The Synod on the Family has been deliberating over the questions of
marriage, divorce, remarriage, the role of women and gays. The synod
recognizes the fact that people seek to enter a second marriage and many
are cohabitating for years before they get married or some never seem to
“formally tie the knot” either civilly or in church.
The questions have been on the table for years. So the synod is simply
recognizing the “facts on the ground” and asking the Holy Spirit to guide
the church which is made up of very wide and divergent cultures which
share many of the same hopes, fears and concerns. How do we deal with
these issues as well as those who experience domestic violence and sexual abuse?
In Philadelphia, Pope Francis said that the synod on the family is an opportunity for the Church to
reflect on how best to offer care, protection and support for families. That support is needed in the
good times and in the bad. Lay catholics, like the bishops who gathered in Rome, would not want
to see a change in church teaching, in the indissolubility of marriage. But they did look at the ways
the church perhaps can and should accompany them when they face difficulties, such as marriage
breakdowns, divorce and remarriage.
Some feel that a more compassionate approach will harm the Church. But years of maintaining the
status quo in the last two pontificates has not stemmed the decline of the Church in the West.
Catholics voted with their feet. More of them may still do so?
These questions are many and complex – years are need to untangle them all but I believe the Holy
Spirit is telling us that mercy, compassion and love will never fail us.
See www.sjbrbeuf.org for the latest in the parish and in the Church Universal. Register on line or
give electronically – follow the prompts.

PERPETUAL
EUCHARISTIC
ADORATION
Christ's followers were
skeptical when He preached
the reality of His Body and
Blood as food and drink. St.
John said, "many of His disciples withdrew and no longer
went about with Him."
Seeing this, Jesus asked the Twelve, "Do
you also want to leave me?" Simon Peter did
not understand any more than those who left
Christ, but his loyalty was more firm. "Lord,"
he said, "to whom shall we go? You have
the words of eternal life."
We have the "Word of Eternal Life"
right here with us day and night in our
Adoration Chapel. Do you have something
you want to ask Him? There are several
hours needing adorers. Please pick one for
your personal hour with Him.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
This New Year’s Eve, at the turning of the
year, you may catch a glimpse of the old year, a
cartoon figure of a hunched old man with a sickle,
Father Time. Where else but in this column could
you learn that this is in fact a pope? December 31
was in the old calendar the feast of St. Sylvester.
Legend says that Sylvester healed the Emperor
Constantine of leprosy, and presided at the liturgy
of baptism for the grateful emperor. In 314, he
was chosen pope, and it fell to him to organize the
peacetime church, free at last from persecution.
He founded the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of
the Diocese of Rome.
In northern Europe “Sylvester Night” is a time
of great parties with eating, dancing, and singing—recalling perhaps the joy of the church in the
fresh air of Sylvester’s papacy. In Poland, there
was great fear as the year 1000 approached that an
immense dragon would devour the earth and set
fire to the heavens. The people prayed earnestly to
St. Sylvester, trusting that the saint would not permit such suffering on his feast day. They’ve been
celebrating ever since!
Many New Year’s customs have pagan roots,
like the British “First Footer” tradition. The idea is
that the first person setting foot into your house in
the new year determines the luck for the year
ahead. The ideal first footer was not a bit like old
Pope Sylvester, but rather a tall, dark-haired man
carrying the right gift. A handsome first footer
meant the year ahead would be pleasant, and if he
carried bread or a shovel of coal there would be
food and warmth in the future. Who will be your
household’s first footer?
We Welcome the Children Baptized in November

What a beautiful way to remember your loved ones, living or deceased, with a donation in the amount of $10
toward the purchase of flowers which will grace the church environment during the Christmas Season.
Only one name or one family name may be listed per donation, i.e. Mr. John Smith or John Smith Family. Please
place this completed form along with your donation, in an envelope marked Christmas Flowers. You may then place
it in the offering basket or return it to the parish.
All memorials must be received by December 31. They will be published in the bulletin in January. Please
note that the names of those memorialized will be printed, not the donor’s name.

Joy In Jesus” Sunday Program
The pre-school children in the “Joy in Jesus”
Sunday program celebrated their Baptism with a
holy water blessing. They learned the meaning of
Advent and waiting for the birthday of Jesus by
making an Advent wreath using fresh evergreen
branches. The candles were lit for each week of
Advent. For Christmas, they made ornaments and
decorated a tree.
The “Joy in Jesus” program is open to children
ages 3 1/2 through kindergarten. Classes are held in
the school during the 10:45 AM Mass each Sunday.
The second half of this year’s session will begin on
January 3rd. There are several openings in the
classes at this time. For information, call Charlotte
Lindquist, 847-470-1434.

When life and
family are not
treasured and preserved in a society, collapse on all fronts is inevitable. Sadly, this statement applies to America today. Pray for
an end to the culture of death.
Let us continue to pray daily:
“Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love
you very much. I beg you to
spare the life of the unborn baby
that I have spiritually adopted who
is in danger of
abortion.”

Drodzy Parafianie,
Ostatni Synod o Rodzinie koncentrował się wokół kwestii
małżeństwa, rozwodu, ponownego małżeństwa, roli kobiet i osób o
orientacji homoseksualnej.
wiele z tych samych nadziei, lęków i obaw. Jak poradzić sobie z tymi problemami, a także tych,
którzy doświadczają przemocy domowej i wykorzystywania seksualnego?
