Please be generous in your support of the many good works of our Parish. St. Stanislaus depends upon the regular support of its membership and the generosity of those who visit here. Please look upon your financial gift or sacrifice as a way of giving praise to God along with the many from earlier generations who have worshiped and prayed here for over 135 years. There are Saints…..and there are Saints If your ears are still ringing from the glorious trumpets and fanfares and preludes and postludes of last weekend’s Masses commemorating St. Francis, then the concert you are invited to hear this Sunday afternoon will illuminate another side of this saint. The “Rose Ensemble” will show you other sides of the same Francis — the person who spoke to birds and the person who bore the wounds of the crucified Master. You will hear about a person who transformed himself from one who lived for the false pleasures of the world into one who thrived on the true pleasures of truth. Had you met this man during your own walk through life would you have thought for a moment him to be a Saint or a madman? We often look at those images of Saints which share our worship space and we wonder: were these people sane or what? Were they intoxicated with some divine nectar or were they starved for a gift never attainable? Did they want to be Saints or did they want to become Saints? Did any of those thoughts even ever cross their minds? When Francis gave up the privileged (in worldly terms) life and assumed the position of the antithesis did he ever consider the tragedy of folly he escaped in exchange for the folly of the Cross? Each morning we hear those same birds sing as did Francis. Each moment we share the same wounds inherited at Baptism. Inebriated by a new life in Christ we each look into the sun and see beyond to the stars in the darkness as the liberation afforded us by the risen Jesus conquered evil and broke the chains of the enslavement to the obvious. We do walk with Saints each day as we walk with others becoming Saints. The shadows of Jesus guide our weary eyes through the dark night into the pastures of life. There we drink of His passion and eat at His banquet and see the poverty of sin and the richness of the Gospel, all options for our free wills. Do you want to become a Saint? What did you do today to gain that distinction? Do you want your friends to be Saints? How did you help them along that path this very day? Do you want your enemies to become Saints? What did you do moments before you lifted this bulletin to your eyes to help them move in the direction of the Gospel of Life? Do you mind giving up things that hold you back from that dream? Do you want to become a Saint? There are Saints...and there are Saints. May the life and deeds of Francis aided by the experience found in today’s musical event guide your spirit to join the ranks of both with quiet joy. PASTORAL MESSAGE The Look of Jesus… In the gospel reading for today, St. Mark relates the encounter of Jesus and the young rich man, who ran up to Jesus and said, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus replied that the obserance of the Ten Commandments was required. The young man boasted that he observed all the Commandments. “And Jesus looking upon him, loved him.” Jesus recognized the purity this man’s heart and the great potential for generosity within it. So, Jesus invited the young man to follow him, setting aside and forsaking all that he possessed. What was the look of Jesus as the young rejected his offer? Consider the look of Jesus when invited Simon to follow him; he addressed him, Cephas, rock, and his life would never be the same. Jesus had looks that were at times cheerful and affirming; at other times, revealing pain and sorrow, especially, when dealing with the stubborn and unbelieving Pharisees. How compassionate was his look when he encountered the widow of Naim; how inviting was his look to Matthew the tax collector; how persuasive his look to Zacchaeus for change of heart; how loving and tender his look at the poor widow that gave all she had—two pennies — to the Temple. This look of Jesus brings the soul of a person face to face with God. Just think how relieved the woman caught in adultery must have been—she changed her life. Imagine Jesus looking at Peter after his three denials. The look of Jesus continues today. His look at each of us can draw us to repent, to forgive, to thank, to motivate us to do more than simply observing the Ten Commandments, to welcome others, to feed and cloth the poor, to inspire us to say to Jesus, “I’m sorry!” Imagine the look on the face of Jesus every weekend when so many, like the young man in the gospel, reject his invitation to forsake—not all their possessions — but merely to set aside one hour to offer praise and thanks to Jesus for our redemption. Imagine what that young rich man in today’s must feel for all eternity his decision to prefer the things of earth than the blessings of the kingdom. The same will hold true for all who have set aside this invitation of Jesus to hear his Word and receive his Body and Blood at weekend Mass. Speaking of Youth, here is what Ge neral Douglas MacArthur has to say: “Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind. Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years; people grow old only by deserting their ideals. Worry, doubt, selfdistrust, fear and despair, these are the long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust. You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your hope, as old as your despair. So long as your heart receives messages of beauty, cheer, courage, grandeur and power fro m the earth, from people, from the infinite, so long are you young. When the heart is covered with the snow of materialism and pessimism and the ice of cynicism, then I am grown old indeed, and may you, Lord, have mercy on my soul.” These words probably apply very well to the young man in today’s gospel. What does the look of Christ mean to me? What will be the look of his face when we encounter in eternity? Fr. Ewangelista odnotowal: Faryzeusze przystapili do Jezusa i chcac Go wystawic na próbe, pytali Go, czy wolno mezowi oddalic zone? (Mk 10, 2). (Mk 10, 6-9). Nauka ta byla trudna do zrozumienia i przyjecia takze dla samych Apostolów, którzy spisali slowa Pana. U sw. On nigdy nie wymaga rzeczy niemozliwych. Placyd ST. STANISLAUS CLEVELAND, OHIO Festival Fun! MOZART, MENDELSSOHN AND HATZIS….CityMusic Cleveland Next Saturday at 7:30 PM we will enjoy the return of CityMusic Cleveland in this their 6th successful year of high quality performances in venues throughout the region. These free events always attract wonderful crowds (more so than the crowds attending our services!) and offer our own parishioners a chance to evangelize by sharing both their faith as well as their knowledge of our shrine Church with the hundreds of visitors who are forever full of questions. This first concert will feature a world renowned string quartet, ‘The Pacifica Quartet,’ performing in two pieces with the CityMusic Cleveland orchestra. Those two works will include a Mozart Divertimento and a newly commissioned work by Christos Hatzis, a Toronto based composer, entitled ‘Redemption,’ also scored for quartet and chamber orchestra. The other work on the program will be a suite from Mendelssohn’s ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream!’ So, if you were married here at St. Stanislaus, chances are you will definitely recognize the movement from this work generally known as the ‘Wedding March’...except this time you will be treated to hearing it performed by the full orchestra!!! Relive the time when you walked down the aisle together, hand in hand, full of your own dreams with your spouse….and perhaps sneak in a little kiss during the music! CONGRATULATIONS FESTIVAL WINNERS! Slavic Village parishes share this responsibility with each other. The next class will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Sunday, November 1, at 1:30 PM. Please call at 341-2734 if you plan to attend. ST. STANS HISTORICAL FACT by Rob Jagelewski. In this age of parish clustering it is a time to remember some of our past relationships with area parishes. Father Anton Kolaszewski, who built our present church in 1891 was responsible for two other area parishes. These parishes are Immaculate Heart of Mary and Sacred Heart of Jesus. The recently closed St. Hyacinth Parish was a daughter parish of this community. For a time the Community of St. John Nepomucene utilized our chapel for their Sunday services before they built their own church on Fleet Avenue. The former Transfiguration Parish on Broadway Avenue also used our chapel for services after their church was damaged by a fire. Holy Name is the oldest parish in the neighborhood. Many of our Polish immigrant community worshiped at Holy Name before the Community of St. Stanislaus was formed. Many years before there was a term called “clustering,” the churches of Slavic Village clustered by themselves to share ministry to their own parishes and to their close communities. The parishes in this area are all intertwined by their closeness and their shared histories.
