Dzieci Holocaustu Krakow Child Survivors of the Holocaust Kalendarz 2016/5776-7 Calendar Jewish Community Centre of Krakow Cieszę się, że Stowarzyszenie Dzieci Holocaustu zbiera się teraz w JCC. “I am grateful to be a part of the warm and welcoming community where members of the Children of the Holocaust Association can gather together and participate in programs. The atmosphere is kind where respectful and the employees and volunteers always have a smile on their face. The JCC is a special place for the Jewish community, everyone feels important and liked.” Elżbieta serves as the President of the Krakow branch of the Children of the Holocaust Association. She has three children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. “I like the JCC for its wonderful, friendly atmosphere and the fantastic people who are there.” Aleksander worked as both a translator and a tour guide in Krakow and throughout Europe. He has two sons and a granddaughter. “For me, the JCC is a very important place where I can meet Polish Jews. I am particularly happy that the JCC looks after us, the Child Survivors of the Holocaust. I am also grateful that I could go to Israel thanks to the JCC.” Anna has two daughters, six grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters. She enjoys being a part of the JCC and attending events with her grandson who is a member of JCC Krakow’s student club GIMEL. Co tydzień komentuje Torę w cyklu „What’s the Parsha Pani Zosia?” Redaktor naczelna czasopisma „Jesteśmy”, członkini Klubu Chrześcijan i Żydów „Przymierze”. “The JCC is a second home to me, a part of my life. Every day, I go to the Senior Club and participate in activities such as Hebrew class and attend lectures by the Rabbi. I can’t imagine not spending a day at the JCC.” Zofia serves as Vice-President of the Krakow branch of the Children of the Holocaust Association. Zofia is the Editor-in-Chief of JCC Krakow’s magazine “Jesteśmy” and gives the weekly parsha on YouTube in the series, “What’s the Parsha, Pani Zosia?” Zofia has one child and two grandchildren. Kiedy mówię po żydowsku, widzę łzy wzruszenia u ludzi, którzy odwiedzają JCC. Przypominają sobie ten język albo wspominają swoich dziadków, którzy w nim mówili. Emanuel (Mundek) – inżynier elektryk, działacz społeczności żydowskiej. W JCC spotyka się z grupami młodzieży z całego świata, którym opowiada o losach swojej rodziny. Co tydzień w trakcie kolacji szabatowych, śpiewa autorską wiązankę pieśni w jidysz. “I am happy that I can share my knowledge of Yiddish and speak to many of our visitors who often spoke the language with their grandparents. It is an emotional experience for both me and these visitors to connect to our past.” Emanuel (Mundek), a retired engineer, enjoys meeting young people from all around the world to tell them about his life. During Shabbat dinner at the JCC, you can often find Mundek singing Yiddish songs. Edukacja młodego pokolenia to klucz do przyszłości społeczności żydowskiej w Krakowie. Anna – doktor historii, archeolog, wykładowczyni akademicka, członkini Towarzystwa Przyjaźni Izrael-Polska, sekretarz zarządu w krakowskim oddziale Dzieci Holocaustu. Była przewodnicząca krakowskiego oddziału TSKŻ. Członkini założycielka Klubu Chrześcijan i Żydów „Przymierze”. “I am happy that the JCC is devoted to working with youth. It is so important for the future of Krakow’s Jewish community to attract the younger generation.” Anna holds a PhD in Archeology and was a university professor. She is a member of the Polish-Israeli Friendship Association and a founding member of the interfaith association “Przymierze”. Cenię sobie działalność JCC i kontakt z życzliwymi i pomocnymi ludźmi. “I appreciate that there are always activities going on at the JCC and that I can connect with members of the younger generation who are warm and helpful. Thanks to the JCC, I went to Israel for the first time in fifty years! I am so grateful for this trip. It brought up a lot of emotions for me, especially visiting Yad Vashem and meeting with my parents’ friends from during the war.” Anna worked in Krakow’s transportation department. She has two children and five grandchildren. Naftali – z zawodu mechanik samochodowy. Ma dwie córki, troje wnuków i dwoje prawnuków. Od lat 90-tych zaangażowany w działalność stowarzyszenia Dzieci Holocaustu. “I am so happy there is a place like the JCC’s Senior Club, where I can always come and meet with friends.” Naftali is a retired automotive mechanic. He has been involved with the Children of the Holocaust Association since the 90’s. He has two daughters, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. W