BLESSED TRINITY REGIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL Ms. Linda Milewski Principal 215-338-9797 is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great "secret" revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes: he was doing it for the glory of God--not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus "humbled" himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today's healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God's reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today. UNCLEAN OR UNCLEANSED? A common thread that runs through religions and religious communities throughout the course of human history is our tendency to build boundaries or barriers around ourselves--or to exclude certain people--because they are "unclean" and they pose some real or perceived threat. The reading from Leviticus illustrates a very pragmatic exclusion of the unclean for the sake of preserving the physical health of the community. Corinthians, however, shows a different kind of exclusion being practiced: Jewish Christians and Greek Christians excluding one another from the church of God for no practical purpose. And it is this kind of thoughtless, unexamined exclusion that Paul sees as useless in the face of what Christians are called to be as the Body of Christ: those who seek the benefit of many, that they might be saved, imitating Christ himself. Throughout our own history, our Roman Catholic Church has practiced both kinds of exclusion, sometimes for the genuine preservation of the Church. Sadly, however, there are also many examples of times when we have thoughtlessly excluded others, failing to imitate Christ. 2 FEBRUARY 15, 2015 SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MONDAY – FEB. 16th 8:00(E) For the people of St. John Cantius TUESDAY – FEB. 17th 8:00(P) Bazyly Eugenia Bazylia, Michal i Maria Mazurek req. CONTINUED FROM COVER PAGE THE CLEANSING POWER OF LOVE The leper in today's Gospel had perhaps sung the psalmist's words "I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation." And so he turns to Jesus, and Jesus allows himself to come face to face with this unclean outcast. We note carefully that Jesus, in response to the leper's request for healing, states that it is his will, and therefore the will of his Father, also moved with pity and love, to cleanse and heal the leper. (In a curious twist of fate, the joy of the leper, once the outcast, makes it impossible for Jesus to enter the community openly.) If we are to continue to live out our prayer "thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven," we must also come face to face with those cast out, cast aside, called "unclean" by our communities. Like Paul, we must seek to discover if their uncleanliness is real or only a way for us to feel smug or better about ourselves to the detriment of God's glory. Like Jesus, we must, moved with pity and love, reach out to be the cleansing and welcoming touch they need. COMPASSION AND GENEROSITY Let your heart feel for the afflictions and distress of everyone, and let your hand give in proportion to your purse. —George Washington Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 15, 2015 Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 4 We thank everyone who came to the Spaghetti Dinner last Saturday evening. The event was a big success. Our Poor Man’s Supper is our next event that will take place on Saturday evening, February 28th, at 6:00 P.M., in our auditorium. The menu is homemade vegetable soup, bread and dessert. Tickets are $5.00 and are available in the back of Chapel and at the Rectory. A family movie (still to be determined) will be shown after the support. We begin the Season of Lent this week. Ashes will be distributed at all the Masses in Chapel on this Wednesday - Ash Wednesday - only after the Gospel. Ashes cannot be given after Mass. The Mass schedule is as follows for Ash Wednesday: 8:00 A.M. (English) and 7:00 P.M. (Polish) in Church and 7:00 P.M. (English) in Chapel. Distribution of ashes will also take place at 1:00 and 4:00 P.M. during a service of the Liturgy of the Word – also in the Chapel. Ashes are a reminder to us of our mortality and eventual death - and also of our need to repent and change our lives to live in union with Jesus. When the ashes are placed on your forehead, resolve to do something positive during Lent, that is, something that will improve your spiritual life and make a lasting impression on all your actions. These Forty Days will go by quickly - let's not waste them. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons over fourteen years of age are gravely obliged to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. All persons over eighteen years of age and up to the beginning of their sixtieth year are gravely obliged to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. There will be an Evening Mass during Lent celebrated at 7:00 (Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Polish; Tuesday and Thursday in English) to give those who work an opportunity to attend Mass before they get home. We encourage everyone to attend Mass and to receive Holy Communion daily, to use frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, to attend our parish Lenten devotions (Stations of the Cross every Thursday in English and Friday in Polish at 6:30 P.M.) Gorzkie Zale will be sung on Sunday morning at 11:00 after the 10:00 Mass. We also hope that you will participate in Operation Rice Bowl that has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese, as well as throughout the world. Attached to this Bulletin is a Rice Bowl. Place your Lenten sacrifices in it during this Penitential Season and return it on Palm Sunday. Let us make it our pledge to pray for our parish during this season that God will bless all our parishioners and all our sick that we will all come to know our Lord better. What to give up for Lent is something we all ponder at this time. “Sacrifice” is the key word here. Jesus showed us that sacrifice is at the core of authentic love. Some areas that many Catholics focus on in their Lenten sacrifice: A type of food Television or internet time Unnecessary spending or shopping Alcohol or caffeine We could also go beyond Sunday Mass and use Lent as a chance to broaden and deepen our spiritual lives by: Attending Mass during the week Read and pray with the Mass Readings that are published in this bulletin every week Pray the Stations of the Cross, either individually or in our parish Pray the Rosary Spend time in Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesday in our Chapel Do some spiritual reading Participate wholeheartedly in the Rice Bowl Program These are only suggestions; there is so much each of us can do. I pray that we all have a beneficial 40 days of preparation for Easter. The Lenten Retreat in the Polish Language will begin this Wednesday, February 18th , and will continue on Friday and Saturday at 7:00 PM. Evening Mass and homily on Thursday will be in Polish and will be celebrated and given by Fr. Zbigniew Majcher who has celebrated Mass here many times. The Retreat will be in the Chapel. The Stations of the Cross in English will begin at 6:30 PM on Thursday before the Retreat begins. PLEASE NOTE: Mass will be in Polish this Thursday. The Lenten Retreat in English will begin on Sunday, February 22nd, at 7:00 P.M. in the Chapel and will continue on Monday and Tuesday evenings. PLEASE NOTE: There will be MASS in Polish these two nights of the Retreat at 7:00 P.M. in the Church. The Retreat will be given by Fr. Dominic Rossi, a Norbertine priest, who is the founder of the Bethesda Project that serves the homeless in our Archdiocese. Father Rossi will speak at all the English Masses on Saturday and Sunday, February 21st and 22nd. The Retreat will be given in the Chapel. Please make plans to attend this special time as we begin Lent. The Rectory Office will be closed on Monday, February 16th, for the Presidents Day Holiday. 5 Dziękujemy wszystkim, którzy przyszli na nasza kolacje, „Spaghetti Dinner” w ostatnia sobotę. Kolacja była wielkim sukcesem. Następne wydarzenie, „Poor Man’s Supper” odbędzie się w sobotę, 28 Lutego o 18:00. Gorąca zupa jarzynowa z chlebem, woda, i mały deser. Popiół przypomina nam o naszej śmiertelności i ostateczną śmierć - a także o naszej potrzebie pokuty i pilnować nasze życie, aby żyć w jedności z Jezusem. Zachęcamy wszystkich, aby uczestniczyć we Mszy świętej i Komunii św. codziennie, często korzystać z sakramentu pokuty, do podjęcia duchowej lektury, do wzięcia udziału w naszych parafialnych Nabożeństw Wielkopostnych (Droga Krzyżowa w każdy czwartek w języku angielskim i piątek w języku polskim o 18: 30) Gorzkie żale będą śpiewane w niedzielę rano o godzinie 11: 00 po angielskiej Mszy o 10:00. Trzeba zamieścić wielkopostnych wyrzeczeń w niej w tym sezonie pokutnym i zwrócić go w Niedzielę Palmową. Zbigniewa Majcher, dyrektora Rekolekcji.
