Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Our Faculty and Staff
Cordially invite you
To attend our Open House
From 9:30 AM until 12:30 PM
On Sunday, January 25th, 2004.
In celebration of
Catholic Schools Week

Registrations for next year
Will be accepted.
Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish
Sunday, January 10-11, 2004:
Envelopes:
$ 9,087.00
Loose Cash:
$ 4,158.45
TOTAL DONATIONS:
$13,245.45
Amount over/ (under) weekly budget: ($1,754.55)
We have begun the second half of fiscal year 2004
and our regular offertory collections remain below budget
each week. While we continue to look for ways to cut
our expenses, it appears obvious that we will have a
deficit this year primarily because we have not reached
our weekly goal since Mother’s Day weekend last May.
In the coming weeks we will be busy preparing our
six-month financial report for the Archdiocese and we
will also begin our budget process for next year. Cutting
our operational expenses will be the key financial priority
for 2004 and 2005. We will continue to make capital
improvements to our buildings based on the generosity of
our parishioners who are supporting the Sharing Christ’s
Gifts Millennium Campaign. Some of those projects are
now being planned for the spring and summer of this
year, and they are separate considerations from the day to
day operation of the parish.
Your support of St. Ferdinand Parish through the
weekly offertory envelope is very important. Please be as
generous as you are able.

As members of the parish faith
community, it is our responsibility to
remember both in concrete and spiritual
ways those who cannot celebrate with
us each week because they are ill.
Those who are sick in turn, remember
all of us daily in their prayers and in
their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of
their remembering us. And so ... please remember in your
prayers:

Contribution Statements
In the past, many parishes
(including ourselves) mailed out contribution statements at the end of
every year. We have found, however,
that due to certain changes in IRS tax
laws and other circumstances, most
people no longer need the information found on these
statements. Because of this, and also the high cost of
postage, we will NOT be sending them out once again
this year.
If you still need a contribution statement, please call
the rectory Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. to request one, and to arrange a time and
date that you will pick it up. Statements will be printed by request only.

in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 96:1-2, 2-3, 7-8, 9-10
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11
Gospel: John 2:1-11
A Grand Wedding Someone at Cana knew what was important:
important for the newlyweds, important for the wedding guests, important
for her son and his followers, important for us. It should really come as
no surprise that that someone was Mary. Mary knew that a wedding was
more than waiters and wine. She recognized that this joyous celebration
pointed to the grand wedding of God and humankind.
• Comment
From exile in
Babylon, the Jews had returned to a
devastated Jerusalem. The sight of the
rubble that was once God’s holy city
cast a shadow of despair over their
shining freedom. The prophet speaks
to the people, assuring them that splendor and glory are bound for Jerusalem.
God will reclaim Jerusalem and her
people as a groom claims a bride. God
will be their splendor and glory.
Paul writes to the Corinthians to
remind his new converts that the many
gifts God has given them are intended
not only for the good of the individual
recipients but for the good of all. Gifts
are given to build up the community of
the Church. Paul goes on to say that
the many gifts are but manifestations
of the one Spirit who is at work in the
Church. Gifts must be shared.
Only John recounts the story of the
wedding feast at Cana. Here, we find
Jesus working his first “sign” or miracle, and working it at the request of his
mother. The symbolism in this sign
sets the tone for the way John will treat
Jesus’ signs throughout his Gospel.
The enormous amount of water for ritual purification signifies the whole of
Jewish cult and law. As Jesus orders
the jars refilled, the water gains a different mission, namely, the water of
Christian baptism. But Jesus isn’t finished with it. At his word, the water
becomes wine, wine that suggests the
Eucharist. In the wedding feast, then,
we see the revelation of the Messiah
who has come to save through baptism
and the Eucharist.
•Reflection In the first reading,
God speaks in the language of a spouse
and names Israel “Espoused” and “My
Delight.” As a bridegroom rejoices in
his bride, so we are told God will
rejoice in the people of Israel. The
image of a marriage is familiar to
Israel, but it is God who first uses it in
this way. The mystery of our extraordinary relationship with God is often
found in our own simple everyday
realities.
When ordinary water and waiters
and wine stewards and mothers wait
on God’s action in Jesus, they come to
know something about God’s life
among them. Today’s Gospel reading
gives us signs that disclose who Jesus
is. They give us insight into what the
wedding of God and humankind
means. At Cana, Jesus made a wonderful first impression, one that has been
borne out down to this day. The wedding at Cana began the disclosure of
how well it goes when humanity is
wed to divinity.
Like drawn water, like Israel, like
Mary and the apostles, we can recognize our maker and redeemer. When
God seems far away, we founder.
When we are called, we spark to life
and are made new. We know ourselves
anew. We are God’s delight. We possess new voices to sing a new song, for
our life is received fresh and new. This
is a great miracle, one far greater than
turning water into wine.

