Trudno z czymkolwiek porównaç wra˝enia, jakie
wywo∏uje bezpoÊrednie obcowanie ze sztukà. Wprawdzie
za sprawà nowych technologii ka˝de g∏oÊne dzie∏o
mo˝na w kilka sekund obejrzeç na monitorze w∏asnego
komputera, ale nic nie zastàpi atmosfery realnej galerii
sztuki czy klimatu wielkiego miasta, b´dàcego tyglem
wielu kultur. Po takie w∏aÊnie, autentyczne inspiracje do
Nowego Jorku i Walencji wyje˝d˝ajà laureaci Konkursu
Artystyczna Podro˝ Hestii.
It is hard to compare with anything else the impressions
evoked by directly communing with art. Admittedly,
thanks to new technologies, each famous artwork can
in a matter of seconds be viewed on a screen of a personal
computer. Yet, nothing can replace the atmosphere of
a real art gallery, or the climate of a great city which
is a melting pot of many cultures. It is for such authentic
inspirations that the laureates of Hestia Artistic Journey
competition set out to New York and Valencia.
Kulturowym odniesieniem dla tego przedsi´wzićia sà
podró˝e edukacyjne, w jakie przed wiekami wyprawiano
m∏odych europejskich arystokratów i artystów, by
poznawali Êwiat i sztuk´. Towarzyszy mu przekonanie,
˝e równie˝ dzisiaj mo˝liwoÊç osobistego doÊwiadczania
pozostaje wartoÊcià samà w sobie. Mimo, ˝e ˝yjemy
w czasach globalnej i b∏yskawicznej wymiany informacji,
podró˝e nie przestajà kszta∏ciç. Sà natchnieniem.
The cultural reference to the project is the idea of grand
tours to which, centuries ago, young European noblemen
and artists were sent in order to see the world and its art.
This is accompanied by the belief that also nowadays an
opportunity of personal experience is a value in itself.
Although we happen to be living in the times of global and
immediate information exchange, travel still does educate.
It provides inspiration.
Przyglàdajàc si´ pracom dotychczasowych triumfatorów
Konkursu, widaç jak ró˝norodna jest m∏oda polska
sztuka. Ufam, ˝e ich kolejne dokonania b´dà jà jeszcze
wzbogacaç. W ten sposób Konkurs przyczynia si´ nie
tylko do indywidualnego rozwoju artystycznych
osobowoÊci, ale mo˝e daç wiele wszystkim tym, którzy
we wspó∏czesnej sztuce poszukujà Êwie˝oÊci, wzruszeƒ,
refleksji czy prowokacji.
When considering the works of the competition’s former
prize-winners, one can see how diverse young Polish art is.
I trust that their future achievements will even further add
to this richness. This way, the competition not only
contributes to the individual development of artistic
personalities, it can also offer a lot to all those who
in contemporary art seek freshness, emotions, reflection
or provocation.

Wystawa prac finalistów 9. edycji Konkursu
Konkurs Artystyczna Podró˝ Hestii zosta∏ powo∏any
w 2002 r. z inicjatywy Piotra M. Âliwickiego, Prezesa
Grupy Ergo Hestia, we wspó∏pracy z Akademià Sztuk
Pi´knych w Gdaƒsku. Jest to pierwsze i jak dotàd jedyne
tego typu przedsi´wzićie w Polsce nastawione na
niestandardowà form´ wspierania artystycznego rozwoju
m∏odych talentów. Polega ono na kreowaniu warunków
sprzyjajàcych pog∏´bianiu wiedzy oraz nabyciu cennych
inspiracji.
Siedem edycji Konkursu, w latach 2002-2008, wy∏ania∏o
rokrocznie najzdolniejszych studentów Akademii Sztuk
Pi´knych w Gdaƒsku. G∏ówna nagroda dla zwyci´zców
to miesićzny pobyt w Nowym Jorku. W 2008 r. wzorem
Ergo Hestii hiszpaƒska firma ubezpieczeniowa DKV Seguros
zainaugurowa∏a w Walencji bliêniaczy konkurs, o nazwie
Grand Tour DKV. Wspó∏praca z Hiszpanami zaowocowa∏a
poszerzeniem puli nagród o stypendia w Gdaƒsku i Walencji
oraz organizacjà wystaw prac laureatów w obu krajach.

