After 10 editions of reflection on dance and history in the 20th century, in 2012 the Body/Mind Festival will take us into new realms of art of the 21st century, into dance/ing emotions. In contemporary, particularly avant-garde, art, emotions are an absolute taboo. Many brilliant artists who work with modern strategies and concepts, developed through years of practice, on one hand avoid the topic of emotions, but on the other develop an interest in the language of the body and its expression. Edyta Kozak dyrektor artystyczna C/U | C/U artistic director The Festival will be an occasion to examine how emotions have been represented and interpreted in European art of the last decade. What inspires emotions? How do artists convey sadness, suffering, fear, melancholia, tenderness, and joy in their performances with the use of gesture, face expression, and body language? Body/Mind performances use new technologies, superb dancing techniques, and the whole stage “machinery” to show that even without war, without mass extinction and heavy traumas, while living our everyday lives and struggling with how we were raised and what has been stifled in us, we are constantly accompanied by fear and questions, by dreams of love and fulfillment and of belonging to a community. What we are offering at the Festival is not a historical narrative, but the narrative of an individual entangled in politics, in the society and in his or her profession, namely, the profession of a dancer, an artist. Our views on emotions and their relationship to the mind or intellect do not change with time. It is only interpretation of them that changes and the ability to interpret is of key importance to our life. Let us give in to and confront emotions which accompany the presented works; let is reflect and on our own. kalendarium | programme Duża Scena Malarnia Modelatornia Klub festiwalowy 20 . 09 15.00–18.00 16.00–19.00 18.00–20.00 czwartek warsztaty Alessandro Sciarroni wideo / biblioteka Artysta tańca. In revolver besorgen [get a revolver], the German director and choreographer Helena Waldmann, considered one of the creators of postdramatic theatre, takes for her protagonist an ex-prima ballerina who is losing her mind to dementia. In her new production, Waldmann investigates forgetting as a positive and liberating potential of the human brain, sensing the capacity for happiness contained there. A humorous as well as grotesque performance reflects on restraints and the temptation to break away from these, using ballet as a symbol of the rigorous training that life demands of us. The superb dancer, Brit Rodemund, brilliantly shows the transition from a highly organized structure to the world of improvisation based on individual experience. She seems to be saying: those who forget can achieve more. The performance is created by Mathilde Monnier and La Ribot, who are among the most important figures of contemporary choreography. They have very different backgrounds but they are prompted by similar concerns regarding the future of art, particularly performance art. Hiding behind the stage name Gustavia, they draw on the tradition of the burlesque, speaking about matters vital to them, such as womanhood, death, theatre, the life of the artist and the catastrophes and joys related to it. They use black humor to confront the limited image of femininity imposed on women daily by the society and the media. The fact that they represent mature female bodies, but their choreography and jokes are usually reserved for the young, adds force to their critique. www.mathildemonnier.com www.laribot.com Alessandro Sciarroni | Włochy Joseph 25 września | 19.00 | czas: 30 min. | premiera: 2011 | | 19.30 TOP 10 – Aerowaves warsztaty: 20–24 września | 15.00–18.00 fot. The performance consists of three solo presentations, the “lamentations” of the title, which by various means tell the same story of loss and loneliness. The stories are both intimate and formalized, coded, in other words, choreographed. www.koncentrat.com fot. Każde solo ugina się pod ciężarem przepychu mieszanki stylów tańca, muzyki i ekstrawaganckich strojów. Bada zderzenie kultury voguing, postmodernistycznego tańca i własnej tożsamości artystów, w której pod zwyczajnością i spektakularnością skrywają oni pragnienie bycia kimś innym i lęk przed sobą samym. Spektakl inspirowany filmem Paris is Burning (1990 r.), dokumentującym fenomen voguing, zjawiska kulturowego, które zapoczątkowane zostało w latach 60. XX w. w Stanach Zjednoczonych, w kręgach mniejszości seksualnych i etnicznych. Four performers demand to be recognized as Mimosa. Each solo is heavy with a rich mixture of various dance styles, music, and extravagant costumes. The performance examines the clash of the voguing culture, postmodern dance, and individual identity. Under plainness and spectacularity, the artists conceal the desire to be someone else and the fear of who they are. The performance has been inspired by the film Paris is Burning (1990), documenting voguing, a cultural phenomenon initiated in the 1960s in the United States, in the community of sexual and ethnic minorities.
