Autorzy przypominają rodowód tej dziedziny intelektualnej, poczynając od kategorii sformułowanych przez Stefana Czarnowskiego, Marcelego Handelsmana, Kazimierza Kelles-Kraussa, Ludwika Krzywickiego, Floriana Znanieckiego i Niny Assorodbraj-Kuli. Następnie opisują proces przedefiniowania i różnorodność zastosowania metodologicznych koncepcji pamięcioznawczych, 2 rozwijanych w polskich studiach historycznych, kulturowych, oraz w socjologii ilościowej i jakościowej. S u m m a ry The article critically examines the history and recent developments of the Polish memory studies. The authors trace the genealogies of this intellectual field, starting with categories forged by Stefan Czarnowski, Marceli Handelsman, Kazimierz Kelles-Krauss, Ludwik Krzywicki, Florian Znaniecki, and Nina Assorodbraj-Kula. Then, they describe reformulations and varied methodological application of memory concepts within Polish historical studies, cultural studies, as well as within qualitative and quantitative sociology. They also summarize main research themes and projects conducted up to date. Finally, they point out to some flaws within the field having to do with its institutional weakness and the selective reception of western intellectual traditions. Key words / słowa kluczowe history of Polish social sciences and humanities ; historia polskich nauk społecznych i humanistycznych; memory studies / studia pamięcioznawcze; methodology / metodologia Christian Gudehus, Harald Welzer Kwestie związane z historią i konstruowaniem obrazów przeszłości zawsze miały znaczenie dla samoidentyfikacji jednostek, grup społecznych, instytucji władzy, państw, a zwłaszcza narodów. S u m m a ry Issues concerning history and the construction of images of the past have always been of importance for the self-identification of individuals, social groups, governing institutions, states, and especially nations. Currently, two trends can be noticed, which may seem antagonistic, but actually condition and shape each other: renegotiating and redefining national historical narratives as well as the opening of national historiography to transnational 3 or globalized perspective. National images and historical myths tend to increase integrity among the members of European communities only to a limited degree, and their importance to the highly normatively-oriented structures of the so called European identity - based on still less credible European memory, perceived by means of also normatively-oriented publicity is rather doubtful. As a result, a scientific discipline has evolved, which studies subjective means of internalizing and utilizing the past rather than public aspects of culture and memory. The discipline involves the studies of tradition and passing thereof, which are rooted in the institution of qualitative sociological research. This article is about the scope and methods of such studies which are focused on how to tell about the past. Key words / słowa kluczowe memory / pamięć; telling about the past / opowiadanie przeszłości; national identity / tożsamość narodowa; European identity / tożsamość europejska Miroslav Hroch Autor wychodzi od pytania, czy naród jest przeciwwagą zjednoczonej Europy. Odpowiedzi poszukuje sięgając do pojęcia tożsamości grupowej. S u m m a ry The Author starts with a question whether a nation is a counterbalance to a unified Europe. In order to find the answer, the notion of group identity is evoked. The Author argues that the notion of European identity – which is just being coined – does not have any roots in ethnic or linguistic communities – contrary to national identity which has been shaped through ages. Neither territorial community, or political community or economic interests constitute equally strong a bond as cultural dimension – a heritage that has evolved from common roots and strong mutual interactions within an imagined community. National identity is of historical character and is based on the memory of past years of a nation’s existence. ‘European identity’ is a rather weak equivalent to national identity. In order to build an European identity, one would have to ponder which variant of Europe’s history to choose. So far European identity cannot refer to any continuum. Its dimensions are not as variable as that of national identity. And its power of influence is rather week. This is why, despite the fact that both identities are relatively compatible, i.e. they do not exclude each other, and one cannot replace the other. Thus, the author concludes that any and all fears of a nation’s ‘dilution’ within a uniform ‘European state’ are groundless. 4 Key words / słowa kluczowe European identity / tożsamość europejska; nation / naród; nationalism / nacjonalizm; historical consciuosness / świadomość historyczna Magdalena Saryusz-Wolska Refleksja nad miejskim doświadczeniem nowoczesności rozwijała się równolegle do rozważań o pamięci zbiorowej. W paradygmacie medialnym natomiast porusza się Christine Boyer, analizując w książce The City of Collective Memory wizualne manifestacje pamięci miasta. Z zestawienia dwóch wzajemnie uzupełniających się podejść badawczych należałoby wywieść postulaty pogłębienia refleksji nad rolą kultury popularnej i wizualności w kształtowaniu się pamięci miast oraz dalszych badań nad przekraczającymi granice państwowe i narodowe „splotami kulturowymi”. S u m m a ry The analysis of urban experience of modernity developed simultaneously with the analysis of collective memory. Urban space is related with a palimpsest metaphor, which includes urban memory in the history of memory understood as a history of the media. In recent years the relationship between memory and a city is analyzed on the examples featuring multiculturalism and migration movements of the cities of the Central Europe, e.g. in the Vienna monograph ca. 1900 Das Gedächtnis der Städte (The