ATTRACTIONS OF THE REGION
The Symposium will be in Kielce. According to the earliest historical sources the settlement of Kielce
was granted the town rights in 1260. Notwithstanding the Mongol raids, the town obtained selfgoverning rights under Magdeburg law in 1364. Since then Kielce was recognized as a bishop's
town. In the 11th and 12th centuries the vast part of the land south of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains
was given to the bishops of Cracow - the richest sovereigns in Poland at the time. In 1493 Cardinal
Fryderyk Jagiellończyk granted the town a coat of arms consisting of golden letters C.K. (Civitas
Kielcensis – community of Kielce) and a crown on a red background.
In modern times Kielce is the capital of the Świętokrzyskie Province located in the centre of Europe's
oldest mountains. The city is the only place on the Old Continent that has as many as five nature
reserves within its limits (Ślichowice, Kadzielnia, Biesak, Wietrznia) and one landscape reserve
(Karczówka). The biggest attractions of Kielce and its surroundings are:
 Cracow Bishops' Palace built in the years 1637-1644 on the initiative of Cracow Bishop Jakub
Zadzik. Classified as a top class monument - included in the zero group (in the former classification
of monuments). It is recognized as the most valuable of all preserved Polish palaces from the epoch
of the Vasa dynasty.
 Kadzielnia - strict geological reserve of an area of 0,6 ha established in 1962. It is formed of
Devonian limestone stromatoporoids and corals covered with marly limestone;
 Święty Krzyż (the Holy Cross Sanctuary) located on Łysa Góra, a symbol of the Świętokrzyskie
Mountains.The monastery erected on site of a pagan cult boasts the relics of wood from the Christ's
Cross kept in the Oleśnicki family's chapel;
 Jaskinia Raj (Paradise Cave) - the most beautiful karstic cave in Poland inscribed on the
UNESCO World Heritage List. It is characterized by richness and variety of calcite flowstone
formations. It is unique in the world for its dense concentration of stalactites.
