DOUBLE BOTTOM Hidden Depth 2013 The idea for the Nave Principial project was to uncover the stone tiles and to excavate a 7x25 m (ca. 23 x 82’) rectangular opening in the slanted floor, exposing the underlying surface, parallel to the existing floor level. It turned out to be impossible, so I placed a concrete panel of similar measurements on top of the structure; it is supported directly by the surface of the floor on one side, and on the other side by car lifts, holding it horizontally in place. The layout was specifically designed so that the slant of the floor in Nave Principial was taken into account and the leveling of its ground was achieved. The modern concrete panel was taken out of its context and upgraded to the status of an all-encompassing unit. The laser beam pointing out the perfectly level line serves as a point of reference. The concrete slab marks another surface, from where I was trying to excavate my way to the “absolute” bottom. The rectangular opening on three sides reaches all the way to the edge marked directly by the floor. From this side on, I signal the beginning of descend beneath the existing floor level of Nave Principial, on which the concrete panel was installed. The excavation exposing surface of the platform is not an archeological gesture nor does it represent any attempt to reach any “right” level. Rather, it is a means of a new kind of relationship -- a modern artifact. It was never my intention to allow the place of rich past history like Ex Teresa to dictate a context in any way. The “modern” element is devoid of any décor or meaning, disconnected from history and from the viewer, and totally self- self-contained in its industrial sterility. I am trying to establish what is going to happen when “inappropriate” pieces fall into “inappropriate” places. An element disconnected from its causal context becomes irrelevant; it produces an obsolete impression of uncertainty and disintegration which is a proof of exhaustion; it is a project conceived of the lack of something, of nonexistence. It is a fictional material gadget, lacking any connection between its inside and outside. DOG GOD Single-channel video and sound. Duration: 9 minutes 28 seconds The „object” presented here is an attempt to separate religion from its economic utility. The objective is not as much to present arguments for or against it, but rather to show the absurdity of the very form of its subject. Assigning a human being with the status of a sacrifice reduces it to its animal substance. A human sacrifice is in no way better than an animal one. The human sacrifice is, in fact, becoming an animal. The barbarity of this situation lies in regarding it as a “human rights issue,” when it is actually a matter of political and economical reality. The Dog is based on the fake identity of a bogus subject, which is PIG, and not on the identity of the sacrifice. DOG spelled backwards reads GOD. In various religions and mythologies, a DOG serves as a messenger; here, however, we see a pig instead of a dog. There is an idiom in my native language used to describe a situation when someone is trying to sling mud at someone else -- to make malicious charges and otherwise discredit their opponent – it is called “podłożyć świnię: ”to planting a pig” on someone. It was of great (or even crucial) importance that the test is carried out in the wild – in an environment that is indifferent, and untouched by sense of guilt. DOG video is projected on a screen made from the same kind of fabric on which Juan Diego saw the vision of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is the proper deception of the crime of stealing: to occlude the fact that, ultimately, THERE IS NOTHING TO STEAL - this way, the constitutive lack of the Other is concealed, i.e. the illusion is maintained that the Other possessed what was stolen from it. If, in love, one gives what one doesn’t possess, in a crime of love, one steals from the beloved Other what the Other doesn’t possess... Slavoj Zizek, On Faith LAVANDERÍA Ficha técnica Instalación: 5m ancho x 7m profundidad x 4m altura, aproximadamente. The Laundromat Installation, ca. 5m W x 7m D x 4m H (16’ w x 23’ w x 13’ d) A standalone structure consisting of three walls, a three-part ceiling and a floor; most of it covered with tinware. The structure contains a built-in irrigation system made of a canister in the base of the installation and a water pump. Timers of three out of five washing machines contained in the room are broken; other machines are not in usable condition. The Laundromat partially utilizes elements of RED RAIN project (2000), but it is in no way a continuation nor extension of it. Immigrants and wares flow in through the southern border. Their situation quickly deteriorates, especially in the case of women. Everything has to go through the “laundering” process in order to proceed further, towards the northern border. The Laundromat as a survival strategy – sink or swim. Inside the former Capilla de Las Animas chapel, which