Invites all the interested scholars to participate in a two-day conference:
Representations of illness in culture and language
8th – 9th December 2016
The aim of our conference is to analyse the cultural representations of
illness, especially the new literary genre of illness narratives (or
pathographies), cultural associations accompanying various medical
disorders, analysis of phrases that have entered everyday language from
medical discourse as well as the study of linguistic items which refer to
illnesses and the body in formal and informal registers (such as
euphemisms, dysphemisms, colloquialisms).
The suggested topics might include but are not limited to:
-representations of illness and disability in culture (literature, film, media)
and history;
-stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination of the ill and the disabled
- stigmatisation of the ill;
- illness and death in religion (punishment for sins vs the value of suffering)
- cultural representations of the medical profession;
-medicalisation and pathologisation of ordinary physiological processes and
emotional states (grief, mourning, aging, menstruation, pregnancy, childbearing, menopause, etc.);
- medical metaphors in everyday language and the language of the media;
- adveriting of health-care products and medications
- teaching medical language
- medical discourse as a linguistic phenomenon
-conceptualisation of illness, aging, death and dying
- medical professiolect - specificity
ABSTRACTS:
We invite abstracts of up to 200 words. Deadline for topic proposals and
abstracts (with affiliation) is 10th October 2016. The organising committee
will notify all the potential conference participants about the acceptance of
their proposals by 20th October. The official languages of the conference are
Polish and English.

FEE:
The conference fee covers conference materials, coffee breaks and two
lunches.
A selection of conference papers will be published by Naukowe Wydawnictwo
Piotrkowskie.
Conference fee 250 PLZ (55 euro)
Doctoral students 200 PLZ (40 euro)
The account number and further details will be sent to the conference
participants in the next circular.
ACCOMMODATION:
We can assist the participants in their hotel bookings or arrange
accommodation at the local Halls of Residence (budged but comfortable).
Both are within a walking distance from the venue.
