A Mother’s Love
God must have known
there would be times
We’d need a gentle touch,
A tender, understanding
heart
To love us very much.
God must have known we’d need someone
To listen to our cares,
To comfort and remember us.
So in boundless wisdom,
God sent us from above
The dearest blessing in the world
A mother’s precious love.
God bless all the New Moms, the Seasoned
Moms, the God-Moms, the Moms-inWaiting, and those who are like Moms.
Happy Mother’s Day to all.

who are serving our country in the

Pfc. Toribio J. Urian, U.S. Army

Robert E. Kelley, U.S. Army
Erik T. Herrera, U.S. Air Force

Let us pray.
God of love and compassion, before this season of
unrest, we had grown comfortable with thinking of them
only as they relate to us - as our parents and spouses, sons
and daughters, brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends.
Today, history and circumstance, force us to release
them into your care and into our country’s service. We
pray for them and bless them in your name. Grant them
your protection and a safe return home. Amen.
Bulletin reminder:
All notices for the May 18th bulletin need to be in the rectory
no later than 9 a.m. on Monday, May 12th.
You may drop your bulletin notices off at the rectory in an
envelope labeled “bulletin” or you may fax them to 622-5903.
The e-mail address for bulletin notices is [email protected].
As members of the parish faith
community, it is our responsibility to
remember both in concrete and spiritual
ways those who cannot celebrate with
us each week because they are ill.
Those who are sick in turn, remember
all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We
experience many blessings because of their remembering
us. And so ... please remember in your prayers:

Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish
Through the stewardship of our parishioners and visitors last week, which was the third Sunday of Easter and the
first weekend of May, we received $15,886.56 in the regular offertory collection. We appreciate your support of our
parish ministries and programs. In addition to your weekly offering, we received $1,210.50 in our monthly Building &
Maintenance envelopes and several monthly pledge payments totaling $4,278.35 toward our Sharing Christ’s Gifts capital improvement campaign. For all of your support of the parish, thank you.
Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, grandmothers and Godmothers of the parish; may you have a wonderful day to
enjoy and be blessed for all that you do for your families and others.

When “Making Up” Missed Offertory Collections
We really appreciate your commitment to St. Ferdinand Church and to the practice of proper stewardship when you
“make up” your regular contribution for missed Sundays or months that you are away from the parish. We also are very
grateful to the homebound who mail in their contribution each week / month. Your personal support of the parish is
critical to our mission.
We wish to point out, however, that it is not really necessary to include all the empty envelopes from previous weeks
or months. If you wish, you could write a note on the bottom of the envelope, but even that is not required. If you regularly give $7 or $15 a week, and then a few weeks from now you offer $21 or $45, it will be clear when we look at
your record that you were away for a couple of weekends and that you were making up missed collections. What is
important is that you use one envelope from each of the different funds; for example, a regular Sunday envelope, an
Easter envelope, and a monthly Building & Maintenance envelope. The preferred way would be to write one check for
the total of the missed and current Sundays, and then individual checks for the particular holy day or special funds by
category. This makes our work easier and the intention of your gift much more clear. If you do wish to include only
one check, then please include ONE envelope from each fund so that we can “split” your gift to each of the intended
categories, as necessary. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.
Congratulations to our pastor,
Father David J. Cortesi,
who celebrated his
40th Anniversary of Ordination on May 1st.
May God bless you with every good gift.
"THANKS TO ALL"
Thanks to everyone who helped in making the April
27th, 2003 Pancake Breakfast a great success. We
appreciated all who helped not only on the day of the
event but also those who gave their time during the days
and evenings leading up to the breakfast.
A special thanks to the Ushers and their spouses, the
Girl Scouts, CRHP, CCD and all the others who helped
in setting up, preparing and serving the food, to those
who ran the raffle and to those who stayed and helped
in the cleanup. !!! Thank You !!!
To everyone who attended (650+) - Without you it
would not have been a success.
Again, "Thank You All".

21st ANNUAL GOLF OUTING
AT
Village Green CC - Mundelein, IL
Saturday June 7th, 2003
May 2003
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Each year at Mother’s Day, I ask the parishes and parishioners to support the vital work of Catholic Charities of the
Archdiocese of Chicago, for you are helping to fulfill our
Gospel mandate to care for the poor.
Mother’s Day is an appropriate time for Catholic Charities’
Annual Appeal, because Catholic Charities acts like a mother
who is always caring, aware of the needs of her children, and
helping everywhere she is needed.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, we take time to appreciate
the extraordinary gifts of life and love that mothers bestow on
their children. Mothers have the privilege of sheltering and nurturing life from its very beginning, affording their children the
security and confidence that they need to thrive.
When we were helpless, our parents provided all the basics
of life for us: food, clothing, shelter, education, encouragement.
They were “all about help,” and fortunately for us, “just about
everywhere!”
So too, is Catholic Charities, annually providing food for
tens of thousands of mothers, infants and children who are poor
or hungry; shelter for hundreds of homeless families; and help
and hope for families struggling to become or stay self-sufficient. Thousands of home-bound or low-income seniors are visited, fed and comforted, live in affordable Catholic Charities
senior residences, or receive services to remain in their own
homes.
In increasing numbers, families and individuals are coming
to Catholic Charities in confidence, trusting that we can help
them as they confront great difficulty. I come to you in confidence, gratefully depending on your generosity to assist them
through Catholic Charities.
On this special decay for mothers, children of all ages take
the opportunity to “rise up and call them blessed!” (Proverbs
31:28)
I ask that you remember the struggling mothers, grandmothers and families who need your help. Then you and your
families will enjoy the blessing that Jesus promised to “the
blessed of my Father,” who care for “the least of my brothers
and sisters.” (Matthew 25:24)
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago

World Communications Day
RENEWING THE
PLEDGE
Bishops of the United States, in Renewing the Mind of the Media, call on us to encourage the media to
MIND OF THE The
portray what is truthful and good and to discourage them from uses that are harmful. This year Pope John Paul
MEDIA
II chose as the theme for world Communications Day “the communications media at the service of authentic
peace in the light of Pacem in Terris.” In this landmark encyclical written 40 years ago, Blessed John XXIII
wrote that peace will be only “an empty-sounding word,” if it is not founded on truth, justice, love and lived out in freedom (cf. #
167). He also pointed out the influence of the media, “which enable the nations to know each other better.” He said that truth
demanded that communications media be used with “objectivity.”
To help exert a positive influence on the media in their role a potential builders of a civilization of peace and love, please sign the
pledge below and return it in next week’s collection. Only your name is requested — no other identifying information. There are
also several suggestions for personally addressing media concerns; please choose one or more of them.
To sign the pledge online, and find resources to “renew the mind of the media,” log on to www.renewingmedia.org
To promote awareness of whether the media is contributing to authentic peace, I promise to do one or more of
the following:
_____Discuss news coverage with family and/or friends (is it objectively providing the information you need?)
_____Contact my local broadcast outlets to submit comments for their license-renewal. Comment especially on whether their news
is balanced or whether it sensationalizes violent incidents.
_____Contact at least one advertiser that sponsors programs which contribute to or do not contribute to building an authentic peace
and ask them to continue or to withdraw their support, respectively.
_____Trade one hour a week using media for an hour in prayer for peace.
Pledge: We, the Catholic people of the United States, united in our families, parishes, and dioceses, pledge to
encourage media leaders to be objective and truthful in reporting news and portraying events, and thus contribute to
building an authentic peace.
To demonstrate your support, please sign and return