is a part of Ex Teresa, the rain falls constantly – and therefore whoever tries to do laundry in there, will either get completely soaked or even washed away. If, however, such an attempt is even partially successful in the pouring rain, it may become a hiperrealistic dimension of a social discourse. Washing machines with their broken timers do not make the Laundromat a negotiation-friendly place. Initial concept called for the Laundromat to be inhabited by a water snake for the duration of the exhibition. A few “ladies” from the neighborhood were hired for a small amount of money to participate in the exhibition opening. A sign with admission hours for the Laundromat placed by the entrance to the Capilla de Las Animas for the duration of the exhibition, informing the locals when its washing machines can be used for free. Ex Teresa Center for Contemporary Art is directly adjacent to the National Palace, the seat of the president. In this context, the Palacio Nacional operates as a subsidiary of the laundromat at Ex Teresa, similarly as the pyramid (or rather, remains of one) located on the opposite side of the gallery building. Ex Teresa is a modern institution, established on the ruins of the pyramid, on the top of which a sanctuary of rain used to be located; now, it begins to rain inside the ex Teresa, which is on the verge of collapse both as a building and as an institution. All three buildings – ex Teresa with its laundromat, the presidential palace, and the ruined pyramid – are integral parts of the design, functioning as an unified space, belonging to the same time. Their historical and aesthetic context is irrelevant. Rain, traditionally perceived as a cleansing force, is utilized here as an acoustic phenomenon. To improve the acoustics, most of the elements in the laundromat were covered with tinware, which enhances dull and monotonous sound of raindrops hitting its surface and tunes it to the proper frequency. Sweatshop This is not an attempt at questioning a possibility of change or at dragging art into a political or socio- political or ethico-aesthetic discourse; nor is it an effort to start a dialogue or a discussion of its actual pros and cons. Such an attempt would bring no results whatsoever in battle against the phenomenon presented here, nor would it constitute any meaningful example. Underage sweatshop workers making t-shirts, India. In the act of hiring underage sweatshop workers to produce t-shirts, theory gets united with practice by a different set of rules. It can be assumed that whoever is condemned to working in an illegal t-shirt-producing sweatshop has brought this on himself. Rules of conduct in a sweatshop are arbitrary, but through slave labor the oppressive power gets activated, and it supports the status quo while officially trying to eradicate it by earning profits from such exploitation. The victim activates the power that becomes her oppressor. “In order for a change to occur, everything has to stay the same.” In this case, the oppressor – people in power – is capable of making their false resemblance effective, while the art involved with discussing this phenomenon remains ineffective, false and entrenched in its own reality. Despite the strict and sworn secrecy surrounding this business, there is nothing secret or private about it: everything is official and transpires in the open. Everything that transpires outside the law becomes marked by a sense of adventure and independence which allegedly makes people free – and this misguided sense of freedom allows them to forever dwell on the shallows of their own hypocrisy. The question remains, whether they can ever be capable of reaching for what is real, independent and truly free. *** “At this point art entered into infinite reproduction, with everything that doubles itself, even the banal reality of the everyday, falling by the same token under the sign of art and becoming aesthetic. The same goes for production, which we might say has today entered into aesthetic: reduplication, the phase where, expelling all content and all finality, it becomes somehow abstract and non-figurative . In this way it expresses the pure form of production, taking upon itself, as art does, the value of the finality without end. An ‘and industry may then exchange their signs: art can become a reproduction machine (Andy Warhol) without ceasing to be art, since the machine is now nothing but a sign. Production can also lose all its social finality as its means of verification, and finally glorify [itself].” Jean Baudrillard, Symbolic Exchange and Death *** It may be proposed that these t-shirts are sold as art objects in order to generate a tangible dimension and real help, and this way to achieve sociopolitical and aesthetic goals of art… This, however, is not my intention. T-shirts are being sold separately, as art objects produced illegally by minors. Each t-shirts comes with a serial number and a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. It is pointless to take sides