Memory of the City) by Moritz Csaky. On the other hand, the media paradigm is used by Christine Boyer, who analyses visual manifestations of city memory in her book The City of Collective Memory. Juxtaposition of the two mutually complementing scientific attitudes invokes a need to postulate a deeper analysis of the role of popular culture and visuality in shaping the memory of cities, as well as conducting further studies on cross-country and transnational ‘cultural tangles’. Key words / słowa kluczowe memory of a city / pamięć miasta; multiculturalism / wielokulturowość; visuality / wizualność / Christoph Hamann Autor wychodzi od stwierdzenia, że fotografia i nowoczesna historiografia powstały w tym samym czasie, a następnie poszukuje między nimi powiązań. The Author starts with a thesis that photography and modern historiography developed at the same time, and then tries to look for relationships between the two. He starts from analyzing a specificity of a photograph which – as a medium – not only represents the past, but can be an energizing impulse both in the presence and the future. By referring to the semiotic classification of Charles Senders Peirce, the Author describes the importance of a photograph to historical research as an index, an icon and a symbol. This helps understand the way of using a collective resource of photographs and to define a status of digital photographs as a source. Finally, the Author tries to show the perspectives of visual history analysis and the role which might be played by images when forming and changing memory communities in the era of globalization and diversification. Key words / słowa kluczowe photography / fotografia; history / historia; medium / medium; image /obraz; memory community / wspólnota pamięci Jerzy Mikułowski Pomorski Autor zastanawia się nad przemianami instytucji muzeum, traktując je jako medium. S u m m a ry The Author ponders changes in the perception of the institution of museum, which he treats as a medium. He considers its constitutive features: spatiality and transfer function. In his opinion, in the contemporary world of cultural convergence the museums, once limited with institutional perspective, targeted their attention at the needs and experiences of a viewer – they have become a piece of land which may be developed by people according to their own group needs. Key words / słowa kluczowe contermporary culture / kultura współczesna; museum / muzeum; medium / medium Zuzanna Bogumił The Author examines the presentation of the German occupation at the Warsaw Rising Museum and in Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory in Krakow. Initially, she studies the space of these exhibitions and demonstrates that the Warsaw Rising Museum has some characteristics of reflective space, while the exhibition at the Schindler's Factory is primarily a projective one. Then, she points out that both museums treat artefacts as illustrations of their stories, as a consequence of which they are simulations of the past rather than material testimonies of what had happened. Finally, the Author argues that the Warsaw Rising Museum primarily tells the story of glory of the Polish nation, while the Schindler Factory focuses on the social history. In conclusion the Author points out that none of the exhibitions 6 breaks the existing taboos or offers a new approach to the past. Both museum stories perfectly reflect the shape of the Polish social memory of World War II. Differences in the way they present the past are a result of rooting each of the stories in different public debates that were conducted in Poland after 1989. S u m m a ry Autorka analizuje sposób przedstawienia okupacji niemieckiej w Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego i w Muzeum w Fabryce „Emalia” Oskara Schindlera w Krakowie. Key words / słowa kluczowe memory/ pamięć; museum/ muzeum; authenticity/ autentyczność; museum artefacts/ przedmioty muzealne; space/ przestrzeń; Holocaust/ Zagłada; Warsaw Uprising/ powstanie warszawskie; Warsaw Ghetto/ getto warszawskie; occupation of Krakow/ okupacja Krakowa Katarzyna Jagodzińska Artykuł poświęcony jest, wzorowanej na zachodniej modzie, tendencji do wykorzystywania postprzemysłowych budowli w muzealnictwie. Podjęte zostają kwestie przystosowania zastanej architektury do funkcji muzealnych, odwołań do historii i tożsamości gmachu oraz relacji, jakie instytucja zlokalizowana w obrębie historycznych murów buduje z otoczeniem. S u m m a ry The Author considers a trend, which comes from the west, to use post-industrial developments for museums. The article includes issues concerning adaptation of postindustrial developments for museum functions, references to history and identity of the building concerned, as well as relations of an institution – which is hosted within the historical construction - with the surroundings. The museums which have been selected for the analysis are representative for a boom observed in Poland since the beginning of the 21 st 7 century – the majority of newly-established museums are located in adapted old buildings, the museums representing almost exclusively only two categories: historical museums and contemporary art museums. The Author seeks an answer to a question whether museums must follow current trends. She concludes that a quest for success translating to a good image and high attendance is and certainly shall remain an important goal of a museum. She warns, however, of dangers related with a museum trying to be a ‘trendy’ place to attend, especially in the times of public life commercialization, which is more and more common. Key words / słowa kluczowe historical museums / muzea historyczne; museums of contemporary art / muzea sztuki współczesnej; postindustrial architecture / architektura postindustrialna Tomasz Stryjek In his article the Author