for spiral heat exchangers. Correlations for the heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop were presented. The use of spiral heat exchangers in the ORC domestic systems 25 In this paper another method of sizing of spiral heat exchangers is presented. Method is dedicated for ORC application and other applications satisfying taken requirements. Presented case concerns more complex heat transfer: heating, evaporation and superheating of R245fa. Presented spiral heat exchanger is dedicated for operating research ORC system as a replacement for shell tube heat exchanger, currently involved as an evaporator. 2. Mathematical model Nowak [6] suggested mathematical model, coherent to describe the processes taking place in spiral heat exchanger. In order to derive these mathematical equations, the element characterized by angle dϕ (fig. 3.) was established. Following assumptions were taken: • heat capacities of both mediums are constant, • heat transfer coefficients are constant, • the heat is conducted only across the partitions. a) b) Fig. 3. Mathematical model of spiral heat exchanger: a) general view, b) scheme of the heat transfer For each scroll following equations describing heat transfer can be established [6]: • for the hot medium, flowing through the part of the channel, limited by the partitions L and M: dQi' + dQi'' + dQi''' = −W1dTAi (1) 26 P. Kolasiński, Z. Rogala • for cold medium, flowing through the part of the channel, limited by the partitions N and M: dQi'' + dQiIV + dQi +1 = −W2dTBi (2) Transferred heat is calculated from the following equations: ( ) dQi' = k z1−2 h ( ri − b ) TAi − TBi −1 dφ ( (3) ) dQi'' = k z1−2 hri TAi − TBi −1 dφ ( (4) ) b dQi''' = 2k z 0−1b ri − TAi − T0 dφ 2 ( (5) ) (6) ) (7) b dQiIV = 2k z 2 −0b ri − T0 − TBi dφ 2 ( dQi'+1 = k z1−2 h ( ri − b ) TAi +1 − TBi dφ where b ri = r0 + 2b ( i − 1) + φ . π Equations lead to very complex system of differential equations: dφ k h 2k b φ + z1−2 r0 + 2b(i − 1) + 1 − TAi − TBi + z1−0 W1 W1 π 5 b r + b 2 i − + φ T − T = 0 A 0 0 2 π i dTBi k z1−2 h b + r0 + 2b(i − 1) + φ TAi − TBi + dφ W2 π k1−2 h 2 k 2 − 0b φ + r0 + 2b(i − 1) + 1 − TAi +1 − TBi + W2 W2 π 3 b r b 2 i φ T T 0 + − + − = 0 0 B i 2 π dTAi + ( ) k z1− 2 h b r0 + 2b(i − 1) + φ TAi − TBi + W1 π ( ( ) ) ( ( ( ) ) ) (8) The use of spiral heat exchangers in the ORC domestic systems 27 Solutions suggested by Nowak [6] are very complex and therefore hard to be applied as they require complex matrix calculations. 3. Exchanger geometry Complex study of expressions describing geometry of spiral heat exchanger was published by Dongwu [2]. This work provides equations for spiral diameter, the number of turns and length of semicircles. Nowak [6] also established mathematical tools to express the geometry of spiral heat exchanger. It contains expression for the length of semicircles, the number of turns and area of rolled plates. The aim of geometry calculations is to obtain the length of semicircles. Thus, if other geometry issues are known the area of heat transfer can be calculated: Atotal = (lsp − 2 r0 )h (9) and after solving quadratic equation also the number of scrolls expressed either as an Arabic number: lsp − 2 r0 0 = 2bn 2 + (2r0 − b)n − r0 + π (10) or as an angle of bending: ndeg = n 360o (11) According to Nowak [6] and Picon-Nunez et al. [7] geometrical dimensions should stay inside following ranges: • channel width: b = 5-25 mm, • inner spiral diameter: r0 = 150-300 mm, • outer spiral diameter: R0 = 500-2000 mm, • plate height: H = 100-1800 mm, • plate thickness: ρ ≥ 13 mm. 4. Heat transfer description Overall heat transfer coefficient is given by: U= 1 1 ρ 1 + + h1 k h2 (12) 28 P. Kolasiński, Z. Rogala where: h1, h2 – convection heat transfer coefficients, k – thermal conductivity of material of construction of the wall. The heat exchanged through elemental surface Ai is given by: Q& i = U i Ai ∆Ti (13) where ∆Ti – normal temperature difference for i element. ∆Ti is given by: ∆Ti = T1,i − T2,i (14) where: T1,i – an inlet temperature of stream 1 obtained for element i, T2,i – an inlet temperature of stream 2 obtained for element i. Convection heat transfer coefficients are given by: h= Nu k Dh (15) where: Nu – Nusselt criterial number, Dh – hydraulic diameter. Hydraulic diameter is given by: Dh = 2 Hb H +b (16) Overall Nusselt number is given by: Nu = C Re a Pr b (17) where coefficients C, a, b are dependent on conditions of heat transfer: Reynolds number, shape of the free flow area etc. Reynolds number is given by: Re = wDh v (18) where: w – mean velocity of the fluid, v – a kinetic viscosity. Prandtl number is given by: Pr = cpµ k where: cp – specific heat, µ – dynamic viscosity. (19) The use of spiral heat exchangers in the ORC domestic systems 29 Accordingly to Nowak [6], due to additional turbulences during movement around the spiral convection heat transfer coefficient is greater than for the flow through typical straight channel. The coefficient improvement is given by: D h = hstraight 1 + 1,77 h Ri (20) where: hstraight – a convection heat transfer coefficient achieved for the same thermodynamic conditions in straight channel, Ri – average bending radius for i section. 5. Design methodology Due to the construction of spiral heat exchanger every hot channel (channel filled with hot fluid) is surrounded by two cold channels and vice versa. Such case of heat transfer is very complex. Its solution requires simplifying assumptions. Presented design approach assumes the temperature of the one of the fluids involved in heat transfer remains constant. Such assumption allows considering and solving this case as a simplified case presented in fig. 4. Fig. 4. Simplified heat exchange in spiral heat exchanger Fluids flow counter-currently in long straight channels. Heat is exchanged through the shared plate. External plates are assumed to be adiabatic. It is assumed that the temperature of one of the fluids is constant. It is recommended to select the fluid characterized by higher specific heat. Its temperature undergoes smaller changes and taken assumption is closer to actual conditions. If one of the fluids undergoes phase transition its temperature remains constant satisfying the assumption. Only selection of the geometry and heat transfer calculations are considered in presented paper. Methodology was completely discussed and described by Rogala [8]. Method is carried as follows: STEP 1. Selection of the geometry of the spiral heat exchanger. At this point width, height and thickness of the plates and inner spiral diameter have to be selected. Their dimensions are recommended to stay inside suggested ranges. 