here. Both sides fluctuate into each other. What is certain is that it is better to watch a Holocaust through a fence. There is a suspicion bordering on certainty that we are stuck in a place that is being watched from the right perspective. Maybe it is us who betrayed narcocorridos? This becomes a norm in culture of illegality. FENCE Concentration Garden (2003-2013) The Fence is a thermal space based on a strong feedback loop. What we are dealing with here are two systems working together and feeding on each other. The ZOO on the other side is more important than the problems of those who were forced to participate in it. Perhaps we are not the observing party here? We are granted status of “observers”, yet we do not know if we still maintain the right to self-ownership. Once the viewers no longer are considered citizens, they become mere consumers; and when consumers become victims, no one seems to care much about them. Narcocrridos ignore the genuine victims; what is much more important is to become someone who is being watched rather than someone who watches. An important factor here is nostalgia for places where one once lived, spent one’s childhood, has grown up as well as strong identification with the characters, on behalf of both children and adults audiences. Watching narcocorridos is one of the favorite family pastimes. Not even the fact that the family audience of narcocorridos sits inside a luxury concentration camp can spoil their fun. I’m trying to modify the very concept of a fence or a boundary, because as such they no longer serve their former function. A fence or a fuzzy boundary like one we encounter here definitely needs to utilize the language of a soap opera. The color of wire fence encourages trespassers to cross it. The perception of reality has long been adjusted to that of narcocorridos. Behind the fence a plain glass neon light is located. The fence is made of neon wire. Its height reaches one-third of the height of entrance to the Palacio Nacional. Chicagocorridos October 15, 1994 Wojtek Ulrich Born in Poland Live and work in New York City 1987 M.F.A. The paradox of useless Irving Domínguez No artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style. No artist is ever morbid. The artist can express everything. Oscar Wilde, The Preface, on Dorian Gray, 1891 We are in the belly of the whale. Centuries ago we know about this stranding, but walked into their cavities just recently. Its entrails were taken away, first with greediness and lawlessness. Surprisingly these weren’t the entrails of the beast. It belonged to other creatures. Santa Teresa, La Antigua, it was a complex of church and a cloister for the order of Barefoot Carmelites. A place for worship, work and eternal peace, it revealed very well the latter when at the beginning of the eighties were discovered, on the lower Choir, 13 graves with remains of nuns’ bodies. It was confirmed by those who bring order among the spoils, continued desecration, made diagrams, gently cleaned the incomplete skeletons, arranged the puzzle and finally delivered to insatiable gaze of scientists. (Which eternal peace? Pure formality) Here, a death compass embraces us. Here, a set of proposals by an artist will be distributed. Emplacements that we can designate in a more conversational way: “works of art”. In several of them will be recognizable sculptural properties, open for the viewer’s auscultation. Materials articulating could be verified by executions, in some cases. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t expect for mise en scène. It’s not responding to this architecture’s dead music. We want to set limits trough transit experience, cut of pit the prolonged exhalation of a dying regime. In its own space, on its own terms: symbolically, or to be more precise, from discourse. Just for that reason Wojtek Ulrich will risk a little army of aesthetic machines. Lovers of trends in contemporary art will find frustration when they realized there is no cybernetics involved here. But the simple structure of these machines may be fulminant. If there is no innocent image, there is always an aesthetic device that is engaging. It can objurgate the viewers; it can declare them accomplices of an operation that they never expected to get involved. Which regime I’m talking about? Democracy? It can be. After the outbreak of 2008 global crisis, we learned about the speculation games that support the international economic system. A sophisticated game of transfers, sale and purchase of black boxes that throws responsibility of the ultimate collection to the weakest partner of this crime (indeed, they didn’t know they were part of it). Depletion of such operations has had drastic consequences on several countries, transforming daily life into a veritable minefield for the exercise of citizenship. The sudden pauperization of democratic states in Western world diminished its role as arbiters of common interest. They cannot resist the urge from business elites, those who have managed to