„Sztuka jest pośrednikiem niewyrażalnego.“ J. W. von Goethe Drodzy Czytelnicy! Niniejszą publikacją pragniemy przedstawić Państwu projekt zatytułowany „My, dzieci Europy!” To interdyscyplinarny program, u którego podstaw leży rożnorodność metod artystycznych i pedagogicznych prowadzących do żywiołowej współpracy wszystkich osób zaangażowanych w projekt. Dzieci i młodzież biorą udział we wszystkich warsztatach artystycznych. Pokonują ją sięgając do języka angielskiego. „My, dzieci Europy!“ nawiązuje do zagadnień wspólnej Europy: Czym jest Europa? Was ist Europa? Viel Freude beim Lesen! Elli Kosek Projektkoordinatorin The mediator of the inexpressible is the work of art. J. W. von Goethe Dear Readers, the project we would like to introduce to you by this publication is entitled „We are Europe’s children!”. It is an interdisciplinary educational project, which fundamentally employs artistic methods and educational approaches. Considering the term „education” from an isolated perspective one discovers various definitions. Public debates about educational opportunities and the well-known Pisa study define the term “education” as a form of schooling or vocational training. However in everyday speech “education” is understood to be the accumulation of a solid amount of knowledge. However is such a concept of “education” sufficient in postmodern times - in times determined by a wide diversity of perspectives, fast moving developments and constant changes that impact the lives of our children on a daily basis? Modern educational theories have long shifted away from these socially engraved terms on education. The individual - one’s relation to oneself and to one’s environment - takes centre stage in today’s educational discourses as well as in the necessity of learning through self-awareness. The project „We are Europe’s children!” follows this modern approach. Its goal is to address and encourage the mind, imagination and sensual perception of the youngsters. The significant project elements - sociocultural diversity and art - serve this purpose. The first phase of the project addresses children aged 8-12 years and the second phase addresses children between 12 and 15 years. The age classifications allow the use of age-specific offers and methods. For children and youngsters the program provides learning opportunities through playing and creative activities, free of any kind of grading. Also it takes place during the summer holidays, which is a time away from school pressures children are usually exposed to. The sociocultural aspect of the project is simultaneously its most important element. Alongside participants from Germany and Poland there will also be participants from other parts of Europe. Thereby partnerships with institutions from countries that are either new members of the European Union or aspire to the membership in the future are an important focus. This is because these institutions are less likely to have much experience in the area of informal education in the international context. Promoting European values in this framework appears particularly favourable. The encounter with other cultures, languages and perceptions enables children to alternate perspectives by spending time together and communicating with each other. This can counteract stereotypes and prejudice, and encourages the development of an open and tolerant perspective on life. It is not solely the national origins of the participants that contribute to the diversity of this project. Yet another very important aspect is the integration of children and youngsters from diverse social backgrounds. Hence partners of the project are also orphanages next to cultural institutions and schools, inter alia schools with artistic profiles. This mix of socio-cultural differences coexistent with similarities such as personal interests and hobbies allows participants to learn from each other, while also providing an opportunity to reflect on this accordingly. The project „We are Europe’s children!” invites to a nine-day stay in the International Youth Meeting Centre in Krzyżowa. The program involves many activities such as games, sports, language activities, excursions and other shared leisure activities. Alongside those, there are art workshops that take centre stage including manual art, ceramics, theatre and dance. Based on a rotating system, all children and youngsters participate in every single workshop at one stage or another. At the same time, participants are divided into sub-groups that are nationally mixed. Although national diversity may sometimes create language barriers, it rarely is an obstacle to making contact and integration. Communication amongst participants is supported by both the art workshops themselves as well as the English language, which often provides an alternative means of communication whereby it is often observed to evoke a subconscious learning process of the language itself. Through joint artistic activities participants are being introduced to new forms of expression and communication, which can be practiced and hence promote social abilities. As the project title implies, the summer project deals with European issues. What is Europe? What kind of opportunities does it provide and what does it mean to actively participate in its formation? These are questions that will be dealt with in an age-based manner. The particular subjects thereby will be based on assignments of the respective European year. Whilst those subjects will be prepared in single workshop units, the reflection takes place during the actual artistic workshops themselves. All workshops are led and supervised by experienced artists and pedagogues, who accompany the initiated learning process and provide support in the emotional processing of the work of the sub-groups. Each project winds up with a major final presentation that depicts the conclusions of the workshops, in which the children and youngsters proudly present their works of art. Ever summer the time spent together brings pleasure to everyone involved. You can find more details about the workshops, the programme outline and the workshop directors on the following pages. Naturally, you will discover many pictures that speak for themselves in terms of their artistic ideas... Enjoy reading! Elli Kosek Project Coordinator WARSZTATY TEATRALNE Prowadząca: Beata Fertala - Harlender