30 P. Kolasiński, Z. Rogala STEP 2. In case of complex heat exchange e.g. consisting of preheating, evaporation and superheating each case of heat transfer has to be considered separately. STEP 3. Preliminary calculations. Usually it is known at once what is the inlet and the desired outlet temperatures or the exchanged heat. Accordingly to this knowledge heat exchange limits are given. Assuming no losses energy balance of heat exchanger is given by: m& 1c p1 (T1,in − T1,out ) = m& 2 c p 2 (T2,out − T2,in ) (21) where: fluid 1. – heating medium, fluid 2. – heated medium, m& 1 and m& 2 – mass flow rates respectively of 1st and 2nd fluid. It is assumed the fluids do not undergo any phase transition during heat transfer. STEP 4. Establishment of heat transfer surface per section. Performance of the heat exchanger will be calculated for established section’s heat transfer surface. The calculations are carried out for every section separately. Assumed quantity of section’s heat transfer surface depends on precision we want to achieve. STEP 5. Heat transfer calculations within the established section. The calculation includes estimation of the temperatures, required thermodynamic parameters etc. Calculation temperature of constant-temperature fluid is given by: T j ,av = T j ,1 + T j ,n 2 (22) where: Tj,1 – a temperature of the fluid at the beginning of the process, Tj,n – a temperature at its end. The correlations of the fluids’ temperatures between adjacent sections are following: T j in ,i = T j out ,i −1 (23) T j out ,i = T j in ,i +1 (24) Basing on equation difference of temperature is estimated. Further calculations lead to establishment of heat transfer coefficients. At last achieved overall heat transfer coefficient and obtained temperature difference serve to calculate heat exchanged for considered section. The heat is given by: Q& i = U i Ai ∆Ti (25) The use of spiral heat exchangers in the ORC domestic systems 31 Calculations described in this step are carried until either heat equality is satisfied: ∑i =1Q& i ≥ Q& n (26) where Q& – overall heat exchanged during the process resulting from energy balance, or temperature equality are satisfied: T j out ,i ≥ T j out (27) For heated medium, where Tj out is a temperature resulting from preliminary energy balance: T j out ,i ≤ T j out (28) For heating medium, where Tj out is a temperature resulting from preliminary energy balance. STEP 6. Summary. When the requirements from previous step are satisfied overall surface of heat transfer is summed. Its value is given by: Atotal = ∑i =1 Ai n (29) Dongwu [2] suggested an equation for the number of spiral rounds: 2 b b 4 Lb − r0 − + r0 − + 2 2 π N= 2b (30) where L – a length of the spiral. Heat exchanger consists of two spirals. It is assumed that their length is equal. Therefore the length is given by: L= Atotal +1 2H (31) Additional round is suggested to be added because external part of spiral heat exchanger is excluded from heat transfer. In simplified consideration it is involved in the process. Presented methodology neglects heat transfer through other elements than spiral plates. 32 P. Kolasiński, Z. Rogala 6. Case study Proposed methodology of spiral heat exchanger design was applied to design evaporator operating within research ORC system. The simplified scheme of this system is shown in fig. 5. The system is fully described by Kolasiński [4]. Spiral heat exchanger is suggested as a replacement of shell-tube evaporator. Currently operating heat exchanger satisfies successfully its duty, however due to its big dimensions and significant weight it seems to be the most proper solution. It was searched whether current solution can be improved by application of spiral heat exchangers. The algorithm was implemented in Excel. The calculations are semiautomatic. It is necessary to control and extend the calculations personally, however most of them are already prepared. The process can be definitely improved and its application and run can be simplified for the users. The heat exchangers were designed for the stream data shown in tab. 1. Thermodynamic parameters are given as mean values. Working fluid of ORC system is HFC refrigerant R245fa. It is colorless, non-flammable and practically nontoxic. Its technical documentation is included in references [3]. Calculations carried for stream data given in tab. 1 resulted with geometry of spiral heat exchanger shown in tab. 2. Moreover the distribution of temperature along the plate length was established. It is shown in fig. 6. Achieved geometry helps to estimate the space hold and the weight of spiral heat exchanger. It allows to compare these parameters achieved for shell-tube and spiral heat exchangers. This comparison is shown in tab. 3. Application of spiral heat exchanger reduces significantly required surface of heat transfer. Moreover dimensions of the evaporator are decreased greatly (in case of vertical dimension reduction is more than triple). It results in nearly 6 times smaller space hold. However the biggest Fig. 5. All mentioned advantages make spiral heat exchanger very attractive alternative for already applied heat exchangers. 34 P. Kolasiński, Z. Rogala Fig. 6. Temperature distribution in spiral heat exchanger 7. Conclusions New method for the sizing of spiral heat exchangers dedicated for ORC systems has been introduced. Simplification assumes constant temperature of one of the fluids. This assumption corresponds to actual small variation of temperature of the water in considered case. Along the heat exchanger temperature of the water changes from 90 to 77.1°C. However considering preheating, evaporation and superheating separately changes of water temperature are smaller. Therefore taken assumption seems to be justified. Presented methodology is a basis for preliminary sizing of spiral heat exchangers. Application of spiral heat exchanger as an evaporator in considered case resulted in significant improvement of heat transfer rate. Spiral heat exchanger outranks shell-tube heat exchanger at any field. Reduction of space hold leads to minimization of size of the facility. Outstanding reduction of weight allows to minimize the costs of materials. Suggested heat exchanger seems to be interesting alternative for currently applied construction. Summing, presented paper provides only new methodology of design but also indicates applicability of this concept of heat exchanger in Organic Rankin Cycle technologies. Wyznaczono m.in. zaleŜności na szybkość suszenia w funkcji temperatury i wilgotności powietrza wentylacyjnego. (tj. uwodnienie ok. 23%). Osady ściekowe trafiające do suszarni charakteryzują się zazwyczaj wilgotnością na poziomie 4 kgH2O/kg s.m. (tj. uwodnieniem ok. 80%), opuszczające suszarnie z kolei – wilgotnością ok. 20-25%. Proces suszenia osadów ściekowych w suszarniach słonecznych przebiega zatem w całości w warunkach pierwszego okresu suszenia. 2. Rozpatrując suszarnię o znanej powierzchni czynnej złoŜa suszonego materiału i niezmiennych w czasie prowadzenia procesu nastawach instalacji wentylacyjnej, moŜna załoŜyć, Ŝe: A ⋅ k y = C = const. 