break parliamentary systems and the party hegemony. They have raised an state of emergency, where converge the rage, the resentment, and had boosted new citizen action fronts. They had also raise a deep distrust from the legacy of modern political experiences. But if Capitalism on its own account has done enough to make the goddess of Democracy kneel down, what are we talking about? Religion? Or to be more precise, is all about a matter of Faith? Well, is not here anymore. It escaped years ago. You can hear the shortness of breath while she’s running away. Fifty years has taken to do so. Perhaps it’s all that we need to these machines turn and watch its slow procedure of cut, pounding and devastation. This will happen before your eyes and your body. It will remember (to us) when in this country we believe in be the upright, walking in the streets without the risk of being hitted by the car and its irresponsible driver, without the fear of assaulted by a robber while we go home. We travel the territory following precise routes, trying to avoid some illegal transaction on the road; a battle between cops and thieves or the blocking of a road ‘cause is the final alarm call for the demonstrators of a fight we’re not interested to understand. The right to free movement looks now as a nice story from the past. Also your body will remember the lack of that certain substance you need to actually resist this life. The tension will conquer you until you find it. And when chemical relief will be reached you will not mind about the dead civilians, now counted on thousands, just breeding the police files. You will not mind the interference by criminal interests on current politics; or on regional economies or even on the election of your local representative. No sacrifice will solve the problem ‘cause we bury our first gods and the imposed ones, we had distorted so much now that they’re very similar to us. Welcome to the slow fire of our old ikons, is urgent: Those representations must atone for their sins too. June 2013. On Mexico – Tenochtitlán, the immortal city. The End of Art? by Andrzej Jachimczyk Art operates as an end in-itself (an sich) and as an aim for-itself (für sich) through a dialectical contradiction within art’s purpose – a struggle between its moral utility, which is merely the means to its essence and the purpose as art reaches retrospectively for itself. While discussing art as utility, Hegel points out that each historical stage and mode of art relates to some moral demands, which are a final means in themselves, when “the aim of art is restricted to its usefulness” but not in relation to the essential vocation of art. The boundaries of entertainment, education, sensation, etc., which are represented throughout the history of different forms of art, are valued in art and aesthetics today, just as they were in Hegel’s time. However, these historical and cultural realities, while transforming art as a result of the continuous tension between the moral utility of art and its true purpose (art foritself), are the ends in themselves and the means to a true concept of art, contrary to the idea of art in-itself. The concept of truth is imbedded within the concept of beauty and the “art’s vocation is to unveil the truth in the form of sensuous artistic configuration,” Hegel claims comparing, the problem of inquiry into the genuine real by breaking through “pure appearance and deception,” to which “we are accustomed to ascribe values of actuality, reality and truth,” with an idea of artistic beauty, to which he assigns a higher (truer) value. Bio: Andrzej Jachimczyk (b. in Warsaw), based in New York since 1976, holds a Ph.D. from the European Graduate School in Switzerland and teaches sociology at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He is the author of a book, Reading Hegel After Nietzsche, published by the Atropos Press in March 2013. Hegel’s discussion of art and beauty originates from the ontological perspective of the nature of becoming: becoming spirit as a self-consciousness of spirit. In other words, we are beings that become spiritual and due to this, the purpose of man is to freely and self-consciously understand the world and himslf. This understanding is expressed by natural science and traditional philosophy as a process of establishing the truth. However, in Hegelian speculative dialectics, it is the contradictory interpenetration of art’s beauty with logic’s truth, for “in the spiritual nature of man duality and inner conflict burgeon, and in their contradiction he is tossed about, for in the pure thought […] man cannot hold out; he needs also sensuous existence,” which is indeed an attempt to access (contrary to traditional understanding) genuine reality. Beauty then, is not just a sensuous appearance that satisfies our taste but “a specific way of expressing and representing the truth, and therefore [beauty] stands open throughout in every respect to conceptual thinking,” for in order for beauty to fully express human freedom, it