Spiritual Reflection
FOLLOW THE SHEPHERD
We’re all familiar with the image: Jesus,
staff in hand, carrying a lamb across his shoulders.
It’s a beautiful image but it doesn’t reflect the reality of
shepherding as hard and sometimes risky work.
In the passage prior to today’s Gospel Jesus has
healed a blind man on the Sabbath day and the Pharisees
say he has broken the law, which forbids all work on the
Lord’s day—even healing! Jesus says that, as the Good
Shepherd, he is not like hired hands who collect pay for
watching the sheep, but abandon them in time of need.
Jewish scriptures frequently describe God as
shepherd. Joseph was saved “By the power of the Mighty
One of Jacob, / because of the Shepherd, the Rock of
Israel” (Genesis 49:24).
Such imagery was also used by Moses and the
prophets as well as the psalmists: “Give ear, O
Shepherd of Israel, / you who lead Joseph like a
flock!” (Psalm 80:1) and “The LORD is my shepherd, I
shall not want” (Psalm 23:1).
So the Pharisees know exactly what Jesus means:
not only is he prepared to break the Sabbath law, but he is
claiming to be God, an outrage in their eyes. They also
know he is contrasting himself with them—the hired
hands entrusted with the care of God’s people, but caring
more for rules and regulations.
The Pharisees were not completely evil people,
but in their obsession with religious rules they had lost
sight of the living heart of Judaism (see
Deuteronomy 10:12–20 and Micah 6:8). In addition, they
lacked humility and were quick to pass judgment on
others who followed the rules less devotedly.
Any time we set ourselves up to say that others
are less worthy, less obedient, less devout than we are,
trouble follows. Let’s keep our eyes on the Shepherd and
follow him.

DOBRY PASTERZ
„Ja jestem dobry pasterzem. Dobry pasterz
daje życie swoje za owce” (J. 10,11). Obraz dobrego
pasterza, mający swoją genezę w Księgach Starego
Testamentu, stał się w nauczaniu Jezusa Chrystusa
jednym z najmilszych i najczęściej przez Niego
przypomnanych obrazów. Dla starożytnych Izraelitów owce
stanowiły wielkie, a często nawet jedyne bogactwo.
Izraelski pasterz żył dla swojej owczarni, troszczył się o
swoje owce tak, jak o swoich domowników, bronił je przed
dzikimi zwierzętami i rabusiami, często narażając swoje
życie.
Pan Jezus porównuje siebie do takiego pasterza,
„który daje życie swoje za swoje owce”. Dzisiejsza
Ewangelia i Niedziela Dobrego Pasterza, przypomina nam
pierwszego i najwyższego Kapłana-Pasterza Jezusa
Chrystusa, ale również i tych, którzy w szczególny sposób
Go zastępują i reprezentują kapłanów naszych ołtarzy.
Kapłani oglądani dzisiaj oczyma różnych ludzi
i poddani wielorakim próbom muszą się odwołać do tych
słów, albowiem kryje się w nich ogromna tajemnica
kapłaństwa Chrystusowego. „Ja jestem dobrym pasterzem” mówi Chrystus o Sobie, ale jednocześnie zwraca się do
wszystkich, którzy podejmują kapłańską służbę w Kościele.
I tu pojawia się pierwsza i zasadnicza prawda o kapłaństwie:
jeden jest Kapłan, jeden Pośrednik, jeden Pasterz - Jezus
Chrystus. Wszyscy zaś sprawujący pasterskie funkcje
w Kościele uczestniczą w jednym kapłaństwie
Chrystusowym. Kapłan jest Chrystusowym narzędziem
łaski, jest zewnętrznym znakiem tej łaski, kanałem, przez
który płynie ona do ludzi. Jest to wielka tajemnica, przed
którą wszyscy chylimy nasze czoła.
Ale kapłaństwo posiada także jeszcze drugi
wymiar, który w związku z dzisiejszą Ewangelią powinien
być szerzej omówiony. Jest to pasterska posługa Ludowi
Bożemu. Posługa na różne sposoby: słowem, czynem,
zachętą, przykładem, modlitwą. Drugi zasadniczy
obowiązek - to opieka duchowa nad Chrystusową trzodą.
Życie chrześcijanina jest bojowaniem i dopóki kapłańskie
ręce na wzór rąk Mojżesza są wzniesione do nieba, Kościół
działa, rozrasta się i doskonali w swoich członkach. Dlatego
wszystko, co jest wokół pasterza, co wokół niego się dzieje,
powinno być oplatane modlitwą.
I wreszcie trzeci obowiązek kapłana - to
solidarność z trzodą Chrystusową, która objawia się jako
odpowiedzialność za wspólne dobro wszystkich wierzących.
Pasterz musi być najpierw solidarny z tymi, którzy cierpią
na różne sposoby. Nie może jednak zapomnieć o tych,
którzy cierpienia zadają, według słów Chrystusa: „Mam
także inne owce, które nie są z tej owczarni. I te muszę
przyprowadzić i będą słuchać głosu mego i nastanie jedna
owczarnia i jeden pasterz”. Kapłaństwo we wszystkich
swoich wymiarach ma być przede wszystkim służbą.

Prayer seeking the intercession of Blessed Pope John Paul II
Oh Blessed Trinity, We thank you for having
graced the Church with Pope John Paul II and
for allowing the tenderness of your Fatherly
care, the glory of the cross of Christ, and the
splendor of the Holy Spirit, to shine through
him.
Trusting fully in your infinite mercy and the
maternal intercession of Mary, he has given us
a living image of Jesus the Good Shepherd,
and has shown us that holiness is the necessary
measure of ordinary Christian life and is the
way of achieving
eternal communion
with you.
Grant us by his
intercession, and
according to your
will, the graces we

Religious Education News
The last class for Religious Education was on April 28th. We have had a very good
year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and the children for all
their cooperation during this past school year. Our attendance was at an all-time high
this year, which tells us that both the parents and children know the value of religious
education.
I would like to thank the following people:

We hope that you have a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing you back
next year. I will be sending a letter out at the beginning of August to let you know
about our program for the 2012-2013 school year. Also, I encourage those of you who
have access to the internet to check our new website: stpriscilla.org. Any new
information about registration and the beginning of classes will be on the website.
Remember to go to Mass and receive the sacraments during the summer months.