3. Instalacja doświadczalna w SkarŜysku-Kamiennej Podstawowe załoŜenia konstrukcyjne suszarni w SkarŜysku-Kamiennej zostały przedstawione w pracach [1, 5, 11]. Na utwardzonej podbudowie posadowiono konstrukcję typowego tunelu ogrodniczego o wymiarach 60 m długości i 9 m szerokości. Pokrycie suszarni wykonano z jednokomorowych płyt poliwęglanowych grubości 8 mm. Instalacja wentylacyjna suszarni została skonfigurowana w sposób zapewniający prostopadły nadmuch powietrza na powierzchnię suszoną. W suszarni słonecznej w SkarŜysku-Kamiennej zainstalowano nawowy, szynowy przegarniacz osadów o rozpiętości 8 m. 4. Wyniki pomiarów Program badań obejmował ciągłą rejestrację m.in. temperatury i wilgotności względnej powietrza zewnętrznego (nawiewanego do suszarni) oraz opuszczającego suszarnię. Suszeniu poddano ok. 80 Mg odwodnionych, przefermentowanych osadów o uwodnieniu 80%. W czasie całego cyklu instalacja pracowała przy stałych parametrach: strumienia powietrza nawiewanego i pracy przegarniacza. W czasie prowadzenia procesu dominowały dni z bezpośrednią operacją słońca, o relatywnie wysokich temperaturach powietrza. W ciągu trwającego 17 dób procesu suszenia uwodnienie osadu zostało zmniejszone z 80 do 21% w wyniku odparowania ok. 60 Mg wody. 5. Dalej przedstawiono wykres (rys. 1.) sporządzony na podstawie danych pomiarowych z analizowanego cyklu suszenia, obrazujący postulowaną zaleŜność. Na podstawie analizy tego wykresu naleŜy stwierdzić, Ŝe istotnie istnieje proporcjonalna zaleŜność pomiędzy przyrostem zawartości wilgoci w powietrzu wentylacyjnym (obrazującym chwilową szybkość suszenia) a chwilową wartością potencjału suszarniczego powietrza wentylacyjnego. Wartość współczynnika korelacji pomiędzy obydwoma zbiorami danych wynosi ponad 0,78. Badania doświadczalne suszarni słonecznej osadów ściekowych... 41 Rys. 1. Ventilation air moisture content growth as a function of drying potential of that air in analyzed period of dryer operation – experimental data Dalsza analiza wyników pomiarów była ukierunkowana na znalezienie zaleŜności pomiędzy wspomnianymi wielkościami. Przyjęto dwie postulowane postaci poszukiwanej zaleŜności, tj.: • model jednoparametrowy; A, B – stałe, Pz – potencjał suszarniczy powietrza wentylacyjnego ∆Ym1 = A ⋅ Pz + B (7) • model dwuparametrowy; A, B, D – stałe, U – moc promieniowania sło- necznego wewnątrz suszarni ∆Ym 2 = A ⋅ Pz + B ⋅ U + D (8) Stałe w obydwu modelach były poszukiwane przez dopasowanie danych modelowych do danych rzeczywistych metodą najmniejszych kwadratów. Wartości wyliczonych stałych zestawiono w tab. 1. Tabela 1. Ventilation air moisture content growth as a function of drying potential of that air analyzed period of dryer operation – experimental data and modeling results Model uwzględniający wartość natęŜenia promieniowania słonecznego (równanie (8)) przewiduje chwilowy przyrost zawartości wilgoci w powietrzu wentylacyjnym lepiej niŜ model opierający się tylko na wartości potencjału odbioru wilgoci powietrza wentylacyjnego (równanie (7)). EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF SOLAR SEWAGE SLUDGE DRYER – EVAPORATION RATE AS A FUNCTION OF VENTILATION PARAMETERS Summary Solar sewage sludge dryers are becoming increasingly popular solution used in small and medium-sized sewage treatment plants as part of their sludge management. Despite their growing popularity, there are few works in the literature concerning the description of thermal and flow processes occurring in this type of facilities. There is also lack of design and operational recommendations for the construction of solar drying of sludge. It is associated with a very small group of producers as well as their high dependence on local conditions. The article uses an approach based on the concept of ventilation air drying potential, for the analysis of dryer work – prediction of evaporation rate as a function of the temperature and humidity of the ventilation air. The analyzes were based on experimental data collected during the test operation of solar drying of sewage sludge located in SkarŜysko-Kamienna (Poland). W przemyśle energetycznym faza zmiany procesu (wrzenie, kondensacja) zachodzi najczęściej w parowniku i kondensatorze. Na dwie fazy przepływu wpływa wiele zjawisk, takich jak róŜna struktura przepływu, określony kształt bąbli i kropli itd. MoŜna zatem stosować róŜne podejścia do określania spadku ciśnienia dla przepływu dwufazowego. Podczas modelowania zjawiska przepływu dwufazowego muszą być rozwaŜane trzy zjawiska charakteryzujące spadek ciśnienia: spadek ciśnienia statycznego, pędu oraz spadek ciśnienia związany z tarciem. W artykule porównano następujące modele tarciowego spadku ciśnienia: homogeniczny model przepływu, modele Lockharta-Martinellego, Friedela, Chisholma oraz graficzną metodę Martinellego-Nelsona. Przedstawionych modeli matematycznych uŜyto do obliczenia spadku ciśnienia w parowniku kotła OP-210. MoŜna to wytłumaczyć niską jakością pary (poniŜej 0,1), podczas gdy przepływ dwufazowy występuje w pionowych rurach parownika. 3. Modele słuŜące do wyznaczenia spadków ciśnienia 3.1. 1.). Tabela 1. Wartości parametru C (na podstawie [1, 3, 4, 10]) Table 1. Values of C parameter (on the basis of [1, 3, 4, 10]) Faza ciekła turbulentny laminarny turbulentny laminarny Faza gazowa turbulentny turbulentny laminarny laminarny C 20 12 10 5 3.4. 3.5. Rozpatrywany kontur cyrkulacyjny kok tła OP-210 składa się z 5 rur doprowadzających wodę do rury opadowej, 3 rur łączących rurę opadową z kolektorem dolnym, a następnie 30 szt. rur ekranowych. Rury ekranowe połączone z kolektorem zbiorczym przechodzą w 12 rur doprowadzających mieszaninę parowo-wodn parowo ą do walczaka [2, 11]. In power engineering equipment, the phase change process (boiling, condensation) takes place mostly in power boilers evaporator and a condenser. Two-phase flow is affected by many phenomena, like different flow patterns, specific shape of bubbles and droplets, interphase slip, etc. Therefore different approaches in determining the pressure drop for two-phase flow can be applied. The three methods for determining pressure drop must be considered when modelling the two-phase flow phenomena: the static, the momentum and the frictional pressure drops. This paper compares the following models of frictional pressure drop: homogeneous flow model, Lockhart-Martinelli, Friedel and Chisholm models, and Martinelli-Nelson graphical method. Presented mathematical models are used to calculate pressure drop in the evaporator of OP-210 power boiler for which the heat flux was evaluated from measurements. The comparison shows, that the frictional pressure drop obtained from the presented models gives almost the same values. The share of the frictional pressure drop in the total pressure drop is slight. It can be explained by the low steam quality (lower than 0.1), when the two-phase flow occurs in the vertical tubes of evaporator. Small brass compress was used for cooling purposes. The skin recovery process was then analysed. Temperature history for N = 14 samples was recorded using IR camera. The samples come from 8 male adults (age 25-38 years). A numerical model of heat transfer in tissues and CFD model of surrounding air (natural convection) was proposed. Simulation results were validated against experimental data. Keywords: numerical modelling, validation, bioheat equation, skin lesions, malignant melanoma 1. Introduction The accurate numerical models of living tissue are of high importance among numerous modern biomedical engineering challenges. Such models can not only allow one to understand processes involved, but they can help to develop a new treatment and/or equipment used to assist medical staff during diagnosis and controlled treatment process [3, 6]. The work presented here is a part of wider research project targeted in verifying the possibility of early diagnosis of skin lesions, with special interest in malignant melanoma identification. 