Each year, the annual Collection for the Church in Latin America is held in parishes across the country. The proceeds from this
collection go to support the work of pastoral projects in Latin America and the Caribbean. For the first time, the Archdiocese of Chicago will
be participating in this work of solidarity this weekend.
Last year, over $6 million were raised in the United States to provide funding for 438 projects that included catechetical and lay
leadership programs, youth ministry, evangelization projects, as well as formation programs for religious, priests and deacons in over twenty
countries.
Please pray for the Church in Latin America, and please be as generous as you are able. Thank you.
Bulletin reminder: All notices for the January 25th bulletin need to be in the rectory no later than 9 AM on Monday, January 19th.
You may bring your bulletin notices to the rectory in an envelope labeled “bulletin” or you may fax them to 622-5903. The e-mail address for bulletin

Baptism Preparation Classes
If you are anticipating the baptism of your child, and this
is your first child to be baptized at St. Ferdinand Church,
please accept our heartiest congratulations!
Parents are required to attend a Baptism preparation
class prior to the Baptism of your first child at St.
Ferdinand Church. Classes are usually held on the first
Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the rectory.
The dates of the next classes are:
February 4, 2004 and April 21, 2004
If you have any questions about the class or dates of
upcoming classes please call Joe Kummer at 773/6223022 ext. 366.

during the penitential season of Lent, if you wish to have
your child baptized during the Easter Season, then you
will need to participate in one of these classes. Please
call the rectory at 622-5900 to make your reservation at
the class of your choice.
As Catholics we take seriously the responsibility to
practice the faith we profess and to instill our CatholicChristian values in our children .

Ecumenical Prayer Service Highlights The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
The 2004 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be
marked by the Fourth Annual Chicagoland
Ecumenical Prayer Service on Friday, January
23, 2004 at 6:30 p.m. in the Archbishop
Quigley Preparatory Seminary, 103 East
Chestnut St. (corner of Rush and Pearson
Streets), Chicago.
The Rev. Jane Fisler Hoffman, Conference
Minister of the Illinois Conference of the United
Church of Christ, is scheduled to preach. Church leaders and laity from Christian and ethnic communities of the
area will participate in the liturgical event, sponsored by the
Ecumenical Millennium Committee, a group of sixteen
churches in the metropolitan area. The service is open to all.
For more information, please contact 708-660-9168 or 312751-5325.
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 1968. This
year's theme for the week of January 18-25 is:
“…My peace I give you…not as the world
gives. Let not your hearts be troubled…” (John
14:23-31). Amid the uncertainty of our world,
the peace of Christ brings comfort and hope to
the people of God. The legacy of the Rev. Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., celebrated in the midst
of the week of prayer for healing and understanding, underlies the urgency for Christians to
promote reconciliation among races, nations, all peoples and all churches.
The Ecumenical Millennium Committee was formed in
1999 to pray and prepare for the third Christian millennium.
It continues to sponsor the prayer service, and is a catalyst
for ecumenical courtesy, hospitality and information in the
Chicago area in this ecumenical millennium.
The World Council of Churches and the Pontifical Council
for Promoting Christian Unity began jointly celebrating the
" Nonviolence is absolute commitment to the way of
love. Love is not emotional bash; it is not empty
sentimentalism. It is the active outpouring of one's
whole being into the being of another."
--Martin Luther King, Jr., 1957
