Maersk Line has signed a
contract with Korea's
DSME shipyard for ten
containerships of 18,000
teu with an option to buy
another 20. Each ship is
priced at $190M, for a total
investment of up to
$5.7Bn. Should the options
be exercised, this will be
the by far largest containership order ever. The new
ULCS will be delivered
from 2013 to 2015. They
will be known as Triple-E
or ‘EEE’ Class.
The ‘EEE’ Class ships will
be the largest containership ever built, and will be
the most energy efficient
container vessels (on a per
teu basis).

Maersk seals lead with 18,000 teu vessels order
Maersk has signalled its intention to remain the world’s leading container line,
with today’s confirmation of an order for ten 18,000 teu ships at Daewoo
(DSME). The deal propels the A. P. Møller-Maersk Group’s container ship orderbook from 317,000 teu to 497,000 teu, according to Alphaliner figures, with a
further 360,000 teu in the pipeline if the options for twenty additional units are
exercised. For the carrier which has been holding the title of largest carrier
since 1996, the move will seal its position at the number one spot with no immediate threat of being overtaken by any of its competitors.
Since its acquisition of P&O Nedlloyd in August 2005, Maersk’s market share
has been gradually eroded. Over the past five years, its market share has fallen
from a peak of 18.3% following the PONL acquisition to 14.5% currently. However, despite inaccurate reports that emerged last week and which claimed
that Maersk had lost its leading position to MSC, Alphaliner statistics show that
Maersk continues to retain its top ranking. The A. P. Møller-Maersk Group currently operates 2.18 Mteu, compared to MSC’s 1.92 Mteu. Even without the
consolidation of the group’s subsidiaries (Safmarine, MCC Transport and OACL
which operate a total of 215,000 teu), Maersk Line currently operates 1.96
Mteu on its own, which places it ahead of MSC’s operated capacity by 54,000
teu. The confusion over Maerk’s actual capacity is partly due to the company’s
penchant to under-declare the actual loading capacity of its largest ships.