1 2 3 4 5 Autor do korespondencji/corresponding author: Ziemowit Ostrowski, Instytut Techniki Cieplnej, Politechnika Śląska, 22 Konarskiego Street, 44-100 Gliwice, Poland, tel.: (32) 2372302, e-mail: [email protected] Piotr Buliński, Politechnika Śląska, e-mail: [email protected] Wojciech Adamczyk, Politechnika Śląska, e-mail: [email protected] Paweł Kozołub, Politechnika Śląska, e-mail: [email protected] Andrzej J. The passive part of heat transfer in the living tissues describes Pennes’ bioheat equation [2]: cρ ∂T ( r, t ) = ∇ k (T ) ∇T ( r, t ) + qm ( r, t ) + ω b ( r, t ) cb ρb Ta − T ( r, t ) ∂t (1) where: c, cb – specific heat (tissue, blood), ρ, ρb – density (tissue, blood), T, Ta – temperature (tissue, perfusing (artery) blood), t – time, k – tissue heat conductivity, qm – metabolic heat production rate, ωb – blood perfusion rate, r – vector coordinate. Metabolism. The metabolic heat production rate qm is a sum of the basal value qm,0 and additional ∆qm part, being result of autonomic thermoregulation: qm = qm ,0 + ∆qm (2) where qm,0 – metabolic heat production rate for thermoneutral conditions (i.e., body in thermal equilibrium with environment). Under non-neutral conditions metabolic rates vary with the local tissue temperature. The dependency of temperature on metabolism is modelled according to the Q10 relation. It states that for every 10 K reduction (change) in the tissue temperature, there is a corresponding reduction (change) in the cell metabolism ∆qm by the factor Q10 = 2, as reported in [1]: ∆qm = qm ,0 ⋅ 2( T −T0 ) /10 − 1 (3) where T0 – basal temperature distribution (i.e., in thermoneutral conditions). Perfusion. In non-neutral conditions the perfusion rate ωb (i.e., tissue blood flow related to tissue value) varies with changes in regional metabolic rates as well. The dependency of the perfusion rate ωb change on variations of the metabolic heat production rate ∆qm (3) is linear [4]: ∆β = µb ∆qm (4) where: β = ωbcbρb – blood perfusion energy equivalent, while µb = 0.932 K–1 – empirically estimated proportionality constant [1, 5]. Numerical model of heat transfer in skin lesions 57 Using the above definition of β, the most right term of eq. (1), which is a source term arising from the arterial blood perfusing the tissue, reads: q p = β (Ta − T ) = ( β 0 + ∆β )(Ta − T ) = (ω b,0 cb ρb + µb ∆qm ) ( Ta − T ) (5) where ωb,0 – basal perfusion rate for thermoneutral conditions. Active thermoregulation. Neither vasoconstriction/vasodilatation, shivering thermogenesis, nor sweating was introduced in the model at hand. 2.2. Numerical model The numerical model of human forearm, cooling compress and surrounding air was developed. The numerical simulations were carried out using ANSYS Fluent 14 commercial CFD package (ANSYS Inc., USA). The additional source terms of heat conduction equation arising in bioheat transfer eq. (1) were introduced by means of UDF (user-defined function) functionality of the ANSYS Fluent code. a) b) Fig. 1. The 3-D geometrical model of the computational domain is presented in fig. 1. The human forearm was modelled as a cylinder surrounded by a cylindrical volume of air. Multiple concentric homogeneous layers represent- 58 Z. Ostrowski, P. Buliński, W. Adamczyk, P. Kozołub, A.J. Nowak ing different tissues types (bone, muscle, fat, inner skin, outer skin) were considered. The outer diameter of each layer is shown in tab. 1. The modelled length of arm was 200 mm which is enough to provide solution of independence of the boundary condition applied on the external boundaries: thermal insulation for tissue and pressure outlet for surrounding air (backflow air temperature 23°C). Due to the symmetry of the model, only a quarter part of the model was considered. Small cylindrical volume on top of the forearm represents the cooling compress used in the thermal stimulation (cooling) of skin. Numerical mesh was generated using ICEM CFD (Ansys Inc., USA). Tetrahedral meshing scheme was used. In order to verify the influence of mesh size on the numerical solution, three grids were tested (namely: 0.3 M, 1.2 M and 5.5 M elements) in steady state simulations. For each case, the mesh was refined in cooling compress vicinity (i.e., where steepest temperature gradients were expected). Finally, based on results comparison, 1.2 M tetrahedral elements mesh was selected for further simulations. To check final quality of grid aspect ratio was tested (i.e., scaled ratio between the volume of the element and the radius of its circumscribed sphere power three). The mesh quality histogram is presented in fig. 2., where the worst element has aspect ratio above 0.3 while over 50% of elements have quality 0.6 and higher. Table 1. The set of 4 equations was solved for each time step (arising from mass, momentum in 3D and energy conservation). Air flow was assumed laminar, with second order upwind scheme. Air density for natural convection was modelled using Boussinesq model approach. Operating conditions were taken as: pressure 101.325 kPa, temperature 288.15 K, density 1.225 kg·m–3. Gravity was set to 9.81 m·s–2 in vertical direction (cooling compress was placed on top of the forearm). Constant air properties were assumed: specific heat 1006.43 J·kg–1·K–1, thermal conductivity 0.0242 W·m–1·K–1, viscosity 1.79E-05 kg·m–1·s–1 and thermal expansion coefficient 0.00343 K–1. Time step. For transient part of the simulation the sensitivity analysis of time discretization was done as well. Three time steps were selected and tested against their influence on the results, namely: 0.25 s, 0.5 s and 1 s. Taking into account obtained results and computation time, the time step 0.5 s was selected for transient simulation in the current study. 2.3. Experiment The proposed numerical model of skin cooling and rewarming processes was validated against experimental data collected from subjects examined in course of pilot medical experiment (being part of wider research project). The medical ethical committee of Maria Skłodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer and Institute of Oncology Gliwice Branch approved the study. Each subject gave written consent prior to participation in the study. For the initial analysis at hand, the group of eight adult males was selected. Subject’s characteristics (mean ± SD) are: age 31.1 ± 5.0, height 1.80 m ± 0.07 m, weight 102.0 ± 10.4 kg. The studied skin sites were dorsal and ventral side of the left forehand halfway the wrist and inner side of the elbow. The subjects were asked to stay sited for 15 minutes prior to the measurements. The skin temperature history was recorded using PI160 (Optris GmbH, Germany) infrared camera (160 x 120 px, 120 Hz, LWIR, 7.5-13.0 µm detector, standard lens 23° x 17°). Cooling of skin was done by means of brass cooling compress at stabilized initial temperature 6-7°C. The basal (thermoneutral) skin temperatures were measured by wireless iButton DS1922L (Maxim Integrated, USA) temperature data logger attached using adhesive tape near cooling zone (approx. 3 cm). Room temperature was measured using Almemo 2390-5 multifunction measuring instrument (AHLBORN, Germany) equipped with K-type thermocouple sensor. 