must be necessarily created by man (not nature) through art in a selfconscious and free artistic process. Hegel argues that art and beauty can only be attributed to human activity alone: “art as a product of human activity refers to the placing of the work of art in relation to the external phenomena of nature.” However, art cannot be attributed to just any individual person (any traditional artist) for it is “a product of talent and genius.” He apparently adhered to the idea of genius developed by Kant, who attributed the production of fine or beautiful arts (schöne Kunst) to the human capacity of genius, by which “nature gives the rule to art” and thus to the artist. Genius is a talent that cannot be learned and it “cannot be described or indicated scientifically how it brings about its products,” of which even the artist himself does not know how his own artistic ideas emerge. Hegel, however, rejects the idea of the artist as a mindless vehicle for the genius of nature, because “in nature this medium is the unconscious, the sensuous, and the external, which stands far below consciousness.” Instead, in relation to man, “art [...] has its origin in the fact that man is thinking consciousness, i.e. that man draws out of himself and puts before himself what he is and whatever else is.” Man, in other words, has self-consciousness. Hegel’s idea of the artist’s self-consciousness as an agent in the production of art is contrary to the idea in Kant of an artist who “does not know how he came by the idea for” his art, as well as the idea in Nietzsche of “the artist [who] has been released from his individual will, and has become the medium for” his art. This anthropocentric attitude in Hegel is justified by his claim that man is a part of the Divine through conscious, self-productive spirit, which is revealed in art, for art and man belong simultaneously to realm of the spirit. He diminishes nature, which is “immediate and single,” while emphasizing man, who “as spirit duplicates himself, in that he is as things in nature are, but he is just as much for himself; he sees himself, represents himself, represents himself to himself, thinks, and only on the strength of this active placing himself before himself, is he spirit.” The artistic production of self as the other, by means of the mind and spirituality of an artist, has the potential for creating a true depiction and self-representation of oneself. Therefore, from this perspective, art’s truth has a higher status than the only apparent, immediate “truth” of nature. Art impacts the sensuous sphere – “the work of art, as being for apprehension by man’s senses is drawn from the sensuous sphere” – and that “the poorest mode of apprehension, the least adequate to spirit, is purely sensuous apprehension,” or sense perception and practical desire. However, Hegel argues that the work of art as a “sensuous object is not merely for sensuous apprehension, […] it is essentially at the same time for spiritual apprehension; the spirit is meant to be affected by it.” The beauty of a work of art should therefore affect two opposite domains of perception simultaneously: the domain of feelings and sensuality, and the domain of reason and intelligence. However, in the process of apprehending art, Hegel does not see these two spheres of perception as separate but as acting in a coexisting unity. Therefore the ideal apprehension of art is a contradictory, processual union of the sensual and rational artistic perceptions (Hegelian plasticity, Plastizität), in which “art’s task is to ‘liberate’ the truth from an immediate reality that is only perceived to be true.” Plasticity than is inherent to a work of art in which the sensuous aspect of the beautiful is fading away or ceasing-to-be, while, at the same time, the aspect of the truth as an ideal, rational thought is coming-to-be. From the perspective of traditional aesthetics and logic, these two opposite forces (Ineinander) should not be interrelated to such a degree. However, Hegel shows that the work of art is (in) the middle between these two forces: as the truth within artistic beauty (and vice versa – the artistic beauty in the truth). This perspective provides us with sufficient evidence to risk the claim that the Hegelian middle is similar to the Nietzschean beyond: they are both one and the same Jenseits, standing outside the conventional dichotomy of ethics. Art thus is the third, the sensuous-rational dyad, the chiasmic unity of two opposites in the perpetual strife between beauty and truth, simultaneously ceasing and coming-to-be, endlessly. ¿Lo he desanimado? (…) Gierkiller (excerpt of a novel) By Piotr Milewski - So, you say there is an afterlife? – I asked Oczko the Cat. - Let’s just say there is. But what kind of life is it? It’s just an afterlife. Everyone you ask seems to be saying it’s cool: the presence of God is constantly palpable, and all creation revels in the everlasting happiness that rains down indefinitely like life-giving water, and then it