Warsztaty teatralne to działania happeningowe z pogranicza teatru, filmu, żywego obrazu. Nabierają odwagi i spontaniczności. The theatre workshop touches on happenings, theater, film and living images. It aims at encouraging the enormous imagination of children through artistic forms of expression. Using masks, the children slip into new roles and gain courage and spontaneity. Characters that the children themselves create for the Shadow Theater become alive through their own animations. Unusual costumes produced out of natural products open up new perspectives onto objects and materials within the children’s environment. Their teamwork abilities are being promoted by the Black Light Theatre. The children and youngters learn to integrate within groups by acting together jointly or during the development of a film. Various forms of happenings will delight and excite the children already during the process of early formation of the film. The theatre workshop always provides something special for the youngsters to lead them back into the world of their own imagination. Często ograniczałem środki wyrazu powodując konieczność rezygnacji z nawyków, schematów twórczych i prostych sposobów realizacji. Aufgaben werde realisiert durch u.a. Director: Marek Stanielewicz The art workshop are composed of a wide range of art techniques and are geared towards the age of the participants. Great importance is attached to diversity and expressed through the use of techniques, tools and artistic expressions. Tasks are realized by inter alia graphics, painting, drawing, graphic design as well as elements of theatre, happenings and costumes. The tasks are set such that children and young people are forced to leave their habitual patterns and schemes having to reinvent themselves. The creative process is fundamental in the workshops. The materials and tools provide a challenge that needs to be overcome. Thus the children are being provided an opportunity to enter into a new and different relationship with their environment. The professional exhibition at the end of the workshops plays an important role and poses a creative confrontation with the participant’s own results. The children take their work home. This allows them to exhibit their created artwork in their own environment and therefore extends its satisfaction. Pomaga w nawiązywaniu kontaktu z otoczeniem, wyrażaniu uczuć w sposób niewerbalny, usprawnia psychicznie i manualnie. Przełamuje bariery językowe, pomaga tworzyć pozytywne relacje i nawyki między rówieśnikami, rozbudza instynkty poznawcze i twórcze. Rozwija poczucie piękna i wrażliwość. Clay is a shapeless material that is to be kneaded and formed. There are a variety of positive effects entailed in the process of working with clay, in particular therapeutic ones with calming effects on the nervous system and on the psyche. The creative process contributes to the development of cognitive and manual skills, and it also provides access to new forms of expressions and perspectives. This has a strong influence on verbal and nonverbal communication strategies, which may help overcome language barriers. It allows an altered perception of one’s environment and awakens creative instincts. Aesthetics and sensitivity obtain new significance here. The participants of this workshop will be given the opportunity to live out their creativity through working with the clay material. This gives rise to shapes with high artistic value, both deliberate, thought-out shapes as well as random ones. The participants go through the entire processing of the ceramic products independently. They model the clay, accompany the burning process and complete their works of art with the help of various glazes to provide its final appearance. The primary objective of this workshop is to inspire young participants to a world of improvisation, self-creation and self-awareness. This can contribute to the construction and consolidation of self-esteem and ideals, which may enable a particular access to arts such as dance and music. Body movements combined with personal intuition and improvisation leads participants to create their own „Here and Now”, which facilitates a glace at their very inner feelings. The dance workshop integrates various movement techniques, amongst them: contact improvisation, capoeira, acrobatics, contemporary dance, modern dance as well as elements of theatre and pantomime. In addition, the workshop will be accompanied by rhythms of instruments of afro-brazilian origin (particularly percussions), which combined with the imaginative body movements add to the quality of this high level workshop. Around the art workshops In addition to the art workshops, there are various other program elements that contribute to the success of the project. Integration is at the centre of attention during the entire international meeting and especially at the beginning of the project. Integrational games, language animation as well as many other common activities like sports, jolly evenings with music and dance in addition to an excursion day, all aim at consolidating team spirit and getting to know each other better. In order to be able to reprocess and to reflect on the European issues within the various art workshops, participants take part in thematic units on Europe beforehand. Therefore the workshop content builds on already existing knowledge of the young participants. The objective is for participants to independently arrive at new findings on topic areas they decide to question. The highlight of the project is the final presentation on the last project day. On this day the children experience a very special kind of excitement. In order to create a festive atmosphere, the dinner will be served on a meadow belonging to the foundation in form of a big picnic. Following this, the final presentations will be held in front of the audience: special attributes are the art- and ceramics exhibitions as well as the dance and theatre performances. For the small artist, these are very special moments, in which the can proudly present their pieces of art. Fundacja „Krzyżowa“ posiada stałe partnerstwa z różnymi instytucjami i organizacjami międzynarodowymi. Dotychczas w projektcje uczestniczyly następujace instytucje i organizacje: Die Stiftung Kreisau pflegt Partnerschaften mit verschiedenen internationalen Institutionen und Organisationen.
