Wszystkie właściwie realizacje Agaty Agatowskiej artykułują jej zainteresowania problematyką obecności archetypów i mitów zbiorowych w kontekście ich powszechności i utraty przezroczystości. Artystka – dość nieoczekiwanie i dziś raczej niespotykanie – wykorzystuje w swoich pracach prostotę i ascetyzm rzeźby konstruktywistycznej. Roman Lewandowski Übersetzt von Małgorzata Behlert 5 CODES (AND) ICONS we live in a world in which the priority of image and imaging governs like probably it happened never before. This mutually linked mechanism of interpreting and creating reality attained some greater power and temptation when image became governed by electronic media, and when almost everything what’s virtual became for some an often more tempting and attractive solution than real surrounding life and the sphere of human (co-)existence. It’s intriguing that the ‘live’ and moving image – in spite it got some attributes of the old media, among other things thanks to the three-dimensional effect – is confronted or even redefined by traditional procedures of imaging. Practices of that king are most often present in the art world, since artists are probably particularly sensitive and interested in investigating and tracing the space of visibility, and its influence on our perception of reality. Within this area of artistic activity, Agata Agatowska’s creation – in fact almost from the very beginning of her artistic career – corresponds with similar investigations and simultaneous deconstructing within the framework of the functioning media and aesthetic strategies. The artist, even though she expresses herself using various media, realises all the basic postulates of three-dimensional image and object. From the formal and structural point of view Agatowska concentrates most often on classical sculptural forms, however her works enter the discourse with the place and its context. In effect, both the aspects of spatiality (place), spatialisation (medium) and generating space (work) are important for the artist. This makes that in her case we are dealing with the so-called installation ‘art’, and not with traditional sculpture. Irrespective of that she is also interested in the stage dimension of the show; situations and scenes generated by her have also an independent (para)theatrical format. This aesthetical and semiotic context of the work could be seen as early as in her early works (from the cycle Miss) shown in 2001 during the second edition of the exhibition Woman about Woman at the BWA Gallery in Bielsko-Biała. In that case Agata Agatowska used video projection which included a disturbed televised show and a sculpture which was its ‘real’ equivalent. In that particular case the artist took up the issues and methods of creating and distorting the image of the woman. Using the example of the televised Miss of the World contest she shows us that the woman, submitted to various media operations in front of our very eyes, becomes an artefact rather than a living human being. Showmen seem to be interested mostly in the economy of production and the consumption of collective myths. Hence the girls participating in the contest are getting a heavenly aura and becoming a product of an entertainment which is to serve and represent the separate groups of interest. In such a light the everyday reality, together with the recipients imprisoned around the ‘cold media’ becomes passive, suspicious and indolent. Media revelators seem to suggest us that the appearance and the superficial look are the only important and beautiful things. In fact, the communication ecstasy – even though it repeatedly uses three-dimensional effects – remains flat, imperfect and obscene. As a matter of fact, each realisation of Agata Agatowska is articulating her interest in the issues of the presence of archetypes and collective myths in the context of their commonness and the loss of transparency. The icons of mass culture (from fairy tale figures up to the pop-entertainment) appear in her works as if marked by the immediate context, multiplied like Campbell cans and immersed in the sphere of tele-presence. The artist, however, doesn’t dissociate herself neither from their look nor repeatability. She makes delicate aesthetical cuts and linguistic transfers, and 6 then – just like Hans Bellmer did at one time – conceives a new (and sometimes hallucinogenic) story from (apparently) ready objects. Narrations – like for example in the Ice-cream – are linking the dictate of the subconscious with animalistic figurations. The split and concealed bottom of the anecdote (for example in her Pack) transfers us from the world of childhood fairy tales into the area of reality-show, where the transmissions meet, including the Atlantis launching in Houston, and a David Bowie’s concert. The polyphony and the multitude of masks shown in these works are probably connected with the fact that Agata Agatowska has collaborated with the Velvets -Black & Light Theater in Wiesbaden for many years. Agatowska’s thematic inspiration by surrealism is deprived of its baroque and eccentric character. In turn, the pop-art fetishism of objectiveness is deprived of trivialisation which is so often present in today’s art. Quite unexpectedly – what’s rather rare today – in her works the artist uses the simplicity and asceticism of the constructivist sculpture. Paradoxically, however, we can see the traces of the most elementary emotions in them. Just like in Tatlin certain ‘machine romanticism’ was once seen, in Agatowska we have something of such diction. The ideas come from feelings and emotions, and their existential dimension appears in spite of the dictate of the form. Therefore in her art human or animal corporeality enters the discourse with technology (like in her Removal to Mars or in the abovementioned sculptures from the cycle Miss). It can be interpreted as the expression of atavism and simultaneously as a search for a common genealogical code. On the other hand, the investigations carried out by contemporary genetic engineers confirm that all the living beings can be something more for themselves than only a metonymic substitute. Works of the author of the Transformation of Reality are a search for the bonds and analogies between animate and inanimate objects, between things and images. They go out to meet the truth and the most elementary feelings which are contained in the complicated relations of the iconography ascribed to us and the casual media. Before our very eyes Agata Agatowska creates a kind of oniric theatre. Like in Carroll’s mirror, worlds, roles and figures meet in this theatre. On the edge of the meeting area the figures and their shadows appear as a mirror image of reality and the afterimage of identity. Without such a theatre our life would be deprived of many a beautiful fairy tale. Her works contain an inner cohesion and create a moving language of forms by a concentration of content and a formal reduction. Agatowska reveals the relationship and dependence between sculpture and pantomime included in spatial relationships. It is with great interest that I observe her artistic development and I am convinced that thanks to her unusually interesting artistic creativity and active interest in the contemporary view of man and the world she is fully qualified to receive the Scholarship of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.