HESTIA ARTISTIC JOURNEY
9th edition – the exhibition of the finalists’ works
Hestia Artistic Journey was first held in 2002 on the initiative
of Piotr M. Âliwicki, President of the Ergo Hestia Group,
in co-operation with the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdaƒsk.
The Competition is the first, and still the only, such project
in Poland, oriented towards a non-standard form of
supporting the artistic development of young talents.
It consists in creating conditions conducive to expanding
knowledge and gaining valuable inspirations.
Seven previous editions of the Competition, held in the years
2002-2008, selected the most talented students at
the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdaƒsk. The main prize for
the winners is a one month stay in New York. In 2008,
following in the footsteps of Ergo Hestia, DKV Seguros,
a Spanish insurance firm, inaugurated a twin competition
in Valencia. It is entitled Grand Tour DKV. The co-operation
with the Spaniards has resulted in extending the pool of
prizes by scholarships in Gdaƒsk and Valencia as well as
in organising exhibitions of the winners’ works in both
countries.
Po raz pierwszy Konkurs w wydaniu ogólnopolskim
zosta∏ przeprowadzony w 2009 r. we wspó∏pracy
z akademiami sztuk pi´knych w Krakowie, Warszawie,
Poznaniu, Wroc∏awiu, ¸odzi i Katowicach. W tym samym
roku Ergo Hestii przyznano statuetk´ w konkursie „Sztuka
cenniejsza ni˝ z∏oto”, zorganizowanym przez Fundacj´
Commitment to Europe arts&business oraz Narodowy
Bank Polski, za projekt Artystyczna Podró˝ Hestii.
The first nationwide Competition was held in 2009 in
co-operation with Academies of Fine Arts in Cracow, Warsaw,
Poznaƒ, Wroc∏aw, ¸ódê and Katowice. In the same year,
Ergo Hestia received a statuette in the ”Art More Precious
Than Gold” Competition, organised by the Commitment to
Europe arts&business Foundation and the National Bank
of Poland, for the Hestia Artistic Journey project.

The exhibition presents the works of the finalists of this
year’s edition and the 2009 winners of Hestia Artistic

Dla jej twórczoÊci charakterystyczne sà obrazy
w czerni. „Black Paintings” pokazano m.in.
w Nowym Jorku w 2007 r.
Doktorat w sztukach pi´knych na Politechnice
w Walencji (UPV). Obecnie José Luis Cueto
Lominchar jest Dziekanem Wydzia∏u Sztuk
Pi´knych UPV, profesorem malarstwa
i fotografii. Poprzednio zajmowa∏ szereg
kierowniczych stanowisk akademickich,
by∏ m.in. Wicedziekanem ds. Kultury oraz
Wicedziekanem ds. Studentów.
Od 1986 roku jego dzia∏alnoÊç artystyczna
opiera si´ na malarstwie oraz fotografii,
wynikiem czego sà projekty i dzie∏a zwiàzane
z impresjà tradycji wizualnej, nowoczesnoÊcià
oraz kontekstem wspó∏czesnym.

at La Universidad Politécnica de Valencia.
She attended classes at University of
Wisconsin and University of Iowa. In 2001,
she was invited to the Florence Biennale,
where she received an award. She is a very
experienced teacher, lecturing at many art
schools. Her works can be found in numerous
collections, including Charles A. Wustum Art
Museum, Racine, Wisconsin, Weatherspoon
Art Gallery, The University of North Carolina
at Greensboro. Paintings in black are typical
for her work. ”Black Paintings” were shown,
for example, in New York in 2007.
He received a doctorate in Fine Arts
at Valencia Polytechnic (UPV). Currently,
José Luis Cueto Lominchar is the Dean
of the Department of Fine Arts at the UPV,
Professor of Paining and Photography.
Previously, he occupied a number of academic
posts, including the position of Deputy Dean
for Culture and Deputy Dean for Student
Affairs. Since 1986, his artistic activity has
been based on painting and photography,
resulting in projects and works connected
with impressions of visual tradition, modernity
and the contemporary context.