3. Numerical simulations Numerical computations were carried out in three steps: (a) steady state simulation tuning model variables to mimic thermoneutral conditions being ini- 60 Z. Ostrowski, P. Buliński, W. Adamczyk, P. Kozołub, A.J. Nowak tial state for following step; (b) transient simulation of skin cooling; (c) transient simulation of skin recovering from local cooling. Steady state simulation was performed in order to get an initial temperature distribution and tune model variables: metabolic heat production rate qm and perfusion rate ωb as in the thermoneutral state (i.e., model in thermal equilibrium with environment). During this step the type of volume representing cooling compress was set to fluid having the same properties as surrounding air. Uniform constant temperature of 23°C was prescribed for the whole computational domain (both forearm and air) and uniform zero velocity was prescribed within the air domain. Outer radius of all tissue layers of the modelled forearm, as well as tissue properties [4] and initial metabolic heat production rates and perfusion rates are presented in tab. 1. The temperature (see fig. 3.) and velocity distribution being the result of steady state analysis is then prescribed as initial condition for further transient calculations. In addition, the resulting temperature distribution, metabolic heat production rate and perfusion rate are thereafter treated as the basal metabolic heat production rate qm,0, basal blood perfusion rate ωb,0 and basal temperature distribution T0 entering eqs. (2), (3) and (5). Fig. 3. Initial temperature distribution (in symmetry plane of the compress) for transient analysis: tissues (top) and surrounding air (bottom) Cooling. To mimic the skin cooling procedure, during the first step of transient analysis, the material type of volume representing cooling compress was temporarily switched to solid having properties of brass: density 8500 kg·m–3, specific heat 380 J·kg–1·K–1 and thermal conductivity 110 W·m–1·K–1 and prescribed uniform initial temperature 7°C. Then transient simulation was run to simulate 15 s of local skin cooling. Recovery. Once simulation of skin cooling is finished, the temperature and velocity field as well as model variables were stored and used as initial values for the next step. The material type of volume representing cooling compress is Numerical model of heat transfer in skin lesions 61 then switched back to fluid having properties of air (uniform temperature 23°C). Then transient simulation of skin recovering from local cooling is executed for total time 100 s after cooling is finished. 4. Results The mean skin temperature history ± SD of N = 14 samples is shown in fig. 4. (each temperature represents the coldest skin surface point in area where cooling compress was applied). Contact resistance. As first attempt, ideal contact between cooling compress and the skin was assumed. However simulated temperature response was far below those measured (see dashed black line in fig. 4.). To simulate nonideal contact conditions taking place during experiment (being result of hair presence, limited cooling compress pressure, etc.) contact resistance was added. The simulation results for contact resistance 0.001 m2·K·W–1 are shown in fig. 4. (solid black line). Fig. 4. Skin temperature variation vs. time for measuring data and CFD simulation, the results are presented for time after cooling compress is removed 5. Conclusion As the result of preliminary research the numerical model of the human forearm undergoing the skin thermostimulation was developed and validated. However, further research is needed towards the proper contact resistance determination, as well as in implementation of additional active thermoregulation models (including vasoconstriction and vasodilatation). 62 Z. Koszt energetyczny separacji, niezaleŜnie od zastosowanej technologii, jest duŜy i przekłada się na znaczący spadek sprawności procesu wytwarzania energii elektrycznej. W pracy przedstawiono rezultaty obliczeń optymalizacyjnych dla bloku nadkrytycznego o mocy 900 MWe zintegrowanego z układem VPSA (Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption) adsorpcyjnej separacji dwutlenku węgla i układem przygotowania wyseparowanego gazu do transportu. ZałoŜono, Ŝe pomimo nieznacznych róŜnic w temperaturze CO2 wchodzącego do chłodnic międzystopniowych, wychodzący strumień wody będzie mieszany i transportowany do układu regeneracji juŜ jako jeden strumień o średniej temperaturze. NaleŜy zaznaczyć, Ŝe wprowadzanie strumieni ciepła do układu regeneracji bloku było uwarunkowane zachowaniem nominalnych parametrów termodynamicznych czynnika obiegowego w charakterystycznych punktach układu regeneracji. ANALISYS OF POSSIBILITY OF HEAT RECUPERATION FROM CO2 SEPARATION SYSTEM FOR POWER STATION LOAD Summary The necessity of reduction of CO2 emission to atmosphere remains the important problem that energy sector stands against. The energetic cost of separation, regardless of technology applied, is significant and makes electricity generation efficiency also to decrease significantly. The paper presents results of optimisation calculations of supercritical 900 MWe power plant integrated with VPSA (Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption) CO2 separation adsorption unit as well as the system of separated carbon dioxide compression for transportation. The application of VPSA technology determines the necessity of flue gas compression before adsorption, and from the other hand generation of a low pressure on desorption – product side. That means, the compression sys- 70 M. Panowski, R. Zarzycki tem must be used, and the large amount of energy is needed for its exploitation. The main aim of performed calculations was the assessment of possibilities of heat recuperation from intercooled multistage compression system. The analysis concerned recuperation of heat into the hot water regeneration system of the power plant. Different places of integration of intercooling system were analysed. Moreover, different heat amount as well as temperatures of heat carriers were considered. The results obtained show that by appropriate selection of thermodynamic parameters of heat carriers as well as heat distribution it is possible to increase the total energy efficiency of a power plant of about 2 percentage points relative to the case without heat recuperation. The mean value of heat transfer coefficient has been calculated using Woschni and Nusselt equation and compared with results obtained using algorithm based on experimental data. The proposed algorithm can be helpful to determine the average values of heat transfer coefficient from working medium to the combustion chamber walls (crown of a cylinder head, cylinder walls and piston head) during combustion process. The calculation method includes modified one zone heat release model in combustion chamber of SI engine. Proposed method is based on the energy balance equation closed by the coefficient which expresses the heat losses to the walls of the combustion chamber. Keywords: heat transfer coefficient, combustion engines, in-cylinder pressure 1. Introduction There are two main methods which describe the phenomena occurring in the cylinder of combustion engine. The first method applies the macroscale models. In this approach a few zones are investigated (eg. flame, unburned mixture, exhaust) with different degrees of fidelity of real phenomena. These type of mathematical models give a good quantitative results and their main advantage is short computation time. The weak