Piotr Urbański CATEGORIES OF EUROPEAN CULTURE (AMU-PIE, konwersatorium fakultatywne, II sem., 30 godz.) Termin: wtorek, 11:30-13:00, sala 328 ECTS 2+2 Forma zaliczenia: zaliczenie na ocenę, możliwość zdawania egzaminu Język: angielski The aim of this subject is to teach students about origins and development of European Culture [EC], its periodization, main concepts and categories, cultural continuities and changes, as well meetings of the Occident with non-European cultures. Student has a basic knowledge about: the beginning of Europe in Ancient Greece and its society; concept of Roman Empire and its shift in Medieval and Early Modern times; Christian shift in EC (polytheism vs. monotheism, different place of religion in pagan and Christian society); concept of Classical Culture (Classical vs. Ancient) and the process of its transmission in EC (medieval and renaissance humanism, the concept of classical tradition); division of EC into East and West (Greek vs. Latin, Orthodoxy vs. Catholicism); the concept of Orientalism; European travels on East and discovering of America; changes of European society by French Revolution; decline of universalism of EC and creation of national cultures; nationalism and totalitarism in EC; development of new Europe: European Union. Student is able to: understand and define listed concepts and problems as well as map them in time and space; place listed concepts and problems in relation to his/her own cultural tradition; understand main causes of continuity and changes in EC; describe main variation of the myth of unity of/in EC; list main differences between EC and his/her own culture. dr Piotr Dobrowolski TEXT AND PERFORMANCE: CONTEMPORARY POLISH DRAMA (AMU-PIE, konwersatorium fakultatywne, II sem., 30 godz.) Termin: wtorek, 9:45-11:15, sala 324 ECTS 2+2 Forma zaliczenia: zaliczenie na ocenę, możliwość zdawania egzaminu Język: angielski The course introduces to the general characteristics of contemporary Polish literature for theatre and performance. The drama, its modern history, theory and practice will be the main focus along with different modes of texts for stage (e.g. performance texts for postdramatic theatre). The English translations of texts written and performed after 1989 will be read, presented and discussed in order to describe dominant tendencies, themes, modes and styles of traditional and innovative practices of writing for theatre. The history of Polish drama will be approached as a background for discussion, as well as relevant productions and ideas of the most prominent post-war Polish theatre makers. Students will get to know the phenomena of Polish dramatic literature and postdramatic texts for theatre. The basic contextual and theoretical introduction will be presented and followed by the discussion based on read texts, presented fragments of filmed performances, photos, critical texts and other documents available. Credits will include works of Dorota Masłowska, Paweł Demirski, Julia Holewińska, Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk and other prominent theatre and drama authors as well as directors putting their works onstage. dr Krzysztof Hoffmann EXPERIMETAL LITERATURE (AMU-PIE, konwersatorium fakultatywne, II sem., 30 godz.) Termin: środa, 18:45-20:15, sala 325 ECTS 2+2 Forma zaliczenia: zaliczenie na ocenę, możliwość zdawania egzaminu Język: angielski The course is an advanced introduction to the concept, roots, development and possible future of experimental literature. No previous knowledge is required, nevertheless the course will try to go beyond basic facts. Students participating in the course will gain knowledge about the historical avant-garde movements, postmodernism experimentalism, the so-called new experimentalism and contemporary experiments in the digital age. The general history of experimental literature will be depicted from the earliest 20th century events (Italian Futurism, Surrealism, etc.), through such movements as the nouveau roman or OuLiPo, to contemporary phenomena (Avant-Pop, Post-Postmodernism, Hoax Poetry, etc.). Examples will be drawn from Polish literature as well as from the international heritage. Students will get acquainted with the phenomena of experimental literature through a textbook and contextual and theoretical discussion. Apart from the textbook and the reading of short texts discussion will be based on presented in the classroom works of visual art, films, poems, etc. prof. dr hab. INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSE FOR CURIOUS HUMANISTS (AMU-PIE, konwersatorium fakultatywne, II sem., 30 godz.) Termin: wtorek, 17:00-18:30, sala 223 ECTS 2+2 Forma zaliczenia: zaliczenie na ocenę, możliwość zdawania egzaminu Język: angielski The course is an introduction to the concept of an archive and its’ career in theory and artistic practice in contemporary culture (‚analogue’ and digital) as well as academic practice. Students participating in the course will gain knowledge about the most influential theories of archive, based on archivists experience and the most symptomatic uses of archive in artistic works in the field of dance, performance, video, music (and others). Practical part of course will require a visit in the archive that results in preparation of ‚archive portfolio’ and collaborative educational/artistic game. prof. dr hab. Ewa Skwara ANCIENT LITERATURE. SELECTED PROBLEMS: ANTIQUITY IN THE CINEMA (AMU-PIE, konwersatorium fakultatywne, II sem., 30 godz.) Termin: poniedziałek, 13:30-15:00, sala 330 ECTS 2+2 Forma zaliczenia: zaliczenie na ocenę, możliwość zdawania egzaminu Język: angielski Module aims: - to gain knowledge of diverse relationships between classical literature and film; - to develop research skills in the field of diverse levels of textual relationships: persons, genres, motifs, and selected problems; - to develop the ability of interpretation of the most important literary works and filmy; Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences: - elementary knowledge of the literatures of ancient Greece and Rome; - ability to work as part of a team and discuss problems. A student reads ancient texts (Greek and Latin) in English translation, understands and interprets them in their broader cultural context; moreover, being aware of the influence of antiquity in films, and being able to actually perceive elements of antiquity’s reception in films, a student should discuss their meaning and impact. dr Błażej Warkocki POLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE IN THE CONTEXT OF GENDER AND QUEER STUDIES (AMU-PIE, konwersatorium fakultatywne, II sem., 30 godz.) Termin: czwartek, 17:00-18:30, sala 327 ECTS 2+2 Forma zaliczenia: zaliczenie na ocenę, możliwość zdawania egzaminu Język: angielski The course introduces to the general characteristics of contemporary Polish literature, film and theatre from the gendered and queered perspective. That's why it has three main aims. First: introduction to main concepts of gender and queer studies and its application to literary studies. Second: general characteristics of Polish queer literature, film and theatre. And third: introduction to Polish queer studies (interpretation of Polish culture from a queer perspective). The main theoretical frame will be Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's works and concepts used by her: homosocial desire, panic, masculinities, faminities, affects, gender perfomativity. From this perspective we we will be reading selected Polish modernist and postmodernist (fragments of) literary texts: Witold Gombrowicz, Miron Białoszewski, Dorota Masłowska, Bożena Keff, Michał Witkowski (and others), films (Sexmission, Suicide Room, Papusza) and theatre (Paweł Demirski& Monika Strzępka). Students will get to know the phenomena of Polish queer literature through basic contextual and theoretical introduction, given from a field of literary and cultural studies.