towarzystw ubezpieczeniowych powsta∏ych
w warunkach gospodarki wolnorynkowej
w Polsce. Mecenat artystyczny nale˝y
do programu odpowiedzialnoÊci spo∏ecznej
Grupy Ergo Hestia.

of its market success. The Competition
is his idea.
He graduated from Gdaƒsk University of
Technology and University of Gdaƒsk.
He was a student at Regensburg University.
He is among the creators of the modern Polish
insurance market. Sopockie Towarzystwo
Ubezpieczeƒ Ergo Hestia, established in 1991,
is the second largest property insurer in Poland
and the largest insurance firm created under
the market economy conditions in Poland.
Artistic patronage is part of the social
responsibility programme of the Ergo Hestia
Group.

nad realizacjà wielkoformatowego obrazu
„Ostatnia Wieczerza”, który po raz pierwszy
zosta∏ pokazany publicznoÊci

of the Competition.
He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts
in Gdaƒsk in 1976, having completed a course
of studies at Professor Jacek ˚u∏awski’s Class
of Painting. He received the title of Professor
in 1994. He heads the Chair of Painting
at the Gdaƒsk AFA. He was a co-founder
of Towarzystwo Przyjació∏ Zach´ty, and for
a period of time also its president. “Resisting
mediocrity” has been his principle in life and
art. While referring to his surrealist paintings,
he uses the term “paranoia of modern times”.
In 1995, he began working on a multi-format
painting entitled “The Last Supper”, presented
to the public for the first time ten years later.

pokoleniem ‘68 roku. Jest autorem

w Polsce i za granicà. Bra∏ udzia∏
w presti˝owych ekspozycjach zbiorowych.

at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts.
He completed his studies at the Faculty
of Sculpture of the Warsaw AFA in 1971.
He continues to work for his Alma Mater.
On three occasions: in 1990, 1996 and 1999,
he was elected as the Academy’s rector.
He was the graphic editor of ”Orientacja”
magazine and ”Nowy Wyraz”, a literary
monthly of young writers. He was also
connected with the ’68 generation of poets.
He is the author of numerous individual
exhibitions in Poland and abroad. He took part
in prestigious collective exhibitions. His works
include the Virgin May of Katyƒ bas-relief
at the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw,
sculptures in the new building of the Warsaw
University Library and the monument
of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyƒski in Zalesie.

Ju˝ od koƒca lat 80. uczestniczy w wystawach
w Polsce i zagranicà. Obok obrazów na p∏ótnie
tworzy tak˝e tak zwane malarskie
environtmens, anga˝ujàc kolorystycznie
architektur´ otoczenia, w jakim powstaje
ekspozycja. Maluje wówczas wprost na
Êcianach, tworzàc unikatowe malarskie
przestrzenie. Przyk∏adem jest g∏oÊna realizacja
„Wszystko w porzàdku” w Centrum Sztuki
Wspó∏czesnej w Warszawie z 2003 r.
Painter, he uses photography, sound
and video productions in his works.
He graduated in Architecture at Gdaƒsk
University of Technology and in Painting
at the Gdaƒsk AFA. He completed his studies
in the class of Professor Hugon Lasecki
in 1991. Since the late 1980s he has been
taking part in exhibitions in Poland and abroad.
Apart from paintings on canvass, he also
creates the so-called painting environments,
using the architecture of the exhibition’s
surroundings to paint unique spaces directly
on the walls. An example is the famous work
entitled “Wszystko w porzàdku” created
at the Centre of Contemporary Art in Warsaw
in 2003.

Ka˝dy dzieƒ obfitowa∏ w ekscytujàce doznania.
To miasto jest jak Wie˝a Babel, której us∏yszeç mo˝na
wszystkie j´zyki Êwiata.
Time Square to ulica niegasnàcych Êwiate∏.
Przypomina wielkà Êwiàtyni´ konsumpcji, gdzie zamiast
ikon Êwi´tych „palà si´” neony – logotypy wielkich
koncernów. O ka˝dej porze t∏umne pielgrzymki turystów,
chcàcych zatrzymaç na pamiàtk´ w fotograficznym
szerokim kadrze reklam´ swoich ulubionych produktów.
Zabawiajà tu Batman oraz bohaterowie Muppet Show.
rytm klaksonów i pisków hamulców przygrywajà uliczni
muzycy, jazzmani, bluesmani, beatboxerzy, gitarzyÊci
country i raperzy.
Po dziewićiu godzinach lotu nad Oceanem
Magda i ja zeszliÊmy na làd, by odbytà podniebnà podró˝
kontynuowaç pod ziemià. Metrem udaliÊmy si´ w sam
Êrodek dolnego Manhattanu na 34 ulic´ – Herald Square,
niedaleko której usytuowany by∏ nasz hotel. W samym
Êrodku nocy, kiedy wyszliÊmy na powierzchni´, przed
oczami wyros∏y nam gigantyczne budowle obwieszone
kolorowymi bilbordami i neonami. Miasto hucza∏o
pomimo póênej godziny. Pami´tam, ˝e zatrz´s∏y si´ pode
mnà nogi, gdy spoglàdajàc wysoko w gór´,
uÊwiadomi∏em sobie, ˝e stoj´ pod Empire State Building,
po którym wspina∏ si´ King Kong.
After a nine hours’ flight over the Ocean Magda
and myself entered onto the land so that we could
continue our sky-high journey below the ground. By
subway train we headed towards the very central part of
Manhattan to the 34th alley, Herald Square, not far from
which our hotel was situated. In the deep of the night
when he rose above the ground there appeared in front of
our eyes gigantic building all lit by colorful billboards and
neon lights. The city was rumbling despite it being very
late. I remember my legs shaking as I realized that I was
standing at the feet of Empire State Building, which King
Kong was climbing onto.
Nowy Jork przez kilka pierwszych dni parali˝owa∏
nas swoim ogromem. Oniemia∏em z wra˝enia. To miasto
od pierwszych chwil bombardowa∏o zmys∏ wzroku swym
splendorem. Nigdy wczeÊniej nie myÊla∏em, ˝e udam si´
w podró˝ do Nowego Jorku, który do tej pory by∏ mi
znany jedynie z filmów. ¸atwo by∏o si´ tam zgubiç.
Na szcz´Êcie mog∏em liczyç na pomoc Micha∏a,
serdecznego przyjaciela mieszkajàcego od wielu lat przy
Greenpoint Avenue na Brooklynie.
Throughout the first few days New York would
paralyze us with its magnitude. I went completely
speechless. The splendor of the city literally bombarded
your eye sight. Never before had I expected to be
traveling to New York, which I knew a bit of only from the
movies I saw. It was easy to get lost here. Luckily I could
rely on the helpful hand of Michael, a close friend of mine
living for many years at Greenpoint Avenue in Brooklyn.

– Look, that’s the Statue of Liberty, and next to it is the
Ellis Island, and over there you can see Chrysler Building,
Flatron Building…
– here in Wall Street the great Stock Exchange is located,
and there the “Two Towers” stood.
– Stand Clear of the closing doors, please – said a man
operating the underground.
– We’re getting off here, it’s Chinatown!
Each day abounded in exciting impressions. This
city is like the Tower of Babel, on which you can hear all
the world’s languages.
Time Square, a street of lights that never die.
It looks like a temple of consumption, where instead of
holy icons neon lights are “burning”, logos of huge
companies. At all times crowd-like pilgrimages of tourists
wish to keep in memory of the visit a photograph of the
advert of their favorite products. You will see Batman here
as well as the Muppet Show characters. The rhythm of
horns and the screech of brakes are accompanied by the
melodies of buskers, jazzmen, bluesmen, beatboxers,
country guitarists and rap musicians.
Throughout that month we wished to see as much as
possible:

wÊród drzew, nale˝y si´ wybraç do Central Parku. Jednak
tak˝e i tu s∏ychaç warkot przelatujàcych helikopterów.
Dbajàcy o kondycj´, zapracowani nowojorczycy
zamieniajà tu swój ciasny, s∏u˝bowy uniform na dres do
joggingu. Spotkaç mo˝na i takich, którzy po kilku
rundkach mi´dzy parkowymi alejkami, truchcikiem
wbiegajà do pobliskiej sieci typu fast food.
W pierwszych dniach pobytu zwiedziliÊmy sale
muzealne mi´dzy innymi American Museum of Natural
History, American Indian Museum, The Metropolitan
Museum of Art, Salomon R. Guggenheim Museum,
Museum of Modern Art. Te olbrzymie budowle
wype∏nione sà podrćznikowymi przyk∏adami historii
sztuki. Niemal na ka˝dej Êcianie czy w gablocie widaç
dzie∏a najwybitniejszych twórców ka˝dej epoki, które
dotàd zna∏em jedynie z fotografii.
Podczas pobytu zaprzyjaêniliÊmy si´ z Rocio
Garriga Hinerejos – m∏odà rzeêbiarkà z Walencji,
laureatkà podobnego konkursu do „Artystycznej Podró˝y
Hestii”, organizowanego w Hiszpanii. Wspólnie z nià
zwiedzaliÊmy Nowy Jork. PoznaliÊmy tak˝e Karen

If you wish to take a rest from the concrete jungle
and to spend some time in the woods, you need to go to
the Central Park. However, here, too, you can hear the
whir of helicopters flying over. Those overworked New
Yorkers who take care of their condition change their tight

York. We also met Karen Gunderson, who invited us to
Her apartment for dinner. Later she took us to her studio,
where she showed us Her amazing paintings. The artist
covers the whole area of the canvas with a black color.
The matter of the painting is a factural mark of paintbrush
touches. They create a form that can only brought into
light by appropriate painting’s illumination. The painter
was then finishing a portrait of the President of the USA,
a laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize, Barack Obama.
On the first days of our stay we visited a lot of
museum rooms, including those of: American Museum of
Natural History, American Indian Museum, The
Metropolitan Museum of Art, Salomon R. Guggenheim
Museum, Museum of Modern Art. Those enormous
buildings are filled with textbook examples of the history
of arts. Nearly on each wall and show-case there were to
be found works of the greatest artists of each epoch
which I had known only from photographs.

Avenue serwujà prawdziwie polskiego schabowego.
What stuck in our memory were day-long trips,
marathons across innumerable galleries in the districts:
Chelsea, Soho, Queens, where alongside artists just
embarking on their career the following people presented
their works: Daniel Hirst, Jeff Koons, Felix GonzalezTorres, Roni.
During our stay with we made friends with Rocio
Garriga Hinerejos, a Spanish sculptor from Venice and
laureate of a competition organized in Spain similar to the
Hestia Artistic Journey. Together with her we visited New
Paêdziernik w NY to miesiàc, w którym artyÊci
organizujà dni otwarte swoich pracowni. Wn´trza loftów
na Brooklynie, w Chelsea czy SoHo od wielu lat s∏u˝à
jako studia. Mia∏em okazj´ poznaç wielu m∏odych
Horn, Bill Viola, Larry Rivers or David Hockney.
Often after the tasting of refined art we needed to have a
solid lunch. Luckily, in the Polish district at Greenpoint
Avenue the true Polish pork chop would be served.
October in New York is the month in which artists
organize the so-called open Mouse in their studios. The
interior of lofts in Brooklyn, in Chelsea or SoHo for many

Tonego Levina. Okaza∏o si´, ˝e leci do Polski, gdzie ma
si´ spotkaç z Eddiem Jobsonem i Johnem Wettonem
z Wielkiej Brytanii na trasie koncertowej zespo∏u UK.
Podczas podró˝y mia∏em okazj´ porozmawiaç z artystà.
Trzy dni póêniej by∏em Êwiadkiem niezwyk∏ego koncertu
w Krakowie, w którego repertuarze nie zabrak∏o tak˝e
i klasycznych utworów King Crimson z p∏yty Red.
Po powrocie na Âlàsk ci´˝ko znosiliÊmy zmian´
czasowà. Pami´ç zacz´∏a przekszta∏caç wszystkie moje
wspomnienia jak gdyby w sen… W portfelu nadal
trzymam kart´ umo˝liwiajàcà wst´p na nowojorskà stacj´
metra. To prawie talizman.

DoÊwiadczy∏em na w∏asnej skórze, ˝e najwi´kszà
wartoÊcià sztuki jest jej uniwersalny j´zyk, coÊ, co czyni jà
zrozumia∏à niemal w ka˝dym zakàtku kuli ziemskiej.
Nowy Jork daje si´ odczuç jako miejsce silnych
kontrastów. Ra˝àce s∏oƒce przedzierajàce si´ przez
szczeliny mi´dzy budowlami, graniczy z cieniem przez nie
rzucanym. Miasto oglàdaç mo˝na z dwóch perspektyw.
Sam nie wiem, który widok jest lepszy, który uwidacznia
wićej szczegó∏ów, ten z góry czy z do∏u. 5 Aleja nocà
przemienia si´ w wybieg. W rewii mody uczestniczà
pi´kne panie i panowie. Wszyscy ubrani u najlepszych
projektantów Êwiata. Na ∏awkach natomiast przysypiajà
wyzuci jurorzy; mieszkaƒcy ulicy, ofiary ró˝nych
kryzysów. Przechodzàc wzd∏u˝ ulicy, czuje si´
zmieniajàce co chwila zapachy. Mieszajà si´ wyziewy
wypompowane z ubikacyjnego wentylatora z pi˝mowà
nutà perfum.
Miesiàc bardzo szybko minà∏. Magda i ja wcale
nie chcieliÊmy si´ rozstawaç z Nowym Jorkiem. Nie
widzieliÊmy jeszcze wszystkiego. MyÊl´, ˝e mieszkajàc
tam, mo˝na zobaczyç prawie wszystko. Indianie mawiajà,

one can see nearly everything. Indians tend to say that
New York has such energy that if one visits it on one
occasion, one will return there again.
My return trip was preceded by a real surprise:
when waiting for my flight in the port of Newark, I noticed
in the waiting room a brilliant musician, one of the
members of the King Crimson band, Tony Levin. It turned
out that he was flying to Poland, where he was scheduled
to meet Eddy Jobson and John Wetton of Great Britain on
the concert route of the band UK. During my trip I had an
opportunity to talk to the artist. Three days later
I witnessed an amazing concert in Cracow, the repertoire
of which covered some classical pieces of King Crimson
from the record called ”Red”.
After our return to Silesia we straggled with the
time change. It was like my memory turning all my
recollection into a dream… I my wallet, though, I still keep
the card allowing me the entry into an underground
station, it is something of a charm.
years have been serving as ateliers. I had an opportunity
to meet a lot of young artists and exchange my own
impressions with them. I learnt the hard way that the
greatest merit of art is its universal language, which
makes it comprehensible in nearly part of the globe.
New York can be found to be a place of stark
contrasts. The dazzling sun forcing its way through gaps
between buildings borders on the shade they cast. The
city can be watched from two perspectives. I don’t know
myself which view is better or which shows more details,
the one from the top or from the bottom. At night Alley 5
turns into a catwalk. Beautiful ladies and handsome men
take part in a fashion show, all dressed at the best
designers’ of the world, whilst on benches doze off
divested jurors: the residents of the street, victims of
many a crisis. When walking along the streets, every now
and then one can sense different smells. The stench
pumped out through a toilet ventilator is mixed with the
pajamas note of perfume.
One month passed very quickly. Magda and
myself did not feel like saying goodbye to New York at all.
We had not seen everything. I think that if one lives there,
