January 24, 2016 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Memories of the Future The Future is as Bright as the Promises of God St. John Brebeuf Parish 8307 N. Harlem Ave., Niles, IL 60714 847-966-8145 www.sjbrebeuf.org Page 1 Page 2 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2016 Dear Parishioners, I recently came across an article written by Monsignor Dennis Lyle, entitled “Weakness and Mercy” in a priest news letter that I found timely. Perhaps you remember the Lenten Mission he gave focusing on Pope Francis? This is his introductory paragraph that is the most appropriate for you. “Recently, I visited the Secretary of State Office in order to renew my driver's license. While waiting for the clerk to call my number, I noticed how people in the room represented a cross section of local demographics. You have seen them: the overweight lady smoking a cigarette outside the facility; the impatient clerk attempting to explain the instructions to someone for whom English was a second language; the teenage girl who is so engaged in her iPad that she does not hear when her name is called. The first temptation is to consider that I am not a member of this ragtag group of characters. But the truth is that I am as much a member of the group as all others. Yes, these folks are my brothers and sisters. Each one is unique; each one has talents and shortcomings; each one is a child of God. And I know that if I were to speak with them, I would discover a person with a rich history and family, with concerns and worries, with dreams and aspirations. It is easy to focus on and make quick judgment about persons based on the clothes they wear or the number of piercings or the manner in which they interact with others. It takes some intentional thinking to acknowledge that I look as odd to others as they do to me and that God looks upon us as one family. This temptation to separate ourselves from others exists among priests as well, especially when we focus on weaknesses and shortcomings. Yet, the truth is that weaknesses and imperfections are what we share with one another and the rest of humanity. I say this not to make excuses for poor choices but I believe it is a profound theological and vocational truth.” Amen! Father Mike Meany We Welcome the Children Baptized in December Adam Wesley, son of Andrew and Katarzyna (Bartnik) Kenning Neil Benjamin, son of Michael and Gina (Collins) Kurcz Emma Grace, daughter of Ryszard and Schuyler (Polmateer) Wozniak READINGS FOR JANUARY 31 First Reading — God appoints Jeremiah as prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19). Gospel — When Jesus claims his salvific mission is for all people, not just the Jews, he is expelled by the enraged members of the Nazarean synagogue (Luke 4:21-30). PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Christ's followers were skeptical when He preached the reality of His Body and Blood as food and drink. St. John said, "many of His disciples withdrew and no longer went about with Him." Seeing this, Jesus asked the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave me?" Simon Peter did not understand any more than those who left Christ, but his loyalty was more firm. "Lord," he said, "to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." We have the "Word of Eternal Life" right here with us day and night in our Adoration Chapel. Do you have something you want to ask Him? There are several hours needing adorers. Please pick one for your personal hour with Him. This ministry is crucial to the daily functioning of the church, and today we have a special need for sacristans for the funeral masses held on weekdays and Saturdays. You might consider working in pairs with another sacristan to make the time more fun. What does the Sacristan do? Many things need to be done before liturgy can take place. Bread and wine must be in place, vessels and vestments available, books set out and candles lit, guiding the younger altar servers into place, occasionally reading from Scripture. The ordained ministers often do some of this work, but sometimes they need an extra hand. Don’t worry - you won’t need to take care of everything: the lectors, altar servers, ushers and Eucharistic ministers have responsibilities for making ready the materials that they themselves use. We invite you to consider this ministry of holy duties, serving the liturgy and serving the entire community. Call the office and ask for Barbara or leave your phone number. 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal “The Hands of God’s Mercy” Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. Pope Francis has called all of us to participate in a Jubilee Year of Mercy. The ACA theme, “The Hand of God’s Mercy,” was selected to remind us that our contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal enable the funded ministries and services to share God’s mercy with many others in our parish and Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. After our parish goal is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. Page 6 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2016 January 24, 2016 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 7 We are in need of several adults who would like to share their faith with the children at Mass. A catechist has a very important ministry in the church as a teacher of our children. Please give prayerful thought to this volunteer opportunity. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word ministry will continue until June of 2016. We welcome all of our children ages 6-10 to participate in their own Liturgy of the Word! If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Maciek Karaban at 847-966-3269. Thank you!!! SJB YOUTH MINISTRY ANNOUNCEMENTS JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016 Children’s Liturgy of the Word Children's Liturgy of the Word is a worship experience geared especially for children ages 6-10. It is a special opportunity for children to understand and appreciate Scripture at Sunday Mass. Basically, after the opening prayer (Collect) at the 10:45 a.m. English Mass and 12:30 p.m. Polish Mass, the children are invited to come forward with two adult Catechists and go to the Music Room in Church to participate in their own Liturgy of the Word. Children’s Liturgy of the Word offers an experience for children to hear Scripture in words they understand and to share their own understanding of God's word. The children return to the main parish assembly for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We warmly invite all children in the parish to participate in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word. 1. The innocent blood of our preborn is polluting our land through decriminalized abortion. Let us continue to pray daily: “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” January 24: Third Sunday in Ordinary time In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus reads the words of scripture: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.” Have you considered answering the call to “bring glad tidings to the poor” by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Amen! Ks. Mike Meany Stowarzyszenie Św.
