The Shaker hymn describes a circular journey from
innocence to innocence with characteristic brevity: " 'Tis
a gift to be simple, 'tis a gift to be free. 'Tis a gift to come
down where we ought to be."
This journey is easier sung about than done. It takes
humility and time to recover a second innocence. Titles,
positions of honor, money, and power are not
requirements of the kingdom of God. Jesus says and
demonstrates in today's Gospel that members of God's
kingdom must hold in their embrace the most
inconsequential of persons, for that person is identified
with Jesus. This attitude ran counter to the intuition of
the world of Jesus' time, as it does ours.
The simplicity set forth by Jesus requires the shedding of
unnecessary, unimportant, false, and burdensome
demands that earthly power insists on. Membership in
the kingdom is light enough to put a song in our heart.

THE JUST PERSON
The just person is set before us in the reading from the
book of Wisdom, portrayed as the prey. The stalkers are
the cynical, ones, who are incapable of joy. The just one,
who already mourns the loss of goodness and decency in
the land, does not need the cynics to pile on. But pile on
they do, if only to see whether God will come to the
rescue. It is no wonder that New Testament writers liked
the book of Wisdom. The words today reflect cynics of
another time who say that if the crucified one was the
Messiah, he could save himself (Luke 23:35).
THE LITTLE ONE
Jesus had just told his apostles that he must suffer and
die and thus enter into his glory. But this was lost on the
apostles, as they chattered on about who would be first in
the kingdom.
When Jesus asked, they were embarrassed to tell him
about their childish "I'm first" conversation. So much
hung in the balance, and they were worried about rank.
So it was that he told them plainly that the one who
served others would be first. Next he showed them. He
gathered into his arms a small child, someone of little
value and importance to people who felt that theirs was
important work in the world. But Jesus tells them that in
accepting the little ones they accept him.
If we should want to know how to accept the little ones,
we can look to the epistle of James that tells us exactly
what attitude to bring. Be innocent, peaceable, lenient,
docile, sympathetic, kind, impartial, sincere. Wouldn't
we love to know quality people like this? Who would not
be drawn to them?

Collection Count for Sept. 13, 2015
The Liturgy of the Word for Children will begin on
Sunday, October 11th at the 10:00AM Mass. This is
a simpler form of the readings to help our children
better understand the Sacred Scripture. Children
Pre-K to 4th Grade are welcome to attend. The
children will leave the main church after the
Collect and return after the Intercessions.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Toward the end of the second century, a
churchman in North Africa, Tertullian, described an
early form of penance. Imagine if it had survived!
There were three steps to this very public ritual.
The unfortunate sinner was brought before the
community in an itchy garment of goat’s hair. The
communities of the day were small and intimate,
and everyone knew everyone else. The shame of
exposure for a big sin—murder, idolatry, or
adultery—would have been profound. The penitent
would beg the community for prayers of
intercession, and then go sit in a place assigned to
penitents. After this public confession, the penitent
would be assigned some discipline, usually a
relatively severe fast, or the wearing of distinctive
garb. This remedy for sin was for a certain period of
time, or at least until the bishop (every small
community has its own bishop) judged that enough
was enough. Then the person would be readmitted
to the eucharistic community, although Tertullian
doesn’t tell us how. Probably the bishop tenderly
placed his hands on their heads, precisely where
they were anointed at baptism. We do know that
the readmission of penitents to the eucharistic
table became in some churches a great celebration,
and there are records from Spain of bishops leading
penitents in a dance‑like processional into the
eucharistic hall on Holy Thursday.

This week the World Meeting of Families takes place in Philadelphia culminating with the arrival of Pope Francis on
Saturday and the Papal Mass on the Parkway on Sunday. It should be an exciting week in our city and archdiocese. If
anyone is still interested in going to either event, please call the Rectory this week. Hopefully I was able to obtain more
tickets. I am writing this on Monday and was told that if there were any tickets available, I would be able to get them on
Friday. I will be attending the Mass on Sunday and con-celebrate the Mass with the Holy Father at 4:00 PM. I will offer
my Mass for your intentions. Fr. Konstanty will celebrate the 8:00, 10:00 and 11:30 Masses next Sunday so I can go. I
have to be at the Mann Music Center at 7:00 AM, go through security there and take the bus they are providing us to the
Art Museum. After arrival there, I have to wait until 2:30 to be seated and then wait for Mass to begin at 4:00. It’s going
to be a long day but it’s something that I want to do. I may never again get the opportunity to celebrate Mass with the
Pope. We ask you to pray this week for the success of the World Meeting of Families and for the safety of Pope Francis
and all those present for this great event. This weekend, we will light 3 special vigil candles in front of his image in the
Chapel, asking God to bless him and take care of him during this special event.
We thank those who purchased Lottery Tickets for the month of August. A total of 488 tickets were sold at $5.00 each
which gave us an income of $2,440.00. Paid out prize money amounted to $500.00, thus giving us a profit of $1,940.00.
You can purchase these tickets after Masses on Sundays or at the Rectory during office hours. If you can sell a few, call
the Rectory and speak to Terry. Every little bit helps to maintain our parish.
Our next Dynamic Catholic Session is on Tuesday, September 29th, at 7:00 PM , in our auditorium. Our topic is
STUDY. Even if you have not attended either of the first two sessions or missed one, you are invited to attend. We ask
that in preparation for that evening that you read Chapter 3 on “Study” in the book The Four Signs of a Dynamic
Catholic, pages 75 – 106. If you need a copy of the book, please call or stop at the Rectory. We would be most happy to
give you one.
Baptismal Class will be held on Monday, September 28th, in the Chapel, at 7:00PM. Parents and Godparents
who wish to have their children baptized must attend this class to prepare them for the reception of this
sacrament. Expectant parents may also attend this class. Please call the Rectory to enroll so we can make
adequate arrangements.
OUR DYNAMIC CATHOLIC THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: When the gifts are being brought to the altar, as
the priest is preparing them, place your life on that altar – offer your whole self to God, your joys and troubles, every
situation, all the people you love, everything that is troubling you, everything that you own – place it all on the altar
before God and ask him to transform it.
AND A SECOND THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Jesus wants to turn your life upside down—which, as it turns
out, will be right side up .

archidiecezji.
Będę uczestniczył we mszy w niedzielę i co-odprawianie Mszy z Ojcem Świętym o 4:00 PM. Ofiaruję te Msze
w waszej intencji. Ks. Konstanty będzie odprawiał o 8:00, 10:00 i 11:30 Msze w najbliższą niedzielę, więc mogę
do odprawienia Mszy z Papieżem.
Jeśli chciałbyś sprzedać kilka, zadzwoń do plebanii i zapytaj o Terry. Loteria ta pomaga utrzymać naszą parafię.
Nasze następne spotkanie odbędzie się Wtorek 29 Września, o godzinie 7: 00 wieczorem w naszej sali. Temat
ołtarzu przed Bogiem i pros Go, aby je przekształcił.
I druga myśl tygodnia: Jezus chce przewrócić twoje życie do góry nogami, tak że gdy przewróci, prawda
będzie na górze.
