Introduction
The realities of global economy stimulate the development of many new forms of
economic actors. These include not only national institutions, but also organizations
on a sub-national (e.g. German lands), supra-national (e.g. ASEAN) and nonnational level (transnational corporations and non-governmental organizations). All
the above actors share the responsibility of shaping the international relations, also
through economic activities.
The present shape of economic relations between Europe and Asia is characterized,
on the one hand, by cooperation based on political incentives formulated by ASEAN
and EU, regional and bilateral agreements, providing support and funds for developing
countries, as well as cooperation between companies and NGOs. On the other hand,
the aforementioned actors compete for political influence and human, capital and
natural resources indispensable for economic development, as well as technologies
and information that offer economic advantage on global markets.
The issues indicated above have determined the organization of material
submitted for the third international scientific conference “Asia-Europe. Partnership
or rivalry?”, organized under the auspices of the Department of International
Economic Relations of the Wrocław University of Economics under the patronage
of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Polish Republic, the Ministry of Higher
Education and Science and the Embassy of Japan in Poland. The submissions not
only reflect the multifaceted interest of the participating researchers of the Asia and
Pacific region representing a number of Polish scientific centres, but also demonstrate
the intricate and compound nature of problems and issues faced by researchers and
scientific analysts in relation to the subject at hand.
I sincerely hope that the collection of papers presented herein will be a valuable
contribution to the intellectual reflection on the present shape of relations between
Asian and European partners. I also believe that the range of subjects contained
herein will stimulate scientific discussion and provoke further interest in the subject.
I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to all the reviewers for their
judicious and inspiring input that helped maintain the appropriate factual level of the
articles presented herein.
