At a market in central Tokyo, a bluefin tuna the size of five men and weighing 342 kg was sold recently for $390,000 – a sign that the Japanese have not lost their appetite for this endangered species. The attraction of bluefin tuna is still too big for many to resist, despite dangerously low global stocks. Six hundred thousand tonnes of the fish are eaten in Japan every year – mainly raw as sushi or sashimi. Sushi made from top bluefin tuna is sometimes sold for as much as $25 a piece at exclusive Tokyo restaurants. Japan consumes about 80% of all Pacific and Atlantic bluefin tuna. The country has been accused of trying to stop both global cuts to fishing quotas and complete bans on the fishing of this rare fish. The World Wildlife Fund has warned that if current fishing continues, the Atlantic bluefin tuna will be “functionally” extinct in three years. But this did not appear to be a worry at the Tsukiji market in Tokyo. Market officials often see prices rise during the year’s opening auction at Tsukiji, the world’s biggest fish market. But the new record price for a single fish was still unexpected. Traders at the market say growing Chinese demand for sushi is helping to push up prices. The 342kg fish, one of more than 500 tuna shipped in from around the world for the first auction of the year, was divided between two sushi restaurants – one in Tokyo, the other in Hong Kong. In Japan, many consumers do not fully understand the consequences of overfishing. “They go to the supermarket and see tuna lined up alongside lots of other varieties of seafood, all similarly priced, and they are fooled into thinking everything is available in abundance,” said Wakao Hanaoka, a campaigner for Greenpeace Japan. “But it is not possible for the Japanese to continue to eat tuna at this rate.” adapted from the original article by Justin McCurry, rewritten by Janet Hardy-Gould in The Guardian Weekly, 11. 02. 2011. T 4.1. Bluefin tuna is a rare type of fish but the Japanese still eat a lot of it. 4.2. Most Pacific and Atlantic bluefin tuna is eaten in Japan. 4.3. 4.4. The World Wildlife Fund does not worry about bluefin tuna population. The price of bluefin tuna is going up because sushi is more popular in China. 4.5. The 342kg tuna went to one restaurant. 4.6. Most Japanese consumers understand the problems of overfishing bluefin tuna. Lazy Susan Written by Nancy Pickard ‘I want you to teach me how to shoot a gun,’ Susan Carpenter said to her husband at breakfast. ‘You want me to do WHAT?’ Stan Carpenter stopped eating and stared at her. ‘Take me to a shooting range.’ Susan piled two tomatoes and a fried egg on to her bread so that she could eat it like a sandwich. It seemed to her a silly waste of effort to eat only one thing at a time. Her husband’s amazement turned to delight. ‘I think that’s a wonderful idea.’ Ever since she’d been robbed the week before on a dark night in the car park of the Mulberry Street Shopping Centre, Stan had been telling her to learn how to protect herself, preferably with a gun. ‘But do you mean it? You’ve always hated guns.’ ‘Well, I guess you win, dear,’ said Susan, smiling. ‘We’ll go to the range tonight,’ Stan promised. Susan had been more angry than scared when she was robbed. The robber hadn’t hurt her much, just a little knock on the head with his gun. It hadn’t even broken the skin. But she was so angry about it! ‘Fifty dollars!’ she shouted at the nice policeman. ‘One minute I had fifty dollars in my purse and then I had nothing! I have to work HOURS to earn that much money, and he takes it just like that! Fifty hard-earned dollars!’ She was right, of course, except about the ‘hard-earned’ part. Oh, she went to the sales office where she worked each day, and she smiled at the customers, and her bosses liked her – MOST people liked her, they couldn’t help it. But there was more of her work that DIDN’T get done than did. ‘Oh, well,’ she was always saying, ‘you know me… Lazy Susan.’ (…) 5.1. Susan wanted to learn to shoot because A. her husband could use a gun. B. she had been robbed and wanted to protect herself. C. she wanted to kill the robber. 5.2. The robbery made Susan feel A. fearful. B. depressed. C. furious. 5.3. At her office, Susan A. worked very hard for every dollar she earned. B. earned very little money. C. didn’t do much work. Germany gets tough on no ticket travel It is one of the things that always surprise visitors to Germany: how come there are no barriers at tube stations? “It could never work back home,” say tourists from countries such as Britain, “No one would pay.” About 3.5% of journeys on German public transport are not paid for, according to statistics from the Association of German Transport Operators (VDV). In Berlin, it is 6%. That might not sound a lot to a visitor but it is too much for the VDV. It is now demanding harder punishments for fare dodgers plus an increase in on-the-spot fines from $50 to $80, with $160 for repeated offenders. The association believes the current fine does not stop schwarzfahrer (“black riders”) who take their chances without a ticket. The $50 fine is equal to 17 journeys in Berlin. Here, it is sometimes possible to go for weeks, if not months, without being stopped by a ticket inspector. The VDV is also angry about a new internet “service” in one German city that helps fare dodgers avoid ticket inspectors. The MVV Blitzer warns passengers in Munich where plainclothed inspectors are working and what they are wearing. Oliver Wolff from the VDV is worried that not paying is becoming socially acceptable in Germany. “It has now got to the point where fare dodgers are organizing themselves and helping each other online. It’s this sort of open activity that is making travelling without a ticket seem less harmful,” he told the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. The VDV says fare dodging costs German transport companies up to $330 million a year. A further $130 million is spent on ticket inspectors. Although Germany is generally thought of as an obedient nation, there are certain exceptions, especially in the area of motoring. Radio bulletins regularly include blitzermeldungen (flash warnings), which tell drivers where speed cameras are working on any particular day. adapted from the original article by Helen Pidd, rewritten by Janet Hardy-Gould in The Guardian Weekly, 16. 03. 2012. 6.1.
