“Revitalization Movements and Christian Missions in the New World”.

European conquest and colonization of the American continent gave impulse to longterm processes of contact, competition and mutual enrichment of radically different cultures
and lifestyles. Among the various forms of cultural syncretism, the problem of hybrid
religions and cults has long attracted the interest of historians and anthropologists. The article
aims to cast new light on traditional interpretations of the „revitalization“ movements,
instigated by activities of Christian missionaries in the frontier regions of American colonies,
through a detailed study of two such movements of eighteenth century that took place among
the Tarahumaras in northern part of contemporary Mexico and among the Delawares in
eastern North America.

dały
impuls
długotrwałemu procesowi kontaktu, współzawodnictwa i wzajemnego wzbogacenia
radykalnie różnych kultur i stylów życia. Wśród różnorodnych form kulturowego
synkretyzmu, problem hybrydowych religii i kultów od dawna przyciągał zainteresowanie
historyków i antropologów. Zadaniem niniejszego artykułu jest rzucić nowe światło na
tradycyjne interpretacje ruchów „odnowy“, sprowokowanych przez działania chrześcijańskich
misjonarzy
w
przygranicznych
regionach
amerykańskich
kolonii.
W
tym
celu
przeprowadzone zostało szczegółowe studium dwóch takich ruchów XVIII wieku, które
miały miejsce wśród Tarahumarów w północnej części współczesnego Meksyku oraz wśród
Delawarów we wschodniej części Ameryki Północnej.
