Graveland - Epilogue
„A New Beginning”
The „Epilogue” demo is somehow a new chapter in Graveland history. I hear a distant echoes of
upcoming „In the Glare of Burning Churches” in it. The music on this material is a typical
example of a tale commonly entitled „How it all began”. It's far from being perfect but it's all
about passion, atmosphere and an idea. Back then it was something new on the Polish scene.
That were the days when death metal played the main role, but under the influence of the
Norwegian scene something started to change. First black metal hordes began to emerge and
so did black metal itself. Ok, let's get back to „Epilogue”. While listening to this demo the first
thing that strikes you are the keyboard parts of each of the compositions as well as the intro and
outro of the demo (it reminds me of the one from the second demo by Behemoth, but it's not a
surprise because at that time Rob Darken was supporting the Pomeranian horde with his art).
They are majestic, dark and creates an atmosphere that is, without a doubt, one of a kind.
Moving further, vocals brings back the momory of that ones from good, old Beherit, low and
hoarse, it just fits here. Guitars are fading a bit overhelmed by keyboard parts and drum
machine (that's how it looked like unfortunately, not everyone was able to find a drummer or to
afford a drum kit, you were forced to deal with it in some way), but it's not that bad, the overall
impression is good and the material in general is interesting. I was wondering if that almost 19
minutes stuff is not too short and so on but it's ok the way it is. Demo recordings shouldn't be
long. They are supposed to present the band, its essence and that's how it looks like here. That
is how the beginnings of Graveland looked like and each fan of dark arts should check it out.
That were the sparks of future fire.
„Nowy początek”
Demo „Epilogue” jest w dorobku Graveland czymś w rodzaju nowego rozdziału. Słyszę w nim
odległe echa nadchodzącego „In the Glare of Burning Churches”. Materiał na nim zawarty jest
typowym przykładem historii pt. „I tak to się zaczęło”. Do ideału bardzo daleko ale nadrabia się
pasją, atmosferą i pomysłowością. Wtedy na polskiej scenie bm było to coś nowego, do tej pory
rządził niepodzielnie death metal, a pod wpływem norweskiej sceny zaczynało się coś dziać,
wykluwały się pierwsze black metalowe hordy a gatunek zaczynał powoli raczkować po naszej
ziemi. Wróćmy do „Epilogue”. Słuchając tego dema na pierwszy plan wychodzą partie
klawiszowe poszczególnych utworów intra oraz outro (przypomina bardzo te z drugiego dema
Behemoth, ale nie ma co się dziwić bo w tamtym czasie Rob Darken wspomagał pomorską

hordę swoją twórczością). Są majestatyczne, mroczne, czym tworzą niepowtarzalny klimat. Co
się tyczy reszty, wokal przynosi na myśl ten ze starego, dobrego Beherit, niski i chrypliwy, co tu
dużo mówić, pasuje i tyle w temacie. Partie gitar znikają nieco przyćmione klawiszami i
maszyną perkusyjną (niestety, ale tak to bywało, nie od razu miało się perkusistę czy samą
perkusję, trzeba było sobie jakoś radzić), ale specjalnie to nie boli, i ostateczny efekt jest na
plus, szału nie ma ale zaciekawia. Zastanawiałem się czy te niecałe 19 minut to nie za krótko,
czy nie pozostaje jakiś niedosyt, ale nie. Tego typu nagrania nie powinny być długie. Mają
przedstawić zespół, przekazać jego esencję i tak jest w tym przypadku. Tak wyglądały początki
Graveland i każdy zwolennik mrocznej sztuki powinien się z tym zapoznać, to były iskry
przyszłego ognia.