point is the lack of information on the instantaneous values of the analyzed parameters in different places of engine combustion chamber. However, in many cases, the phenomenological macroscale models are sufficient in the engine parameters calculations. The second method based on multidimensional models which enable to determine instantaneous 1 2 3 Autor do korespondencji/corresponding author: Grzegorz Przybyła, Silesian University of Technology, 22 Konarskiego Street, 44-100 Gliwice, Poland, tel.: (32) 2372983, e-mail: gprzybyla @polsl.pl Stefan Postrzednik, Silesian University of Technology, e-mail: [email protected] Zbigniew śmudka, Silesian University of Technology, e-mail: [email protected] 72 G. Przybyła, S. Postrzednik, Z. śmudka value of internal parameters at chosen places of combustion chamber. In this paper the single-zone heat release model was used in the computations. It was assumed that at any time of the combustion process, the working medium contained in the cylinder is homogeneous. Moreover, the thermodynamic state of working medium describes the averaged values of thermodynamic parameters specified for instantaneous value of cylinder volume. The initial condition of working medium is it’s the state after compression (the homogenous air-fuel mixture). The scheme of combustion chamber energy balance is presented in fig. 1. The following assumptions have been made: the working medium is considered as a ideal gas with a change of composition during combustion process, the specific heat is a function of average temperature in cylinder, the change of working medium composition is taken into account by instantaneous value of fuel mass fraction burned (MFB) the heat losses into the combustion chamber walls are closing the energy balance equation. Fig. 1. Energy balance of engine combustion chamber The chemical energy of the fuel is a significant part of the energy balance equation. The energy is released gradually according to combustion process rate, what is expressed by MFB function. Besides, the balance equation includes the change of total internal energy and internal work. The heat losses are close to the balance. Finally, the energy balance equation can be described using the first law of thermodynamic, as follow: dU + dL + dQsc + dEns = 0 (1) where: dU – internal energy change, dL – elementary internal work done by working medium, dQsc – elementary heat losses transferred to combustion chamber walls, dEub – chemical energy of unburned fuel. Taking into account the equation of state for ideal gas in the eq. (1) and next describing it in differential form without heat loss, the heat release rate equation (net value) is described as follows: The heat transfer coefficient calculations of internal... 73 dE 1 1 dV dp = + V (α ) κ (T , MFBv ) p(α ) (2) dα dα dα LHVub κ (T , MFBv ) − 1 1 − δ ub LHV f where: κ (T, MFBv) – the function of the specific heat ratio, V(α) – the engine volume as a function of the crank angle, p(α) – the in-cylinder pressure measured as a function of the crank angle, δub – the mass fraction of unburned fuel, LHVub – lower heating value of unburned species at the working medium, LHVf – lower heating of the fuel. After integration the eq. (2) at the range of combustion period from αp (start of combustion) to α* (current value of crank angle during combustion), the net amount of energy realised in the cylinder can be expressed by: Ed (α * ) = = 1 α* 1 dV dp ∫ [κ (T , MFB ) − 1] κ (T , MFBv ) p(α ) dα + V (α ) dα dα LHVub α p 1 − δ ub LHV f v (3) where: α* – current value of crank angle during combustion process, αp – value of crank angle at start of combustion process. The upper limit of integration reaches the values from the range of [αp-αk], where the αk is the value of crank angle at the end of combustion process. The total amount of net heat released in the cylinder will reach when α * → α k . The actual heat input to the cylinder during a single working cycle is related to the amount of chemical energy contained at the fuel dose. Therefore, the amount of chemical energy supplied to the cylinder can be noted as: E x ,0 = m p ,0 LHV f (4) where mp,0 – fuel dose supplied on single engine cycle. The value of heat losses can be determined by subtracting the amount of net heat released in the cylinder (eq. (3)) from the actual heat supplied during the working cycle (eq. (4)). Then the final equation of the heat losses during combustion process is as below [4]: 74 G. Przybyła, S. Postrzednik, Z. śmudka Qsc = m p ,0 LHV f + − 1 αk 1 dV dp + V (α ) κ (T , MFBv ) p(α ) dα dα dα ∫ [κ (T , MFB ) − 1] LHVub α p 1 − δ ns LHV f v (5) The specific heat ratio employed in this model was calculated as a function of the in-cylinder temperature and the charge composition. Determination of the total heat loss during combustion process, according to the eq. (5) allows designation of the heat transfer coefficient of the working medium to the wall of the engine combustion chamber. 2. Heat transfer coefficient calculations There are many papers [e.g. 1, 2, 3], which describe the methodology how to determine the heat transfer coefficient in internal combustion engine. However, usually each formula presented in the literature gives different values, even is used for the same engine and in the same engine working condition. These empirical equations based on observations using the turbulent heat transfer equations for tubes. One of the most popular formula to determine the heat transfer coefficient is developed by Woschni. For combustion period and expansion process the equation can be written as: α sc ,W = 820 D −0.2 p (α ) 0.8 −3 VsT2 2.28 w p + 3.24 ⋅ 10 p V ( p (α ) − p0 ) 2 2 0.8 T (α ) −0.53 (6) where: w p – mean piston speed, function of the specific heat ratio, p(α) – instantaneous cylinder pressure, T(α) – instantaneous cylinder temperature, V(α) – swept volume, p2, T2, V2 – parameters evaluated at start of combustion process, p0 – motoring pressure. The second equation is given by Nusselt [3]: α sc , N = 5.41 ⋅ 10−4 3 p (α ) T (α ) (1 + 1.24 w p ) 3 (7) The heat transfer from the combustion products occurs by convection and radiation. The value of the heat transfer coefficient obtained by eq. (6) and (7) includes convection only. In the spark ignition engine radiation may account for up to 20 per cent of the heat transfer. Adopting such an assumption it will be The heat transfer coefficient calculations of internal... 75 possible to check what is the difference in results obtained by Woschni and Nusselt equation and when using algorithm based on net heat release in cylinder. In accordance with the principles of heat transfer, the heat flux, transferred from the combustion products to the walls of the working engine space can be described: Qɺ sc = A(α ) α sc [ T (α ) − Tsc ] (8) where: A(α) – instantaneous heat exchange surface (crown of a cylinder head, cylinder walls and piston head), αsc – total heat transfer coefficient (includes convection and radiation), T(α) – instantaneous cylinder temperature, Tsc – average temperature of the heat exchange surface. There is the following correlation between the heat flux Qɺ sc and the heat loss rate dQsc dα : dQsc dα Qɺ sc = , dα dt dQsc Qɺ sc = ω dα (9) where ω – engine angular velocity. Using the eq. (8) in formula (9), the heat loss rate can be described: dQsc 1 = A(α ) α sc [T (α ) − Tsc ] ω dα (10) and after integration the eq. (10) in range of combustion period it is possible to determine the heat transfer coefficient based on heat losses: Qsc = 1 ω αk ∫ α sc αp A(α ) [ T (α ) − Tsc ] dα (11) Finally using eq. (10) and eq. (11), the mean value of heat transfer coefficient during combustion process is possible to calculate using following equation: α sc = αk ω Qsc (12) ∫ A(α ) [ T (α ) − Tsc ] dα αp where α sc – mean value of heat transfer coefficient taking into account convection and radiation. 