JCC każdy znajdzie coś dla siebie. Rena (Rywka) – była księgową w dużym przedsiębiorstwie. Ma syna i wnuczkę. W latach 90., dzięki wnuczce, ponownie zaangażowała się w życie żydowskie. “The JCC has such a wide variety of activities, there is something for everyone. I am happy that I can participate in rehabilitation classes for the seniors with a physical therapist and in Senior University classes. I like going to the JCC very much.” Rena (Rywka) worked as a bookkeper in a large firm. In the 1990s, thanks to her granddaughter, she became involved again in Jewish life. “JCC Krakow is a very friendly place! All three generations of my family feel a connection here.” Kirena worked as a pediatrician and served for several years as the Director of Rehabilitation at a children’s hospital near Krakow. She has two sons and a granddaughter. JCC to dla mnie dom. Miejsce bardzo przyjazne, gdzie przyjeżdzam odpocząć i gdzie spotykam miłych, serdecznych i uśmiechniętych ludzi. Miejsce jedyne w swoim rodzaju. Henryk – inżynier elektryk. Uczestniczył w historycznym spotkaniu z Księciem Karolem, które zaowocowało powstaniem JCC. Ma syna, ktory mieszka w Izraelu, troje wnuków i prawnuczkę. “JCC is home to me. It is a warm and friendly place where people are caring and always smiling. It is one of a kind, there is no other place like it.” Henryk, a retired engineer, had the privilege of meeting with Prince Charles when he visited Krakow in 2002. He suggested that the Jewish community needed a place where survivors could be together which is how the JCC came to be. He has one son who lives in Israel, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. “I value my time spent at the JCC and especially enjoy celebrating weekly Shabbat dinners and holidays with my friends from the community. My husband and I come to the JCC as much as possible.” Bożena worked at Krakow’s city library as a librarian and curator. She became involved in the Jewish community in the 1970s and continues to be an active member at the JCC. The Prince of Wales and now serves as the focal point for the resurgence of Jewish life in Krakow, which has dramatically increased since Poland’s transition to a democracy in 1989. JCC Krakow works to change both the world’s perception of Poland and Poland’s perception of Jews by providing social, educational and community-oriented services to the Jewish community of Krakow, by offering programming open to the entire Krakow community to foster Polish-Jewish relations, and by acting as a visitors center for the hundreds of thousands of tourists, many of them Jewish, who pass through Krakow. Located in the heart of Kazimierz, the JCC provides Krakow’s growing Jewish community with a space to meet, learn, and share ideas in a warm, welcoming environment. The JCC is devoted to nothing less than the revival of Jewish life in our beautiful city. A committed team of enthusiastic staff and volunteers works year round to build our community. Additionally, we offer programming and events to engage Krakovians in intercultural education to build longstanding cooperation between communities. We currently boast 600 Jewish members as well as a robust volunteer program which includes 50 non-Jews. JCC Krakow provides programming for Jewish holidays, weekly Shabbat dinners and services, social activities, targeted welfare provision, festivities, education for all ages, arts and culture (including over 35 Jewish-focused events each week). We provide a home for all generations including our Senior Club (with over 80 Holocaust survivors), GIMEL – the Jewish Student Club, Sunday School and nursery, and Club Bet. Krakow, with the JCC leading the way, is one of the most compelling, important stories in the Jewish world today as a community long believed to have seen its’ end, is being reborn in Krakow’s open, tolerant, nurturing environment. About our calendar We, members of the Krakow branch of the Child Survivors of the Holocaust organization, feel honored, excited, and a little embarrassed being in this calendar but we couldn’t refuse. Why? As “Children of the Holocaust” our childhoods were taken away from us but we were given a chance and we survived and even thrived, and we eventually had our own children, grandchildren and some of us, great-grandchildren. And thanks to the JCC we now have a warm, welcoming place to be together and to tell others our stories of strength, resilience and above all, hope. We may not be the youngest or most beautiful models in the world but the gift of life we’ve been given is the most beautiful thing there is. Please treasure it as we do.
