Saint Thomas Aquinas Feast day January 28 Thomas Aquinas came from a wealthy Italian ruling family in the 13th century. At age five, he was sent to a Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino in hopes that someday he would be abbot. But King Frederick III sent his troops to occupy the monastery as a fortress. Thomas then transferred to the University of Naples, where he came into contact with the Dominicans. Their life of prayer and study fascinated him, and he was determined to join them. His family was shocked that Thomas would join a group of poor friars. His mother sent his brothers after him. They kidnapped and imprisoned him for more than a year at a family castle. Nothing would shake his resolution to enter the Dominicans. Finally, Thomas’s family gave up on discouraging him from becoming a priest, and in 1244, he joined the order. Thomas studied under Albert the Great. In class, his silence during discussions and his large size earned him the nickname “the dumb ox.” Thomas became well known for his writings in philosophy and theology. His most famous work, the Summa Theologiae, contains five volumes of thought on all the Christian mysteries. It is said that no one has equaled the depth of understanding and clear reasoning that Thomas showed. His love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament led him to write prayers and hymns that are still used to honor the Eucharist. But this brilliant man was very humble. He knew that all his gifts came from God. While celebrating Mass on December 6, 1273, he received a revelation from God. After that, he stopped writing. He said that all he had written was so much straw after what he had seen in the revelation. Thomas died at age 49 on his way to the Council of Lyons, France. Pope Gregory X had asked him to come. Saint Thomas Aquinas is a Doctor of the Church and patron of Catholic schools. St. Mary’s Parish News Third Sunday of Ordinary Time Mark 1:14-20 Jesus calls the fishermen, Simon and Andrew, James and John, to be his disciples. Background on the Gospel Reading Today we begin a continuous reading of Mark's Gospel that will carry us through this segment of the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. Remember that in Cycle B of the Lectionary, most of the Gospel readings are taken from the Gospel according to Mark. The Gospel of Mark does not begin with a narrative about Jesus' birth. Instead Mark begins by reporting on the preaching of John the Baptist. John is described as the voice in the wilderness sent to prepare the way of the Lord. Immediately after describing the work of John the Baptist, Mark reports on Jesus' baptism and his temptation in the desert. Jesus' public ministry begins after the arrest of John the Baptist. Mark wants his readers to understand the important connection between the end of the ministry of John the Baptist and the beginning of Jesus' own ministry. As we learn at the beginning of today's Gospel reading, Jesus preaches the Kingdom of God in continuity with the preaching of John the Baptist. Like John the Baptist, Jesus' pronouncement of the kingdom is a call to repentance. Yet Jesus' preaching is greater than John's. Jesus begins the time of fulfillment; the Kingdom of God is already here. This will be demonstrated again and again, both in Jesus' words and in the actions that follow. Jesus' healings and forgiveness of sins are signs of the Kingdom of God that he announces in his teaching. In contrast to last week's Gospel, in Mark's Gospel Jesus takes the initiative in calling his first disciples. As mentioned last week, it was more typical of first-century rabbinical schools for students to seek out rabbis, asking to be their disciples. In Mark's Gospel, Jesus breaks with this tradition and invites his disciples to learn from him. Jesus is said to have first called four fishermen—Simon, Andrew, James, and John. Simon and Andrew are brothers. Jesus promises that he will make them “fishers of men.” James and John are also brothers. Mark does not report Jesus' words of invitation to them, but he does report that they left their fishing immediately; their father, Zebedee, was left behind in the boat. Mark's Gospel is told with a great sense of urgency and immediacy. Jesus is a person of action, and events occur in rapid succession. We see this in today's Gospel. Time is of the essence; the fishermen immediately put aside their livelihood to become Jesus' disciples. The Kingdom of God is here and now. The time of fulfillment is at hand. How might our lives be different if we more fully shared this sense of the immediacy of God's kingdom? ¿Qué quieres a cambio?". Ogłoszenia Parafialne III Niedziela Zwykła Gdy Jan został uwięziony, Jezus przyszedł do Galilei i głosił Ewangelię Bożą. Kiedy chłopiec miał 5 lat, rodzice oddali go w charakterze oblata do opactwa na Monte Cassino. Albert Wielki (+ 1260). Tam przyjął święcenia kapłańskie. Po chlubnym ukończeniu studiów przełożeni wysłali Tomasza do Paryża, by na tamtejszej Sorbonie wykładał teologię. Był najpierw bakałarzem nauk biblijnych (1252-1253), z kolei wykładał Sentencje Piotra Lombarda (1253-1255). Zadziwiał wszystkich jasnością wykładów, wymową i głębią. Stworzył własną metodę, w której najpierw wysuwał trudności i argumenty przeciw danej prawdzie, a potem je kolejno zbijał i dawał pełny wykład. Grzegorz X zwołał do Lyonu sobór powszechny. Właściwe Zakonowi zadanie, jakim jest służba Słowu Bożemu w dobrowolnym ubóstwie, znalazło u niego wyraz w długoletniej pracy teologicznej: w gorliwym poszukiwaniu prawdy, którą należy nieustannie kontemplować i przekazywać innym. On jedyny odważył się dać panoramę całej nauki filozofii i teologii katolickiej w systemie zdumiewająco zwartym. Do najważniejszych jego dzieł należą: Summa contra gentiles, czyli apologia wiary przeciwko poganom, Kwestie dysputowane, Komentarz do "Sentencji" Piotra Lombarda, Summa teologiczna i komentarze do niektórych ksiąg Pisma świętego. Zadziwia w nich uniwersalizm podejmowanych zagadnień, głębia i prostota wyjaśnień, błyskotliwość myśli. Płonął synowską miłością do Najświętszej Maryi Panny. Jest patronem dominikanów, księgarni, studentów i teologów; opiekun podczas sztormów. Papież Jan XXII zaliczył go do grona świętych 18 lipca 1323 roku. Papież św. Pius V ogłosił go 11 kwietnia 1567 roku piątym doktorem Kościoła zachodniego. Papież Leon XIII ustanowił go 4 sierpnia 1880 roku patronem wszystkich uniwersytetów i szkół katolickich. St. Mary of Czestochowa Parish - Membership Form Forma Przynależności do Parafii M. B.