flows back to its impenetrable, unknowable source… True, there’s no need to work or struggle, food’s free – food for the soul, that is: one can’t digest any real food without a stomach. It’s a fact. The absence of a stomach also means the absence of hunger, but wouldn’t it be nice to snack on something just for the taste of it! Some here just can’t take it: they sneak out at night and go back to earth, and they wander into their kitchens and peek into their fridges – oh, there’s nice ham there, and plump, juicy bacon, and a good pork loin, yum... And even if they can’t eat anything until the end of times, when we all experience the actual carnal resurrection, it’s just nice to look at all this stuff. Meanwhile, there isn’t much to look at in heaven. The perpetual light is constantly shining upon us, and it’s so bright one can’t see a thing beyond its luster, which does not matter anyway, since everything here is utterly transcendent, so it can’t be seen. And what’s interesting, despite the fact that the perpetual light sparkles so much faster in outer space, is that whenever it reaches something, it turns out that the darkness has gotten there first. Paradise seems to be the only place where the perpetual light reins superior, which seems to be enough in its own opinion, since paradise is vast— extremely immense. It has to be big enough to fit not only God who is infinitely huge, but also myriads of the saved, billions of them… So one gets to commune with God only once every couple thousand years or so, and at other times one only adores Him from afar. Sure enough, everyone among the faithfully departed would prefer to do it from up close. It is, after all, our only entertainment. And therefore the yearning masses push hard every which way to get closer, and there’s constantly a racket about someone cutting in line. What do you mean, I’m cutting in line? I am not! I was here all along, I just run out for a second to take a quick leak! Well, you damn right I have nothing to take a leak with: thank you so very fucking much for reminding me, and hallowed be thy name, you dumbass holy lamb of God! Whatever! Do you really have to rub it in now? Go bask in your eternal peace and glory! So what if I don’t? Let’s say I went to take a leak just like that, out of habit – what the hell is wrong with that? Eh, if I only had a pair of real hands, I’d teach you how to love thy neighbor like you love thyself, you lame ass of Bethlehem, you son of a saint, you! There’s a waiting list circulating here, and a queue, and a pecking order: the martyrs are the first ones to achieve God’s grace, then the saints, and the popes, then the cardinals – that is how it goes: democracy is a fantasy of the godless, one can’t simply appoint a God in a democratic election! This is how the entire hierarchy originated; it’s unthinkable for a pope to share the roof with the old Jones lady: what on earth would they talk about for all of eternity? Let’s say she would acquire some smarts; but smarts are not something one can acquire, you see. You just have to be born with them! And the Holy Father would for sure totally go nuts in such company, I guess he’d prefer to go straight to hell instead. He’d curse such a lame reward, and since he’s infallible, he’d obviously be right to do so; and then, the whole preestablished harmony thing would just come undone. Blessed are the meek, and blessed are the poor in spirit – true enough, but then again, things have to be kept in check in here, and sometimes pure exaltation in spirit is just not good enough: one has to know how to deal with cherubs by evoking their conscience. Sure, there’s no cash to change hands here, but there’s the saving grace that can be traded. One can spare a bit of it just out of goodness of one’s heart, right? And then, perhaps, a properly compensated cherub would be kind enough to let one get in ahead of the line. It is really hard to explain what this grace thing is all about. One would have to start with Adam and Eve, and with this one time when God got really, really pissed about their eating the apple and He cursed not only these two, but their offspring to come, until the end of days, and so he established the original sin, and then he came to his senses and thought: Well, I took it a bit too far – I was, after all, supposed to be all-merciful – and now, lo and behold, I am acting out even so much worse than Hitler. Hitler, after all, was about to persecute only some ethnic groups on basis of their origin -- me, meanwhile, I have cursed the entire species for all of eternity. Damn right He’s infallible – but He’s also almighty, and that is why He only can be wrong if He wants to, and His mistakes are not really mistakes, but a living proof of His very infallibility. The same, by the way, goes for the Pope. Anyway, He figured, for a single apple, it would be just a bit too much to punish everyone, including all these people who were yet to be born, four or five thousand years after that very apple’s been consumed, and so