According to research presented by Nick Stewart,
a psychologist from Oxford Brookes University,
singing in a choir may be good for our mental
health. Stewart analysed responses from 375 people
who sang in choirs, sang alone or who played
a team sport. His analysis showed that all the three
activities have a positive effect on an individual’s
well-being.

The analysis showed that singing in a choir, where
you get together with other people, is much better
for your well-being than singing alone. Also, it has
long been known that joining a sports team is
good for both our physical and our mental health.
Surprisingly, however, people regard singing in
a choir to be a more positive experience than being
in a sports team.
3.3
Nick Stewart explains that we still know little about
the actual effects that singing in a choir has on
people. He suggests that the experience of making
music may be more positive when the singer is
a member of a social group. He also says it would be
worth studying what effects moving and breathing
in harmony with other people has on the individual.