76 G. Conclusions The results obtained using Woschni equation and proposed algorithm based on cylinder pressure function are qualitatively comparable (if the radiation is taken into account) but mainly for stoichiometric mixture and optimal ignition timing (for MBT – maximum brake torque). The highest differences in values obtained for used equations (Woschni and Nusselt) exceed 300% comparing to experimental results (using heat release algorithm proposed in this paper) and these differences are observed for lean mixtures and higher ignition timing. The heat transfer from the combustion products occurs by convection and radiation, when the value of the heat transfer coefficient obtained by Woschni and Nusselt equation includes convection only. It is one of the reason which leads to the high difference (for much operating points of ICE) in obtained results. Presented in this paper algorithm involves all major physicochemical phenomena occurring in the system during combustion process. These phenomena have a significant impact on obtained results. Finally, regarding to it, the presented algorithm should bring more realistic values than the universal equations. Based on the results of investigations, the influence of selected cutting parameters on the machined surface quality was determined. Mathematical models based on analysis of variance (ANOVA), allowing to estimate the surface quality in the cutting process were proposed. Keywords: drilling, tool wear, surface quality, laminated chipboard 1. Introduction During drilling, there is a delamination of the laminate around the hole. The quality of the cut surface is related to the machining conditions, parameters of the cutting tool geometry [1]. Many research works related to the effect of cutting parameters (such as cutting speed, feed rate) on the quality of the machined surface around the hole were carried out. A speed and feed rate has a significant influence on the delamination [2, 6]. It was also found that higher rotational speed reduces the tendency of delamination. Gaitonde and Karnik [3] determined the effect of processing conditions on delamination factor Fd and they found that the feed rate and spindle speed were the most important factors in minimizing Fd both the entrance and exit of drilling holes in the MDF. Palanikumar and Prakash [4] showed that the size delamination during drilling MDF board can be reduced by using a low feed rate. Tsao [5] found that the feed rate and spindle speed are the dominant cutting parameters which influence the delamination. 2. Material and methods The experiments were performed on pre-laminated particle board (PB) 8% moisture containing and density of 670 kg/m3, with the thickness of 12 mm using Faba HW drills with diameter of 10 mm on Buselatto JET 130 CNC verti1 Autor do korespondencji/corresponding author: Krzysztof Szwajka, Rzeszow University of Technology, 4 Kwiatkowskiego Street, 37-450 Stalowa Wola, Poland, tel.: (15) 8448219, e-mail: [email protected] 82 K. The properties of tested PB composites are as follow: Rm = 0.43 MPa, E = 2.45 GPa. Processing parameters of the tests were: feed rate – 0.2; 0.25 and 0.3 mm/rev; cutting speed – 125-377 m/min. Tests were performed until the maximum value of indicator of tool wear was found. Durability experiments consist of repetitive operations. In each test the 252 holes were drilled. Eighteen tests of the tool life investigation were carried out. Fig. 1. The quality of the machined surface for new (top) and the wear (bottom) tools 3. Measurements of delamination In studies as a tool wear indicator VBmax = 0.2 mm was adopted. The measurement of tool wear was performed on the Mitutoyo TM microscope (fig. 2.) with dropped digital camera eyepiece with a resolution of 600 dpi, which allows for image archiving on a personal computer. Fig. 2. Measurement of tool wear Surface roughness after drilling of laminated chipboard 83 To determine the quality of the surface around the hole in the study it was decided to adopt the two most commonly used indicators: the maximum radius Rmax of the laminate and torn surface area of the laminate A. The two ratios were determined at the entrance of the tool into the material workpiece. In this way two indicators: Awej, Rwej were determined. To determine the accepted indicators recorded images were processed in the LabView environment. 4. The test results Figure 3. presents the results of the study, in which, with the help of ANOVA delamination area of the laminate at the entrance of the drill into the material (Awej) and the maximum radius of delamination of laminate at the entrance of the drill into the material (Rwej), using three different feed rates (f ), five cutting speeds (vc) and four values of tool wear (VBmax) were analyzed. In order to determine the effect of tool wear on the cutting force and torque ranges of cutting tool wear was adopted as the independent variable Fi. The ranges of the independent variables (Fi) used in the analysis of results are as follow: F1 = 0-0.095; F2 = 0.10-0.15 and F3 = 0.155-0.200. For the present experiment, ANOVA analysis was conducted in STATISTICA program, which allows to evaluate the significance of the impact of three factors on the course of the controlled experiment. In this work the level of significance was p = 0.05. The results of analysis (fig. 4.) reject the hypothesis about the lack of impact of factor VBmax on the area of delamination of laminate (Awej). So, it can be noted that the value of tool wear significantly affects the process of laminate delamination, using as an indicator of measurement (to assess the delamination magnitude) – delamination area of the laminate (Awej). Similar conclusions can be drawn in relation to the effect of cutting speed (vc). At the significance level the effect of cutting speed on the torn area of the laminate was also noticed. While the impact of the feed rate (f ) is statistically insignificant. Finally, the change of the value of cutting speed and wear significantly affects the area of the laminate delamination (Awej), while a change in the feed rate has no significant effect. There was also observed a statistically The results of analysis presented in the fig. 4. reject the hypothesis about the lack of influence of VBmax and f on the maximum radius of delamination (Rwej). It can be noted that the values of tool wear and feed rate significantly affect the process of delamination, using as an indicator of measurement (to assess the magnitude of delamination) – maximum radius of delamination (Rwej). Real and estimated values of the Awej and Rwej The study presents an estimate of the maximum radius of delamination (Rwej) and the area of the delamination (Awej) using linear regression: xF Awej = CF ⋅ VBmax ⋅f yF xM Rwej = CM ⋅ VBmax ⋅f yM ⋅ vczF ⋅ vczM (1) (2) where: CF, CM – constants dependent on the processing conditions determined experimentally, xF, xM – exponents characterizing influence of tool wear VBmax, yF, yM – exponents characterizing influence of feed rate f, zF, zM – exponents characterizing influence of cutting speed vc. Surface roughness after drilling of laminated chipboard 87 This resulted in dependence described by eqs. (3) and (4): Awej = 80.75 + 50.27 ⋅VBmax − 0.008 ⋅ vc (3) Rwej = 5.22 + 3.83 ⋅VBmax + 0.35 ⋅ f (4) To verify the eqs. (3) and (4) a comparative analysis between the actual values, obtained in the study, and the estimated values was carried out, on the basis of these relationships. The results of this analysis are shown in fig. 5. 