grace was invented. It’s like a special offer, see? When a baby is born, God opens a savings account for her, and all prayers and good deeds and acts of corporal as well as spiritual mortification can be deposited there, so if one is frugal, one can not only buy one’s way into some paradisiac real estate but also has more than enough of this spiritual dough left to spend. The savages do not really know that they are supposed to get baptized first in order to receive grace—but God simply cannot be blamed for the fact that people wander all around the place, instead of just sticking close to the Mediterranean, where the Holy History takes place. Besides, it was He who inspired priests to go on a mission, but He cannot possibly buy them all private jets and jeeps so they can get to where all the savages live; and these priests wouldn’t buy them themselves, either. Everything costs money—this gilded stuff, and all the paintings, chalices, monstrances, rectories, and so on. It would be much more reasonable to invest in a secure market, that minimizes the risk. Besides, who can even tell if these savages out there will find their way to the good Lord eventually anyway? Humanity lost its collective balls for good. It’s not like good old days, when you could burn anyone at the stake in a regular, godly and decent manner. Today there’s all these meddlesome UNs and international tribunals and peacekeepers everywhere. Nowadays not even a little Pygmy or Jew can be justly and properly set on fire, not to mention a white person, for crying out loud! Oh, there’d be a riot, and all this talk about human rights violations, and yadda-yadda-yadda. Meanwhile, it is the very salvation of an immortal soul that is at stake here! All these do-gooders and human rights fighters will, quite obviously, be thrown down to hell for the rest of eternity, but before this happens, they will do so much damage, and trouble our good Lord with their nonsense so deeply that—damn it, it’s hard to even look at it without crying! Which line? This one, over here… Sure thing, God knows very well what is going on. He sees right through this racket, for He is all-knowing -- but He says nothing. He never says anything; He just rejoices in His eternal and unruffled peace when He sees how the souls of the dearly departed long now for their communion with Him. There was not much longing for it among them before, when they were alive. They’d just go to church on Sundays and do their monthly confession, and that was it. How many times can one do it over and over and over again, this “Lord be with you” thing, and that mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa thing, especially when one is hung over after Saturday night fun and struggling with a headache? One would rather commune with the ladies than with one’s Maker, no? But when there’s no one to commune with, we get to realize that one’s entire life was practically wasted on doing things one did not want to do, and now one has to continue doing them, now and forever, amen. You’re telling me I’ve discouraged you? Fine, that was my plan from the get-go, there’s no denying that. Come on now, get right to it! Breathe in, breathe out! Breathe properly, use your lungs… Aaaand one, aaaand two – in, out, in, out! Good! Well done. Again. My vision cleared and I finally realized that it was Grandma Ika, not the cat, leaning over me. Yet another unsuccessful attempt at suicide. Piotr Milewski is a journalist and a writer. He is currently an U.S. correspondent for the Polish edition of the Newsweek Magazine and for Radio Zet, one of two largest radio networks in Poland. Milewski published three books: Punk – a collection of poems, published in samizdat, 1984; a novel Rok nie wyrok (A Year of the Dog, 2008); and Szkice glanem (Sketching With My Combat Boot, 2009). Przestrzeń została zaplanowana tak, by uwzględnić przechył i uzyskać w Nave Principial równy poziom. Modernistyczna płyta została wyrwana z kontekstu i podniesiona do rangi całości. To raczej wehikuł nowej relacji… nowoczesny zabytek. Przyznanie człowiekowi statusu ofiary sprowadza go do jego zwierzęcej substancji. Sławoj Żiżek, „O wierze”, Warszawa 2008, s. 37., przełożył Bogdan Baran Pralnia Instalacja, ok. 5m W x 7m D x 4m H Wolnostojąca struktura złożona z trzech ścian, trzyczęściowego sufitu i podłogi; większość elementów pokrywa blacha. A produkcja może zatracić wszelką społeczną celowość, by wreszcie potwierdzać i gloryfikować samą siebie....” Każda koszulka posiada certyfikat i numer potwierdzający autentyczność z sygnaturą. Kolor drutu, z którego wykonano płot, zachęca, by go przekroczyć. Może to my zdradzamy narcocorridos? Jest to norma kultury nielegalności. Za płotem leży zwykły szklany neon. Plot wykonany jest z drutu neonowego. Płot sięga do 1/3 wysokości wejścia do Palacio Nacional. W jakiej kolejce... A tamtej... No to do roboty, oddychaj... Normalnie oddychaj, płucami... Raz i dwa, raz i dwa, wdech, wydech. Bardzo dobrze! Jeszcze raz. Moje samobójstwo należało do nieudanych.
