HOPEFUL EXPECTATION
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Our liturgical year begins with the season of Advent a time of hopeful expectation of the coming of the Lord.
On the First Sunday of Advent we look forward to the end
of time when we will awaken to the dawn of Christ’s new
day.
Today we hear Isaiah speak of a day when God’s
power will have brought universal peace and God’s Word
will have instructed all people, radiating God’s
“light” (teachings) into all of human society. Only when
humanity walks “in the light of the LORD” (Isaiah 2:5),
when all people desire to be instructed “in [God’s]
ways” (Isaiah 2:3), will the world be set aright and our
deepest longings fulfilled. The reading from Romans calls
us to “awake from sleep” for this final “day is at
hand” (Romans 13:11, 12). Together this Sunday’s
scriptures proclaim our Christian faith that Jesus is the
One who will finally come to fulfill God’s plan of
salvation.
Advent calendars appear now in many homes, and newfangled formats are even available on line. Children have
fun opening the doors and windows keyed to the days
counting down to Christmas. Behind each door is a
picture related to the Christmas mystery, perhaps a
scripture verse or saying, but more and more these days
something totally unconnected to religious life, like a
small toy or a chocolate treat, appears instead. The
Advent calendar is not very old as traditions go. We can
trace it back to German-speaking Christians, both
Protestant and Catholic. Lutherans might have originated
the custom by placing chalk marks on doors starting
December 1, lighting candles every day, or placing a new
religious picture on the wall each day during Advent. The
oldest known hand-made calendar goes back to 1851, and
the first printed ones appeared in 1908 in Germany with
Bible verses behind the doors. By far the most interesting
calendar is a building, the town hall (Rathaus) of
Gengenbach in Germany’s Black Forest. Every year the
townspeople invite an illustrator of children’s books to
create twenty-four paintings or motifs for each of the
twenty-four main windows of the building. Every night
the people gather to see a new window opened and
illuminated.
Very few commercial Advent calendars pay much
attention to the core values of our liturgical calendar: the
pivotal place of Sunday, the importance of Advent feasts
like Saint Lucy and Saint Nicholas, and the clear shift in
tone on December 17 from Advent longing and
preparation toward imminent hope in Christ’s coming.
That kind of creativity is left up to you!

Rozumiejcie chwilę obecną: teraz nadeszła dla was
godzina powstania ze snu. Teraz bowiem zbawienie jest
bliżej nas, niż wtedy, gdyśmy uwierzyli. Noc się posunęła,
a przybliżył się dzień. Odrzućmy więc uczynki ciemności,
a przyobleczmy się w zbroję światła. żyjmy przyzwoicie
jak w jasny dzień: nie w hulankach i pijatykach, nie w
rozpuście i wyuzdaniu, nie w kłótni i zazdrości. Ale
przyobleczcie się w Pana Jezusa Chrystusa i nie
troszczcie się zbytnio o ciało, dogadzając żądzom.

NOWEGO
ROKU
Nowy rok kościelny, liturgiczny
rozpoczyna się dokładnie od pierwszej niedzieli
Adwentu, a kończy na sobocie 34. tygodnia zwykłego.
Po drodze mamy w nim okazję przeżyć okres Bożego
Narodzenia, czas Wielkiego Postu i Wielkanocy i
najdłużej trwający, równie obfity w przeżycia - okres
zwykły. Już na pierwszy rzut oka widać, że choć rok
kalendarzowy ma tyle samo dni i tygodni, co rok
liturgiczny - to różnią się wieloma elementami (początek
roku liturgicznego przypada na koniec listopada lub
początek grudnia). Podstawową różnicą jest jakby
zupełnie inna filozofia: rok liturgiczny ma na celu głosić
chwałę Bożą i uświęcać wiernych. Stąd też cała historia
zbawienia, przekazana nam na kartach Biblii, wtłoczona
zostaje w ramy jednego roku, byśmy mogli stopniowo
odsłaniać całe Misterium Chrystusa: oczekiwanie,
zwiastowanie, nadejście, działalność, śmierć, powrót,
nowe życie. Co więcej: na kontemplację tych Bożych
tajemnic mamy nie jeden rok, ale tyle lat, ile Pan Bóg da
nam żyć. Bo każdy rok jest okazją, byśmy na te
wydarzenia spojrzeli inaczej, nieco dojrzalej. Co roku
jesteśmy w jakimś sensie inni - inaczej przeżywamy
Adwent czy Boże Narodzenie, mając lat 5, 18, 35 czy 80.
Nasz udział w roku liturgicznym porównuje się czasem
do spirali: kręcimy się w kółko - ale każdy dzień jest na
innym miejscu tego koła. Cała chrześcijańska mądrość
polega na tym, by ten ruch w koło postępował ciągle w
górę - jak w spirali, to znaczy: by przeżycia roku
liturgicznego z roku na rok były coraz głębsze, bardziej
zrozumiałe, wnoszące w nasze życie kolejne, nowe
wartości duchowe, dające nam szansę weryfikowania
naszego postępowania.

LECTURAS DE HOY

ESPERAR CON GOZO
Nuestro año litúrgico comienza con el tiempo de
Adviento, una temporada de expectativa por la venida del
Señor. En el Primer Domingo de Adviento anticipamos el
fin de los tiempos cuando despertaremos al amanecer del
nuevo día de Cristo.
Hoy escuchamos a Isaías hablar del día en que el poder
de Dios habrá traído paz universal y la Palabra de Dios
habrá instruido a todos los pueblos, irradiando la
“luz” (enseñanzas) de Dios a toda la raza humana. Sólo
cuando la humanidad camina “a la luz del Señor” (Isaías
2:5), cuando todos los pueblos deseen marchar “por sus
sendas” (Isaías 2:3), el mundo se enderezará y nuestros
más profundos anhelos serán cumplidos. La lectura de
Romanos nos llama a despertar “del sueño” porque la
salvación “está más cerca” (Romanos 13:11, 12). Las
lecturas de este domingo proclaman nuestra fe cristiana
en que Jesús es Aquél que al final vendrá a dar
cumplimiento al plan de salvación de Dios.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Durante tres años he estado compartiendo muchas
costumbres y tradiciones Hispanas, Latinas y
Latinoamericanas. Este nuevo año litúrgico deseo
expandir el horizonte de Tradiciones de nuestra fe, más
allá de lo nuestro, para ver las raíces y prácticas de
nuestra tradición católica-cristiana. Los cristianos
católicos, ortodoxos y de otras denominaciones,
consideramos que el mensaje de Dios no puede limitarse a
un solo libro, pues la revelación divina nos llega mediante
la Tradición y la Sagrada Escritura. Debemos saber que
por Tradición no estamos hablando de costumbres y
prácticas religiosas, tales como las posadas, el rosario u
otras devociones. Más bien, la Tradición (con mayúscula)
se ocupa de la Doctrina oral del Evangelio que ha sido
transmitida de una generación a otra, a partir de los
Apóstoles. Parte de esa Tradición fue escrita en la
Sagrada Escritura (Biblia) pero no toda. Como nos lo dice
Juan el Evangelista “Hay además otras muchas cosas que
hizo Jesús. Si se escribieran una por una, pienso que ni
todo el mundo bastaría para contener los libros que se
escribieran” (Juan 21:25).