5. Conclusions Based on the results of analysis and eqs. (3) and (4) it can be seen that the maximum radius of delamination (Rwej) strongly depends on the tool wear and feed rates. The surface area of delamination (Awej) depends on the tools wear and cutting speeds. Mathematical models have been proposed, using ANOVA, to assess the quality of the machined surface in the test cutting process. Dokonano analizy przebiegów czasowych zmian zawartości NO oraz CO2 i O2 w spalinach w trakcie utleniania paliwa oraz określono warunki sprzyjające redukcji zawartości NO w gazach dolotowych. Wyniki badań oznaczania zawartości azotu w próbkach popiołu po spaleniu wykazały śladowe zawartości N (w przypadku wszystkich badanych próbek zawartość azotu <0,01%), potwierdzając, Ŝe podczas spalania azot zawarty w węglu przechodzi w całości do fazy gazowej. 2. Badania konwersji azotu paliwowego Badania prowadzono na specjalnie zaadaptowanym stanowisku laboratoryjnym (rys. 1.) w wybranych temperaturach: 750, 850 oraz 950°C dla syntetycznych spalin skomponowanych z róŜnych udziałów CO2 (10, 20 i 50%), O2 (10, 20 i 30%), NO (100, 200 i 300 ppm), argonu oraz przegrzanej pary wodnej w ilości 15% obj. Skład spalin syntetycznych odpowiadał warunkom rzeczywistym występującym w przedpalenisku cyklonowym [1-3]. Rys. 1. Schemat stanowiska laboratoryjnego Fig. 1. Schematic of laboratory stand Tworzenie i redukcja tlenku azotu w warunkach oxyspalania 91 Organizacja przepływu na stanowisku laboratoryjnym umoŜliwiała niezakłóconą przepływem gazów obserwację próbki oraz pomiar spalin opuszczających układ. Zasadniczą część stanowiska stanowił piec, z umieszczoną centralnie rurą kwarcową o długości 1 m, otoczoną grzałką elektryczną i izolacją. Przygotowaną próbkę wprowadzano do rozgrzanego pieca, rejestrując zmiany składu spalin w trakcie procesu spalania. Po spaleniu pozostałość stałą wyjmowano z pieca i niezwłocznie umieszczano w eksykatorze do ostygnięcia. Następnie przy uŜyciu analizatora Leco CHNS Truspec oznaczano zawartość azotu w próbce. W badaniach wykorzystano 3 wybrane rodzaje paliwa (węgiel kamienny oraz grafit) o parametrach przedstawionych w tab. 1. i 2. Granulacja spalanego paliwa wynosiła poniŜej 100 µm. Wyniki zamieszczone w tab. W celu ustalenia i porównania wpływu spalania pozostałości koksowej (zawierającej znikomą ilość części lotnych) na tworzenie NO z azotu zawartego w fazie gazowej przeprowadzono równieŜ badania spalania grafitu. Tabela 1. Wyniki badań i ich analiza W ramach badań dokonano analizy wpływu temperatury oraz zawartości NO, O2, CO2 i pary wodnej w spalinach na proces tworzenia i redukcji NO podczas spalania wybranych próbek węgla i grafitu w warunkach zbliŜonych do oxyspalania w przedpalenisku cyklonowym. Zestawienie wybranych wyników badań przedstawiono na rys. 2-5. Wyniki te potwierdzają ponadto istotny wpływ rodzaju paliwa na poziom emisji NO. W przypadku spalania grafitu (rys. 2.), który właściwie nie zawiera części lotnych i azotu, emisja NO jest równa zeru, co potwierdza pośrednio, Ŝe w danych warunkach nie następuje tworzenie termicznych NO. Na podstawie danych pomiarowych dokonano obliczenia średniego względnego stopnia redukcji NO (∆NO), wykorzystując zaleŜność: ∆ NO = NO śr . pom − NOin NOin 100 [%] (1) gdzie: NOśr,pom – średnia zawartość NO w gazie podczas spalania, NOin – zawartość NO w gazie na wlocie do komory spalania. W przypadku braku pary wodnej w gazach wprowadzanych do komory spalania wzrost temperatury w zakresie 750-850°C pozytywnie wpływa na moŜliwość redukcji NO. Jedynie w przypadku węgla nr 1 w obu temperaturach (750 i 850°C) nie zaobserwowano obniŜenia zawartości NO w spalinach. Z kolei w przypadku węgla nr 2 oraz grafitu spalanie w temperaturze 850°C spowodowało ok. 2% redukcję NO. Degree of NO reduction in the gas vs. temperature in the combustion chamber and fuel type; 1 – coal no 1, 2 – coal no 2, 3 – graphite Wyniki dla węgla (nr 1 i nr 2) zestawione na rys. 4. wyraźnie wskazują, Ŝe dla 10% stęŜenia CO2 i 10% zawartości O2 w gazie stopień redukcji NO jest proporcjonalny do zawartości NO w gazie dolotowym. Odwrotną zaleŜność zaobserwowano w przypadku grafitu, dla którego wzrost zawartości NO ze 100 do 300 ppm spowodował ograniczenie średniego stopnia redukcji NO z ok. 6 do 4%. Zwiększenie zawartości CO do poziomu 50% spowodowało prawie 10% redukcję NO. W przypadku spalania węgla (paliwo nr 1 i nr 2) w atmosferze gazów zawierających przegrzaną parę wodną redukcja NO podczas testów prowadzonych w 950°C została zarejestrowana jedynie dla zwartości NO w gazach dolotowych wynoszącej 300 ppm. W odróŜnieniu od węgla, spalanie grafitu spowodowało niewielkie (o ok. 3%) ograniczenie emisji NO – pozytywny wpływ zarejestrowano zarówno przy zawartości NO w gazie wynoszącej 100 ppm, jak i 300 ppm. Wyniki badań przedstawione na rys. 5. i przeprowadzone w temperaturze 850°C dla zawartości NO w gazie dolotowym wynoszącej 300 ppm potwierdzają, Ŝe w odpowiednich warunkach jest moŜliwa redukcja stęŜenia NO w spalinach. NajwyŜsze wartości stopni redukcji obserwuje się w przypadku spalania węgla i w wysokich stęŜeniach CO2 w gazie – uzyskane podczas testów wartości dochodziły do 8%. Analiza wyników badań zawartości NO w spalinach wskazuje, Ŝe w zakresie temperatur 750-950°C w pewnych warunkach, determinowanych stęŜeniem CO2, NO oraz O2 w komorze spalania, jest moŜliwa wyraźna, dochodząca nawet do 8%, redukcja zawartości NO. FORMATION AND REDUCTION OF NITRIC OXIDE UNDER OXYCOMBUSTION CONDITIONS Summary The article presents the results of the investigation of the possibility to reduce NO in conditions similar to those characteristic for the oxycombustion process. Analysis of the waveforms of variation of the concentrations of NO, CO2, and O2 in fuel gas during fuel oxidation was carried out. Furthermore, the conditions that favour the reduction of No concentration in inlet gases were determined. It was found that in the temperature range of 750-950°C no thermal NO is formed during the combustion in air. However, the results obtained for the different gas composition indicated that under certain conditions it is possible to reduce up to 10% of the initial NO concentration in the inlet gas. The analysis of nitrogen content in the fuel and ash samples after combustion process showed that just trace content of N was found (in case of all tested samples the nitrogen content was under 0.04%), it is confirmed that during combustion the majority of nitrogen is transformed to the gas phase.
