The Celej House is one of the most precious architectural monuments in Poland and it is a model
example of Polish burgher architecture in its finest form. It was built of limestone and it is a two-storey
building with the layout typical of other Kazimierz Dolny tenement houses. The greatest highlight of the
building is its front elevation with an immense attic (over 1/3 of the total height of the building)
decorated with motifs and figures. Two decorative silhouettes represent the patron saints of the founder
of the house and of his son, that is St. Bartholomew the Apostle and St. John the Baptist, and the other
two represent Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the World, and the Mother of God as the Queen of Heaven.
The attic ridge is decorated with ornamental details, such as basilisks, dragons, birds, which were
inspired by the work of a prolific Italian sculptor Santi Gucci and his successors. The house was built
before 1635.
Since the mid-18th century, the building was in ruin, but then it was adapted for a tannery. In 1917 it
was bought by the Association for the Protection of Monuments of the Past (Polish: Towarzystwo Opieki
Nad Zabytkami Przeszłości). The house was given a major overhaul between 1917 and 1920. In the
1930s the tenement house was home to the museum collection of the Kazimierz Dolny Friends
Association (Polish: Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Kazimierza). In 1964 it was made the headquarters of the
Regional Museum, and in 1987 it became the official seat of the Vistula Museum.
ABOUT THE COLLECTION. The collection of exhibit items shown in the Celej House includes a mock-up
of the town
the mock-up: architect Tadeusz Michalak. The project was conducted not only based on the
iconography, but also on archive sources and historical documents.
The exhibition in Hall 2 is an attempt to restore the atmosphere of the interwar period
art colony. Here you can see the costumes and props used in the 1993 film Two Moons (Polish: Dwa
Księżyce) by Andrzej Barański, based on the collection of short stories by Maria Kuncewiczowa. One of
the scenes in this film was the act of painting God the Father. The model acting as God was Radek
Skrzeczkowski, a resident of Kazimierz Dolny, and the picture was painted by Andrzej Brylski.
The exhibition also presents photographs of plein air workshops and the painters who took part in these
painting sessions. The photographs are a part of a private collection of a prominent painter, Teresa
Roszkowska. The museum in the Celej House contains a valuable collection of pieces of art, comprising
of both pictures painted in the early years of the art colony and contemporary paintings.

The house at 19 Małachowskiego Street in Kazimierz Dolny was built in 1936 for an eminent Polish
writer, Maria Kuncewiczowa, and her husband, Jerzy Kuncewicz
erected based on the design by architect Karol Siciński. Mr and Mrs Kuncewicz used to live here most of
the year, socializing intensively and enjoying their time with artists and other important personages, but
they would move abroad for the winter, usually to Rome. After both of them had passed away, the
Kuncewicz Foundation (Polish: Fundacja Kuncewiczów) took care of the house between 1991 and 2005.
The Foundation was established by the son of Maria and Jerzy, Witold Kuncewicz, who entrusted
Edward Balawejder with managing the organization.
A great number of interesting academic sessions, soirées, art exhibitions and meetings with prominent
artists, writers, scientists and volunteers had been organized during that time. In 2004 the authorities of
the Lublin Province bought the building and the adjacent garden and handed the estate over to the
Vistula Museum in Kazimierz Dolny. Thanks to the financial assistance of the Ministry of Culture and
National Heritage, the House was subject to stage 1 of the major overhaul and modernization (June
December 2006).
The opening of the museum was scheduled on December 22, 2006, and it was accompanied by the
presentation of a new permanent exhibition, prepared based on an extensive collection of scientific
documents. This exhibition was completed in the early 1980s owing to the efforts of Jerzy Żurawski, the
then director of the Vistula Museum in Kazimierz Dolny.

distinctive features of summer resort architecture of the interwar period. The house is a testament of
the era during which it was built and a reflection of aspirations and taste of its owners, members of the
Polish cultural elite. The most eminent representatives and creators of the Polish social and cultural
ideology of that time were guests in that very house. The garden around the villa was designed by an
outstanding Polish naturalist, Jan Dybowski.

The Natural Science Museum in Kazimierz Dolny was established in 1982 as one of the four branches of
the Vistula Museum. The headquarters of the Museum is the grain silo from the 16th century, where six
exhibition halls are open for visitors. Not far from the silo, there is a so-called commune head
(Polish: dom wójtowski) from the village of Modliborzyce, dating back to the second half of the 19th
century. It houses a teaching room, as well as offices and workshops.
Between the two buildings there is a garden. The Museum collects and prepares showpieces from the
fields of geology, palaeontology, botany and zoology mainly from the area of the Kazimierz Landscape
Park. Today, there are more than 12,000 exhibit items in the Museum
continuously provides new sources of knowledge on the fauna and flora of the local region.
By providing knowledge and stimulating thinking, the Museum attempts to broaden the environmental
awareness of the community. In order to do this, the Museum creates both permanent and temporary
exhibitions, publishes additional materials and organizes educational events.
The Museum has four permanent exhibitions:
of this protected area;
one of the most beautiful sections of this major lowland European river;
65 million years ago, in the sea of the Cretaceous period;
gorges was created around Kazimierz Dolny and to get to know the species which chose to make gorges
their habitat.
Apart from the permanent exhibitions, each year we encourage our visitors to see temporary displays on
various topics.
From the spring to the autumn we encourage you to see the outdoor exhibition of plants, that is
Museum botanical garden. Several outdoor events complement our vast array of museum exhibitions:
