So, the hardest part is over – you have made it to university. Here are the top tips you may
need as a student in Great Britain.
4.1.
There are a few things you will soon find you can't live without: a can opener, pills to kill
stomach pain after an occasional visit to a fast food restaurant, a waterproof coat, an MP3
player which will make your stay at the campus more pleasant. Make sure they end up in your
bag before you leave.
4.2.
Just because you're a student doesn't mean you have to live on pot noodles and kebabs.
Try food you have never eaten before. There are lots of meals you can make on very little
cash. You can start with jacket potato and beans or spaghetti bolognese.
4.3.
There is nothing worse than getting to your final year and realising you don't know much
about the place you've lived in for the last couple of years. Look around, walk out of
the campus – don’t watch the locals from a distance, get to know them; you may be pleasantly
surprised.
4.4.
The owner of the flat you are renting can come up with some strange do’s and don’ts but it is
worth staying on his side. Clean windows every Saturday, take out rubbish twice a day and
don’t bring your friends if the arrangement says so. And be careful not to do any damage!
4.5.
There are so many reasons why you will want to travel while at university – to see friends,
go to concerts, or visit your parents. Apply for a Student Railcard instead of buying single
tickets each time you go away. It will save you a third on most tickets for long distance trains.
4.6.
There are so many Freshers who will start university having left a boyfriend or girlfriend
at home. Well, all is not lost. Being apart can make a relationship stronger, so make the most
of the time you spend apart and together. Texting is perfect to help you stay in constant touch.

4.7.
University can offer some of the best experiences of your life. But to make the most of your
time as a student it is wise to see what services they offer. You could write for the university
paper or be the captain of the football team. It's a great way to meet new people and relax.

BREAKFAST CAN WAIT. THE DAY’S FIRST STOP IS ONLINE
Karl and Dorsey Gude can remember simpler mornings not too long ago. They sat together
and chatted as they ate breakfast. They read the newspaper, and the only problem they had was
that their sons preferred watching sports on TV to having a conversation with them.
That was so last century. Today, Mr. Gude wakes up at around 6 a.m. to check his e-mail
and his Facebook and Twitter accounts. Then, he has his breakfast and drives to work.
His sons start each morning with text messages, video games and Facebook.
The new routine quickly became a source of conflict in the family, with Mrs. Gude
complaining that technology was eating into family time. But, eventually, even she started
opening up her laptop after breakfast. ‘Things that I couldn’t accept a few years ago are now
everyday practice in my house,’ she said, ‘like all four of us starting the day on four
computers in four separate rooms.’
Technology has shaken up plenty of life’s routines, but for many Americans it has
completely changed the rituals at the start of the day. ‘I used to wake up, go to the bathroom,
brush my teeth and pick up the newspaper,’ said Naomi Baron, a professor of linguistics at an
American university, who has written about technology’s push into everyday life. ‘But what
I do when I get up now is not like it was in the past: the first thing I do is check my e-mail.’
The Gudes’ sons sleep with their phones next to their beds, so they start the day with text
messages in place of alarm clocks. Mr. Gude sends texts to his two sons to wake them up. ‘We use
texting as an in-house intercom,’ he said. ‘I could just walk upstairs, but they always answer their
texts.’
The Gudes are not happy with how technology has taken over their lives so they recently
began shutting their computers down at weekends to have more family time.

At about eight or nine in the morning I came to the same seat of yellow metal from
which I had looked at the world on the evening of my arrival. Although I was unhappy,
this seat, the peaceful view and the warm sunlight were very pleasant after the hard work,
excitement and terror of the past few days. I was very tired and sleepy, and so I lay down
on the grass and slept.
I woke up a little before sunset and looked for something I could use to open the door
of the white sphinx. Soon I was walking down the hill with an iron stick in my hand. It took
me five or ten minutes. As I came to the sphinx’s pedestal, a most unexpected thing
happened: I found that the metal doors were open. So here, after all my thought about
breaking in, was an easy solution. I stopped in front of the open door, not sure about entering.
I looked inside and saw a small room. In the corner there was the Time Machine. I knew that
I would need levers to start the machine. I touched my pocket; they were there.
I stood and examined the machine, finding pleasure in just touching it, when
it happened. I had expected it. The metal doors suddenly closed with a loud noise. I was
in the dark. I was sure the Morlocks thought I couldn’t get out. But there were things that they
didn’t know. I smiled.
I could hear them laughing softly as they came towards me. I didn’t panic and I tried
to strike a match. I only had to fix the levers and then disappear like a ghost. But I had
forgotten one little thing. You could only light those matches by striking them against the
box, which I didn’t have.
You can imagine how all my calm disappeared. The little creatures were close to me.
I hit them with the levers and began to get into the seat of the machine. Then one hand
touched me and then another. After that I simply had to fight against their fingers for my
levers and at the same time feel for the places where they fitted.
One lever, in fact, almost got away from me. As one of the Morlocks held my hand,
I had to hit him in the dark with my head. This was an even more dangerous fight than
the fight I already had with a Morlock in the forest.
But at last the lever was fixed and I pulled it. The little hands fell away from me.
The darkness soon changed to grey light. I was travelling in time again.
