HALBERSTADT CL.IV Kurz Rumpf (H.F.W.) Zimą 1917/1918 przystąpiono do prac projektowych. Konstruktor zmienił kształt kadłuba, który został skrócony i wzmocniony, czyniąc go bardziej obszernym i opływowym. CL.II i CL.IV posłużyła do zaprojektowania jeszcze bardziej zwartego samolotu szturmowego Halberstadt CLS I (1797/18 i 1799/18 serii „0” badawczo-prototypowej), który w niedalekiej przyszłości miał całkowicie zastąpić lekkie konstrukcje typu „CL”. Zachowany kadłub Halberstadta CLS.I możemy obecnie podziwiać w Deutsches Technikmuseum w Berlinie. Trzy wersje malowania (dostępne w tym modelu) pochodzą z ostatnich dwóch miesięcy wojny, kiedy to niemiecke armie 5. i 17., walczyły przeciwko armii Generała Johna J. Pershinga koło Meuse-Argonne i Saint-Mihiel. (PM) History The Halberstadt CL.IV two-seater was designed by Ing. Karl Theis (chief designer at Halberstädter Flugzeugwerke GmbH). The design was planned to replace the earlier Halberstadt CL.II met very favourably in combat conditions. Theis had personally collected observations from front-line Halb. CL.II pilots, and took these into consideration during the redesign of the aircraft. During winter of 1917-1918 he started the design work. The designer has changed the shape of the fuselage, shortening and strengthening it, making it more spacious and streamlined. He has also redesigned the fin and the tailplane, making the aeroplane more manoeuvrable. The wings were left unchanged, but the centre section was simplified and its weight reduced. Lower empty weight and the design alterations allowed to retain the same engine while increasing the cruising speed. It was also possible to load more ordnance without affecting the flying characteristics. Aircraft of the first production batch (H.F.W. Halb. CL.IV C.4600/18 to C.4749/18 and C.5770/18 to C.5919/18), were initially fitted with two machine guns. From aircraft C.4675/18 on a single machine gun was reinstated, usually fitted on the starboard side of the cockpit. However, the possibility of fitting two machine guns was retained in all production series. Similarly, the rear fuselage mount was changed: it was initially discarded (the semi-circular opening in the fuselage was used in all Halberstadt CL.II series), to bring it back in the mid-production run of the first series. However, probably at the request of pilots (vibrations and weakened fuselage) these were relocated to the bottom of the fuselage. At the end of the war Halberstadt CL.IVs started to be fitted with Heinecke system parachutes. This was not done as standard, but as initial combat tests. A seat-type parachute was planned for the pilot. The gunner’s parachute canopy was stored in the lower fuselage aft of the cockpit. The airman was strapped to it with the rip cord, giving him complete freedom of movement. The experience with the design of the Halb. CL.II and CL.IV was used to design an even more compact close support aircraft, the Halberstadt CLS I (1797/17 and 1799/18 of the ‘0’ test/prototype batch), scheduled to completely replace the ‘CL’ lightweight aircraft types in the near future. The preserved fuselage of the Halberstadt CLS.I can be seen today at the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin. Halberstadt CL.IVs reached the front line in early summer of 1918. By the end of the war about 18 attack squadrons from all 38 (Schlachtstaffel) completely or partly re-equipped with the type. ”Schlastas” were combined into larger groups called ”Schlachtgruppe”, assigned to the possession of an army. Three painting versions (in box model decals) are from last two month of the war, when German 5th and 17th army fought against the U. S. General John J. Pershing army near Meuse-Argonne and Saint-Mihiel. At this time Halberstadts CL.IV and other aircraft from Schlasta were combined in „Schlachtgruppe” and strongly cooperated with ground armies. Out of the 1,300 aircraft on order, about 840 aircraft had been built by the end of the war: seven series production batches at the parent Halberstadt factory and two batches under licence by LFG Roland (about 250 aircraft). Light Halberstadt CL.II and CL.IV aircraft used by the Schlachtstaffel units became the pattern for attack aircraft used over the battlefields until present day.