examines the notion of remembrance policy, the importance of remembering the events of the period 1939-1953 for contemporary identity politics in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia as well as the course of a conflict about the memory, which escalated between those countries and Russia particularly between 2005-2010. The Author introduces a term "remembrance policy model ", which concerns the balance of powers among political actors in a given state, who influence the shape of this aspect of the state policy. He also analyses the state strategies of the remembrance policy in international relations within the region, with special attention to Lithuania and Ukraine. He examines reasons for the success of the policy of remembering the 1939-1953 events in Lithuania in 1991-2011 and a failure of such policy in Ukraine in 2005-2010. The sources of difference between the effects of these two policies lie, in his opinion, not only in far greater ethnic and identity homogeneity of the Lithuanian society, but also in the fact that the EU gave an early, clear and consistent support for economic, social and political transformation of that country, which was, unfortunately, not provided to Ukraine - either after its establishment in 1991, or after the Orange Revolution in 2004. Cienka monografia Jana Tomasza Grossa pt. „Sąsiedzi”, opublikowana w maju 2000 r., wywołała debatę, która rozpoczęła proces samokrytycznej oceny stosunku narodu polskiego w przeszłości do mniejszości żydowskiej i innych mniejszości etnicznych, tzw. kulturalne odrodzenie pamięci narodowej. S u m m a ry The paper considers the memories of Polish-Jewish relations during the Holocaust in Poland in the aftermath of the intense public debate about the Jedwabne massacre of July 10, 1941, since 2002 till the present. Jan Tomasz Gross’s slim monograph Neighbors, published in May 2000, triggered a debate that generated a process of self-critical assessments of the Polish national past in relation to Jewish and other ethnic minorities, the so-called cultural renewal of public memory. Ten years later there is still a sharp split between groups of Polish politicians, public intellectuals, journalists, historians and members of society at large in how they evaluate the dark aspects of the Polish-Jewish relations during and after WWII. The paper examines the main modes of remembering Jews and the Holocaust: "remembering to remember", "remembering to benefit", and "remembering to forget", and the different manifestations of these three modes, and discusses what has made it difficult for Poles to integrate the dark past into popular historical consciousness and public memory. Key words / słowa kluczowe modes of remembering of Jews and the Holocaust / sposoby pamiętania o Żydach i Holokauście; memorialization of the Holocaust / upamiętnienie Holokaustu; politicization of rescuers of Jews / upolitycznienie ratujących Żydów 9 Antoni Sułek Artykuł zawiera próbę oceny efektu społecznego książki „Złote żniwa”, opublikowanej na początku 2011 r. przez Jana Tomasza Grossa i Irenę Grudzińską-Gross. Autorzy ujawnili fakty, skalę i motywacje udziału Polaków w mordowaniu i rabowaniu Żydów w Nazioccupied Poland. Odpowiedzi szuka w nastawieniach Polaków i rodzaju przekonań, które „Złote żniwa” miały zmienić; w cechach charakterystycznych książki i debaty przez nią wywołanej S u m m a ry The article is an attempt to assess a social impact of the book „Golden Harvest”, published at the beginning of 2011 by Jan Tomasz Gross and Irena Grudzińska-Gross. The authors of the book have revealed facts, scale and motives of participation of the Polish citizens in killing and robbing Jews in the Nazi-occupied Poland. They have demonstrated that the scale of Jewish homicide was broader than hitherto described, and argued that it was greater than the scope of help provided to the Jews. The book triggered a fiery public debate in Poland. Based on the research polls the Author of the article demonstrates that the impact of “Golden Harvest” is quite complex. The book and the debate did activate the social memory concerning violence, burglary and killings of the Jews. Supposedly, they also persuaded some scarce number of Poles that such facts, quite numerous, did happen and made a significant number of Poles think that it might have been so. The discussion did not, however, change an overall and valuating opinion about the attitude of Poles towards Holocaust. The Author tries to explain why the book’s effect was far less spectacular than its authors had expected. The answer is looked for in the attitudes of Poles and the type of beliefs that were to have been changed as a result of publishing ‘Golden Harvest’, as well as in the specific features of the book and the debate triggered by it. Key words / słowa kluczowe stosunki polsko-żydowskie / Polish-Jewish relations; Holocaust / zagłada Żydów; Jan Tomasz Gross Jakub Knyżewski Artykuł poświęcony jest dokonaniom środowiska skupionego wokół czasopisma „Borussia. Kultura. Historia. S u m m a ry The article elaborates on the accomplishments of those centered around a magazine „Borussia. Culture. History. Literature” which, while following a constructivist vision of history, seeks an answer to a question about a role of the heritage of East Prussia and Germany in contemporary Poland. Thus, a challenge has been taken to not only examine the region’s past, but also to examine the creation of contemporary civil society which is aware of what was the past of the land on which they live. Elements of multicultural image of East Prussia emerging from ‘Borussia” articles create a metaphoric “Atlantis of the North” – idealized multicultural land, dominated by the spirit of tolerance. Such an image, together with the idea of ‘open regionalism’ comprises a preferred image of contemporary regional identity.
